Oklahoma State Rep. Goes On Anti-Gay Tirade

Pam's House Blend:

Mother of god, this is horrible. We nominate to the patheon of homo hate Oklahoma State Rep. Sally Kern (sallykern@okhouse.gov). She didn't know that she was being recorded in a meeting, so we get the a nice insight about what she thinks of her gay and lesbian constituents. Perhaps she doesn't think she has any.

About 30 seconds into this homobigoted, fact-free, BS screed, Rep. Kern actually says how she doesn't hate gays (of course not!), then proceeds to continue on her tirade of filth.

I don't think you need to guess which party Kern belongs to. This is a woman who sits on the Education Committee in the OK legislature. She's also a member of Mother Schlafly's Eagle Forum. Read on...

While there's no profanity in this clip, this is some of the most offensive language you'll ever hear.

I think someone should start a blog (not me) that keeps a log of Republican Congressional leaders bigoted remarks. In the past week Rep Steve King has made racial remarks and now this AND that is just one week. Just a place where anyone could see the comments. Over the years I can remember some, such as Trent Lott's statement. What happens is they say this crap and in a few days or weeks it is forgotten.

How does anybody go about their lives carrying around all of that hate and ignorance? Unfortunately, it is out there among us. It is scary that she ever got close to children in the public school system. I've never seen a 2 year old in school. Must be something new. How do you teach 2 year old children to hate homosexuals? I am sick of all the ignorance that is paraded around as truth.

They'll erect a statue in her honor in Oklahoma ... a ribbon-cutting ceremony to unveil it. Then they'll all go home and fire up the gay porn and masturbate. Those, that is, who don't go to the local park restroom to blow a guy for real.

No, not all of them will do that. The rest will just beat their wives and/or kids. Then they'll get up on Sunday and go to church where they will be all smiles and Norman Rockwell ... and Jesus will weep.

Perhaps the most horrific portion comes right at the end when she implicitly connects homosexuality to cancer. One can only hope that, when she least suspects it, she too will catch the gay.

Offensive? Yes. Surprising? No.

This is the same line the bigots have used for 27 years: hit listeners with the one-two punch of recruitment and infection. Reagan and Bush I welcomed these haters with open arms; Clinton enabled them with his capitulations on "Don't Ask/Don't Tell" and DOMA; and Bush II gave them shelter inside the tent of "compassionate" conservatism.

Will this be a year of true change, or will we continue to elect executives and legislators who speak of inclusion in public and tell a very different story behind closed doors?

If she and her ilk believe that this is what the majority of her constituents and the majority of the American public also believes, then why does she only say it when she thinks she is in a closed situation that will not leak out to the press and be reported to the general public? I have never been afraid to shout my convictions to the rooftops, so why doesn't she? Perhaps she realizes that the majority of Americans are not hateful, bigoted, homophobic, xenophobic, antifeminist buffoons that she and her friends are. Hey, honey, if you are so right, let's see you say it at 5:00PM on CNN while you're sitting next to John McCain and GWB. Yeah, I'll bet they'll just LOVE sitting next to your ass while you're spewing that bile. I mean, look how much they love the support and endorsements of Hagee, Robertson, Dobson and the rest - well, at least if they don't make they're support TOO public. Oh, and one other point that may be off topic but has bothered me for a long time about these fucking fundies: if you believe in the literal truth of the Bible, and that the truth of the Bible supercedes any science, and therefore believe that the earth is only between 6-10,000 years old then, pray tell, how long is a lightyear?

AlphaFactor's picture

You know why the Republicans win elections? It's because they rightfully realized that what threatens this country isn't national bankruptcy or the prospect of never-ending war...

what threatens this country is homosexuals that are having abortions!!

"Terrorism or Islam"

That was choice. At least give her a couple of points for recognizing that they are distinctly different, but unfortunately she finds BOTH are a threat to America as she knows it. In all honesty I'm really not shocked at all by her words because she sounds exactly like typical Christian TV. If this is at all upsetting, please, please, spend sometime watching the 24/7 hate of Christian TV. If nothing else, please find time to tune in Mr. Hate Himself.... John Hagee. He really is the ass-pimple on the pumpkin. He hates women, he hates gays, he hates Democrats, he hates the welfare state, he hates minorities, he hates non-Neocons, he hates peace, grrrrrr he especially hates peace, and anything that could lead to peace.

To me this is just typical stuff I hear multiple times a day every single day. If you're at all surprised that she sounds a lot like many of her constituents, then you're pretty ignorant.

This kind of ranting is based on the idea that we as a nation can not seem to puncture. The idea that gays are gays because they choose to be gay. They choose to be discriminated against, they choose to be at risk of beatings and murder just for the attention. I don't understand how people can come to this conclusion but they do. What is not brought into the light enough is that millions of people think that if the government were to treat gays equally GOD would punish everyone. Their GOD is a vindictive homophobic monster that will torture everyone forever if they show some tolerance.

Ace Jackson @ 209:

People please, give it a break.

Well, Mike, those people who are making broad generalizations about Oklahoma and Christians and so forth don't see their statements as broad generalizations or their name-calling, even the grotesquely vulgar stuff, as hateful. They are so completely dazzled by what they view as their own ideological perfection that they can't imagine that they are doing the very thing against which they claim to crusade. Just remember:
Free speech is only for liberals.
The same goes for free thought.
You may only speak out or act on what you believe if it doesn't offend anyone except Christians and conservatives. It's open season on those two groups. It is Good to offend them.
The South is a primitive wilderness of ignorance ---we know this because the enlightened geniuses in the North and on the coasts tell us so and we must believe them because every one of their towns and cities is a paradise of equality and justice.
Science is Perfect and shows us Absolutete Truth. Okay, the Absolute Truth will change as new information comes in, but why quibble over a detail like that? Stop thinking, dammit!
You must toe the liberal line or your compassionate, open-minded, humanistic, liberal neighbors will first ridicule you and then demand that you be fired from your job.
But they aren't judgemental. They don't judge anyone.

Zackery Fischer @ 359:

What is the problem people? I wasn't offended by her remarks. She has every right to express herself and her beliefs as we do. I rather imagine she and those who think the same way as she does are often offended by what we say. If we want tolerance then we have to be tolerant as well - many seem to have forgotten that by the looks of the comments thus far. In fact, some of the comments made here are so inane as to magnify the stereotype most of us hate to see reflected by society.

Giver her the same right to speak her POV as you wish. You can always work to vote Ms. Kern out of office - that's how Americans do it, not spread vicious hate speach at those who do not hink as we do.

Many posters above have expressed similar concerns. However, what I think you forget is that Ms. Kern has a position of leadership, and the ability to influence and make laws that can hurt the very people she hates. She isn't just an ordinary citizen speaking her mind. Heck, the KKK have free speech rights, too. No one is advocating taking those away. But when someone is in a position of leadership, they have a responsibility. She can hate all she wants, but I don't think she should be using her position as a lawmaker to spout hate about a certain segment of her constituents, and ranting about how those constituents need to be oppressed. It's about oppression in this case, not free speech.

steven joseph rotolo's picture

Well... I read a transcript of Ms. Kern's edifying diatribe against homosexuals, and I am astounded at the amount of scientific information contained therein. Who knew that homosexuals have a shorter lifespan than heteros? Somebody should tell that to Elton John and Senator Larry Craig. Also, apparently if a society embraces homosexuality, their moment in the sun will only be a few decades, according to some studies that Ms. Kern has perused in detail. I imagine that ancient Rome, Greece, Assyria, Babylon, the cultures of Canaan, and Hollywood were not included in these studies. And who would've thought that a gay teacher is far more dangerous than a crazed theocrat with a dirty bomb strapped to his chest in the middle of a crowded subway station? I always thought that all men were created equal, but according to Ms. Kern not all lifestyles are equal and certainly not all religions are equal. Which brings me to my next point: Islam. Yes, Islam is a threat to America. Not extremist Islamic terrorists, no sir. Islam itself. So we have homos and muslims, oh my, and we are screwed, no? And lastly, she talks about gay people infiltrating the political landscape. I mean, heterosexual people get elected, but gay people infiltrate. Dear close-minded transparent Sally Kern, I don't blame you for your bigoted views in the face of such collosal misinformation taking space in your brain. After all, I would not blame a person in a coma for wetting the bed, would I?

This is not a Republican Agenda! it is important to note that because those who hate will switch side to whoever has the power. Condi is so filled with hate for the Muslim, that she is unwilling to have meaningful dialogue with "the enemy" as she calls them. I've already weighed in on the Steve King matter. But seriously: Why don't blue states REALLY consider secession? I mean aren't you embarrassed? How can you progress when a half to a third of your country is comprised of village idiots? Seriously, you can't compromise with people who are pig-shit ignorant and bigoted; to attempt it would be akin to finding a middle ground between racism and non-racism, between rational and non-rational. It just can't be done. The point of the matter is that party re-alignments, whereby Republicans obtained support of the South and Mid-West, that occurred during the sixties split over civil rights: the south didn't - and probably still don't - want them, the north kinda did. It's little wonder that given its historic base, Republicans are generally made of poorer embittered whites who have no prospects (or desires) for change. I kind of feel sorry for these sots because I basically believe that ignorance can combated successfully through a secular, well-funded education. But given current sensibilities and priorities, we really don't have the time. So it's either time to shape up - i.e., get out of bible school and visited Barnes & Noble - or ship out.

Dear Jesus, plesae hear my prayer. This is not snark. I say this with the utmost sincerity.

I pray to You to please use my soul as a beacon of truth. If indeed the hateful, American, right-wing republican "Christians" are right ... if they live Your word, please let my soul be the vessel of Truth. I humbly offer for You to strike me dead, cast my soul into Hell, and leave behind Your sacred scroll that the Truth can now be known that they have it right.

However, if they do not have it right, I still offer the same. Strike me dead, oh Lord, and cast my soul into Hell as a sacrifice so that you may then leave behind your sacred scroll that they do not have it right.

I will gladly sacrifice my own life and eternal soul to eradicate this planet of the sickness that is right wing American "Christianity". For the masses to know that my death, and your scrolls are authentic, please place my dead body, along with the scrolls, in a place that would be impossible for me to place myself. Have my dead body appear on the President's desk in the oval office with the scrolls placed inside my body to be found during autopsy.

Wait, check that. Cheney would rush in and burn the scrolls immediately, put a turban on me, and parade me as a terrorist. Try this instead: Have my dead body regurgitated from the mouth of one of American Idol's contestant performances during the grand finale when 98.7 billion people will be watching. Then the scrolls can be regurgitated from Ryan Secrist's mouth and read by a lucid Paula Abdul. People will know that your miracles are at work because Paula will be lucid.

Thank you, oh Lord, for hearing my prayer.

Amen.

But really it's all a show for the Republican base of bigots.

I mean, how many years did they have total control and they couldn't seem to pass a single anti-abortion law, they couldn't change our constitution to exclude gays and they couldn't pass a single bill to keep immigrants out of the country. They couldn't even pass a stinking anti-flag-burning bill because they don't really believe in any of that, they just want to keep the bigots in their base happy and voting for their bullshit.

Aw, it must make one proud to be a Republican.

BINGO!! ... with one minor amendment. I think they do believe in it, and are just as bigoted. However, they refuse to pass legislation because as soon as those hot-button issues go away, they lose the ability to inject those contreversial topics into the national dialog to take peoples' eyes away from the true ills of society--themselves.

Heh. I knew exactly what you meant Dom@61. I was simply trying to point out that RSK, and people like her, are incapable of wrapping their beautiful minds around this concept. They can not comprehend the fact that the stars we see are billions of years old because the light they emanate took that long to get here. That is why, to compensate for their incomprehension, they believe Ceiling Cat put the stars there for amusement and guidance purposes only. This seems to satisfy and put an end to their curiosity, poor souls.

Am I the only one here who finds it a bit ironic that this entry is about raising awareness about the rhetoric of hate, but hateful speech is deleted from the comments? I'm gay, and I'd prefer to know what my enemies are saying about me. I don't need to be protected from anti-gay hate speech, and I don't believe that leaving it in the comments is an endorsement of it (no matter what Bill-ow may say).

This is your site and your rules, and I approve of the banning to ensure this poster and others realize it's not OK to come in and spew bile. But now I'm left wondering what this person could have said, and what's going through my mind is probably far worse (and infinitely more creative) than anything the banned poster could type.

This isn't meant to stir up trouble or to tell you how to do things. But I had overprotective parents who shielded me from violence and obscenity. If, instead of covering my eyes and ears, they had used these occasions as "teachable moments," it might not have been so devastating when I was gay bashed and forced to confront first-hand the evil and awful things people are capable of saying and doing.

She starts out by saying "just like not all religions are equal, not all lifestyles are equal". What country is she from? Doesn't our constitution guarantee equality and she's spitting out crap like this? What makes her a "religous authority" to make such an asinine statement regarding equality. If she wants to talk about lifestyles, well, I believe that hateful lifestyles like hers are below the lifestyle of diversity and she should slink back to her cave.

Funny how all these religious conservative Republicans say that they don't hate gays personally, but are only against gays because the Bible says homosexuality is bad. BUT, then couldn't some Christians say they're anti-religious conservative Republicans because they're going against the teachings of compassion and tolerance? I wonder if anyone has confronted them on this that they're actually not Christian at all. Maybe they're getting their ideas from Satan?

How does anybody go about their lives carrying around all of that hate and ignorance? Unfortunately, it is out there among us. It is scary that she ever got close to children in the public school system. I've never seen a 2 year old in school. Must be something new. How do you teach 2 year old children to hate homosexuals? I am sick of all the ignorance that is paraded around as truth.

The worst thing is what it does to those who listen to them. I am a VERY angry gay person. I don't like that fact. I have lived here in Jesse Helms country half of my life, and I now hate Evangelicals and Republicans for what they believe and how they behave. It has colored my relationship with my family, and that makes me even angrier. I have not always been a hater, and It is very depressing.

There is a film out called, I believe, Prop 9. It is a documentary about how a western state attempted to pass legislation that not only would disenfranchised gays by negating all civil rights legislation on the books, but also prevent gays from ever passing laws to protect them in the future. If that isn't akin to the Nazis, I don't know what is.

beckyboo's picture

My 17 year old daughter is not gay and is a member of the Gay/Straight Alliance at her high school.

Our family is Catholic, and we have seven kids and a few that we have helped to raise, or given shelter to, over the years. My husband and I go to church every Sunday, (which, admittedly, is not necessarily any indication of a persons "goodness") We have gay friends and relatives. Not only have we not been "hurt by the Gay Agenda", we have been enriched by it. (If there were such a thing.)

I look at people like Mrs. Kern with pity and disgust. It's a pity that they don't hear the part of Jesus' message that says to "love your neighbor". Their lives would be so much more full of love, and they would have far less fear.

I'm disgusted that people like Kern don't have the courage or intellectual curiosity to reach out to their community, even though they seek power and position in the community.

When are we going to start looking at these bigots and calling them what they are,(universal WE), which is low minded cretins. Do their views matter? Yes, because they do have a following. Are their views worth listening too? Sure, knowing your enemy is always important. Are their views progressive or regressive? This speaks for its self. If they don't want to progess, then why are we giving them the opportunity (again, universal WE) to play a part in the machinery that governs?

For me, I think it is important to ask these questions loudly, and proudly, every opportunity we get. Framing is everything in politics, and there ARE enough smart people out there to sway the pendulum back, from the brink of regression, if more of these "private" meetings are given daylight, and there is a chance for the public to hear the right questions being asked.

It's not about right and left, liberal and conservative. It's about where do we want our country to be at the world table, and what do we want for our local communities. Do we want to move forward, or backward. It's time to stop treating opinions as if they were good public policy, and to start making good public policy based on our national agreement of governance...The Constitution.

(just my rant for the day...thanks...that feels better.)

I am not a right winger by any means but what happened to the first amendment? I have read the bible and it does say in more than one spot that homosexuality is a sin. It says it in both testaments.

If there are people who want to believe that and say so, why can't they? This is the problem with this country, people say they want their constitutional rights but that doesn't seem to include everyone.

Why if something is declared a sin in the sight of God is it hate speech?

The left wingers are as bad as the Bushies at wanting to take away peoples constitutional liberties. Homosexuals need to recognize their hypocrisy when it comes to freedom.

I wonder at times what kind of church service people like this go to. Is it simply an hour long harangue of "God hates fags"? Is that all the preacher talks about? Does the whole congregation chant "God hates fags" for the duration of the service?

The talk about "God's law" is hilarious. It seems that people of this ilk don't realise the Bible has a LOT OF PAGES in it, and 99 percent of it doesn't deal with homosexuality.

She should be talking about health care, the war, and the lame ass economy, but then, she is a Republican and a Bush supporter.
