Quote of the Day
By Steve Benen Thursday Dec 06, 2007 5:40pmPaul Krugman delivers the Quote of the Day:
Back when Hillary Clinton described Dick Cheney as Darth Vader, a number of people pointed out that this was an unfair comparison. For example, Darth Vader once served in the military.
Here’s another reason the comparison is invalid: the contractors Darth Vader hired to build the Death Star actually got the job done.

1mpeach!
Well.... These are all good points... Vader at one time was an honorable jedi knight and the death star did get built... I always preferred The Penguin personally... Like the one Batman had to deal with... Thats visually who he always reminded me of... Of course this sort of slanders all the good little penguins up north and in that cute little kiddie movie... How bout 'that asshole'... That's pretty much how I view him.... What say ye other C&L posters.... I respectfully submit replacement of the moniker 'Darth Cheney' with 'that asshole'.....JD
So fast that my comment beat the post by 19 minutes. Take that Einstein!
fiver @ 1:
Impeachment of Darth Vader would have made for a boring plot in star wars. I like George Lucas' approach better.
I'll be interested to see how C&L posters write about an HRC presidency, if it occurs.
Have my thoughts, but I'll keep 'em to myself.
You know, any contractor willing to work on that Death Star knew the risks. If they were killed, it was their own fault.
Paul Krugman is the best Editorialist in the MSM. I don't understand how he hasn't been kicked off. What deals did he cut to stay on? Who does he know? He unendingly destroys Right Wing Economic talking points. So ... how does he get to stay on an editorial spot? I mean, he writes next to Friedman and Cohen. Those guys are jokes.
I've often wondered about this, but I think Cheney has to be the Emperor. We don't know if he served in the military, but we do know he's a crooked politician. I guess Bush would be Dark Helmet or something.
VietVet8666 @ 5:
Please share them. I personally feel it would be a nightmare as well. Very similar to Bush policies, incinerate Iran, etc.
curtilingus @ 4:
Unfortunately, for the Lucas approach to work we would have to wait until Darth Cheney destroys an entire planet before we take out his Death Star. While that approach seems acceptable to the Nancy Pelosi types, the less risky, more "conservative" approach would be to impeach now.
fiver @ 10:
You are right. I shouldn't be advocating space violence.
Space baiting?
curtilingus @ 9:
I believe HRC would test polically each action.
VietVet8666 @ 13:
I agree. Bush tests them not with his constituents but with AIPAC and the evangelicals. I believe in our two party system, but I don't believe in either of the parties right now.
Eric Almighty @ 8:
I would have to agree with Cheney being more like the Emperor. Ultimately taking on too much and losing control of it all.
I like being in the Rebellion.
Darth Vader also had just enough tatent good within him that it eventually redeemed him. The Dork Lard Cheney has no redeeming qualites; he's 100% evil in a human suit.
Darth Vader also repented. Like THAT will ever happen.
You know you're a really bad guy, when people start defending one of the worst villains in fiction.
Villains always think they're doing the right thing -- at least for them. Cheney comes from Nowheresville. Where does he think he gets the right to rule the United States like a petty fiefdom? No wonder he's had three (four?) heart attacks: body, heart and soul are locked in a death struggle.
Somehow, I don't expect him to do a Lee Atwater, and repent at the end. Beelzebub will welcome him with open arms, and Dick will walk right up to him. He and Lynn deserve each other.
Well, it took 20 years to build the Death Star. So maybe it's gonna be a similar time line...
Actually, Cheney accomplished everthing he wanted. He wanted to destroy our democracy as we knew it.
Cheney is definitely the Emperor. The Emperor is the real power, the puppet master, the true mind behind the grand scheme, and the greater evil. What he can't do, he pursuades Vader he wants to do; always in the name of the good of the Empi--er, society.
George Bush is Darth Vader. Once he may have had some good, but it was always overshadowed by his anger, insecurity, and hatefulness, until his weak mind was easily manipulated by trusted controllers until "the greater good" meant everyone that opposed you was an enemy to be crushed by the most single-minded, hateful fury possible.
Vader was never in the military FYI. He was advisor and chief enforcer for the Emperor. It was Lord Vader.
Just sayin'.
What else can you say about this quote but BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!
But there is a fair comparison between the two. Darth Vader destroyed an entire planet with the Death Star. Cheney's trying his hardest to destroy ours. That and I bet in a year or two we'll find out that "Barrack, I'm your father".
OUTING A CIA AGENT IN TIME OF WAR IS TREASON AGAINST THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Call Nancy Pelosi @1-202-225-0100 and DEMAND IMPEACHMENT.
LET'S FORCE congress to IMPEACH DEADEYE DicTRAITOR and his not so comical sidkick, CODPIECE.
clinton needs to stop kowtowing to the jewish community and represent american interests.
I agree, it's an unequal comparison. Unlike Dick Cheney, Darth Vader actually had some good left in him and he could be redeemed...good luck with your redemption Dick!
VietVet8666 @ 5:
Interesting. I'd much rather see how they respond to a Clinton presidency than a Giuliani presidency.
Actually, the contractors hired to build the Death Star left a two-meter hole that allowed Luke to blow the entire base up with one missle.
Darth also hired bounty hunters (Blackwater) to catch Han Solo when his regular, run-of-the-mill stormtroopers couldn't get the job done.
The administration also has a habit of offing any of its commanders that offer criticism, much like Vader's Jedi death choke.
Invaded Alderaan even though they posed no threat to the Empire.
Cheney's connection to big slimy, shady corporate entities...Jabba the Hutt anyone?
I could go on...
...the contractors Darth Vader hired to build the Death Star actually got the job done.
Actually, they didn't quite get to finish the punch list, but that was Luke Skywalker's fault. ;)
I recently watched all 6 Star wars movies. I kept thinking that George Lucas ended up being prescient, if his story were compared to what's happening here. He depicted the intentional, methodical corruption of an established free system which lead to it's total destruction and subsequent engulfment into absolute slavery. Lucas, after meticulous research and study, told the story in terms of universal archetypes and myths which are common to all cultures. The syth is the noecon/GOP, and the Palpatine character is the current neocon-run GOP leadership. They are attempting to corrupt, destroy and engulf this country, by the numbers.
One line that stuck in my mind was, "So.. this is how liberty dies..to thunderous applause". The applause is our own representatives actively working for the dark side, or abandoning their duty to resist.
Art mirrors reality or reality mirrors art?
Hmm.....I wonder if Krugman is a Kevin Smith fan.....remember, all the guys working on the Death Star when it blew up were independent contractors and not necessarily Imperial employees.....Gotta love that scene from Clerks.
43 will always be Goofus from Highlights Magazine
When someone would dare defy him or screw up Darth Vader would choke the living shit out of em and they got the point, whereas Evil Dick shoots em with a shotgun
Cheney learned to whisper-talk by watching Darth with the volume turned way down.
That's what gave him 'The Power'.
one more reason why it is invalid. darth vader had courage.
I thought the death star never got fully completed? Yah, it was "operational", but I don't recall it actually being *finished*.
it was fully armed and operational, but someone forgot to put a cap on the exhaust port.
