SNL's Weekend Update team of Amy Poehler and Seth Meyers take jabs at Elliot Spitzer and Mitt Romney while alumnus Tracy Morgan comes back to respond to Tina Fey's promotion of Hillary Clinton three weeks ago with his own defense of Barack Obama.

Transcript of Morgan below the fold:

MORGAN: Why is it that every time a black man in this country gets too good at something, there’s always someone come around and remind us that he’s black? First Tiger, then Donavan McNabb then me. Now Barack. I got a theory about that. It’s a little complicated but basically, it goes like this: we are a racist country. The end. It’s not the people in this room, but if we’re not a racist country, how did Hillary Clinton convince everybody in Texas and Ohio that Barack didn’t know how to answer the phone at 3 in the morning? Let me tell you something, Barack knows how to answer that phone. He’s not going to answer it like, (soft, frightened voice) “Hello, I’m scared. What’s going on?” He is gonna answer it like I would get a phone call at 3 in the morning: “Yeah, who’s this? This better be good or I’m going to come down there and put somebody in a wheelchair.”

Some things never change, Seth. People saying he’s not a fighter. Let me tell you something. He’s a gangsta, he’s from Chicago. Barack is not winning because he’s a black man. If that was the case, I would be winning. And I’m way blacker than him. I used to smoke Newports and drink Olde English. I grew up on government cheese, I prefer it. Now there’s all this stuff and all this talk about the pastor. Barack has to stay away from the pastor, ‘cause he’s too black. But just because he knows the dude doesn’t think…doesn’t mean that he’s gonna think like him. Look, I have a friend who goes to strip clubs, that doesn’t mean that I am gonna go to the strip club.

MEYERS: But you do go to strip clubs.

MORGAN: Yeah, but I go for the girls, not because my friend is going. I have integrity. Barack is qualified. Personally, I want to know what qualifies Hillary Clinton to be the next president. Is it because she was married to the president? If that were the case then Robin Givens would be the heavyweight champion of the world. If Hillary’s last name wasn’t Clinton, she’d be some crazy white lady with too much money and not enough lovin’. That’s where I come in. I know women like that, you do not want them on the phone at 3 in the morning. In conclusion, three weeks ago, my girl Tina Fey went on the show, she declared that “bitch is the new black”. You know I love you, Tina. You know you’re my girl. But I have something to say. Bitch may be the new black, but black is the new president, bitch.

This is what Obama’s response to the questions about his crazy pastor should be…

Jeremiah Wright and a whole lot of other old angry black civil rights leaders and preachers grew up in a brutal and segregated America. Lynchings and hangings and beating were common in the south. They had to bear repeated insult and injury and an unfair shake from the law and society at large.

The bitterness and anger of a lot of these men, has unfortunately not changed with the times. And it is a large part of the reason why they make boneheaded comments today. It is tragic, because America has grown a lot and their anger prevents them from seeing it as such. So it is important to categorically denounce their divisive and hateful language. While racism still exists, America has made great bounds in fairness towards women and minorities and most people are ready to judge others on the content of their character, not the color of the skin, or gender.

The legacy of the oppression still exists in the infrastructure of our society, in poor schools and neighborhoods etc and should be addressed. but for the most part, anyone, black, white, woman, Hispanic, native American who tries hard enough can make the American dream for themselves.

It's the economy!

Give the commissions, the big bonuses and the big salaries back and then let's talk about another government bailout. It's just too easy to bailout Wall Street without debate. Look at the debates in Congress when the GOP argues over a few bucks here and there but nowhere do I see them arguing a bailout of *their* damned problem. They own this rotting mess so every Democrat needs to pin it on the GOP every waking minute of the day. This goes well beyond Bush. It's the entire GOP.
"We're in the most serious economic problem we've been in in a very long time, much worse than 2001. The president's hands-off attitude is reminiscent of Herbert Hoover in 1929, in 1930," said Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y. "There are lots of things that can be done, particularly on housing. Housing has been the bull's eye of this crisis."

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said, "Much of what the administration has done has been too late."

I didn't think so. Fey labeled herself a derogatory name: bitch (and proud of it, I might add).

“Bitch may be the new black, but black is the new president, bitch…" Justifiably said...invited, as a matter of fact.

For Morgan to stoop to Fey's level, he'd have said something like "[the N word] is the new black."

I was offended by Fey's stupid comments; I clapped when Morgan said what he said (and it was obvious he has deep affection for Fey).

Way more relevant and on-topic than Tina Fey's thing, I thought. Just way too late.

Also, Tina Fey's was just a few arguments embellished with metaphors; Tracy Morgan's was a collection of succinct points and counterpoints. To the average viewer, Fey's might have been more convincing, but to somebody closely following the campaign, Morgan's was a lot more truthful.

I haven't watch SNL for a long time, and I was kind of surprise that its not as edgy as the old days. I think Seth was only funny in the "oh really" sketch, but his opening is not up to par with the edgier days of SNL. I think Tracy was the best part, and great point and counter point. I love it when comedy and truth are side by side.

Seth, Really? Nazi did this to the Eskimo on home schooling, really? An Asian guy afraid to leave the house, really?
It sounded more like the half hour news show skit. Are the writer still on strike? really?
Well Seth was funny in the Really skit, so he is capable of being funny. But his opening humor was not even a heckle.

Clinton campaign calls foul
http://weblogs.chicagotribune.com/news/politics/blog/2008/03/clinton_cam...
Senator Hillary Clinton's camp just held a conference call with reporters, pouncing on a story in today's Chicago Tribune – "Obama prepares for full assault on Clinton" by John McCormick – saying the piece painted a blueprint of how Obama plans to attack Clinton's character and ethics.

That's not exactly what the story says.

Instead, the article lays out Team Obama's plans to hit Clinton "over ethics and transparency," i.e., Clinton not yet releasing her tax returns, the donor list to the Clinton library and Congressional earmarks. However, that discrepancy didn't stop Howard Wolfson, Clinton's communications director, and Mark Penn, Clinton's chief strategist, from taking the opportunity to blast their perception of Obama's approach.

Meat's picture

On a pseudo-related note, I love Seth Meyers' ability to destroy any half-decent joke with his sloppy, rambling delivery. Not that Poehler is all that much better, of course. But then, perhaps I've just been spoiled by correspondents on The Daily Show like Jon Oliver, Rob Riggle, Jason Jones, ad infinitum.

It would be nice if people can stop demonizing Hillary Clinton so they feel better about their choice to support Obama. They're both good--and yes, flawed, as human beings tend to be--candidates. And the supposed 'barbs' they have been flinging at each other are not nearly as catastrophic as pundits would have you believe. This is child's play, what they're putting each other through. News outlets are doing most of the spinning themselves, though ultimately Obama's camp or Clinton's camp will be blamed for how this-or-that is interpreted. It's absurd. After watching Olbermann's 'The fate of the world hangs on your shoulders, Hillary Clinton!' op-ed piece, I can't help but chuckle when I think about how so many Americans hyperventilate the minute any 'shocking' news hits the airwaves. Obama wore a turban at some point for some event! Someone working for Hillary Clinton is retarded, and she resigned! SCANDAL! They must hate each other so much!

Sure. No projecting here, eh, guys?

Regarding Spitzer here's a piece from Greg Palast, just a great informative short read about Bush, predatory lending, bank collapse, lots of our tax dollars, and Spitzer's arrest:

Eliot’s Mess

Bear Stearns affair is outrageous (no outrage voiced by the U Sheeple of America, nor the Dems KongreSS..), but it's quite a stretch to whore-iffic Spitzer, a creepy jerk by many counts, a terrible, ineffective, argumentative, arrogant/ignorant disappointment to ALL of us who voted him into office in NYS/NYC.

Once in this level of OFFICE, there is nothing private really - taxpayers pay for all (such as his travel out of NYS each time he had these whore-ibble encounters), thus should be in the know. We have the HIGHEST TAXES in the nation, combined - it's a crime to use them for hookers. Like it or not, it IS a crime.

He has NOT achieved ANYTHING in his 1.5 years in the gov office - now we know why: was too busy with the hos and his dick ..He should have ample time now to continue his hobby.

Patriot ACT in action - Spitzer follies would not be known most probably had it not been for the Patriot Act DEMS helped into being !!

... Whore-ibble Spitzer was LAUNDERING money in many ways, for MANY years .. it IS a CRIME.

1. U.S. Is Examining Spitzer’s Funds

ALBANY — Federal prosecutors are investigating whether Gov. Eliot Spitzer used campaign funds in connection with his meetings with prostitutes, including payments for hotels or ground transportation, three people with knowledge of the investigation said.

Prosecutors have asked the governor’s lawyers about the travel arrangements for three trips, including his Feb. 13 rendezvous with a prostitute at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington. The United States attorney’s office in Manhattan has also asked about the governor’s use of car services during trips to Washington."'
cont ..

2. Investigators Seek Records of Spitzer Campaign’s Payments to a Consultant

....One person said the authorities had requested detailed documentation for thousands of dollars in reimbursements to the consultant, Kristian B. Stiles, who has worked on Mr. Spitzer’s campaigns since 2003 and directs national fund-raising.
Another person with knowledge of the investigation said the authorities were particularly interested in hotel room charges during trips Mr. Spitzer took to West Palm Beach, Fla., Dallas and Washington, where he might have arranged to meet prostitutes.
....... snipppp ...

..Ms. Stiles frequently made Mr. Spitzer’s travel arrangements and paid with her own credit card, according to a person with knowledge of the campaign’s operations. Ms. Stiles, who often accompanied Mr. Spitzer on trips to coordinate fund-raising events, was comfortable incurring hotel and other charges that would be reimbursed later, the person said.

Such an arrangement is unusual, said several people with considerable experience in the financial dealings of campaign committees, including one who had worked on a prior Spitzer campaign. They said fund-raising consultants usually insist that the campaign pay directly for flights, hotels and ballrooms because they do not want to be without that money while waiting for reimbursement or to get stuck with the bill. ...

Charles E. Clayman, a criminal defense lawyer and a former federal prosecutor, said he was retained by Ms.Stiles’s ...

..snippp - snippp ..

The State Board of Elections requires campaigns to itemize reimbursements for individual purchases of $50 or more. Campaigns are supposed to list any recipient’s name and address, along with the date, check number and purpose. It is this kind of backup documentation that the authorities now want to examine.

Before going to work for Mr. Spitzer, Ms. Stiles worked for former Representative Richard A. Gephardt, of Missouri, as a low-level fund-raising official. Two senior Gephardt campaign staff members said on Saturday that they had only a faint
recollection of Ms. Stiles.

When she was working for Mr. Gephardt, Ms. Stiles put in for monthly reimbursements for travel, but they appeared to be for her own costs, and the amounts were far less than the ones she had put in for with Mr. Spitzer 2010 campaign committee, records showed.

..snipppp ..

Her lawyer, Mr. Clayman, has his own connection to Mr. Spitzer. He once represented a couple charged with diverting hundreds of thousands dollars of donations from Hale House, a Harlem charity. The state attorney general who brought the case was Mr. Spitzer.

I love how anything that comes up against Clinton must be finecombed for sexist comments and anything that comes up against Obama must be finecombed for racist comments.

Can't we just allow humour to be humour? Even when it has racist/sexist overtones? Or do we have to ring the alarm for anything being sexist/racist? Just gets annoying to me now that anytime someone tries to lighten the mood on this stuff and make a point, somehow has to fire that its racist/sexist.

Also, Tina Fey's was just a few arguments embellished with metaphors; Tracy Morgan's was a collection of succinct points and counterpoints. To the average viewer, Fey's might have been more convincing, but to somebody closely following the campaign, Morgan's was a lot more truthful.

In your estimation. Let me guess, you are an Obama supporter? What I would like to know is how many of Morgan's relatives had their hands out during the Clinton years?

Not to say that Traci Morgan isn't funny, just not here -- but all he said showed the usual childish obsession with the word "bitch," which is, I guess, written into the Obama campaign literature, right?

Meanwhile, while the web was taking glee is a Hillary superdelegate getting nailed by the feds -- and dissing his wife as a stand-in for Hillary -- I mean, famous doyenne and former homewrecking adulterer Sally Quinn was completely indignant! Meanwhile, Greg Palast tells us what was going on:

http://www.gregpalast.com/elliot-spitzer-gets-nailed/

So, they spied on Spitzer, found prostitutes -- which destroyed him politically, don't get me wrong -- and just happened to leak this to the press in time for the Bear Stearns bailout. Hmm, no wonder there was a big market rally when Eliot's statue was taken down. Didn't last, but a big rally.

But go ahead, peeps, keep having your "I'm taking, like, total umbrage" pissing contests. They're going to win in the fall if we don't get our act together.

My theory is the more racist and sexist and uptight this country is, the more people are willing to shell out higher cost for illegal activities such as drug, sex, and violent animal sports.

Spitzer is a perfect example, he enforce busting the prostitution ring and had to pay so much extra to get it for himself. The law of supply and demand.

Yea, funny. Shows you the level of intelligence of the average Obama supporter if they think that was funny. Fey labeled herself to bond with the Hillary and the crap she always gets. Pointing out that sometimes you have to be a bitch to get things done. Morgan just echos what Muslims and hip hop gang bangers think about women. Bitches and hos ain't good for nothing. The american hating, white hating muslims can not be allowed to take over this country. It's not the idea of a black president that scares us, its the idea that an anti-american regime will take over. Violence and hate seems to be the only resolution coming from this community.

When the Spitzer thing broke, I knew Seth & Amy had to bring out their "A-game" for this kind of media gold. They delivered. The Really!?! segment was the only good one since they roasted Michael Vic. Tracey Morgan's comments/rebuttal was brilliant. I don't think I've laughed that hard at Weekend Update since the days of Dennis Miller.

It's hard to be that GOOD every time. Letterman's Top 10 is rarely as funny as this was. Even Chevy Chase isn't funny all the time, remember his brief stint as a late night host?

In summary and in conclusion, that was better than Tim Calhoun. But that's like comparing apples to prostitutes.

I almost don't want to reply to you just because you had like five of the last seven comments, kind of carrying on a conversation with yourself... but I'll make some arguments against some of your points anyway. If Ferraro thinks he lacks credentials and experience to be president, she should speak up against Hillary considering him to be VP. She's not. Apparently he has enough experience to be second in command. This does not make sense. Second, while I have no idea what McCain's church is like (and I shouldn't really have any idea what Obama's is like), he DID get an endorsement from that Hagee guy who has some incredibly offensive, hateful stances and the ONLY place I see people pointing this out is in the "liberal blogosphere." I saw more MSM coverage on Obama's pastor than on McCain's endorsement from Hagee beyond a shadow of a doubt. Third, the "hip hop" culture is not all about misogyny. You're just aware of the negative stereotypes hip hop has in the mainstream media. Fourth, in response to some of your insinuations in recent posts, specifically the racism "coming from churches like Wright’s towards whites, jews, and anybody else who doesn’t bow to allah"... you do know that Allah is traditionally how Muslims refer to God and not Christians, right? Are you still under the impression that Obama is a Muslim even though that never had validity and Wright's church is obviously Christian? Those things made me think you were some hit and run anti-Obama guy throwing things out to see what stuck, but your persistent posting makes me think maybe you really want some discussion and are just confused.

Well, I just re-watched Tina Fey's bit and I don't see it as particularly enlightening. For the record, I wasn't blown away by Tracy's either. Anyway, I know this is all supposedly humor (though I took it as just a flat out endorsement for Hillary), but a few things really, really rub me the wrong way. Kind of insulting the intelligence of women who vote for Obama (because "Oprah told them to.") "Why are people abandoning Hillary for Obama?" suggests that Hillary either had his supporters or had an inherent right to his supporters. She made "bitch" enough of her segment that Tracy Morgan HAD to address it in his response. I remember that this happened the Saturday before the almost-Super-Tuesday in early March, and Tina is just flat out campaigning for Hillary on what's supposed to be some comedy show. They had already done an anti-Obama skit to open the show (the first of two "hey look at how soft the media is on this guy" weeks in a row). Just left a bad taste in my mouth. She only came on that night to campaign for Hillary and had to create some jokes around the premise. Amy Poehler is great and I'm scared they've already started overusing with her like they did Will Ferrell. Are we supposed to take away from this that it's okay to refer to ambitious women as bitches now, or is that where the humor comes in? She's not really saying it in a joking manner. Anyway, enough analysis on a weeks-old skit. I'd still vote Clinton over McCain any day, just wish I liked her campaign more.

If bitch is the new black and black is the new president - doesn't that make the bitch the new president?

The statement is: "Bitch may be the new Black, but Black is the New President, Bitch."

Logically, the statement means:
1. Bitch displaced the 'old' Black and is the 'new' Black
2. The 'old' Black displaces the 'new' President.
Ergo, Bitch is relegated to old term 'black' while original term 'Black' takes over the Presidency.

okey dokey, let us get one thing straight America. Allah means God (literally, Al = the, Ilah = God. Allah, "The God"). Islam is related to Christianity and Judaism. Islam faces many of same problems Christianity does: The fundamentalists do crazy shit, and the entire religion gets blamed. People should try and learn a bit about other religions and cultures, and stop listening to Fox News.

As for Hillary vs. Obama, it feels very much like Hillary is making this big fuss about everything, pointing fingers and blaming and saying he cannot answer a phone, and Obama is keeping his cool. Maybe it's just the way that I receive my news, but I feel much more comfortable about having Obama in office than Hillary.

Her statement isn't even comparable to Obama's church. There was no hate in her statements. Obama spent 20 plus years being mentored by a hate monger. Can you imagine if Hillary or McCain wen to a church with David Duke as pastor. The media would have went crazy- and rightly so-- and their candidacy would have been dead. The Clintons have fought for all people their entire lives-- even against popular opinion-- and the Obama race baiters have the nerve to call them racist. Sad state of affairs in the African-american community right now. Obama and hate-filled churches will not improve their community. Education and recognizing that it is not selling your race out to assimilate as the rest of this melting pot has so willingly done. 90 percent of non-blacks in this country are not KKK racists. But we don't embrace the misogny [sic] and hate that is embraced in the hip hop culture. That is not progress as a people. As I say, we want peace and prosperity for all.

So being black makes one a shoo-in for Prez? Ferraro's statement that a black man running for President is "lucky" is so laughable as to give rise to the inference of racism -- a black man couldn't be qualified in her world view. I have seen about 3 minutes, out of context (no when, where, to whom info), of over-the-top rhetoric with valid underlying points. And Obama says he never heard these statements. Is there reason to believe he is being untruthful? Why do you tie Obama to "the hip hop culture?" How much time do you spend in the "African-american community[sic]" so as to have an opinion? "[A]ssimilate as the rest of this melting pot has so willingly done" -- remember, Africans were kidnapped and sold into chattel slavery. They did not willingly immigrate here. That is hard to fathom if you haven't exerienced it. Much of the South was legally segregated until the mid '60's. 1960's. Assimilation is kind of hard when it is illegal. Did you ever hear a white southern preacher on race , say, 40 years ago? My Dad did. It wasn't pretty. Have you listened to Obama? Does he sound remotely like the the guy in those three minutes of sound bites? Not to me. "Can you imagine if Hillary or McCain wen to a church with David Duke as pastor." Yes, I have seen McCain embrace a right-wing talk show host just as out of line. McCain said he didn't hear the statements? Enough said.

No wonder the country is going down, can't believe they air this filth

No wonder the country is going down--free education is ubiquitous but people choose to use improper grammar while mocking others.

Come on, people. At least fix up your own crap before calling something else trash.

Unfortunately Tracy missed the one question I had from watching that stupid Hillary commercial with the phone ringing at 3:00 in the morning...how long is the bitch going to let the phone ring? At the end we see why it took her so long to answer the thing...she had to get her makeup on!

Yes, I definitely am against Clinton for president, and not (as some people have accused) because she's a strong woman...it's because she the WRONG woman.

I would vote for Christine Gregiore in a New York minute for the oval office...the only thing I would vote for Hillary for, is to send her back to New York.

I thought SNL was supposed to be funny. It used to be funny, back when they had some real talent (e.g. Belushi, Chase, Radner, et al). Now it's pretty much irrelevant.

Yeah real talent like Murphy, Rock and Morgan

"Is it because she was married to the president? If that were the case then Robin Givens would be the heavyweight champion of the world."

"Saying that Hillary has Executive Branch experience is like saying Yoko Ono was a Beatle."

Keep making them up!

Not that I'm scared or anything but I'm a conservative Republican supporting Hillary .. not because of Rush but because she is the most conservative thinking left standing of the remaining three.
