Jon Stewart Eviscerates ABC's Hacktacular Debate
By SilentPatriot Thursday Apr 17, 2008 11:00am
Jon Stewart does what he does best and demolishes ABC debate moderators Charlie Gibson and George Stephanopoulos for the pathetic questions they asked on Wednesday.

The first hour of last night's debate was a 60 minute master class in questions that elevate out-of-context remarks and trivial, insipid miscues into subjects of natural discourse...which is my job! Stop doing my job! That's what I'm here for! I'm the silly man!

I truly miss Peter Jennings.
Hey ABC:
Stick to crime dramas and re-runs of Disney movies. Your days as a serious news organization are over.
I also miss Peter. One of the last great ones.
The sad thing is that even as Stewart tries to point out the train wreck through humor ... there's really very little that's funny about it.
And broadcast media wonders why it keeps losing market share to the internet ...
I missed this but I do remember thinking when I watched the debate that Boy George was doing a Stephen Colbert impersonation.
Thanks for this - FYI, a typo: Transcript should read "subjects of national discourse," not "subject of natural discourse" - I'm pretty sure I heard Stewart correctly.
(I'm an English teacher, and you know how we are ;-) )
I could care fucking less if Obama got tougher questions. He's a bright guy and can handle himself with those two goofs. Gibson and Stephanopoulos totally pissed on their credibility with worthless questions to both candidates.
ABC claims they did what they did because those were the items most evident in the news.
Would it not have made more sense to come up with something new, something that has not been made hash of over the last few weeks.
How to strengthen the dollar? How to keep the the housing fiasco from happening again? Should the Feds keep raising and lowering interest rates causing the huge fluctuations in variable rate mortgages and personal bank loans, and higher earnings on savings, which are all counterproductive to the economy? Since republicans claim that McCain is not conservative enough, are Obama and Hillary liberal enough? What have conservative ever done for this country besides the obvious deficits, huge increases in the national debt, regressive policy in medical and economical research, ignore global warming, deny women control over her reproductive system, denying gays equal rights. and on and on.
Where do these Craptacular Doofusses get off calling this a 'Debate'?
Face it, the moderators acted like Hannity neo-clones.
Well, I missed it and guess I didn't miss much.. I now I have some idea on why a friend of mine said he tuned out about 10 minutes into the thing... Stewart is, as always, soda snortin thru nose halarious, and spot on in his take on it all from what I gather watching this clip... Yea, pretty pathetic as debates goes evidently.. Sounds like watching Eddie Money's MTV vid, two tickets to paradise on and endless loop would have been a better investment of ones time... You know, if MTV actually showed music videos anymore... and how sad is that??? Way to go ABC...Way to strike a blow for honest serious political debate...ha! What a bunch of lame-oos!!...JD
That debate has to be the most negatively reviewed debate in history. Gibson and Stephanopoulos must be ashamed to pass their colleagues in the hall.
Gibson And Stephanopoulos: The Keystone Flops
Another case of reality trumping comedy.

ABC thinks that Faux is news? No wonder the MSM is in the toilet.
Enough already with the catalog of symtoms. What is the disease? What is the cure? It's gone to take much more than another stupid election (stolen or otherwise) to cure that...
But they were very important questions, frankly I'm surprised they didn't ask Obama about his pandering to the California and Florida orange growers what with him preferring oj over coffee. Like, seriously. Ok I'm being sarcastic, just saw a headline on Google news about Hillary whining that Barrack was whining about the supposed "tough" questions. I didn't watch the debates, but from the clips I saw it was just shameful.
OMG that was f-ing hilarious :D! John could have hosted the debate with his hand puppet and given it more dignity!!
Kerry's error was that he did not fight back fiercely enough against the fake swift boat attacks...
Obama has to address the most stupid charges on the stump...
Patriotism: Soldiers sacrifice the most for their country. But theirs is not the only form of patriotism there is. Opposing a dumb war is patriotic. Community service is patriotic. Working hard in a factory, as a teacher, as an engineer is patriotic. Demanding that government serve the interests of hard working americans is patriotic. Voting is patriotic. Running for pres, because he believes the american dream and a fair shake belongs to all americans, all races and classes, is patriotic. all these are more important than who wears a flag pin
Associations: He should say, that he believes in talking to people he does not agree with on all things. Just because some people have bad qualities and controversial qualities, does not mean there is no good in them. No one is perfect. Some people have said and done some crazy things in their life. But it does not benefit the country to have them thrown under the bus and ignore the good work they have done. Working with people on where there is common ground, is what he is about.
A divided house cannot stand. He should be judged by his record and his words, if inartful
he needs to face these fake issues directly while trying to keep the high ground
cburell @ 5:
Transcript should read "subjects of national intercourse,"
Were they trying to outstupid Katie Couric?
ysbaddaden @ 17:
Because we're all getting intercoursed up the ass?
ABC has become a laughing stock. An object of ridicule. Congratulations, ABC, you're halfway along in a race to the bottom, to being just another Faux News. Catering to the under-50-IQ crowd, with a cast of Sean Hannity's.
The woman that asked the "question" about flag pins is exactly who Obama was talking about when he mentioned people voting against their own interests.
And to think...I used almost like stephanopolous....I always though gibson was a schwance.
His clip showing Obama's performance going down in flames was horrible.
Amazing how folks ignore that meltdown.
A sure loser in the general.
ummm that should be..."used to almost like" ....gah! can I go home now?
That beer ain't gonna drink itself ya know!
We didn't watch, two older voters with high blood pressure, and I'm glad. If that McCabe woman wasn't evidence of a set-up, I don't know what would be.
Does the expression "YELLOW JOURNALISM" ring any bells?
That's exactly what we have now in this country. In fact, it's practically the only kind of journalism we have left.
getalife @ 23:
You got that just from this clip? Boy, it just goes to show that people will believe what they want to believe.
nochickenhawk @ 26:
Absolutely a plant
Stewart nailed it as usual. ABC owes Senators Obama and Clinton and most of all the American people an apology for this despicable and utterly stupid performance by its moderators.
Hannity Brags Of Influence Over Stephanopoulos: ‘I Suggested The Question’
So much for that librul media myth.
Doesn't anybody find it kind of ironic and funny that "fake news" like Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert actually report actual, real news than the other news channels?
I would be embarrased if I were ABC, CBS, and others. I'm not including Fraud News, since they are propaganda.
the three guys from "Top Gear" would have done a better job.
and they're not even Americans.
Embittered American named Janet Says: The woman that asked the “question” about flag pins is exactly who Obama was talking about when he mentioned people voting against their own interests.
Exactly.
Gee, where were all of you Democrats when Edwards and Clinton were being raped by the media? Punkin'head anyone?
Dr. Biitter Hussein Matt @ 31:
Has anyone aske Stephy why he went on Shammity's radio show???
Stewart and Colbert, the best One-Two punch since Peanut butter & jelly.
Dr. Acula @ 36:
That wouldn't be a legitimate question....it doesn't deal with middle names, bowling scores, or flag pins.
John's pretty pissed. Gibson and Stepha-whatever were working HIS SIDE of the street.
Pimp-slap they ass, John!
I fully expect Jerry Springer to moderate the next debate.
We need to send more e-mails and phone calls asking about Mrs. Nash McCabe involvement with ABC mafia hit job, I mean this is so evil even by FAUX NEWS standard. They went looking for Mrs McCabe because she gave an interview with Times say she hated Sen. Obama, remember she's the only person from the outside given the chance to ask a question, and they knew it would be directed toward Sen. Obama.(mafia preplan hit job)
Dr. Biitter Hussein Matt @ 31:
The Hannity influence was pretty obvious. Not just anyone can come up with questions that stupid and irrelevant.
Dr. Acula @ 34:
There should be, at least, a minimum IQ to be allowed to vote. She actually said "How can I vote for a president who won't wear a flag pin?" Idiots like this, fuck us all.
10 Debate Questions John McCain Will Never Be Asked:
1. Do you agree with Pastor John Hagee that war with Iran is the fulfillment of biblical prophecy?
2. Doesn't your legendary temper make you too dangerous to be trusted with the presidency of the United States?
3. Doesn't your confusion regarding basic facts about the war in Iraq, including repeatedly citing a nonexistent Al Qaeda-Iran alliance, make you unfit for command?
4. Given your past adultery, should Americans consider you a moral exemplar of family values?
5. Doesn't your flip-flop on Jerry Falwell being an "agent of intolerance" show your opportunistic pandering to the religious right?
6. Given your wealth and privileged upbringing, aren't you - and not Barack Obama - the elitist?
7. What is your religion, really? And has the answer in the past changed as the South Carolina primary approached?
8. Didn't President Bush betray you with his signing statement on the Detainee Treatment Act? You claim to be against torture, but aren't you a hypocrite for voting "no" on the Senate waterboaring ban?
9. Why did you flip-flop on the Bush tax cuts you twice opposed? Why do you now support making them permanent for the wealthiest Americans who need them least?
10. With the economy tanking, shouldn't Americans be concerned over your past statements that "the issue of economics is not something I've understood as well as I should?"

Hey "Journalists"!
When the comedians are telling you you're f*cking silly, listen up!!
Despite criticism, ABC’s George Stephanopoulos defended his performance in last night’s Democratic debate, which he co-moderated with Charles Gibson.
“We asked tough but appropriate questions,” Stephanopoulos told me by phone this afternoon.
When I asked whether questions about flag pins or Bosnia are actually relevant to voters, he replied: “Absolutely.”
“The vote for the president,” Stephanopoulos said, “is one of the most personal” decisions that someone makes.
“When people make that choice, they take into account how candidates stand on the issues,” he said, but also are concerned with “experience, character [and] credibility.”
“You can’t find a presidential election where those issues didn’t come into play,” he said.
ya see, everyone, we just don't know what we really want to hear about. the public reacts in anger to the bogus "debate" on abcdisney and, wouldn't you know, we are all wrong!
thanks george snuffalufagus for telling us what we are really concerned about, despite the fact that we say we aren't concerned about such trivial and unimportant issues.
this is why the pundit/mediawhore class is so important to our democracy. the people, too dumb and ignorant to know what they want/need/care about, need father figures, like snuffalufagus, to guide us like sheep, to ensure that we don't stray too far from the media's narrative and the major imperative and prime directive of our national elections (that being that nothing may disturb the status quo, nothing)

Was the American flag just a piece of cloth prior to 9-11 ?
I'm wondering because NO BODY wore a lapel pin prior to 9-11, not even George W. Bush, and no one was offended by it.
Geno in Ptwon @ 32:
A classic example of only the court jesters being allowed to tell the truth.
I started screaming at the tv after the first 10 minutes. I just could not believe the utter shallowness of the questions being posed by these "journalists", in what was supposed to be an extremely important debate. This is absolute proof that the circle is now complete. Americans have been sooooo dumbed down that what passes as "important" these days is nothing more than the latest gossip.
I have noticed that a lot (note: I did not say ALL) pro-Hillary people seem to think these questions were ok just because they were directed at Obama. Can you really be so blind as to think these were worthwhile questions just because they weren't directed at the candidate that you are supporting? Do you not realize that this does a disservice to not only both candidates, but to the voters, as well? IdiotShrub has it right, the dumbing down of America is complete.
Next debates should be on TMZ. Maybe we can get some footage of crotch shots of the candidates getting out of their limos.
how bad was the moderation of this debate?
David Brooks gave it an A
Oh, man. That was good. I hope Stephanopolous and Gibson are royally embarrassed by their behavior. Everyone has been calling them out on it. Both should be ashamed to show their faces on national television now..
Dr. Acula @ 36:

It's not about showing love of country. It's like a substance abuser clamouring to their loved ones for support, when what they're really saying is "please continue enabling me, co-dependant".
The subtstance abusers are the ones in charge and the MSM. Their substance is blind loyalty.
IdiotShrub @ 51:
Hey, speak for yourself. Thousands complained to ABC about their hacktackularness!
Georgie and Charlie asked the questions that are foremost in the minds of concern trolls everywhere.
You know ABC is in trouble when even NPR attacked Gibson and Stephanopoulos this morning. Rather than defend themselves for their awful debate questions, Gibson and Stephanopoulos refused to speak to NPR. Hopefully, these brave 'journalists' will soon find more a more appropriate work environment at Fox News.
Chico Hussein @ 49:
Whoops, you must've made it through mind scrub by accident. But you can reapply....
ysbaddaden @ 19:
THAT deserves to be posted AGAIN!!! Well done, sir.
The woman in that video "question" is exhibit A of what republicanism has done to this once great country. They have their unwashed masses seeing red around in every single person that's not part of their church group, whether it's an implied terrorist, a communist, a socialist, a radical, a whatever. They can't help themselves anymore. They have turned this country 100% grade A stupid politically, and are making hateful scornful people out of peoples' relatives whle raking in millions of dollars and pulling psychological strings like it's a kiddie show.
The few words that woman uttered were some of the scariest I've heard in a few weeks. I'd wish it was years, but the repulicans have seen to making sure we all have a lot more to worry about. If we don't have a Democrat in the WH next January, the freedom, liberty, and pursuit of happiness party's officially over people.

Maybe someone should ask McSame if W and Cheney love America as much as Rev. Wright. One of these three volunteered for tours in both the Marines and the Navy. Another one went AWOL, and the last one got 5 deferments.
BlueIndependent @ 62:
One party will be over, and another will begin! Revolution!
Dust off your ass-whompin boots and get those torches and pitchforks ready!
To top all of this off, whenever moderators of a debate DO actually cover the real issues throughout, conservative talk shows call them liberally biased.
My father was at the battles of Iwo Jima and Guam in WWII. We displayed the American flag outside our rural home for decades. In 1991 I had a custom leather motorcycle jacket made with the American flag on the back - nobody made them then. After 9-11, there were hundreds available on Ebay - still are. I rarely wear mine anymore, not because I don't love this country but because it's become the Izod/Ocean Pacific-wear of the early 21st Century. One would think with so many "patriots" in this country the lines at the military recruitment offices would be around the corner, but, strangely, that doesn't seem to be the case.
Left&Left @ 47:

I thought Jon's "no disrespect" was the funniest thing in the piece.
ABC will have Brittney Spears and Milley Cyrus moderate the next debate. Both will be wearing micro mini skirts and stiletto heels, and the event will be televised from a brothel in Nevada.
I have to say the debate Pumkinhead Russert and Brainless Williams hosted was nearly as bad in my book. They opened with a slew of race-based questions. One of the heroes of this election season for me is the guy in the audience who heckled the moderators with "Why are you asking these questions? These are all race-based questions? Why are you asking them?"
archerofloaf @ 71:
Precisely. We are in a fascist state.
I just read a GREAT new name for today's mainstream journalists: media scuppers.

this show just gets better and better.
My only question: Why was it George Stephanopalotofpot and Charlie? Would have been more honest if it was Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly and Sean Hannity asking those bullshit questions!
Why didn't they ask "why do you hate America?" and "since all liberals and Democrats hate America, why aren't you running for president of France?"
Just asking...

b. i COULD care less, but i don't even care enough to put in the work required to MAKE myself care less. that's how little i care.

Notice how it's all warm&cozy looking, and she's common folk, in her wood-panelled, average-Pennsylvanian living room, complete with brass lamps. She's not bitter: she's patriotic. She lubs da flag.
Jon Stewart also showed that Barack Obama was embarrassingly inarticulate, practically incoherent in his answers to the issues questions in the second half of the debate.

I'm a fake English teacher, but I get it. A fake English teacher is a somewhat bright ESL teacher, that was never taught grammar, but self studies it on the internet, and by questioning other teachers. Have you seen Mr. Toth's grammar videos on YouTube?? Excellent. Tell your students. He's oddly hypnotic, and definitely passionate. What a gem.

Rain!!!! That's funny. I live in Seoul, so I get it. Koreans are like "the Borg": Korea is great. They organize "netizens" and scour the internet for the greatness of Korea. Trust me, it's kinda weird.
ABC/Disney is fair game. They must be upset their own candidate Fred Thompson, didn't get very far. ABC/Disney lifted the veil on their attempt at political manipulations with Pathway to 9/11. Proceed with extreme prejudice.
Stewart hit the nail on the head when he pointed out that Stephanolpplois referred to the economy as the "number one issue on Americans' minds" yet they asked it 60 minutes into the "debate."
Jon Stewart truly is the court jester: the only person in the room willing to appear ridiculous and by speaking the truth revealing how ridiculous the "serious" people are. I love Jon Stewart.
Only two kinds of people use the term "sheeple."
The idiots on the left, and the idiots on the right. Don't be one of them.
liberals insane with anger are so cute....
Has anyone noticed that Clinton has NEVER worn a flag pin on the lapel of any of her suits?
The absurdity of it all....
Neither Clinton and Obama are going to change the course of the US. We don't need more leaders. We are too far into this hole to get out. The only way to fix this shit is: Get out on the street, bring your friends. Destroy all the shit/assholes that ruins the nation, such as capitalist fatcats, authoritarian bastards, reactionary tv-shows, you name it. Then, rebuild it the way average american people such as you and me would like it. We have the technology to be fucking better than this shit.
I've got an idea, how hosting the next debate on Comedy Central with Jon Stewart. Not only is he a very talented comedian but he's also on the very few TV host that's in touch with the realities of Americans.

All right, children, I've been fighting this battle since I was in high school, and have yet to make a dent in the illiteracy level of the country.
People who think "I could care less" sounds fine are going to continue saying "I could care less," even though it makes them sound stupid to people from my generation. They only care about how they are perceived by their peer group, not how they sound to those of us who learned the correct grammar. That is how accepted usage changes over time: when enough people mis-use a phrase, it becomes the correct one, by general agreement on what is meant by it.
At this late date, I couldn't care less. I'd rather concentrate on something more relevant - like the obliteration of "Honing Pigeons." You know: the pigeons that "hone in" on a target with their little whetstones, and grind it into oblivion. Very destructive, unlike the inoffensive Homing Pigeons people used to breed for their ability to home in on an objective, and that made them useful for racing, and message-carrying and so on...
::Sigh::
In the spirit of irrelevancy.......I love cheese!
Yowsa............
..!
Where was everyone during the first 20 debates when, (particulary the one moderated by Timmy (I hate Clinton) and Tweety (I hate Clinton-more-than-you) Matthews) they tossed unrelentingly obnoxious questions to Hillary such as "How will you control your husband if you became president?" (or some such Monica-flapping crapola said for only one reason--to smear Clinton). The other Democrat candidates attacked Hillary every debate over and over. There are even You Tube bits about it. Hillary has been slashed and burned by the media (Keith Obamamann, et al) and the disrespectful, sexist, poking-rather-cruelly debate moderators--while Barack just slid through simply following Clinton and answering the "same" question many times with "what Hillary said."
So now Mr. Walk-on-water gets tossed the crappy questions this late date just enough before the election to give him the beginnings of a heads-up on what's in store for him from the Rethugs if he gets nom. The ABC clowns did Oback a favor, and he showed the next day how much he appreciated it with his speech that included his sly giving Hillary the Finger.
Miss that? Here ya go:

Like 'problematic' progressive women keep saying, Obama's an ass. But then we've had lots of experience with a particular type of ass who can stand most anything except losing to a girl.
Stuart O'Neill at Democratic Daily: I’ll withhold most of my profane reactions to this classless, deliberate playing to a young audience who have no political history to use as an anchor point for judgment. Barack Obama is an ass. And you can bet Hillary Clinton, in private, will react much, much more strongly. [I hope she keeps Bill away from any cameras for 24 hours, at least, to let him cool off.]
Wonderful.
Just what the country needs: another case of arrested development complete with frat boy sense of humor and entitlement in the White House.

barack is immature passive aggressive.
Gravatar He would not do this if she were male. I remember his " likable enough" comment. This guy is not ready for primetime, and anytime someone voices that truth they are branded a racist. Good grief, thanks to Kennedy, Kerry and Dean, the Dems are going to hand the keys to the White House over to the Republicans again.
And don't be naive; watch and listen to the response and feedback from his audience. This guy wants to be in control of our troops, have the ability to start a nuclear war, decide our future. Watch the video, listen to his audience (they get it); pretend this is a 7th grade class and you'll understand BHO.

And ObamaMANIACS think that most of the undecideds and those of us who support Hillary are going into the voting booth next November and vote for this character? NO WAY!!!!
Obama's opening remarks about debating Hillary were met with LOUD BOOS at her name....and he stood there grinning from ear to ear at the boos.
And his later gestures were wiping bird shit off his shoulder and dog shit off his shoe.
So, for sure he was flipping her the bird and there are camera angles that show his gestures were not only recognized by his crowd but just behind him one girl was pointing it out and explaining it to her seat mate, who then told the person next to her.
And then he lied about Hillary being the only one to go negative and went into Southern preacher drawl just for his "bring about change" drawl. You know what the #1 issue is, Obama, and ABC got to it in MINUTE ONE of the debate. It's WHO is going to lead us in the issues that face us.
What are you going to do in the fall if you can't handle answering the media's questions now?
Especially since there are MORE shady associations that will be coming out.
Obama is our lord and savior and will magically poof away all our problems. Don't you beeyotchez understand that!11!!!!

Wow, more proof that these televised "debates" mean squat. Too bad the general public is too stupid to understand that the first hour was hackery. If they read more instead of watching these two assholes ask dumbshit questions for an hour, they might understand that they are being treated like idiots.
It's funny how political bloggers get stuck with the description of being blowhards because they opine from their home offices in their spare time, perhaps after work and in their pajamas. But somehow, if you're on television, sit behind a desk and wear a suit and makeup and say the words someone else wrote on the teleprompter, you are legit and should be listened to. I hope that mainstream media goes the way of the dodo bird. It's beyond pathetic.
Thank God for the blogosphere, at least everyone's an equal and has a chance to sound off.
I think all the Bush-ites should go fight in the war they all support and hopefully die.
