Tomorrow is Fifth Anniversary of the "Day of Shame"
Vastleft at Corrente:
On February 5, 2003, Secretary of State Colin Powell addressed the United Nations to rally support for an invasion of Iraq.
His presentation contained little substance and numerous obvious flaws, and the international community was unimpressed.
America’s mainstream media, however, declared it “compelling.”
For a nation living in the ghostly shadow of the twin towers, the media’s Good Warmaking seal of approval was enough to keep that treasonous question — “why?” — relatively unheard.
The costs — in lives, money, reputation, and more — of this war of whim are nearly incalculable.
This year’s fifth anniversary coincides with a Super Tuesday primary like no other. As Americans across the country go to the polls, a couple of hundred thousand American troops, contractors, and mercenaries are still stewing in America’s longest and most ill-conceived war.

Powell's last shot at redemption will be in the next couple of months......if ever.
Get out and vote tomorrow.
It is up to us to get our troops home, save our economy and our country.
Just vote Dem.
This is where Hillary loses me... She states that she was duped by this Administration. Trained as a lawyer, she should be well aware of the rules of evidence - and none of that dog and pony charade by Powell passed the smell test. If she is that easily "duped" by scary cartoons, I worry about the future of the U.S. with her in the White House. (:>
"His presentation contained little substance and numerous obvious flaws, and the international community was unimpressed."
Flaws? Flaws? Downright lies and Powell and the entire Bush Regime knew it was all lies. The Dems KNEW IT TOO. It was the final nail in the coffin of the former democratic republic known as the United States of America.
everyone in the bush administration should be in a fucking prison cell for life.
Happy anniversary Secretary Powell! We'll keep counting (just in case you decide you want to run for any office).
Powell's speech was a 1991 Plagiarized Students paper garnered from the Internet. Powell knew it was a LIE but read it anyway. Major Colon Powell did his job in the coverup for the Pentagon during the Mi Lie Investigation in Vietnam as well as fostering Lies to support Bush's Illegal Terrorist invasion of Iraq.
#3: Do not disagree all that much, however, after the Powell "dog and pony"
show before the UN General Assembly(w/an artist conception drawing of the
mobile labs containing tubing), it is pretty evident that 98 percent of the
American public also thought/believed that Saddam had WMD. Deceit/lies
and misinformation by Powell is, in my opinion, the day that public got behind
the invasion....and we can blame it on two primary sources (1) Powell for
putting out uncorraborated statement and (2) the MSM for not doing it's
job and instead "led the pack" with such falsehoods...being the usual and
customary lazy bunch of turds who were like lemmings going over a cliff.
If powell was Japanese, and did what he did 5 years ago, he would be dead via his own sword. Where is the man's sense of honor?
Donald Cormac @ 3:
I wouldn't fault her 100 percent this is the same bunch that spawned the guy that claimed the internet was a series of tubes. All that power just makes them drunk and stupid.
She wasn't duped. She took the Bill path and supported the war. Hill didn't want to end up like Sam Nunn and be shut out of the nomination because she opposed the war. It was calculated like everything else. In the words of Cohen in the Post "only a Frenchman".
The day I lost all respect for Powell
Thundermonkey @10: If my memory is correct, there were 48 other U.S.Senators
who voted for the Resolution granting bush-lite his authority to move forward
so let's not point the finger at ONLY one Senator...they are all equally as guilty.
i remember listening to Powell live while driving in my car. it was compelling.
then i saw the photos and depictions on TV. "what the...???"
Powell's credibility was the neo-con-artists ace.
and, by god, it worked!
/kind of
//not really
///bastards!
dadams @ 5:
No, They should all be strung up by their necks.
The day Bush lied to the world on international TV via a puppet.
None of the remaining Democrats are going to get us out of Iraq.

America’s mainstream media, however, declared it “compelling.”
the same media that marginalized kucinich and edwards and will FORCE hillary down our throats!
warpigs!!!
manufacturers of opinion and consent!!
Too bad that scumbag destroyed his reputation shilling for pigs like Cheney. We could have had an Obama vs. Colin race.
"a couple of hundred thousand American troops, contractors, and mercenaries are still stewing in America’s longest and most ill-conceived war."
First of all, NOT ill-conceived. Illegal, immoral, unjust, criminal, genocide -- but all with the obvious intention of chasing the Caspian oil down the rabbit hole. Installing airbases is not an 'ill-conceived' purpose.
Secondly, "American troops, contractors, and mercenaries" is a misnomer. NO American can be a mercenary in an American invasion. They are privatized US soldiers, not mercenaries.
There ARE mercenaries in Iraq -- non-American racists from Korovet and other rightwing deathsquads are all over the place.
And be reminded that after Powell's "dog and pony show", it was George Tenent
who, within 10 days, came forward and told the media that he had told Powell
that much of the information presented was not confirmed by the CIA and in fact
was uncorroboated and that the CIA had no information supporting the "mobile
labs". (Of course bush-lite gave George Tenent the Medal of Freedom for doing such a "good job" as head of the CIA) And even later, Powell was quoted as
saying that "the worst day of his life" was when he appeared and gave his
statements before the UN Assembly...that statment was, of course, in retrospect.
I still say that the MSM is as guility as any individual because, as usual, they
failed in their responsibility to the American public.
OT, but, there is "Live Shame" going on right now on CNN. Media thug lou dobbs is taking an ass kicking by a representative of La Raza, and like his co-joined twin bill-o, he is talking over and shouting down the person he brought on the air to "discuss" racism. He won't let the woman get a word in edge-wise and she won't kow-tow to him. Lou is trying to make the argument about him, and she is calling him and the network out. And, now, lou-billo has just threatened to cut her mic off.
Powell is a pariah. HE should be in Iraq RIGHT NOW, trying to live one more day.
oZer @ 14:
I agree, even if I wasn't driving at the time. The main reason it was convincing to me is that I knew Powell's history. Listening to him, I said to myself, "if he's saying this, it must be true, because Powell wouldn't lie."
I watched him carefully for a long time after I learned that it was all BS. I thought I could see him sag. I thought I could see the guilt. I thought I could see a man who has sold his soul for a boy king and knew it.
But I might have been looking for this too hard. I might have been being defensive, thinking he must be feeling guilty since I trusted him before. But, for all I know, I was a fool the whole time.
"Day of Shame" is an excellent name. Because I share it.
nirak @ 12:
Me too. That was the most lame speech ever given at the UN. I remember being embarrassed even as he gave it.
Vote for the only candidate who wasn't duped by the dope. Vote Barack Obama.
JTM @ 23:
Then your education failed you. Powell's first big lie was when he covered up for the My Lai massacres.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Lai
We now know that at least TWENTY-FIVE village massacres took place by US troops during that same time period. Powell has been a toady to Pentagon power and warcrimes from start to finish.
It's a shame people here were duped by him, it's a bigger shame many Democrats were duped by him, and it'd be a shame if anyone was elected who fell for it and didn't apologize.
Mr. Powell is an intelligent man who was eager to please those of his party that wanted war.
He screwed up big time and should take his lumps like a man.
dadams Says: everyone in the bush administration should be in a fucking prison cell for life.
--------
...and a few enabling Democrats,as well.
Radically Moderate @ 28:
Read #26. His 'credibility' is a creation of the media and the corporate state.
Twice you claim he's a 'man.' I do believe he has the equipment, but find one time in his life when he acted like one.
Clay @ 27: Well, let's not forget to point a finger at all those stupid people
who voted for and re-elected bush-lites as "their" Prez. in 2004. They are
as dumb as any of the officials who voted for and who are still serving in office.
Powell is a bigger a-hole than Albert Speer in my opinion.
Lost all respect for that fool.
Willie Nelson "comes out". About a quarter of the way in it gets serious:

Day of shame? Tomorrow's my birthday.... :'(
In reference to the mention of tomorrow's primaries...what's with all of the vitriol coming form the Clinton camp? I check out DU every so often and I see a lot of the most popular threads are from Hillary supporters really up in arms against Obama. But it sounds like they're pissed as if the Obama campaign has been down right nasty and underhanded. Is this really what's going on? Because this isn't what I have seen. I've been an innoent bystander in all of this without injecting my opinion (because I forget my username and password over there!) but the rhetoric really seems ridiculous from those in the Clinton camp. Am I the only one noticing this, or is it on both sides?
Powell was the only one who was not a yes man to w.
You break it, you own it he told w.
He was punked by Saddam and slam dunk Tenet who said he would bet his life that Saddam had WMD's.
w gave him a medal for betting his life and being dead wrong.
May a giant pale of putrid shit fall upon all who wished for this war; then a pale of tar, then a pale of feathers, then a pale of Napalm. Bye!
Tell me I didn't just do that...
OK once again,
May a giant pail of putrid shit fall upon all who wished for this war; then a bucket of tar, then a container of feathers, then a hail of Napalm. Bye!
And what better way for the US military to mark the occasion than this:
U.S. Says 9 Iraqi Civilians Accidentally Killed
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - American troops accidentally killed nine Iraqi civilians while hunting down al Qaeda militants, the U.S. military admitted on Monday, the latest in a series of mistakes in which innocent Iraqis have died.
The deaths south of Baghdad on Saturday, which Iraqi police said were caused by a helicopter air strike, were announced as Iraq said it would soon begin talks with U.S. officials on an agreement covering the role of U.S. forces after a U.N. Security Council mandate expires at the end of 2008...
"...We offer our condolences to the families of those who were killed in the incident and we mourn the loss of innocent civilian life," it said in a statement e-mailed to Reuters.
"Boy is my face red!" added Uncle Sam, as he passed out crisp, new, one-dollar bills to 3 people who could prove that they were related to the freshly deceased.
why is it i wasnt taken in by powel and his monkey shit buddies , i didnt beleve a flucking word bush said!!!!!!!!!!
Paul in LA @ 30:
I see no point in a response.

That’s real hind sight stuff to say, especially when the majority of Senate was also duped, there is lot more about the issue than Just Hillary. Actually I admired Powell and trusted his judgment as many Americans did. But, that admiration was re-enforced when, on national television, Powell admitted his deception, which ruined his political career. That was sad.
What I’m worried about is the Democrats blowing the whole election with Obama as the nominee. Why I say that, for some of the same reasons perhaps, and imagine what happened at that Powell level. The lies they used are similar to what will be done with Obama. The Democrats know the Republicans will rip Obama’s record apart. Look at junk the Republicans are working through now between each other. Its mild compared to what they plan for Obama. And just as you say, Cormac, if they do job right to rip the shreds out of Obama, likely will also to make it a hard time for Obama to even get re-elected in Illinois.
The effort likely is already in motion and the dirt on Obama is already for Mainstream Media, hate radio, and the bloggers that will be relentless and create so much doubt Obama will dive in popularity, and McCain will soar to popularity. Remember in Illinois the Republicans have been burn were former Governor Ryan went to jail. They are very up set and getting ready for pay back. Likely collecting and planning a new front to crack the Democratic stronghold on cook county Illinois, or the Senate slot of Obama. I say this because of some of the hind sight I can use now.
The Republicans waged a challenge with Obama in the Senate race competing with Allen Keyes. Please America that was like throwing away the election. Allen Keyes frighten everyone to vote Obama thats was why it was a land slide. Allen Keyes is the perfect black man to throw an election. So, here we are. Obama has great inspiration and dreams but doesn’t know how to do anything plus admits that in his book called “Audacity of Hope”. You should read it Obama talks about white southern men and imagines they talk to their son’s about Nigers this and Nigers that. And he writes that in his book, when that gets out the shit will hit the fan.
Having the tapestry reproduction of Picasso's Guernica covered up for Powell's presentation is one thing that stands out for me from that day. It was such a foreboding act.
The day American lied to the world.
Just one of the many lies Bush has told.

It isn't America's longest war. Vietnam was longer. So was the revolutionary war.
He knew better . I used to believe in that bastard . Gomer Powell .
Also, you could count the occupation of the Philippines as longer, too, depending on what you consider to be "war".
Well if you want to be a stickler for detail TJS the full comment was "America’s longest and most ill-conceived war."
So how about giving it a rest?
I hear Powell wont have YELLOW CAKE
for his birthday
ha ha ha ha h ah
the war criminal knowingly lied.
Vietnam was pretty ill-conceived.
I still like Colin Powell. He was bambozeled like the rest of us into believing Saddam was a threat. It took years for most of us to realize that Bush was a big fat liar. Now we know better.
Colin Powell, it’s time to speak now or forever hold your peace.
You decried the way that “the sons of the powerful and well placed…managed to wangle slots into Reserve and Guard Units"[1] and then you went on to serve one of these sons as his Secretary of State.
You criticized the LBJ administrations prosecution of the Vietnam War with “Back home, the administration was trying to conduct the war with as little inconvenience to the country as possible…. Taxes to finance the war had not been raised. Better-off kids beat the draft with college deferments."[2] And now you sit silently while the Bush administration does the same.
You said of the downing of the KAL 007 flight: “Don’t be stampeded by first reports, Don’t let your judgments run ahead of your facts. And, even with supposed facts in hand, question them if they do not add up. Something deeper and wiser than bits of data inform our instincts. I also learned that it is best to get the facts out as soon as possible, even when new facts contradict the old. Untidy truth is better than smooth lies…."[3] But you told the world that we knew of WMD’s in Iraq. Perhaps you were misinformed by the intelligence briefings but you also wrote: “The lesson about experts had been reaffirmed. Don’t be afraid to challenge the pros, even in their backyard. Just as important, never neglect details, even to the point of being a pest."[4]
“If I never have to parachute again, that will be fine with me, yet there was never any doubt in my mind that I would do what had to be done."[5] Well Mr. Powell, it’s time to do what has to be done. You have a chance to make a difference today, this week, “Stuff happens. And a leader’s just got to start all over again."[6] So start over. If you have truth to speak, speak it now, before another day of Bush Administration's deception so it can make a difference. You’ve had plenty to say, after the fact, about Vietnam and other world events, but saving the truth for My American Journey Part II isn’t good enough. You owe the soldiers, those you helped place in harms way, the untidy truth. Today.

Where were all you people in 2003? Up here in Canada I saw that speech and couldn't believe the response in the noise of the US media. "Powell makes a compelling case" "Damning evidence", etc. etc. There was none of that IN the actual speech. What did 'they' see in his words, and why did no one - and as far as I can remember it was actually NO ONE - take a second look or raise an objection?
It's like the mediagasm that went on when Bush 'landed' the plane on the aircraft carrier. Every pundit saw it as a PR homerun. I was sitting there thinking "How can they be duped by this stupid tactic?"
If any sense could be made of the last six years, if this was a just world, then Bush and Co would be in jail, Powell would be afraid to show his face, and every pundit of the time would be out of a job.
It was a terrible day.....and Powell should be ashamed of himself...as he is responsible for that " performance".....but the media should be ashamed too...they did NO Investigation- they were too busy getting ready to pump their damn Sweeps ratings with a war.... ( they didn't Investigate 911 either- so I guess it is not totally shocking...)
No One was "bamboozled", people were spoonfed Propaganda by a Corrupt Criminal Government.....but many of us have tried to spread the Truth...
Thank you C&L for spreading the Truth these past 3 years...
this brings me back to those painful days... watching Ted kennedy ignored by MSM, watching Robert Bird's the most powerful speech against war echoing away through the empty senate chamber. we have lost so many Americans and Iraqis, so much tax payers money that could have spent here wasted... where was Hillary and Bill Clinton? this is why I can't vote for Hillary.
MR POWELL WILL HAVE TO LIVE WITH THE SHAME OF HIS COWARDACE...
SAD FOR THE LAST ACT OF THE MAN HE WAS...
-----------OR HE COULD STEP UP AND EMBRACE OBAMA... IT WON'T BRING BACK THE DEAD BUT IT MIGHT HELP SAVE THE LIVING
Where is Collin Powell these days?
the msm was complicite in the lie. everyone who opposed the invasion was being shouted down and generally disrespected by the hosts on cnn and msnbc. it's bad enough that they didn't research the facts, but when they argue with the people who did know the facts, you can only conclude that they were complicite.
dadams @ 5:
Not Colin Powell. He was lied to, as we all were. The administration presented him with selected information helping their cause, and he went along with it with any idea that he was being duped.
Doggiebobo @ 31:
There are no such people.
Bush NEVER won election to the White House.
joshsirjoshules @ 60:
That's hilarious. Colin Powell knows more about American atrocities to date than any of us. He knew what was going down, and he did his duty to his Pentagon masters.
And screwed the troops, and his country, as hard as any of them.
Colin Powell has the distinction of committing war crimes in four wars. Viet Nam: covering up the My Lai massacre, Panama - attacking neighborhoods, First Gulf War - attacking the infrastructure of Iraq and Second Iraq War - lying to the UN and Congress and anyone else who was listening in order to start a war of aggression.
He has no chance for redemption. He will answer to St. Peter. I damn him to hell.
Ali @ 58:
So far not testifying to the House & Senate Select Committees on Republican Treason.
Domino @ 63:
There is no hell, and Saint Peter is a pile of bones.
Still, there is a Christian redemption waiting, in testifying against his masters.
dadams @ 5:
At the very least. Saddam and Milosevic paid the ultimate price for using their people, their country and for killing countless numbers of innocent people in the process. Bush and Cheney spending life in prison would be getting off easy.
Ruthless People @ 66:
...Powell, he was a mere accompli. Life without parole might be punishment enough for him.
Big Dick Cheney @ 57:
Powell, like most GOP blacks, is an uncle tom sell out. He would never support Obama.
marko @ 17:
The media has a pronounced dislike for Hillary. Even the Broders, Brookses, Wills, and Limbaughs like "Barry," as Rush chummily calls him.
They hated Edwards in a more deadly way, of course, as they made him invisible (except for derision as an angry guy with a big house and a fancy haircut).
JungleFreak @ 35:
Well, I remember Colin Powell as the man who ruined my country on that day.
You can remember me as the guy who made your birthday into a holiday of shame. Sorry.
Thing Fish @ 43:
I think the best graphic ever is the one that decorates the White House version of the Colin Powell Report: "Iraq: Denial and Deception." The one true thing they ever said.
1400+ days since mission accomplished.............The Iraqi people are going to sue our ass's off when this all blows over........
I will never be able to look at Powell without thinking how this "good negro" let Bush and Cheney shit on his career and reputation. He also protected the Bush Crime Family before the 04 elections by not speaking out concerning the many lies Bush told that he was aware of. Condi, Clarence and Colin the three worst black people in America.
I talked to some people right after that speech and nobody believed a word. It was two years after 9/11 you'd think think the shock would have worn off.
Has it only been five years since those delightful cut-away drawings of Iraqi mobile chemical labs. Its a shame the Pentagon owns the copy right of those drawings because Airfix could make some cool models out of them
Steve @ 75:
I'm not sure that there are copyright issues.
After all, you're paying for it.
Your kids will pay for it.
Their kids will pay for it...
I remember watching it happen in front of me, and seeing US credibility being forever destroyed.
Charles @ 77:
Forever is an absurd adjective. If you thought America had the kind of credibility that can be destroyed forever, you were wrong.
Any country can have a coup.
vastleft @ 71:
And the page at Whitehouse.gov is still up there. Unbelievable. Some don't have any shame.
Have to admit I was a Powell apologist even after his U.N. sideshow. I tried to justify his actions. Comparing what he did to what Wotton said about ambassadors, an "honest man sent to lie abroad for the good of his country." Or how he was a good soldier who was asked to fall on his sword.
The My Lai business, his involvement with showing the Iraqi's how to use chemical weapons during the Iraq/Iran war, they were the warning signs.
My mistake was not looking into his past and only seeing him in comparison to Cheney, Condi, and the rest of the neo-con crew.
Now I feel that Powell lost his chance for redemption by going ahead and shilling for the Bush administration at the U.N. And his reward was this goodbye from someone even more clueless than me:
We should memorialize this day every year.
colin powell should have his nose rubbed in it every day for the rest of his life.
Every time I see Bush give the State of the Union, I remember how he lied to me, and to Congress, and to everyone else. It was the last speech of his that I watched. I was urged to watch by someone who said that it would be a speech of great importance. I just hope that it will ultimately be remembered as the point where power over-reached, before it was ultimately brought to justice.
oZer @ 14:
It was compelling but it still never made sense to me that Iraq was an imminent threat. If anything, of all the countries that could be a threat to the US Iraq had to be on the bottom of the list:
1) Iraq was under two no fly zones. I recall the minute anything went up in the air over Iraq, the Air Force was on it in seconds
2) The Iran-Iraq war had taken it's toll on Iraq's military
3) Iraq was under continual threat of arms inspections
4) Iraq was under a stranglehold from economic sanctions
5) Saddam was an isolated madman
6) Al Qaida had nothing to do with Saddam. I never heard or knew of any collaboration between bin Laden and Saddam before 911
7) bin Laden and Saddam were religious opposites
8) Why the rush to invade Iraq when we never finished the job in Afghanistan. Osama was still on the loose.
With all those factors in mind the drumbeat and saber rattling never made sense to me. I kept telling my wife Iraq couldn't possibly be a threat to the US after the pummeling they took during the Gulf War and the stranglehold and isolation they were under. I also mentioned if we were to invade Iraq extremist factions would turn on our military and start picking them off.
When I saw those trailer pictures my first thought was they just came up with that stuff as a lame excuse to invade. It all seemed trumped up. It's obvious the Administration had an agenda for the invasion. To me it was nothing but an opportunity to take advantage of the oil and give greedy American companies an opportunity to rape Iraq.
Everyone of those fools in the Administration in their neo-con supporters who came up with this scheme should be put away for life. The relatives of those 1 million Iraqis killed will hold the US responsible for their loss. The hatred will last for generations.
He eats the corn and peanuts out of bushs doodoo.
" THE YEARS OF SHAME-FULL PLANNING ". (BEFORE 9/11)
I'm just guessing.
FRIENDS! We must take a dicision, today, we've done our work and our goal is clear, now, this night we must decide!
All our hard work for the last two years has to be met with our unanimous vote to go forward and execute our plan, or we must put the matters on hold, maby to infinity!
They voted unanimous for the game-plan, THEYR terrible multy-layered game-plan, and started to get things moving.
" WE NEED A PEARL HARBOR KIND OF CATASTROFE TO SHOCK THE NATION(PNAC) INTO FEAR AND OBEDEANCE! WE MUST BRING TERROR ON OUR CITIZENS AND WE MUST CONTROL THEIR INDIGNATION AND THEIR ANGER".
Then they moved on;
All was said and written down in THEYR agenda's, next thing planned was the ultimate cover-up and the way's and means to do so.
TWC building 7 47 floors highrise, was not just a building or a location, it was
" THE HIGHRISE AND THE LOCATION "! INPENETRABLE AND THE BEST SECURED HIGHRISE AND LOCATION TO BE FOUND IN THE BIG APPLE!
Well, they took a bite out of that, did'nt THEY?
47 floors collapsed 'almost freefall' in a thunderers roar ignited by the scemes and planning of the very rich and powerfull who came 'there' many times together before 9/11 to disclose to eachother the miriad of THEYR planned progress and turns in strategy. Building 7 was contaminated with THEYR progress-reports, THEYR dicisions, and THEYR (they had coffees and leaks and meals and dumps, ect.) DNA!
WCT building 7 was a hazard to THEYR LIVES.
I'm just guessing.
Later, much later, came the DAY OF SHAME for Colin Powell, and I dont know if he was realy into THEYR scemes, But I do know that Colin Powell resigned when he saw the truth about the WMD's and the lies with wich THEY made "HIM" the messenger to send the Nation into war.
If it ever come's to a second "NEUREMBERG-TRAIL", Colin Powell should be in it for his actions and his misconducts, or at least as a witness, I'm sure he knows (now) many a policy-illegality that would help to put THE criminals in a high-secured wel located building from where THEY cannot come out.
GUANTANAMO BAY seems the place to put them!
The day I lost all respect fo Powell.
Did everyone forget how he was responsible for scuttling Clinton's proposal to accept gays in the military...how Powell testified that it would hurt "morale" too much, entirely forgetting that that's what they had said about African Americans serving in the army alongside whites just a generation before?
Also, I've always wanted the artist who did those 3D drawings of the alleged mobile labs to be interviewed. Just who was it that told him/her what to draw?
And finally, a week after Powell's February 2003 presentation, the MSM virtually ignored the GIANT anti-war march in NYC. The New York Times relegated it to the back of the front section across from the obits and completely ignored the significance of the internet in the first-time coordination of thousands of anti- Iraq war marches across the globe.
colon powell
aptly named for such a vital part of the busch apparatus
Face it Colin, you're done. As a principle coarchitect of this human rights tragedy, just go away and stay gone. You can't put this shit back in your ass(Colin).
Powell has shattered his reputation... I hope all those responsible are haunted for the rest of their lives.
What a tragic figure Powell is. He was admired by people in both parties, by the political left and right, and he could have been the first African-American president, easily. General, statesman, executive...he had it all going for him.
But you can take the battlefield from the soldier without taking the soldier from the battlefield. After his speech at the U.N. was proven to be all wrong, after it was clear Powell had spoken falsely about uranium/Niger, what did this brave soldier do? Did he apologize for leading us into a disastrous war? Never. Did he criticize his bosses, or call out the people who fed him the bogus intelligence? Never. He simply disappeared into the ether. Good soldier? Maybe. Good leader? Don't think so.
Obama & Powell... Dream ticket... for disaster.
I never believed the sons of bitches from day 1. They weren't elected. But I believed Colin Powell. At least he had integrity, or so was thought.
Whether his mistake was through coercion, stupidity, or duplicity, the result is the same 7 years on; We're fucked as a country. Militarily, economically, internationally.
Thanks for nothing, shithead.
Powell is a traitor...
Every day I expect to read how the vile traitor Powell did the one decent thing left to him...locked himself in a dark room and blew his brains out.
Every day I am disappointed.
It's shameful the disgrace that Colin Powell has become...and how tragic and inconcievable the consquence of this administrations lies...
See how the covering up of Picasso's Guernica at the Security Council for Powell's speech on February 5, 2003, deprived us of key anti-war and anti-torture messages at http://blogs.law.harvard.edu/stoptorture/2008/02/04/the-picasso-principl...
