Are they running for President or Pastor-in-Chief?

Don't answer that, Mister Huckabee. And the pandering is on both sides of the aisle. This video from The Interfaith Alliance proves what I said in December of 2006, that athiest author "Sam Harris and company will have to hold their noses when Obama gives his acceptance speech in Denver..."

The most glaring example has to be Tim Russert's "favorite Bible verse" debate question. I would have answered, "Why Tim! It's John 11:35! You know, "Jesus wept." And if he heard your stupid, pandering question, he's weeping again today."

On topic are Bruce Wilson's excellent article, "How Fake American History Feeds Christian Nationalism," and The Reverend Barry Lynn's editorial, "Thou Shalt Not Mix Religion and Politics."

I think I'd quote the passage about the she bears mauling children who made fun of the prophet. Then I'd say I expect a compliant press corps.

They're running for Master of the Universe in their own tiny little rat brains.

Cuz it ain't all that big, nor mysterious, or even old....just 6000 years!

God only favor's white christian republicans.

Thats the message.

Fuck all of them. There is no place for these kinds of questions AND answers in our political system.

Notice how these wing nuts always manage to stop just short of calling for the outright, systematic extermination of homosexuals, abortion providers, non-christians, and, of course, liberals?

why would jesus weep? i don't recall jesus touting for the separation of church and state.

Many of us Commie Christians feel "render unto Caesar" is exactly that, Barrett.

Pastor-in-Chief isn't quite the right term, I think - it's more like Earthly-Mouthpiece-of-the-CHRISTIAN GOD-in-Chief.

Does anyone believe that a non-Christian would ever stand a chance of being elected in America? America is completely enmeshed with Christianity now, much to the dismay of Atheists like me. We Atheists are going to find out just how kind, loving and tolerant these Christians really are once they start purging us from their God blessed America.

Everybody quotes the Jesus wept line. I get it. I remember how it was a staple for simplicity and depth when searching for an example in writing classes about twenty years ago.

What are some of the snappier Old Testament "Holy-Shit-Am-I-Gonna-Make-You-Pay" lines? Those could come in handy.

I don't care what anybody says. I don't anyone telling which dinosaur rode on Noah's Ark.

I won't believe Huckabee is a True christian until he whores his daughter out (he doesn't have one? Darn ...) - stones his wife - kills his boys and offers up a burning oxen on the steps of the Capital.

All the politicians talk like preachers, like they the fucking parent and we the child.

Just don't mix religion and politics if one of your church members is a Democratic Presidential candidate.

Is the IRS going to audit that (New Hampshire?) church where DumbF/HucKKKthin gave a sermon during primary season? Just asking.

Isaiah 55: 8 - "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord."

I'm telling you, the Old Testament is all they're reading. That's the god these boobs like.

Jeebus don't sell on the campaign trail.

It's all about who smote who, and who's laughing now while somebody else is burning in Hell.

Who would Jesus elect?

Who cares!

GIVE ME MY FRIGGING COUNTRY BACK!

FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK!

FUCK!

These people are ruining the country.

Obama, you are a HUGE disappointment on this issue.

SHAME. ON. YOU.

Hypocrisy never so complete as it is from the mouth of a "christian" re-PIG-lican.

ummm....have you all forgotten the 2000 campaign?

the candidates have been forced into this position because of the power given to the bible thumpers

In point of fact, the old scholars misread the original on the Jesus wept line.

It should have read "Jesus swept." Everybody knows this. It's all about context.

See? Still short and punchy. Lots of mystery there still. What did he sweep? Where did he sweep it? Where'd he get the broom? Why wasn't there someone around to seep for him? And so on.

really, i don't care if an otherwise good candidate does his lip service to jeebus. i just have to hope he stops it once he's prez.

i'd like to see a secularist candidate, but fat chance he'd get elected. the best we can hope for is a secularist in sheeps clothing.

Luke 20:25-He said to them, "Then give to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's."

Even the most "liberal" politician ignores the separation of church and state. Otherwise how can pretty much the entire house vote for a bill "supporting Christianity" last December. Either the country is plain stupid or there are a lot of politicians out there who don't have the balls to stand up for the constitution (I was hoping Kucinich would, but no). The idiots (yes, anyone who thinks faith is more important than good ideas is an idiot) own this country and the rest of us who think rationally can't (or won't) do anything about it.

Mr. McCain has a long family history in the Epicopal church, but he's now a Baptist. His church belongs to the dreaded Southern Baptist Confederacy, or whatever they're calling themselves these days.

He needs to be poked with a few pointed questions.

Oh things like the separation of church and state, prayer in schools, creationism, and the relative age of the universe. And of course, how did Noah get pairs of all the dinosaurs on the Ark. What was Jesus' favorite dinosaur. Things like that.

What a shameful strangle-hold religion and so-called 'faith' has on this country.

They ridiculed Jesus as a moonbat radical new age liberal even during his time.

Nothings changed with these people.

I wish people would read Article VI of the Constitution.

I'm glad McCain believes in evolution, but he still needs to be probed on how much religion will impact his thinking on governance.

He also believes this is a Christian nation, and he belongs to a Southern Baptist church. He needs a good probing.

"And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I'd like someone to answer the favorite bible verse question with Ezekial 23:20 For she doted upon their paramours, whose flesh is as the flesh of asses, and whose issue is like the issue of horses.

Or at least the one about people not blabbing about their piety in public, Matthew 6:1-6

6:1 Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven.
6:2 Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
6:3 But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth:
6:4 That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.
6:5 And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you,
6:6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

It's not just those quotes, but the entire book of Matthew that needs to be pointed out to the rabid godbots and the pandering politicos. Matthew contains the Sermon On The Mount, the "big preach" in which Cheez-its tells his followers rules for how to live, and one of the three things Cheez-its is most famous for.

And not a single one of the hypo-christians live by those rules.

I LOVE THE BIBLE

MY FAVORITE PASSAGE....

i love the part where the little guy with the sling fights the big guy... then the big guy climbs into the sky... and the little guy trades his holy-cow for some sacred beans... and he plants them... and grows a burning Dubya Bush... and he climbs the holy-bush into the sky... and steals the easter goose from the big guy... and he runs away and climbs down the burning bush... and the big guy follows him but he cuts down the burning bush with his izmel. The giant falls to earth and dies, but three days later he comes back and sees his shadow, so that is why we have extra weeks of winter. The goose lays golden eggs and that is why we eat foil wrapped chocolate eggs at easter. The end. And they all lived happily ever after.

Religion infects life in America like a cancerous tumor. And its not 1645; it's 2008.... very sad.

Come on, everyone knows that in America every candidate, no matter what their personal beliefs, has to jump through the flaming Jesus hoops or they can just forget about it....

Anyway, my favourite Bible verse...

Why it's Ezekiel 25:17 , of course

"The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the iniquities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who in the name of charity and goodwill sheppards the weak through the valley of darkness. For he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers! And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee!"

I hope the answer to Potato Head's question was, "That's nobody's business but my own".

Barack Obama reportedly opens rallies with prayers, and make promises about washing the sins of America away.

My fave:

Thy lips are like a thread of scarlet, and thy speech is comely: thy temples are like a piece of a pomegranate within thy locks.
Thy neck is like the tower of David builded for an armoury, whereon there hang a thousand bucklers, all shields of mighty men.
Thy two breasts are like two young roes that are twins, which feed among the lilies.

This brief article was disrespectful. The 3 Christian candidates do have integrity. I am sad for liberals. They are so misguided. Do liberals really feel that Christianity, or faith in general, are out of fashion? I guess for liberals the concepts of morals, standards, and personal responsibility are just to be laughed at.

I'm glad that there are conservatives and that some of them are Christians. They don't have enough of an influence on policy yet, but their presence and their actions shape the debate on issues that are so important to many families.

I have never posted a comment before, but people like Lyn (#71) make me sick to my stomach. Her racism and intolerance is glaring, and seems to be right in step with these so-called "christians" who believe that white is the "right" skin color; that their religion is the "right" religion; that their bible is the "right" book. Not surprisingly, Lyn misses the point of this entire discussion. It is not a matter of christianity being "out of fashion". It is about the upholding of what is left of our constitution, specifically, the separation of church and state. If Lyn and the other sheep in her flock don't want atheists or non-christians coming into their churches and asking political questions, I suggest that she and the rest of them stop supporting these talking heads who ask religious questions during a political debate.

General _Rennenkaumph,
I just don't believe the constitution was ever meant to remove God from everything
in our Nation. Not to establish a state religion, or have a God test for office,is far
different than his removal from everything American altogether. Jesus was actually just answering a trap question about loyalty to Rome, his answer had nothing to do
with keeping himself out of the laws of the country. You got me on the gravity thing, though !

Jesus also partied and spent time with whores and the unpopular and the equivalents in Jewish society of blacks and gays in ours. Would you let Jesus into your Church?

God commands us to love all !! We can't pick and choose who to love. I have alot of friends at work that may fall into all the categorys you mentioned. I try and live by example , I fall short like anyone. But I can honestly say,I'm Trying , so the answer is yes. The hardest part for me is to show & tell a gay person I love them,
but at the same time not agreeing with their lifestyle, thats tough!

Sam Harris & co. are assholes.

and Huckster is a dunce who should never be President.

Who are you to judge a gay person? They are normal, like everyone else. Remember the words of Jesus? "Judge not lest you be judged for by the standard you judge others, so shall they judge you. By the measure you apply to others, so shall it be applied to you."

I presume you'd show the same exact stringent condemnation to the divorced-remarried lifestyle, too?

You are right, I don't like any sin, especially my own.In Romans 1 26-27 Jesus makes it clear that homosexuality is a sin. I am not saying they aren't "normal", because we all fall short,so we are all abnormal. I am not judging anyone . The difficulty is separating the sin from the sinner. If someone is a habitual shoplifter, and you came to them as a friend and said,he man, don't you think it's wrong to steal. They may get offended , but you are just trying to help.I don't often accept it well at first, but when someone points out my sin, they are usually right, and I can then strive to set a better example. My belief is that homosexuality is a temptation , just like anything else. I could be tempted to have sex with women outside my marraige, but with God's help, I am able to overcome.I'll shut up now, I've probably already created enough troble with my views.

The Bible also treated the mentally unbalanced as being demonically possessed. Common custom was either to stone them to death, or have them run a gauntlet where stones are presumably just barely missing enough to scare the demon out.

Oh yeah, and Jesus should've have written his own gospels. Not only was most of the New Testament not written by his apostles, but by his apostle's successors long after the fact.

Most of the New Testament was written between 200 and 700 CE in the Byzantine Empire.

You can't find the word gun in the constitiution either. The second amendment on specifies generic weapons in a militia.

You also won't find the name Jesus.

ysbaddaden,
I believe God inspired the Bible, no matter what the time periods,so it is all true.I am assuming you don't agree.I am quite sure Jesus didn't want anyone stoned. I agree about specific words in the constitution, we have to try & find the writers intent.

you go lyn !!
I am sorry you are being attacked so.You are just trying to give your opinions. We were created to be in a relationship with God.People living apart from their very purpose for being here, will naturally be in a life of unrest. I’ll bet if you had a friend running toward a cliff, who insisted that the laws of gravity were a crock, you would do everything you could to get him to believe in gravity!! A real hypoctite is someone who can separate their beliefs from their actions.By the way, Can someone show me the term”seperation of Church & State in the constitution. You angry people can start attacking me now!

Jay...where to start?
Speaking ONLY for myself. I'm absolutely SO goddamn sick of you bible thumpin phillistines pushin YOUR fuckin beliefs into EVERY SINGLE ASPECT of my life! If I want to fuckin find YOUR god, I'll go to a motherfuckin church! I swear, can't turn around anymore without runnin into a damn jesus freak trying to shove their religion down my throat.
I think religion should be BANNED in this country, because of fucktards like you tryin to turn this country into a theocracy. Y'all KEEP pushin and pushin...ya might just find out how strongly I believe in keepin YOUR mythology out of politics. RELIGION has NO place in affairs of state.
So please, keep your precious deity TO YOUR FUCKING SELF!

Ah...and this little gem...I'll keep it short. I could care who's gay and who ain't. it Ain't NONE of my damn business. And you just further proved my point that if you need a mythological deity up in the sky, or some book, to be a good person, then there is something FUNDAMENTALLY WRONG with you to begin with. And just because I don't buy into your particular brand of religion, you churchies automatically say I'm goin to hell. It's like someone with Turrets (sp?) Syndrome. Just spittin it out (GONNABURNINHELLSINNERRRRRRR!) without even thinkin.
FUCK ALL YOU CHURCHIES!!!!

Um, dude, Jesus never wrote one word in the Bible. The writings in Romans were the works of Saint-Paulie-come-lately, not Joshua Ben Joseph. Paul was the one who condemned homosexuality, Joshua Ben Joseph never said boo about it. Jesus also said, as I recall, that to make a show of religion is its own reward, something you are doing in your arrogance presuming to help. The Christianity you practice is more pharasaic than Christlike. Out of my Faith, Bibliolator!

The author of this post misspelled the word "atheist."

Sorry you all are so mad at me. I am just a regular person trying to live a good moral life, didn't know that was so offensive or arrogant! I don't go around bragging about how good I am ,just sharing the PEACE I have in my life!!

If you don't then the words "how good I am" never would have come out of your mouth. Jesus, the God-man of my faith forbade such talk. That most so-called "Christians" ignore it is no surprise.

Do you know any Christians that are just regular decent people? Or as soon as you find out they are a Christian, you automatically put them in the catagory of arrogant jerks?

Jay @ 109

No, Jay, I don't know ANY people who call themselves christian, who are regular, decent people. EVERY SINGLE ONE, I've met, including those in my family, are nosey, ignorant, self righteous, holier-than-thou, hypocrites who are CONVINCED that their religion is the best, and anyone who doesn't believe as they do are going to hell.
That being said, I DO however, give everyone the benefit of the doubt. Most sunday xtians, though, prove their ignorance after only a few minutes of speaking.
They speak against abortion, while being in favor of the death penalty, they speak of Jesus, who was peaceful, yet they support the war. They wave the flag, and their crosses, and want the two to merge. They think America is a christian nation, it is NOT.
So Jay, I say unto you, you wanna beleive in a mythological deity, go right ahead, knock thyself out. But DON'T push it on me.

I am sorry to hear that !! We all need to set a better example. I lived a long time without God in my life , and I just want others to enjoy what I've found. I'm not pushing, just inviting others to join in. God doesn't force himself on anyone , if we want to ignore him, he allows that. One thing that God doesn't do is stop pursuing us with his love. I try to follow that example, I just love people the best I can.
