Westboro Baptist Church Pickets Mike Huckabee In Kansas

GOP presidential candidate Mike Huckabee campaigned in Topeka, Kansas today and was greeted by Rev Fred Phelps' homophobic flock from the Westboro Baptist Church. Huckabee has recently equated homosexuality with pedophilia and has suggested that AIDS victims should be quarantined, but apparently that just isn't enough hatred of teh gay for these people. These people are repulsive, but I had to chuckle at the sight of homophobic religious fanatics protesting another homophobic religious fanatic.

I wish all these idiots would go find themselves a country (or island or planet or whatever) that doesn't have gays, so they can live and be happy little bigots! But they should leave America, we don't need them or want them!

I think maybe the Phelps gang ( many of them are lawyers ) are just gaming the system. They go around saying the most vile things, supposedly in the name of their god, almost begging to be censured, then sue if their free speech rights are infringed. It beats working.

If there is one thing that tends to unite repugs and dems, it is the sharing of laughter at the Westboro Baptist Church and it's psychotic leader; Freddy Kruger...err...Phelps. Even here in Australia, we can't help but chuckle quietly at the thought of such a guy being given a platform of sorts to spout nut-baggery.
In the case of attending marines funerals and peoples private gatherings, sometimes Freedom of Speech is bad, mmmkay?

I work in Kirkwood Mo. and today I talked with people who knew Cookie Thornton the creep that killed 5 people at an Alderman Meeting.
I do not know what party he supported however everyone said he was a very religeous man saying "god bless you" to many he met but he had a profound hatred for authority.
Thorntons Brother said he was justified going to war against city hall......WTF! I knew the Woman that was killed and I knew another Alderman that escaped. Yes, Fred Phelps and his minions are insane/demented/brainwashed BUT they do way more good than they could ever imagine. I live near Topeka and we've had to witness their antics over and over, but think about it, NOBODY squares their shoulders and says, "Yeah, I'm with the Phelpses." People who are somewhat homophobic, or otherwise backward thinking, and those who have never really thought about it, are all drawn into the conversation and all but the occasional crazyass oddball come to the conclusion that the Phelpses are hateful and wrong. And the anti-Phelps actions that raise money for local GLBT groups are creative and priceless. You gotta read this (link below). It's one of the best stories I've ever heard:

Don't forget that Fred Phelps ran three times in the Democratic primaries for the Governor of Kansas (90, 94, 98) and that he also ran in the Democratic primary in Kansas for US Senator in 92.
The sad part is that he actually got 30% of the vote in that Senate primary.

The words used on Fred Phelps posters are the same words that other baptists say in their prayers. Fred Phelps and Mike Huckabee are both insane with hate, but only one of them is delusional enough to think God wants him to be President.
The Phelps group used to just protest gays and their allies at rally's, etc.
They branched out. The only thing they're rally concerned about is their right to free speech and money. Phelp's 2 daughter and husbands are lawyers. They intend to press and press hate everywhere under the guise of their's (and others) interprtation that gays are immoral-and they hope to be attacked by others, allowing them to file a law suit. Thjys make a lot of money and it's how they make enough as well to go around the country getting "famous."
Americans didn't stand up much when these horrible attacks (using thier little kids to protest hate) were strickly aimed at gays and their protest projects. Since the group moved to include military funerals and other venues to spew their hate, America seems to be paying more attention. One soldiers father recently sued Phelp's group and won. A gay person bringing suit has never won.
In a small way, Phelp's is helping progressives. They do a lot of emotional and spiritual damage to young and old in the process.

Saw a documentary by an Englishman called Louise Theroux (Spelling?) and he hung out with these idiots for a few days/weeks. He asked lots of good questions to expose their complete lack of humanity, but he didn't ask one question that I would have; when Rev Phelp's daughter proclaimed they didn't care if people hated them because they weren't trying to win souls, the obvious question would have been "Then what's the point in picketing at all? Why not go back to your homes and churches and wait for the rapture?"
And for the record (and for people offended that people could laugh at the irony of the story) I do find it funny the thought of haters protesting haters. Humour is a perfectly valid human way of dealing with all this f**ked up world has to offer.
