We have good news and bad news. The good news is the 60 Minutes has decided to rescind their choice to kill the Don Siegelman story. The bad news is that they've decided to effectively kill the Don Siegelman story out in the open by airing it this Sunday opposite the Academy Awards show.

Guess that's what TIVO is for...

Oscar night is the best night of the year to go see a movie.

Given that all the big awards are near the end, I don't think your casual Oscar viewers would mind turning to 60 minutes until the real action begins. And the only reason I can think of to tune in to the entire friggin' affair is John Stewart.

My thoughts exactly, I cannot for the life of me understand why anyone would want to spend 2 hours of their life watching these things. If you really care about who wins the awards then just spend 30 seconds glossing over them in the paper the next day or on the internet that night.

LOS ANGELES - Jewels and parties. Stars and stand-ins. Rehearsals and news conferences. So much swag even Hollywood canines could rack up free goodies. The city is abuzz with all things Oscar as celebrities flock from all over the world for Sunday's Academy Awards.

Here on the East Coast 60 minutes airs 7-8 PM EST and the Oscars begins at 8:30 PM so we won't have any conflict. Just out of curiosity, what are the air times in the Central, Mountain, and Pacific time zones? Anybody in those zones on line from those zones?

And what about Hawaii and Puerto Rico, do you guys have conflicts too?

It's not the best programming time slot but it may still get a bigger audience than we expect.
I haven't watched the oscars since I was in high school and even then it was just an excuse to stay up late. Now I just read the list of the winners the day after.

A one-time showing on a major network is no longer the only way to disseminate a story.

For every person who would see this on broadcast TV, Oscars or no Oscars, countless more will see it on the Net. And not just this Sunday.

I always watch the Oscars but its my way of getting even for the guys watching the Super Bowl. However, I'll be watching 60 minutes FIRST this week-end. I was living in Bama when they railroaded Sielgeman and what happened there is what we used to call "third world justice". There is a Governor of Alabama that deserves to be sitting in prison alright, Riley. Right next to Rove, Chenney and Shrub.

Four hours of that? If that gets good ratings, then we're too stupd to be trying this "democracy" thing.

ChrisM70's picture

You can also watch most 60 minutes stories on the CBS news website, as well as download it from iTunes.

Of course, this doesn't really get the story to the average dumb American voter, does it?

The Oscars air live on the Pacific Coast, and I believe in at least CST as well. So outside of EST, there's a conflict. The Oscars aren't the Super Bowl, but the viewership is pretty high.

As to hating the Oscars... I'm a film buff as well as a political junkie (as I imagine many folks are here), there are some great films nominated this year, and I have a blast at the annual Oscar party I attend. I'll tape 60 Minutes, but I'm looking forward to seeing some superb work honored and making snarky comments about Hollywood excess with some fun folks. (News junkies might want to check out the nominees for Best Documentary Feature, BTW.)

Who watches the Oscar's anymore. The winners are picked before the votes go out and usually some crap wins. I havent' watched them for the last ten years.

I have been going thru my DVD's to find something to watch now I have something to watch, because I don't usually watch 60 minutes any more either. THANK GOODNESS WE HAVE CABLE.

I guess you know what I'll be watching in that time slot. CBS.

John's picture

I think far fewer people watch the Oscars than in the past. They're on their way to becoming a relic, like Miss America - which is now on life-support on The Learning Channel. There are too many awards shows and most of the crowd-pleasing films never get nominated anyway. The speeches are dull, the antics and self-centered cluelessness of the pampered celebrities are irritating and the whole Oscar show is bloated and tedious. The people I've talked to this year are not only NOT watching the Oscars, they have no idea what and who was nominated and don't much care. 60 Minutes viewers, on the other hand, tend to be fairly loyal and will definitely skip, what is it now - the 43rd award show so far this year? Give it another 10 years and the Oscars will be relegated to Nickolodeon where they belong.

Why are you people perpetually surprised by the behavior of social darwinists? They will kick your ass precisely because you dont get it and are always surprised.

Ask yourself this - what are they doing right now that you dont know about and cant imagine? You'll be surprised again with the next discovery.

You are a step behind all the way.

These people are social darwinian thugs and you need to understand what they want, what they can do and game it out. You cant assume decency or reason. These are predators.

I worked for a cable company in the late 90's and had all the movie channels. At one point I would record up to three different movies at the same time. I now have a selection of over 4000 movies to chose from, on VHS!!

It's hard to imagine how folks in Alabama cannot be ashamed of themselves...then again it's not really that hard. Alabama was one of only two states on Super Tuesday that cast more ballots in the Republican Primary than was cast in the Democratic one...the other one was my home state of Georgia. I used to think that it was simply the effect of bottom-feeding education systems, but more and more it's become obvious that it's on which side of the 'right and wrong' ledger you place deceit, bigotry and greed. We/they are who we are and, sadly, seem to be proud of it. It'll be a long time, and probably never, before the collective conscience of these two states will overcome the arrogance enough for us to, indeed, feel shame. Because if you think that deceit, bigotry and greed are all good, then what's there to be ashamed of?

I'll watch 60 Minutes. The Acadamy Awards is a dinosaur on life support anyway.

It is interesting how we Americans bestow awards for various reasons. Awards are everywhere, in our schools, in our workplaces and in our leisure activies. I won the 1st grade spelling bee way back when (the prize was an ice cream cone). People win sales contests and bowling trophys all the time. We see awards in professional sports and even award the best newcomers with rookie of the year. Usually the awards are for doing whatever it is better than the competitors in that field.

Having said that, look how fucked up the awards for government service have been under the Bush administration. Maybe that has something to do with people's distain for awards today.

I'm just playin - you're right - all these awards, and the stupidity of some of them have managed to cheapen all of them. Jon Stewart,
I challenge you to have a pair of balls the size of the God Stephen Colbert, may his name be forever praised, and ask the Oscar audience to watch 60 minutes. Colbert, may his name be forever praised, took on the entire washington establishment at the National Press Club dinner where Colbert, may his name be forever praised, managed to dis the entire Washington press corp and Presnit Chimpy who was sitting not five feet away and who took almost ten minutes to realized that something was terribly wrong. It's probably still on youtube.

This story is too large to not be told. I am just thankful that it is receiving any major media attention, even if it is against the Oscars. I think it will be talked about after a few people see it. I just hope they tell the whole story, it is very complex and is the most damning story of the them against the whole Republican party.

Can't Jon Stewart simply make a note that the story on CBS is worth watching?

Can't every award presenter and recipient?

Oh, that's right. They're only progressive when it gets them our money. When more money is in being conservative, they're that.

Don Siegelman appeared in court with the best legal team money can buy. After all the evidence was heard, Siegelman was convicted by a jury of his peers. Sigelman's corruption was no secret in the state of Alabama during his administration as Governor. The local news media exposed his corruption for many years:

I agree. I can do what I want with my evening, and if I really want to know which awards were won by which film, I can look it up later. Instead of killing 3+ hours, I can get all the info in less than 30 seconds. Add to that, why do people care about the awards? Watch the movies and decide for yourself which ones are good. Have we become so lazy that we need some paternal organization to tell us what we should like?

Matt From Alabama's picture

@57

Agreed. Don Siegelman and Richard Scrushy are two of the biggest crooks this state has ever seen. I'm really sorry that the otherwise intelligent people on this blog and elsewhere have been hoodwinked by the Scrushy/Siegelman whine-fest.

I don't know what the hell you're talking about. Alabama is a HEAVILY Republican state. I'm not surprised at all that the 'pubs had a higher turnout. But c'mon! We voted for a black man...IN ALABAMA! Either I'm too eager to celebrate small victories or you're a major negative nancy. Maybe both.

Hey folks, the Oscars don't start until 8 pm Eastern time, which is after 60 Minutes ends in the east and central time zones. that means the vast majority of americans will not have a conflict between the two shows. on the west coast, of course, a 7 pm start for 60 minutes will conflict, but everyone should take heart that the academy awards will not preclude most people from seeing the story.

I don't need TIVO for this.

The OSCARS mean nothing to me except a list of who is politically on top in Hollywood. It is an industry show.. not a show for the people who buy the product.

They showed their true colors back in 1992 (?) when they gave an Oscar to BIG BIRD from Sesame Street and SKIPPED OVER MALCOM X WITH SPIKE LEE.

Everyone knows Spike Lee deserved that Oscar. And Malcom X should have swept the Oscars that year.

So I quit watching back then and don't miss it at all.
