"The Purpose of War is Peace"
So sayeth Mitch McConnell. A little Orwell, anyone?
CBS:
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Minority Leader John Boehner, Senate majority leader Harry Reid and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell all did their best to put political differences aside to focus on the members of the military serving all over the world. The sharp words normally slung about a failed war in Iraq were avoided.
Reid urged members of the audience to not forget the men and women serving in Afghanistan saying they are in out hearts and in our prayers. McConnell acknowledged that the past five years have not been easy, but urged the audience to remember that "the purpose of war is peace." Pelosi spoke of creating a peaceful future worthy of members of the military and their sacrifice.
Speaking of McConnell, taxpayers want to know: Is Elaine Chao campaigning for her husband on the clock?

Mitch doesn't have a very good poker face.
The purpose of war has little to do with peace, but with the immediate objective of destroying the enemy. This non-sense of "war is peace" is Orwellian.
Peace is a by-product of when the destroyed enemy, gives up, and no longer has a means to oppose continued warfare. If the enemy contniues to resist, that is not peace, but a stalemate: The Middle East, Iraq, and Afghanistan. A stalemate is not peace.
It is reklcess for anyone to assert, "War is peace". It is deadly, shoking, gruesome, and hideos. Do not be lulled by this claptrap. It is destructive, consumes vast resources, and substantially imposes on the poor hardships: Loss of funds for social care, large debts.
And what is Sen McConnell's personal exposure to military training and doctrine?
Peace, as an outcome, is not achieved only through warfare. Peace can be achieved through diplomacy and non-combat options.
War is as war does.
He's Client 10.
Sounds to me like he and Pelosi are both windsucking assclowns. War is peace. Ya, and up is down. Black is white. Day is night. And it IS NOT A WAR! Stop calling it a damn war, you moronic corporate hacks.
“the purpose of war is peace.”
That's the excuse for every war since the beginning of civilization. Hitler spoke frequently about securing peace and that war was the unfortunate but necessary means to do it.
The purpose of war is peace and the purpose of false flag terrorism is ____ ?
Orangutan. @ 9:
... war therefore terrorism is peace. Killing is saving lives. Making war is making love. The sky is yellow and the sun is blue.
Walter @ 6:
I don't think so, I look at that pic, and my pedodar goes nuts...
Therefore peace is war. ......Hmmm. Peace is a Lovemaking. Love is a Peacemaking. Simple.
We have always been at war with Oceania.
A couple of points. McConnell's statement certainly personifies what Orwell's novel 1984 was about. Also, Pelosi seems to believe that peace in the future should be sought so that the deaths of American soldiers have not been in vain while Nicole Belle talks about the sacrifice of the troops. Perhaps Ms. Pelosi and Ms. Belle should be made aware that these sacrifices are not being made on the shores and the land of this country but are being made, in vain, in a country that was illegally invaded by the United States and by two countries, Iraq and Afghanistan, that never threatened anyone in these United States. Having more American soldiers die for a lie is not going to justify the deaths of American troops, either in the past, present or in the future. The best and only way to support and to give comfort to American service personnel is to get them the hell out of Iraq and Afghanistan as quickly and as rapidly as possible. Otherwise, more American soldiers and marines will continue to needlessly fill up hospital beds at Walter Reed and VA facilities across this country for absolutely no justifiable reason whatsoever.
Bring them home-alive and in one piece-NOW.
I called Pelosi to 1) thank her for house FISA bill with no telecom immunity and 2) ask her why no Democratic reps are at Winter Soldier in MD. (Listening live I learned that John Kerry sent his regrets - too busy, no takers for today's event. The testimony is stunning. McConnell would disagree. It is carried all weekend - KPFA.org or WarComesHome (com or org).
David Hawes @ 12:
BTW I thought up that slogan/phrase back in 1971 when I was 19. My then girlfriend made it into a beautiful banner for her senior highschool art class. She got an 'A'.
Great. If the surge is working, we won, we can come home, right? Right?
Wrong. The purpose of war is to open up new business opportunities for Bush's and Cheney's friends. 9/11 was the missing piece of the business plan they were waiting for.
The purpose of war is peace
The purpose of freedom is slavery
The purpose of ignorance is strength
Sorry, Mr. McConnell, but the purpose of war is to kill those you want to smash instead of working out conflicts through diplomacy and mutual understanding. For God's sake, don't pretend the invasion and war in Iraq were intended for peace. It was a blatantly illegal unilateral attack on a sovereign country that had done nothing to America and was about as much a threat to America as Indonesia. But it DID have oil that the US wanted to secure for itself -- we know that.
Nobody buys your garbage. We know why the Bush administration invaded Iraq, and peace was the last thing it wanted.
Yabba Dabba @ 13:
Iraq is not part of Oceania, but America has wanted the oil supply of middle east (and thus promotes chaos) for decades.
Jebus, Mitch -- you could say the same thing about drive-by shootings.
After rereading the above post, I must issue a mea culpa to Nicole Belle, as the words that I attributed to her were instead apparently said by Nancy Pelosi. An example of why one should read more carefully before one puts one's thoughts on the internet.
What's so surprising about this? The point of the war is to curb a threat. However ill conceived this war is, the idea behind winning it is to bring peace to Iraq and end the terrorist threat there. There are diplomatic processes going on but terrorist groups cannot be talked to hence the war.
Erroll @ 23:
Forgiven
Todd @ 24:
poor Todd. Best leave now before a house falls on You.
I often think that these people are laughing behind everyone's back at their cleverness. They can not possibly follow the script of 1984 so closely without it being intentional. Either that, or they really really believe the American public is dumb as a stump.
Come join the army and learn the noises
That drown out the others' voices and please the devil
Who rejoices when mankind has no choices
And power exploits us, and peace avoids us
Todd @ 24:
...." and this is Todd reporting for Faux News, back to you BillO"
"The purpose of war is peace." Yeah, right. And the purpose of danger is safety. And the purpose of lying is truth. And the purpose of acting stupid is being smart.
Who's the chinless turtle?
The purpose of respecting unborn life is so that we can give it the honor of our killing it later.
What's the purpose of peace?
chuck h @ 27:
The American public IS dumb as a stump. That's why these people get elected.
Okay lets take an inventory. Lets see. War is Peace. Blacks hate the Whites. Obamanians hate Hillaryonians. Christians hate Muslims. Straights Hate Gays. Republicans hate Democrats. Neocons hate Freedom. Mexico hates America. . . on and on.
Not a pretty scenario.
Is it me? Or does McConnell really look like he's some poorly done art project using a peeled potato?
Todd @ 24:
Jebus, Todd, how wrong can one person be in such a small space? Read Clausewitz, please. Contained within that text would be some variation of this line:
"War is merely a continuation of politics," ("Der Krieg ist eine bloße Fortsetzung der Politik mit anderen Mitteln").
And who are these terrorists you're talking about? Are they backed by the Iranian government? Are they attacking the US? What, exactly, is the United States' casus belli?
what a load of tripe! shame on you grandma McConnell!!!
here's a slice of Wendell Berry's essay The Failure of War -
If you know even as little history as I do, it is hard not to doubt the efficacy of modern war as a solution to any problem except that of retribution—the “justice” of exchanging one damage for another.
read it here

David Hawes @ 26:
I warned ya,pal.
Dump him and all those like him!!
Stop voting for these dirty evil stupid son of a bitches!
♣Bangkok Bob♣ @ 36:
lol -- Mr. Potato Head is watching.
Todd @ 24:
We won the war. What we have now is an occupation. Big oil wants contracts that give them control of Iraq"s oil reserves. The offers that have been refused by the Iraqis are one sided and only benefit the oil companies. They leave nothing for the citizens of Iraq.
Ron @ 45:
Ron,Ron,Ron.(sigh) don't explain it so simply to the poor guy. It might hurt His head.
Andy K Jong Il @ 37:
Your first point is an opinion, no one really knows Bush's intentions behind the war whether political or genuinely stupid. As for the terrorists Al Qaeda is NOW in Iraq, they were not at the start of the war. We are attempting to curb the threat of Al Qaeda and insurgents both of which are attacking Iraqi civilians and our troops. Regardless of how ill conceived the war was and how we never should have went there in the first place we must address the issue now. The purpose of finishing the war now whether political or not is to bring peace to this area.
David Hawes @ 46:
Somebody has to do it. I hope he doesn't get a migraine or maybe I don't.
"A little Orwell, anyone?"
The idea that the goal of war is to achieve peace should hardly be pinned on Orwell. At the very least, it goes back to Augustine, who claimed that the purpose of all war was to achieve peace. Its been a cornerstone of western theories about warfare for over 1500 years. As ridiculous as I find the talking points of various war supporters, slamming McConnell for reiterating this canonical mantra and then pinning it on Orwell seems an unfair critique.
David Hawes @ 46:
I would love to see you provide some factual evidence behind that claim. The 'war' as it's called is an occupation at this point I agree but we have a situation there now that we can't just withdraw from. I wasn't defending the war, I think it was arguable the worst blunder in the history of the US. I was just commenting on the original comment of the purpose of war being peace and maybe that may be a veil to cover up the oil contracts but that seems all too good to be true.
Have a drinkRon @ 48:
Have a drink and remain calm. He'll leave soon.
Suit up and go then you bastard.
*
Todd @ 50:
You don't read much,do ya bub? The violence in Iraq is sectarian.
Very soon these raunchy Reslug. bastards will be GONE.
Todd @ 50:
There have been countless articles about how the oil contracts aren't being signed. The main reason for the surge was for the Iraqis to work out these issues.
There will never be enduring peace unless and until human beings come to accept a philosophy of life more adequate to the cosmic and psychological facts than the insane idolatries of nationalism and the advertising man's apocalyptic faith in Progress towards a mechanized New Jerusalem.
-- Aldous Huxley
You don't read much,do ya bub? The violence in Iraq is sectarian.
Al Qaeda is related to the Suuni/Shiate conflict? I don't think so.
Mr. Potato-Head, refuses to answer any question on how he evaded the draft! Seems like he had medical problems a la Neal Boortz! However Boortz was found out to have lied for over 38 years to everyone from A-Z! Boortz was proven to have actually lied about his deferments, who knows maybe that shoe is fixing to drop on Mr. Potato-Head!
Newspeak; it's official now. War is peace; greed is charity; hate is love.
And Todd, it seems rather strange to Me with all our 'military intelligence' ( an oxymoron) and 'the greatest military in the world' We can't stop a buch of 'towelheads' from blowing each other up. Where do these 'suicide bombers'come from and how do they get into Iraq and have the munitions to accomplish the task? Answer Me that.
This coming from a bunch who have enabled the War the entire time.
I couldn't help but notice how zombie-like people appear once they've completely lost their soul.
Peace is not accomplished through war.
Philosophical submission is accomplished by war.

Todd @ 57:
You don't read much,do ya bub? The violence in Iraq is sectarian.
Al Qaeda is related to the Suuni/Shiate conflict? I don't think so.
Right. So what is your point? I'm trying hard here to understand how war is peace.
The purpose of war is gain, either monetary or territorial. Quit BS-ing us, Mitch. We ain't dumb like your dumbia.
David Hawes @ 60:
The reason the army is unable to stop these attacks is being they are fighting street warfare, I recall a few weeks ago a story about Al Qaeda strapping bombs to women with was it down-syndrome? or some other mental disorder. This is a very different kind of war than our troops are used to, it's not as easy as shooting everyone they see. I can only speculate as to where the bombers come from and where they are getting the munitions. Al Qaeda is getting them from other countries, the border isn't exactly secure. If you're referring to the sunni/shiate bombers I couldn't tell ya, most likely from Al Qaeda and other terrorist groups but thats really a question for the military to answer (or perhaps a google search).
Look up the word hypocrite in the dictionary there's a picture of this fucker.
The purpose of war is peace? Well I think I see the fucking humongous gaping flaw in your plan, idiot-face.
The purpose of war is peace?????
I thought the purpoes of war was to make MONEY plain and simple, well maybe not plain and simple.
Ask blackwater, kbr, haliburton etc.......
Todd @ 68:
They blame almost all of the violence on al quaeda. You are spreading the propaganda that they have fed you.
Todd @ 24:
All the "terrorists" are people defending their homes and the opposing the rape of their women and land.
Terror is almost unilaterally a imperial decision.
C&L I have had problems with your comments page all day. Are the NSA monitoring you again today?

Joshua Birk @ 49:
Except, in the book, the Peace Ministry was the War Ministry. And 'War is Peace' is a slogan in the book.
ConcernedHusseinCanuck @ 75:
I don't think so. Sometimes it works just fine.
Todd @ 68:
PENTAGON STUDY SHOWS NO LINK BETWEEN HUSSEIN GOVERNMENT AND AL QAEDA
Where in the hell have you been for the last week ? LGF? Red State? Karl Rove's colon?
And, if you don't recall, AQ links to Saddam was reason was in the top 5 or so reasons(probably #2, but that is my opinion), with soon to be disproven WMDs chiming in more loudly.
Or did Colin Powell make the one word speech- "Peace."- when making the case in the UN for sanctioning this completely useless and wasteful war? 'Cause I swear he talked about the proof of active nuke and chemical weapons programs?
So .. obviously ..
MORE WARS = MORE PEACE
Since the Huxley quote got no traction, let me try another: Fighting For War Is Like Fucking For Virginity.

Interesting, you may be on to something.
I guess, and follow me on this, that freedom must be slavery!
Poor Orwell, he was off by just a couple decades.
Todd @ 68:
Yeah, it could not possibly be that people hate it when a foreign power invade their country, bombs the to smitheries, and tries to hijack their national wealth. It must be them furreigners pulling into a shithole and strapping bombs onto mentally handicapped people.
Yeah, that makes much more sense!
I swear the collective IQ of this country took a fucking nosedive somewhere after the 70s.

mitch mcconnell will be re-elected back to washington this year, not because of anything mitch has done, but because the DLC has once again ruined a surefire democratic victory by backing the wrong horse and the kentucky jellyfishERRRRRdemocratic party enabled them to do it. the DNCC handpicked multi-time loser and DINO bruce lundsford to run and the new democratic governor non-endorced endorced him, completely ignoring the grassroots efforts of lt. col. andrew horne, usmc (ret). the reason the DNCC picked lundsford? he can self-finance, so that the national committee doesn't have to spend a dime here. it doesn't matter that lundsford can trigger the millionare clause and blanket the entire state with more sleazy attack ads from his massive warchest. the DNCC doesn't care enough about the country to take out mcconnell when he was at his most vulnerable in his political career. he was so scared of andrew horne that he started running political ads the week after election day in 2007 (kentucky has gubenatorial elections the year before presidential elections). i haven't seen an ad since horne was forced out from a lack of support a month ago.
why is it the DLC's fault? the DNCC is headed by chuck shumer, who also happens to be a supporter of clinton who is a member of the DLC. i think shumer is as well. the DLC can go fuck off as far as i'm concerned because they are ruining real change locally and nationwide.
You know, one look at Mitch McComical's face and if you can do it without puking, you know he delighted in pulling the wings off flies, humminbirds, and other small critters and was only a stone's throw away from bein another Jeffrey Dahmer. Rumor has it that he's going to be vulnable in Kentuck when next he runs for relection. There are web sites devoted to his ouster. I can't wait, but I guess I must.
Anyone out there from Kentucky? What's the chance this pasty-faced, american-hating neoclown sack-of-refuse could be sent packing in November? How I would love to see this turd go down!

Walter @ 6:
Look at this guy. He probably has to frequent prostitutes because he's such a freak.
Krackonis @ 76:
MCConnel said, “the purpose of war is peace.” He is referencing a long established philosophical tradition of just war. I
"It is therefore with the desire for peace that wars are waged, even by those who take pleasure in exercising their warlike nature in command and battle. And hence it is obvious that peace is the end sought for by war. For every man seeks peace by waging war, but no man seeks war by making peace. "
St. Augustine
City of God 19:12
If the statement is Orwellian, it is because Orwell pokes fun of this long established tradition. And, quite frankly, there is a good argument to be made that all wars are fought to attain peace. Their are so many better things for us to focus our anger own from this war and its enablers, the parroting of centuries old rhetoric shouldn't bother us in the least.
Joshua Birk @ 103:
WHAT fricken war are you all talking about?
Before injecting the genius of Orwell into this conversation, let me remind you that there is no war going on right now. The Shrub declared, years ago, that hostilities were ended, and that the mission was accomplished.
There is no war.
Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (Filthy-R) would have gained more credibility saying, "The purpose killing one million people is control of oil prices."
Todd @ 47:

the purpose of war is obscene profits, unchecked corruption, and total power and suppression of any domestic dissent.
I have to go listen to music , my only escape .
What does the white man know about peace? The white man is the scourge of this earth. Violence is the only thing the white man knows and understands. It's been that way for centuries. Invade a country and rape their people and their land for their own greed and egos.
Yea, I'm white but ashamed of my race. Especially these old pasty white guys and those stupid neo-cons, who send younger guys on suicide missions to feed their own egos.
Bombing a country into democracy or back to the stone age does not promote peace. It promotes anger that will last for generations.
The only peace the white man knows is "peace of mind" knowing that they got what they wanted at the expense of innocent people who get in the way.
Chip @ 108:
No Chip ,
it is not the white man who is at fault , it is greed , which knows no color , my brother ! .
and futher more , think of this contries biggest faults
1) how we as invaders , reacted to those who lived for thousands of years before us , even if some of them where white as in the case of the " Kennewick (spelling ? ) Man ".
2) We ( as in white ) amercians allowed and even bought black slaves , who where caught and sold by black profiteers , which had been going on for thousands of years before hand .
Where would we be now as a country had we loved our red and black brothers and sisters , and brown and yellow , and tan , would we have these discussions today or would we be the greatest country the world as ever known .
oh and that face , I wear a size 13 ring , one punch , just a jab , another pasty face , the one I hate the most is revoling bolton , I'm 60 yrs old , one round my lottery ticket against all his money . One round please .

I've actually met the man. Anyone care to guess how firm his handshake was? I live in Kentucky and he's pretty solid here but stranger things have happened.
I think Bush said something like that in 2004, meaning 1984 was in 2004, and 1998 is still another 10 years away! Praise "BOB"!

I would put $5000 on the table , in a handshake he would be on his knees in 3 seconds or less .
Walter @ 6:
But not of an attractive young female. He is a republican after all.....
Also, “the purpose of war is peace.” Yea, sure, just like fucking is for virginity....
Call me silly, but I always thought that PEACE came from NEGOTIATIONS! TERROR comes from war, and war is TERRORISM! Man, I thought that our leaders were better than this; the dollar is the equivalent of confetti, the world LOATHES us, and we are making enemies with our friends to the north and south! Oh, the burning pillars of Rome.
Mitch McConnell is opposed by either A shill named Fisher or Lundgren. They are not seriously capaigning, will not talk about any of the issues. This country is Fucked.
George Orwell, the greatest mind (outside of science) of the 20th century IMHO.
From politics to the military to corporations, his warnings are in constant need of heeding.
We can never let him be shoved up the Memory Hole...
What kind of newspeak is this.
War is to kill.
People like Todd live in their own little dream worlds.
The 'threats' that were removed where groups those doing the 'removal' once worked with and supported.
Partners in crime.
This is not some kind of good-guy/bad-guy situation.
I'd rather compare it to a mafia organization. Each is working for their own good. If that means working with the scum of the world, fine. They commit massacres, you look the other way.
When that person is no longer useful, you make him disappear.
Saddam and the Bushies were old buddies. The invasion of Iran, gassing of the Kurds, torturing, murdering and oppressing the people of Iraq or the invasion of Kuwait was not a problem! (Bush sr. first stated that the invasion of Iraq was a matter for 'local' governments to resolve).
But then the US saw that they could use the situation to A) oust Saddam (major oil supplier) and gain control of the oil and B) get forces stationed in Saudi Arabia (no. 1 oil supplier).
So Saddam had to go, but the UN would not play with.
Not that the fake testimonial of a child that was 'witness to the atrocities committed by the Iraqi forces in Kuwait' and turned out to be a US-friendly Kuwaiti government official's daughter that was no where near the supposed incidents.
(Sound familiar?)
That is when the Sanctions occurred and the US wanted the Iraqis to rise up and poured money into the op.
They did, but the wrong ones. The US had a choice of supporting the rebellion that will probably not bow down to the US or good old Saddam.
They chose the latter and let the rebellion be crushed by Saddam.
So in retrospect the US supported Saddam when he invaded iran murdering millions, oppressing his own people which cost an unknown amount of death and suffering, gassing of the kurds with tens of thousands dead and suffering, invasion of Kuwait with thousands dead, Operation Desert Camel-Turds that again cost thousands of lives, the sanctions, which among numerous things thanks to murky definition of Sanctions disallowed aluminum tubes that could rebuild the water plants that were in blatant disregard to the GC destroyed by Allied forces, cost thousands of lives and finally the 'Liberation', again costing thousands of lives.
Saddam was a SOB, but there is nothing more disgusting and lower then those that will flip-flop depending on which way the wind blows.
And that would be us.
We support them, we fight them and all the long we do not care who suffers.
As long as it is not a Bushie.
And this is just one of many such scenarios.
Wanna talk about the Taliban or Osama & the Gang?
Remember also the type of people we are talking about here.
People who claim to be the most upright and honest people fighting against all evil, yet are getting caught tapping in toilets and being old buddies with those they now claim to be evil.
With all this talk of 'Support the Troops'.
Who cared about the Iraqi troops?
Did we not send our beloved troops over to kill Iraqi's troops based on lies?
The ones defending their own homes?
Even if Bush turned into Saddam mk2 and some outside force invaded, would not everyone be willing to defend their homes?
What if we were the example of democracy and whatnot (wild idea, huh?) and say China came up with some cock&bull story and invaded and annihilated all defenses and occupied the country.
The Chinese are then justified (in our twisted logic) in what they did and their troops get a hero's welcome.
The victims will not. (That would be us.)
In the example the Chinese would be the 'bad guys'.
At lease that is what the Germans were considered when they invaded countries like Poland.
They overran them and established their own pseudo-government.
Our rose colored glassed do not let us see that in fact *we* are the bad guys.
When we sent in the troops based on lies, we turned them into mercenaries and murderers.
Lie to yourself all you want, but that is the truth.
And we should be pitting the victims and not the wrongdoers.
And just like in court, the only way to make sure that the real criminal gets punished is for the person that directed the wrongdoers are brought to justice.
Just like 'staying the course' is the same crap each propaganda minister would shout.
You think the Russians heard that when they invaded Afghanistan or Chechnya?
Oh how unpatriotic of those that said the invasions were wrong and crimes. They wanted to spit on the graves of the brave soldiers that sacrificed themselves to protect Mother Russia.
People, wake up!
If anyone else would do this crap we would be freaking out!
Fighting for peace is like fucking for virginity.
