It's "Alienate Female Readers Day" at Wapo...again.
By bluegal Wednesday Mar 26, 2008 4:01pmYes, we love any excuse to post another Anne Taintor magnet, but just how much more misogynistic can The Washington Post get? Not satisfied with the "why are women so stupid?" story, today's editorial by Michael Kinsley regarding how long it takes Senator Clinton to get ready in the morning seems like an office dare gone horribly wrong.
As more than one insightful blogger has asked, "You taking the afternoon off, Michael?"

Don't be too hard on Kinsley - he suffers from penis envy.
Well at least there's some good news...

Girls don't poop
ferkrissake! The MSM needs to grow up! Who in hell cares how long it takes someone to get ready?! Honestly... WTF?!
Don't tell me that girl is named TAINTor
LOL
Did anyone actually read the column? To me, it was basically about how gender double standards still exist in our society, and that if Sen. Clinton didn't make sure her makeup was perfect, etc, she'd be criticized. And that such criticism seems sort of unfair.
I pretty much agree with that and don't think making the point that women suffer from a gender double standard when it comes to how they look is something that's stupid to write a column about.
Barrett D @ 3:
Well, my mom, grandmas and aunts don't, but my sister and any other woman that I've ever shared a bathroom with all have...or at least it sure as hell smelled like it.
AS IF...
You think Romney, or Edwards, or Obama, or even crusty McCain don't take an hour to get their suits shined,
their faces powdered and their nails buffed before they go out to lay some of their bullshit on us?
Please!
I'm so angry at Hillary right now I don't care to read anything about her. She said last night on fox that she's willing to take his race all the way to the credentials committee at the convention.
She's all about getting Florida and Michigan to count now. Yeah, now that she's behind. She is blaming the Obama camp for not getting re-votes in those two states. Obama has said he would play by the rules and that's what he's done.
Hillary is more about winning that she is about democracy.
Okay now I've said my piece, I'll go and read the links.
I saw the tagline and couldn't bear to read it.

Bluegal:
It's not just "Alienate Female Readers" day.
There are many men, myself among them, that love women.
We are alienated as well.
Somehow I'm not upset even a tad that Mrs. Clinton must take time to make herself presentable to the hoards of hatemongers she must face daily. I used to be VERY upset at the inordinate amount of time George W. Bush spends daily on himself, his bike riding, nap-taking, vacationing; that is, until I saw what happens when he tries to be presidential. I think the entire premise of this so-called article is demeaning, angering and upsetting: All the reasons why I do not read newspapers anymore, especially the Whore Post. Like all rags, they don't give a shit what they put around their fast-dwindling ads.
I gotta go with JoshA @ 6 on this one. You can still disagree with the column, but Kinsley was clearly talking about double standards and clearly considered those double standards unfair to women. "You Look Beautiful Tonight" it wasn't.
Hey give her a break-- it takes a while to put on your Super Space Marine Anti-Sniper Power Armor.
pissed off patricia @ 9:
It may not seem so to you, but your post has nothing to do with the subject at hand.
Your bile against Hillary Clinton has made it impossible for you to recognize the nature of this piece of garbage journalism that demeans all women everywhere.
I think it is piss off Women Voters every day of the week on the blogs. I personally have stopped donating to these sites. And then guess what. When the newbies leave after the election, they only signed up to slam Hillary, wonder where the donations for the sites will come from. I think WOMAN should just stop...if a man is too damn much of a wimp to support women then we should stop supporting them financially.
Okay, I read the article and didn't learn anything I didn't already know. Women take more time becoming presentable because they do more stuff than men do. Okay, Hillary is a woman so it takes her longer to get ready.
If any of the male candidates appeared unshaven, their hair a mess and they smelled like yesterday's socks, that wouldn't work out for them.
Everyone does what they can and what they like to be accepted into their society. You make time for the things that are important to you and if your appearance is important to you, you will make the time to do all those things required.
From Kinsley's column: "Any man who has twiddled his thumbs waiting for his wife or opposite-sex partner to get ready to go out . . . "
Only *opposite-sex* partners? What about same-sex ones? I'm sure plenty of queens spend half a day getting ready.
Dumb stuff. Who gives a hoot?
If I looked like Kinsley, I'd keep my mouth shut.
pissed off patricia @ 9:
Other than being slammed, flamed, slurred and swiftboated constantly what in the heck does Hillary Clinton have to do with the fact that the MSM thinks it is being cutesy to do so.
I bet they don't ask obama which tie his wife allows him to wear with which outfit. Or the same of any of the male wimps out there.
Didn't we see bush being groomed, powdered, hair fixed and make up applied before he got in front of the public to tell them HE HAD JUST STARTED A WAR...but that's a man he can do what he wants.
Barrett D @ 3:
its true!
Marge @ 21:
Hi Marge,
I've missed you and your comments. Glad to see you are still in fine form.
Breaking News Siegelman release http://rawstory.com/news/2008/Siegelman_sought_for_Hill_testimony_0327.html
Did you RTFA? I mean the article goes on to basically say that Clinton has to do a lot more as a woman because of the expectations placed on women about their look, etc. Hillary ALWAYS looks put together and considering that as a woman she has to deal with make up, getting just the right clothes, etc, it's impressive. It seems to me that his article is essentially positive for Hillary. As a woman she has to deal with a hell of a lot more BS than any man does and part of it is that looking good on TV crap that does consume a lot of time.
Michael Kinsley sure has a perty mouth.
I'd like to think he wrote this with tongue in cheek. But I dont think he's that smart. WTF is going on at the Post? They must have street people as guest editors.
I could accept that if, for balance, they did a report on how long it takes McCain to pee.
What 40 minutes to be presentable - oh dear when that 3am call comes they'll be told to hold for 40 minutes.
JoshA @ 6:
I was asking the same question. I read the column and thought it was good for the same reasons you point out. I tell you, I get really tired of the knee-jerk reactions from my fellow liberals over things they haven't even read. That sort of group-think is what I expect from conservatives but C&L readers (and editors) should be sharper than that.
Yes, I did read the article. And imo, there is NO reason to bring up the makeup issue in the editorial pages of the Washington Post. Kinsey is writing a piece on fluffy gender differences rather than political realities because he hasn't a clue. Painting it over with the "life is unfair" conclusion does not excuse the intimation that Senator Clinton will lose valuable sleep because her LOOKS matter more than the other candidates. Why didn't they tell that to Golda Meir and Maggie Thatcher? --BG
Paul Wolfowitz should take some grooming tips from Hillary.
http://darisa.files.wordpress.com/2007/02/paul-wolfowitz-socks.jpg
Did any of you even read this? Get a grip, nothing so bad here.
It's worse than Kinsley lets on -- apparently women have extra chores in the bathroom, if you know what he means.
Apparently male candidates can even campaign on the toilet. Just look at the war hero Larry Craig's been dating under the door.
At 3:00 AM, HRC is still wrestling with her girdle and barking orders to her bedposts.
Lefty @ 30:
I do not believe Michael Kinsley could have offered a more effective OpEd for motivating female voters to line up behind Hillary Clinton.
You don't suppose...
Misoginistic?! I just went and looked at those magnets. It's called satire.
It's making fun of 1950's attitudes and values.
Ah, Michael Kinsley, Michael Kinsley, Michael Kinsley.
He has thoughts and dreams and imaginations and assemblies I could never think of, dream of, imagine, or assemble.
Yet he is such my superior. In all my thoughts, dreams, imaginations, and assemblies I could never blow it out my anus like he did.
If only I had his brain. Then I could take his high road to spewing it forth on the highway.
pissed off patricia @ 9:
Noooooo. Don't read the links, you'll kill yourself.
lol
Steve @ 25:
Do tell. The blacks only have to plow the back nine before they can sign baseball caps in the noon. Hillary has to check to make sure all her knives and switchblades are in place.
McCain't? He has to find his brain in the pickle jar before stumbling out into the light of anther day of insanity and warmongering. They won't let him have shoe-laces. He washes his face with dead rats, once a week. It's easier being (insane) a man.
pissed off patricia @ 23:
Marge.
I think you had better write your next comment in all caps so that Pat can read and perhaps comprehend what you write.
Marge @ 17:
Marge, I think you just hate men. I don't dislike Hill because she is not a man. I dislike her for a few reasons (I will vote for her if she gets the nomination) not the least of which it takes her too long to get ready in the morning.
How can Hillary comprehend? If she took time to read the damn thing, she wouldn't have time to stuff her donkey with toilet water, spin dry her dirt whistle, and make muffins for the first 100 little soldiers who stand in front of their school to cheer her on.
Teacher, who is the crazy lady in the clown outfit? She's pretty.
Just when I thought a bad paper couldn't get any worse...

Marge @ 21:
Boy did they start a thread for you Marge! I would be willing to wager, IF a decent qualifed was running for the Dem candidacy, she would be voted for. It just seems that THIS particular woman, is not liked. Doesn't matter what sex this person was at all. She lies and lies continually. Oh, gotta go. Incoming sniper fire!!
Captain Hussein Kangaroo @ 41:
Marge doesn't grasp that, though everybody has been repeating it to "her" for as long as I can remember. She hates men. Therefore, if you don't vote for Hillary, you hate women. Black and white. Wonder if she will support Condi when she runs for VP, just because she is a woman.
phayce @ 28:
Or what brand of hand cream Lieberman uses so he doesn’t chaff McCain when he holds it for him :-)
I did read the article and have to say I found it to be a tad irritating. Instead of writing about serious issues like her recent speech on the economy or her foreign policy views, all the WaPo can write are "tongue-in-cheek" articles about Hillary's cleavage and her morning ablutions. Perhaps Hillary can save an extra 30 minutes each morning using my trick - by no longer reading the WaPo daily as I once did. Um, with the exception of Dan Froomkin and the White House Watch – I couldn’t possibly give up my daily dose of Dan Froomkin.
Gotto go- I have some swoonin' and weepin' to do....
Candidate Incoming! has more problems than Lawn Jockey McCain't because her hoohoo takes more getting ready than his nana.
And the WaPo has a nose fur that kind of news.
Yes, it's inane fluff that shouldn't have been published in a serious paper. Except for a bit of stereotyping (while simultaneously decrying stereotyping), it's not exactly an evil piece. Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see a cause for outrage, just mild snickering...
I'm ready in half the time.
I don't read anything from the Washington Post any more, not in print and not online. I don't even click links to them either. Screw 'em.
They are a waste of time. Howell isn't going to change shit. Crap is what they print and crap is not what I want to read.
It's an op-ed piece. I don't see what the big fuss is about. Does it have a place in a national paper? Well, the way news is reported, yes. It will blend with the American Idol crowd perfectly. Is it sexist? I didn't think so. I've spent alot of my life waiting on my wife to get ready anytime we go anywhere. That's not to say (like this op-ed pointed out) that there aren't men that are the same. My daughter's boyfriend takes on average 3 hour showers. Unreal.
The way the media has not covered this campaign, this op-ed surprises me not. It's much better to appeal to sexism, racism, and patriotism, than it is to point out that the main ingredient these candidates all have in common is basically catch phrases.
Ditto:
Did anyone actually read the column? To me, it was basically about how gender double standards still exist in our society, and that if Sen. Clinton didn’t make sure her makeup was perfect, etc, she’d be criticized. And that such criticism seems sort of unfair.
I pretty much agree with that and don’t think making the point that women suffer from a gender double standard when it comes to how they look is something that’s stupid to write a column about.
I do my thinking when I'm primping. Ideas and organization are the results. I recommend a good 40 minutes to any man who wants to start the day off right.
Thanks, Bluegal. At first glance, I didn't understand why this (stupid, trivial, pointless) article would be described as misogynist; but I get your point. However, I wouldn't be shocked if there were an article about Obama's grooming habits before we finish.
It's a fluff op-ed. Michael Kinsley couldn't think of anything to write so it was this. There is soooooooo much more to get pissed about htan this. Jeez. BFD.
All Trades @ 40:
HA!! Thanks.

Her new titanium head is supposed to be maintenance free.
She does keep getting kittens caught in her treads.
And the masher flipped around and now is squashing her fellow Democrats -- somebody has to get the spring fixed.
I cordially loathe and despise Hillary Clinton, but that column by Kinsley was about the stupidest thing I've ever seen.
It takes Hillary a while to get ready because she has to memorize all the nasty things Mark Penn wants her to say.
Someone. Stop me. Please. Before I lay another egg again.
Shave me.
*snort*
big deal. so what did i learn from kinsley's piece, that i might take a little longer than a man at times to get out of the house because i'm doin' my "grrl stuff" like make up?
ok, fair enough but i'd love to know how long it takes kinsley to stuff that big fat head of his up his equally bloated posterior every morning.
just sayin'.
I haven't read it yet, but I like at least 2 hours to myself in the morning, OR I'M GRUMPY ALL MORNING. Is that a crime? I take my time, and putter around as I get ready. My answer, I get up at 4 a.m. and enjoy the morning. No big deal: I don't inconvenience others. I'm NEVER late for anything!!!!
How is this news? Wapo, that's directed at YOU!!!!!
Boston squawk radio harridan Michele McPhee once blasted local pol Peggy Davis Mullen for being known to show up at campaign events from time to time in sandals and for not having regular pedicures, which Michele pronounces "pedicuwahs."
Kills me that people actually listen to this crap.
While I can understand the desire to avoid spending precious minutes of one's life on such an insipid collection of essentially useless paragraphs, JoshA, Bob and Steve (and I) appear to be some of the few who have actually perused the whole thing. And while The Post deserves our ridicule for wasting column inches - virtual or otherwise - on this kind of pabulum, and it is no way an exemplar of feminist prose, it's pretty hard for me to buy the premise that this article is on the same misogynistic level as Charlotte Allen's self-loathing foolishness.
It is instead - for all its other ham-handed failings - one that focuses (or attempts to) on the double standards associated with appearance that women in public life (and elsewhere) are forced to handle. Whatever brings your outrage to full boil, I guess, but in my own humble opinion, I find it pretty hard to justify, and personally, I think there are worthier targets.
MUCH worthier targets.
A LOT of much worthier targets.
Helena Montana @ 59:
Ahhh, the politics of "loathe and despise"....No wait, I mean "hope and change".
Gotta love it.
JoshA @ 6:
You are correct. Surely C&L has more important things to address than this rather obvious double standard.
Steve @ 25:
And to think that she can accomplish such feats and simultaneously dodge sniper rounds in heels...
Paul in LA @ 61:
Oh look, someone posted with my handle trying to made fun of me. I wonder if site monitor could see who did that, and slap their hand with a ruler.
"She could no longer pretend her husband was in the other room getting head" - Goooooo Feminism!
Maybe that is why she looks so much better than Obama, he looks like he slept in a ditch most of the time.
Don't most national newspapers want broad appeal?
The truth is that this argument puts Clinton -- or for that matter, any female political candidate -- in a position where there's no way for her to win. The fact that Clinton is the first serious female Presidential candidate in US history automatically means that she's going to be subjected to greater scrutiny than most of the other candidates (with Obama, as the first serious African-American Presidential candidate, being the exception) -- and while some of that extra scrutiny may be legitimate and fair, sexism is by no means dead in this country and it's reasonable to assume that at least some of this extra scrutiny is an attempt to find support for the idea that women really aren't qualified to be President.
Bluestocking @ 74:
Sexism is not dead, that is absolutely true. I have also come to the sad realization that men who don't like Hillary seem to simply dislike her and leave it at that, but the women who don't like her seem to border on fanatical rage against her, almost as if they have something to prove. I'm trying to imagine but cannot envision, a scenario wherein a bi-racial candidate engenders more loathing from African-Americans than from whites. I have yet to hear anyone say, "I'll vote for a black candidate but not THAT black candidate," (meaning Barack).
Obviously I support Hillary. But as I told someone the other day, all the candidates are phony. It's just that I prefer her style of phoniness to the others'.
Shirley Chisholm said during her run for the presidency that she faced more hostility for being a woman than for being black.

Of course the spinsterish librarian glasses didn't help.
