Republican Sex Follies: We have some good news, and some bad news...

For days, Bruce Barclay's political career hung in the balance. The Republican commissioner of Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, had been accused of rape -- by a man, no less -- and the police were bearing down. Barclay's lawyer issued a strong denial ("This accusation of rape is ludicrous It will be defended forever and is wrong."). But it was clear things were looking pretty dicey. Until... vindication! Well, sort of.
On March 31st, police, investigating the allegation of rape by the 20-year old Marshall McCurdy, obtained a warrant to search Barclay's home. They didn't find evidence of rape. But they did find videotapes of hundreds of sexual encounters with men that Barclay had filmed on high-tech surveillance cameras. The cameras were hidden inside AM/FM radios, motion detectors and intercom speaker systems, among other places. There was also one at his business office. [..]
On April 10th, the rape charges were dropped. One of the videos found during the search showed Barclay and McCurdy engaging in apparently consensual sex. [..]
Sadly, his vindication was his undoing. Barclay was forced to resign.
Of course, Barclay may be out of the frying pan, but he definitely landed in the fire. He faces charges of privacy violations, among others. McCurdy, on the other hand, is facing charges of making false reports to law enforcement and faces up to 3 years in prison.

In Michigan, eavesdropping, such as this, would be a felony. As such, much easier to prove than the original charge.

Barclay could have still raped McCurdy regardless of the evidence of consensual sex, unless McCurdy stated that he was raped on that same instance Barclay taped.

I have no idea of the details of the relationship between these men, but even people in committed, long-term, consensual relationships can rape and be raped. There are cases of husbands that raped their wives, for example. I'm not trying to convict anyone here without the facts, but do not be mistaken that a consensual relationship negates the possibility of rape.

This one isn't about him being Republican, in fact I think the left blogosphere should stop trying to make hay when any Tom Dick or Hairy Dick that's identified as (R) is involved in a sex scandal, that chicken WILL come back to roost.
It's fair game to go after someone well known for "Family values", belonging to the Bible thumpers or attacking gay rights, but these attacks on local pols that have no such agenda are as self righteous as the Bible thumpers themselves. Do you really want to be like the very people you pretend to distain? Then why act like them?

You mean people lie about being raped? Next you'll tell me that children are sometimes coerced by police to give testimony that could result in a death sentence in Louisiana, for example. Well, like any good prosecuter, I just refuse to believe any new account that would harm a juicy prosecution. He's clearly lying about making it up. The consentual sex is just proof that he had the opportunity. It's just too bad we're dealing with man on man sex, which is a tough sell. But, hey, we've got him on secret sex tapes! woo-hoo! There's life in this still!
