The right has been going nuts over the McCain lobbyist scandal and how evil the New York Times is, but thanks to the DemRapidResponse Channel on YouTube, who dug up some CNN clips from the 2000 presidential campaign, we are reminded that George W. Bush went after John McCain for the very same issue that he and the GOP are now attacking the Times for in 2008 -- lobbyists.

Bush, using a 2000 Wall Street Journal article on McCain's lobbyist ties, attacks him for being a D.C. insider, flying on corporate jets and taking big money from lobbyists in return for favors. And it bears repeating -- Drudge ran with this story months before the New York Times. Maybe it's time for the president and the right wing pundits and politicians to dial back the indignation?

BUSH: "It's important on campaign funding reform that we have campaign funding reform. But it's also important for people to know that my friend is raising money from people who have business in front of his committee. Nothing illegal about that, but I just want to make sure the facts are laid bare."

BUSH: "What I need to do is make it clear and not let Senator McCain get away with this Washington double-talk."

The GOP will (PRETEND TO) take the high road, jettison McPAIN as their nominee for some technical reason and install another

cheerleader like Reagan/Bush to be the front for the NEOCONS in November.

Think that is unrealistic? I don't!

Yes, it's really hard to hear anything W says and look in the opposite direction for the truth. Had Enron already provided him with their private jet at this point?

People need to get this out. Got a blog? Post it there. MySpace or Facebook? That's what bulletins are for. And so forth. If we can get this out to the MSM, it'll severely damage McCain.

The more I see of John McCain the more he reminds me of the old ancient Roman Senators. Greed and power are all that John McCain cares about. Bush was correct in his assessment and he ought to know.  After all, Bush is cut from that same cloth.

Wow, the Republicans will need serious, measurable levels of cognitive dissonance to vote for McCain after this. It would make an excellent science project, seeing if one can scoop up the excess cognitive dissonance that will have to be surrounding the voting booths and take it back to the lab for study.

At this point they would probably need to turn to Romney since they pretty much hate Huckabee and Giuliani. I suppose they could bring in someone like Gingrich or Frist. Both have been out of the lime-light long enough to start with a clean slate. The problem with switching candidates is that it really weakens the candidate. By having to replace his first running mate George McGovern's campaign was really hurt.

Isn't that cute. Bush is setting the precedent for composing bogus "legal opinion" to provide retroactive cover for felonies.

"Well, our lawyers told us that it wasn't illegal to receive bribes er, money from people with business in front of our committee."

Fucking assholes.

By the way, I saw Anderson Cooper tonight for five minutes and I couldn't believe how he was framing this issue. Its bad enough when NPR says "McCain had to counter 9 year-old charges of mismanagement." What? If it takes nine years for the media to catch up on things, he gets a pass? And its not "mismanagement" its fucking breaking the law. Anderson Cooper says it in the same breath as talking about how Clinton and Obama are "exchanging barbs," like its not even a legal issue, like its just about his personality or something.

Meanwhile, no one brings up the sworn deposition that McCain made about the Paxon exchange. Yesterday, he said he never met with Paxon (in contradiction of the deposition.) Today he says that, yes, he met with Paxon, but he didn't write the letters at his behest, it was just coincidental.

He should listen to Mark Twain, "If you tell the truth you don't have to remember anything."

I think that if the GOP were to ditch McCain as their nominee they would have to go with someone who is already well known and could pull the most voters. Huckabee can pull the Social Conservative vote but little else. Guiliani is seen as to "Liberal" like McCain and Gingrich and Frist, though well known, may not be able to pull the party together in such a short period of time.

The GOP has to see that both Obama and Clinton are very powerful opponents in their own right and both, no matter which one becomes the nominee,  will be very difficult to beat as they both are drawing a lot of support from Independents.  If the GOP did decide to go with someone else that candidate would have to be well known already, and can pull together the most GOP voters quickly.  Romney, in my opinion may be the best candidate to do just that.  He can get the foreign policy hawks, economic Conservatives as well as many Socially Conservative Evangelicals though they may not like his Mormon beliefs.  If McCain's popularity falls through the floor and the GOP knows it will lose we might just see a Romney come back.

Shorter version:

Who told him it was legal, David Addison or John Yoo?

John McCain is a criminal, and his current statements conflict with sworn testimony he made in 2002.

Joe O.'s picture

I might also add that if this current McCain scandal goes so deep or that other scandals follow and that it is almost assured that the Dems win the White House then we could very well see a new GOP nominee. There is a lot on the line here for the GOP.  The GOP has to know that if they lose the White House they will lose it all. The GOP is so unpopular now that it is possible to see a complete Dem sweep of the House, Senate, and White House. Not to mention most of the Governors.

No, I don't believe that's the way to go.

If you think about it, there has been a near constant output from Republicans of stuff along these lines; representatives and staffers and lobbyists thrown in jail, constant investigations, TV preachers caught screwing other boys etc etc etc.

I say each time a Conservative screws up, and not a disagreement over policy or differences in "what should we do about X", but when they really, demonstrably screw up, an issue ad should be made about it, and dumped onto the airwaves.

Keep up a constant drumbeat of the following themes:

Republican = bad
Republican = corrupt
Republican = incompetent
Republican = hypocrite
etc

You'll never sway the ~20% of die hard republicans, but you can get it driven into the heads of the big middle, people who always list themselves as "undecided", people who don't make up their minds who to vote for until the last day before an election, that the LAST person you should consider is a republican.

Hang who they are, and how they've fucked up around their necks like a dozen millstones, and then throw them overboard.

John A. Please run a post on the links between John McCain and Alabama Gov. Bob Riley. This ties to the railroading of Don Seigelman. McCain needed some favors from Riley so he left him off the Ambramoff scandal. Riley’s campain manager’s wife was the District attorney who started the sweeping investigations into Seigelman but had to eventually recuse herself. She was appointed by Bush. Remember some other District attorney’s who got fired for not opening this type of investigation back in the 2006 elections?? This story stinks to high heaven. I look forward to seeing what you guys have to say, I’m a big fan. Here’s a link to my tiny blog about this story, hope it helps.
