ABC News' Tahman Bradley Reports: Conservative talk radio host Rush Limbaugh issued an on-air apology to Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., today after a caller said her daughter thought the Democratic presidential frontrunner looked like the cartoon character Curious George, a monkey.
Limbaugh, who laughed at the caller's comments, later apologized explaining he didn't know anything about Curious George. Read on...

"So I wish to apologize to both Sen. Obama and Sen. McCain. It was not my intent to bring dishonor and guttural utterances into this campaign. It happened. I laughed about it. It was a 12 year old kid's reaction to Obama, it was told by his mother. I was laughing because I was being polite, but I had never heard of Curious George."
Um, Rush? You might not know about a cartoon character that's been around since 1941, but your listeners do. Some of your callers even use that character to make veiled racist comments about Obama, and your call screeners put them on the air with you. But it was a nice apology coming from the man who aired a satirical "comedy" bit entitled Barack The Magic Negro. It is sad that a former drug addict has learned nothing from his ordeal. He has not become any softer or understanding of the pain other people go through everyday be it form addiction, lack of health care, jobs being lost, wages staying the same while prices go up, etc. And it's funny that Limbaugh flies around the world to shady destinations where he probably gets into a bit of sex tourism and yet he's kissing ass to every right wing Christian nut around.

I'm willing to give Mr. Limbaugh a pass on this one. He admits to being ignorant, and I accept that. Of course, his audience can't make the same claim. When a caller makes a monkey reference to an African American, it's pretty obvious that that caller is a racist. And when Limbaugh's call-screener lets the call go through -- well, I guess it's remotely possible that the call-screener is also ignorant; but it's just as likely that the screener is as racist as the caller and, in fact, as racist as a good chunk of Limbaugh's audience. (If the audience wasn't tolerant of racism, Limbaugh would be broadcasting to thin air.)
Limbaugh and the rest of his sorry ilk want the Democratic candidate to win. They know that Bush has fucked everything up so badly that Jesus H. Christ himself couldn't fix it in four years, which will make a Democrat in the White House a particularly juicy target for their bullshit. Limbaugh is well aware that the Clinton years were the height of his popularity and he wants to be back on top again before his drug-addled lardass keels over from "heart" failure.

No truely "curious" radio host would allow a caller to compare a candidate to something with a particular name and then laugh about it without asking what the heck it is. Try it some time. Mention the name of some obscure television show, movie, etc., and see if the host doesn't ask you what you're talking about.

the first couple of pages were just references to him apologizing/chuckling for "not knowing" who Curious George is/was.
but buried in search results 11-20 I found a list of articles called "Rush's Total Stack of Stuff". these are articles that he reads every day before he goes on the air, and he recommends his loyal viewers/listeners read.
from 9/6/07, Rush's Total Stack of Stuff has a link to a Boston Globe article called "PBS's old-line 'Curious George' resonates with modern preschoolers"

What I found peculiar about this is and I was listening to the show when it went down was that Limbaugh said he "fired" the caller. It's in the transcript on his webpage as well.

In any event apology or not the story is out there just like he wanted and now we get to hear him repeat it over and over and over like the "Barack The Magic Nergro" song so he can brag about what a great guy he is for apologizing.

File this under "kids say the darnest things." Yesterday, my 6 year old asked two 8 year old friends why they didn't live with their mommy and daddy but instead lived with grandparents. The car got very quiet and my 8 year old said, "don't ask that, it makes them sad." My littlest didn't know any better. She just wanted to know. She didn't mean any harm. I have found, that even 12 year olds make observations you really wish they'd keep quiet. "Obama looks like Curious George" is certainly one of them because it's both funny AND something we feel guilty about seeing AND finding funny.
Should Rush have "known better"? Did he "not mean any harm"? Well hardly. We know Rush never "knows better" and we know he means harm. He's Rush. It doesn't negate the fact that the resemblance is there and that the Republicans will use it to smear and insult Obama as "a monkey" as racists have been doing to black people since Jim Crow was a fledgling. That sucks and is wrong. Personally, the resemblance has only positive connotations. I love Curious George the CG movie last year was one of the most delightful children's movies I've seen in an age. I don't think that being associated with optimism and a winning smile is any slander on Obama. I'll be interested to see how he handles it.
It also occurs to me to be amused since the left has called George Bush "Curious George" because he's such an idiot and so feckless, making trouble everywhere he goes and then flashing a "who me?" smile when he's finished making every gaff in the book. its "a ton of links to news stories" that he reads everyday for various talking points on his show. and that he suggests his listeners read. there's a Rush's Total Stack of Stuff for today that probably has crap like Hillary's wins/losses, maybe those burning McMansions, etc.
