McCain Pushed Land Swap That Benefits Backer
By Matthew Mosk
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, May 9, 2008; Page A01
PRESCOTT, Ariz. -- Sen. John McCain championed legislation that will let an Arizona rancher trade remote grassland and ponderosa pine forest here for acres of valuable federally owned property that is ready for development, a land swap that now stands to directly benefit one of his top presidential campaign fundraisers.
Initially reluctant to support the swap, the Arizona Republican became a key figure in pushing the deal through Congress after the rancher and his partners hired lobbyists that included McCain's 1992 Senate campaign manager, two of his former Senate staff members (one of whom has returned as his chief of staff), and an Arizona insider who was a major McCain donor and is now bundling campaign checks.
When McCain's legislation passed in November 2005, the ranch owner gave the job of building as many as 12,000 homes to SunCor Development, a firm in Tempe, Ariz., run by Steven A. Betts, a longtime McCain supporter who has raised more than $100,000 for the presumptive Republican nominee. Betts said he and McCain never discussed the deal.
The Audubon Society described the exchange as the largest in Arizona history. The swap involved more than 55,000 acres of land in all, including rare expanses of desert woodland and pronghorn antelope habitat. The deal had support from many local officials and the Arizona Republic newspaper for its expansion of the Prescott National Forest. But it brought an outcry from some Arizona environmentalists when it was proposed in 2002, partly because it went through Congress rather than a process that allowed more citizen input.
Although the bill called for the two parcels to be of equal value, a federal forestry official told a congressional committee that he was concerned that "the public would not receive fair value" for its land. A formal appraisal has not yet begun. A town official opposed to the swap said other Yavapai Ranch land sold nine years ago for about $2,000 per acre, while some of the prime commercial land near a parcel that the developers will get has brought as much as $120,000 per acre.

I'm not sure the 'Madness of King George II' analogy holds. Dick Cheney's been the Prince Regent for 7 years already.

Actually, I think its more of Cheney in the role of Deputy Führer Melakon, and Bush is John Gill from Patterns of Force.
great episode btw. very instructive.

I believe a small group of people with enough integrity can change the world for the better. After all a small group of people with absolutely no integrity have proven theu can change it for the worse. The thing is these people have created a lot more adversaries than they expected to.

i guess hillary's position is 'it ain't over til it's over'. she came close and it must be difficult to end it after all the effort.
xoites (One White Vote for Obama) defends Constitution @ 16:
Don't buy it. The small group of people that have nearly ruined the world in the last 8 years were able to do it because they were giving away trillions of dollars to really bad and already really rich people. When that happens, all of us grumble and some shout but we all continue to eat our shit sandwitch.
When a small group of people try to change the world for the better, that usually means the already very rich people don't get any richer. That fact usually pisses them off very much and they have that small group of people with integrity bought off or knocked off. Usually the second option is cheaper.
tyree @ 19:
So, Tyree. Last week you were for Hillary. Today you are for nobody. Just exactly what is it you are for?

Hillary loaned a bunch of her personal money to her campaign. I'm not exactly sure of the legality of this. Sometimes politicians spend their own money campaigning. I've never heard of a candidate "loaning herself money". It definitely sounds strange. She is staying in the race in the hopes that she can raise enough campaign contributions to pay herself back.

The Madness Of King George
VIEW FROM THE LEFT
Harley Sorensen, Special to SF Gate Monday, July 7, 2003
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Folks, our God-fearing president, George W. Bush, who claims to start every morning on his knees praying, now says that he gets his orders from God Himself.
I kid you not.
I refer you to June 24 article by Arnon Regular in Ha'aretz, an Israeli newspaper. In the last paragraph of that article there's a Bush quote as related by Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas. Here, according to Abbas and Ha'aretz, is what Bush said:
God told me to strike at al Qaida and I struck them, and then he instructed me to strike at Saddam, which I did, and now I am determined to solve the problem in the Middle East. If you can help me I will act, and if not, the elections will come and I will have to focus on them.
That quote doesn't make clear whether God issues direct orders to Bush, or whether they discuss things first. but I'd guess discussions. It's hard to imagine God deciding anything of importance without without first getting input from Bush.
Over the years I've met a handful of people who regularly talk with God, but they usually do so only when they're off their medications.
Those who get instructions directly from the Almighty are twice blessed: They get their orders from the Highest Authority, and the orders are always to do what they would have done anyway.
Getting direct orders from God makes a president's life simpler. If God has spoken, the president doesn't have to observe the niceties with which presidents usually contend, things like getting congressional approval or United Nations agreement.
Bush's very own personal God connection explains a lot of things. Like Bush's disinterest in global warming.
Why should our duly elected president concern himself with global warming when God Himself has said, "Don't worry, be happy"?
Do you see how it works? With God in your corner, it matters not what you do, because God will protect you.
OK, I've been shilly-shallying around here, hesitant to come right out and say what I think, but I'm becoming convinced that our president, the man with his finger on the nuclear trigger, is a bona fide nutcase.
I really do. For him to say God told him to strike al-Qaida is just nutso. For him to say God told him to strike at Saddam, ditto. This guy is not dealing with a full deck.
To me, Bush's sanity has been suspect for a long time. He does so many things that defy logic, like his infamous tax cuts, approved by a thoroughly cowed Congress.
It doesn't make sense to reduce your income while increasing your spending and plunging into massive debt.
His blithe attitude toward the public debt he is creating indicates a failure to grasp reality.
His cavalier entry into two wars within two years, in total disregard of world opinion on the second one, indicates a man who just doesn't care what anyone thinks. Now that his ill-planned schemes in Afghanistan and Iraq are coming apart, I sense a bit of panic in the man.
Bush knew what everyone knew, that our armies could conquer. But he had no idea whether they, or anyone, could maintain a peace in nations as splintered as Afghanistan and Iraq. They can't. They're not trained for that. That's not their mission.
Bush is a good salesman, which is almost certainly why his father's friends chose him to be the front man for the Republican Party. He's a charmer, no doubt of that. Because of his sales ability, he was able to convince most Americans that war with Iraq was a necessity.
But America needs more than a slick salesman to lead the world. We need, at the very least, a man with mental stability. We don't have that with Bush. His rapid rise to power, without truly earning it as most presidents before him have done, has gone to his head.
So what we have in the White House today is a megalomaniac with a messianic complex, a man who believes that he and he alone can resolve the world's problems.
"I am determined to solve the problem in the Middle East," he said. I, I, I, I, I! With Bush it's always "I." In a job that requires great humility, we have an egomaniac.
I don't expect many people to agree with my armchair psychoanalysis of a man I've never met. We don't like to admit that important people are crazy, or even that our relatives are crazy. Typically, we overlook their bizarre behavior until it gets so bizarre we can't ignore it anymore.
So, all I ask is that you pay attention. A man who claims to get orders from God, and who creates world-shaking events on the basis of those "orders," needs watching.

Worst. President. Ever.
DEPARTMENT No
CommentBY Scott Horton
PUBLISHED April 5, 2008
“It would be difficult to identify a President who, facing major international and domestic crises, has failed in both as clearly as President Bush,” concluded one respondent. “His domestic policies,” another noted, “have had the cumulative effect of shoring up a semi-permanent aristocracy of capital that dwarfs the aristocracy of land against which the founding fathers rebelled; of encouraging a mindless retreat from science and rationalism; and of crippling the nation’s economic base.”

Poll: Bush most unpopular in modern history
Submitted by davidswanson on Thu, 2008-05-01 20:54. Media
New poll numbers show bad news for president Bush.
WASHINGTON (CNN) — A new poll suggests that George W. Bush is the most unpopular president in modern American history.
A CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Thursday indicates that 71 percent of the American public disapprove of how Bush his handling his job as president.
"No president has ever had a higher disapproval rating in any CNN or Gallup poll; in fact, this is the first time that any president's disapproval rating has cracked the 70 percent mark," said CNN Polling Director Keating Holland.

109 HISTORIANS RANK BUSH AT THE BOTTOM
7 April 2008
BY ROBERT S McELVAINE
“As far as history goes and all of these quotes about people trying to guess what the history of the Bush administration is going to be, you know, I take great comfort in knowing that they don’t know what they are talking about, because history takes a long time for us to reach.”— George W. Bush, Fox News Sunday, Feb10, 2008
A Pew Research Center poll released last week found that the share of the American public that approves of President George W. Bush has dropped to a new low of 28 percent.
[Edited]
Like a majority of other historians who participated in this poll, my conclusion is that the preponderance of the evidence now indicates that, while this nation has had at least its share of failed presidencies, no previous presidency was as large a failure in so many areas as the current one.

19 Percent Approve of Bush
by David Swanson
February 20, 2008 at 13:56:54
George W. Bush has set a record for unpopularity that may stand for all time: He now has a 19 percent approval rating. And, remember that Cheney has always polled LOWER than Bush. Imagine if the Democrats were to do something we care about (preserving the Constitution) by doing something they care about (winning elections) by forcing John McCain to choose between supporting impeachment and supporting these characters who may soon be less popular than the flu. Remember, Congress moved to impeach Nixon and STILL nobody liked him, but he was more popular than Bush or Cheney: He stayed at around 25 percent through the process. Clinton climbed from about 60 to 65 percent as a reaction to Congress prying into his personal life and attacking him for a non-impeachable offense. Which scenario do YOU think is more like the current one, Clinton's impeachment or Nixon's? Truman's popularity sank as Congress moved to impeach him too, but it never sank as low as Bush's and Cheney's.

George is not mad or crazy or stupid or incompetent. The neo -con policies are wrong, geared to enrich a set oif already wealthy people, and resulting in the conditions that work towards letting "disaster capitalism' bear lots of fruit.
Calling some part of the present Republican leadership crazy or stupid plays into the meme that somehow, with the same policies, same base, same goals things will be different when a new set of republican clones takes office.
This is nonsense, and it must be stomped out. Dont ever let a comment like that go uncorrected. Things will be worse under McSame.
This what the leadership expected, this is the world they were trying to create. They know its not popular, they know the people are eager to them out. Thats why they are using voter suppression, disenfranchisement -voter id, electronic voting, hanging chads etc etc etc.
George is doing what he is told, Cheney is wrong, mean, selfish greedy and a war profiteer, he is more in control than GWBush.
End the meme that George is crazy or stupid.
Proof that loosing one's bearings has nothing to do with age. Bush when asked what does his father think about the job he's doing replied "I listen to a higher father", gets countless people killed on a middle eastern "crusade" for big oil and for Halliburton leaving Americans to pay the price and foot the bill for his many disasterous policy failures. Bush lost his bearings well before his 70's.

gorge carlin for president ! his sthick is right on the money! your politicians are shit! and wouldnt give you the sweat off thier balls if you were dieing of thirst in the desert, they have to be rich , rich to run for president and if anyone points out thier flaws and you dont have anything worth refuteing ther arguement you attack them on thier the posters education, when in doubt fill your mouth with shit and attack, when i say very littles going to change if obama or clintons elected its my opinnion and its just as good as anyones , you go ahead and believe bush is incompatent hes done a bang up job of handing this country back to the corporations and thats all he was supposed to do!
Go Hillary!! You keep in that race until you personally go bankrupt and need bailed out by big pharma and Walmart!! Maybe ol' Rupert Murdick will help ya!! Don't let voters or the Dem leadership stop ya either! Bankrupt them, yourself and the entire party. You are the chosen one. Bill says so, and hey, you know deep down, you would be in this position even if your name wasn't Clinton, and people didn't have this folksy love for your husband. Not sure what they loved about a man that did little that wasn't questionable, but hey, he's far better than Bush and that brings out the nostalgia. I mean he gets ALL the credit for that fake economic boom in the 90's. You know the Enron's of the US where everybody got rich off paper businesses. Ah, those were the days. No way those days would crash to a halt without Bush. No way. (sarcasm off now).
Well, the loyal Bushies strike again:

Apparently a federal arts panel thinks the proposed statue of MLK looks "too confrontational" and they want it changed. Naturally, the head honcho of the MLK memorial, a guy by the name of Harry Johnson, says they'll obediently submit a new design. Unfuckingbelievable. Like it's not bad enough that they picked a Chinese artist over an American or - more appropriately - and African-American artist to do the project, now they'll make the statue in accordance with the loyal bushies demands. Can't have no statues of angry n***ers in the mall, I guess. It would upset those working, hard working white Americans Hillary is always babbling about.
Bill Clinton was really nasty and unclassy when he didn't hesitate to say "How` DARE you! How DARE you!" to a member of his audience who asked him about re-opening a Sept 11 investigation. He could just as easily have said a simple "no". I say to the Clintons now: How YOU! How dare YOU! How DARE you use racism to claim that Obama would not be elected because he is black? Bill, your true colors have emerged and you are a racist after all! You sure fooled us!!
As for a "gracious" exit, you don't know what the word means.
Hillary, there is nothing honest about you. We know all about Whitewater's statute of limitations, pardoning your brother's criminal friends, Travelgate, Johnny Chung, disappearance of Rose Law Firm records, Cattlefutures trading 92. You and your husband are corrupt ill-breds. Go away.

The reality of DHS 'dept of human stupidity' should we expect anything else from the bunch of incompetents,
that are losing two real
genocidal and illegal occupationswars and all the other GWO? and massive federal issued credit card frauds. The people who misplaced $8 billion plus in untraceable cash in Iraq.
The people who want to build a fun theme park in a city suffering civil war and siege and daily artillery attacks.
The people who think a modern large city doesnt need more than 20% of it utilities working 24/7 and that is success !
The people who think five years of genocide and civil war since 'mission accomplished' plus another 100 years conflict equals winning !
The current crop of Republicans (and a few others in DC) really are 'third generational' in the classic sense,
absolute typical example of 3rd gen losers and failed fascists.

damn they are quick today, that webpage or thread got taken down or blocked PDQ.

no need to worry about Bill and Hil, they received $30 million plus in uranium lobbyist fees recently.
supposedly $130 million in total , nice work if you can get it.
NYT article
I've not read one post by any Obama supporter yet that shows any graciousness or class when it comes to the Clintons, none of them, even Chelsea. Name calling is totally accepted and the favorite seems to be racist. What many fail to understand and I can only presume it's because they are either very young and don't know the history of either of them or they are these "new" Democrats and I'm still trying to figure out where they came from.
I've noticed that this Hillary Downfall Hitler video is being pushed and so many find it hilarious. That says a whole lot about who you people really are and it's not flattering. This video is not funny, it's outrageous and disgusting on so many levels.
I'm not a strong Hillary supporter, she was not my choice but between the two I felt that she would be the most capable of sorting out and cleaning up Bush & Cheney's mess. But if that's not to be then I think you Obama supporters are making a huge mistake by continuing the hatefest toward half of the Democratic voters. It just may be they decide to work like hell to give large majorities in the Congress and not vote Obama. He is going to have a hard enough time winning in the General but keep this up and he will be the next McGovern even though he is running against McCrazy. Don't ever be so sure of something, he will need every Democratic vote he can get.
Bluesage @ 130:
If Obama loses, it'll be Clintons fault. I can see it already.
Wow, I guess there is a direct correlation between proof-reading and making sense. In my first paragraph I didn't follow through - I should have said, What you fail to understand is that it will be harder to repair the divide if this hateful rhetoric continues.
Bluesage @ 132:
I understood what you meant.
And I agree.
Mudshark -
Is there any doubt? We will see the end of the Democratic Party if that happens. I've been a Democrat all my life, first voted in 1968 which was a terrible year any way you look at it but this is a new kind of tenor I've not heard or witnessed in our party before. So many shades of republicanism in this "new" Democrat.
mystic @ 125
Maybe you don't realize that you are on a more progressive site and when you link to freerepublic to make your point and back up your nasty rhetoric it only makes you look foolish. Maybe you would feel more comfortable over at Malkins site or with your buddies at freerepublic. Facts be damned there.
Speaking of facts...the story that McCant is responsible for the USS Forrestal fire is simply BS and worthy of thug tactics. They don't park jets with engine exhaust directed at anything that goes boom. Not that I'm saying he hasn't done some lethal shit, just keeping it real.
Bluesage @ 132:
Which hateful rhetoric are you referring to? The one that Hillary keeps doing to the Democratic nominee? She has lost and yet she is out there saying Obama can't win. Will THAT be easy to repair?
Janet -
I suggest you read some of the hateful rhetoric on many of the so-called progressive sites and then get back to me. Or you could just keep your head in the sand and ignore the reality here.
I think the most important thing is to win in Nov. but many, many Democrats have been turned off because of the rhetoric against the Clintons on blogs and on TV. I think it's just very dangerous to assume that Obama will win in Nov. because his supporters want him to. About half of the Democrats have voted for Hillary in this primary and you will need those voters in Nov.
Ron @ 17:
wow!
Bluesage @ 138:
Clinton is telling me that i won't vote for Obama. Why? Because i am white.
She is a racist who has finally come out of the closet.
Some emergency room services are able to extract heads from asses. I suggest you shop around.
Bluesage @ 138:
So you are saying that we need the half of the Hillary voters to win. I agree with that. Then why are you accepting Hillary's loud proclamations to her supporters that Obama can't win? Obama IS the nominee. Who is doing the damage to the party here? She needs to STFU.
personaly i find it rediculas that obama voters think they will take the whitehouse without us who support clinton , you delude yourselves to think your insults or snide remarks will get you anywhere with us, but enjoy the fatasy while you can! let the insults commence !
tyree @ 142:
Yesterday and the day before you said you did not support Clinton.
xoites (One White Vote for Obama) defends Constitution @ 143:
no xoites as useual you missread my posts i said thiers not a dimes worth of difference between them , clintons got my vote like it or not! but you enjoy the limelite while you can!
tyree @ 144:
No difference except he is black, i guess.
tyree @ 142:
Dammit tyree, I never said we don't need those voters. I am just pointing out that Hillary apparently doesn't care that the Democrat nominee needs them. SHE is telling them they won't vote for Obama. You would be having a fit it Obama was saying the same thing. Instead he is gracious and even congratulates her on her wins which she does not reciprocate. I was sure that you were sick of the lies and bullshit we've had under bush for the last 8 years but now you are supporting someone that acts just like them. What gives? What is the explanation for the mindset of her supporters, who think she is best for the country, to vote for McCain? To me, that says they care not one whit about the country.
xoites (One White Vote for Obama) defends Constitution @ 145:
are you insenuating im a racist? it wasnt long ago when edwards was bumped out you were ready to throw in the towel said neither clinton or obama was worth your vote you were giveing up on this blog and politics, so now your back because thiers nothing else to do with your computer at least im honest ,i stayed!
Janet @ 146:
i have given my position on why i support clinton untill its comeing out my ears ill not keep repeating it, respectfully!
well i guess this threads done for , tyree had his say ! tsk tsk
