Oregon and Kentucky Primary Thread

Chris Cillizza:

The presidential primaries head to Kentucky and Oregon today, with Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (N.Y.) expected to claim the former and Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.) the latter.

Polls suggest Clinton will win in a blowout in Kentucky while Obama may find himself in a slightly more competitive contest in Oregon. (If you haven't bookmarked pollster.com yet, do it today. You'll thank us in the fall.)

They've called KY with a 1% split and only 13% reporting????

It's fascinating how Obama won Kansas and yet lost Kentucky. Are the 2 states really that different in terms of demographics? Months ago, I was hoping Obama could win Kentucky.

I think the split in Kentucky is not as wide as they had thought. it would be.

Oh boy here we go again.

Right now Obama is within 5% in KY which is surprising considering the polling had Clinton ahead by almost 30 points. It's not like a Dem is going to carry the state in the fall.

Have Matthews/Olbermann told Hillary to drop out yet? At work....no TV.

KKKentucky!!!!!!!!!

They can call KY early based on polling, but Bush is president despite polling that indicated that he lost? What. Ever.

Let's just be sure that McCain is not president in '09. Change? New direction? Hell, just stepping away from pure madness and fear-fueled politics would be a good start, let alone getting a competent person the WH.

How long into her speech tonight before Hillary shills for money? I've got a minute, 2 seconds.

i wish i could have voted tonight, but the state parties are very insecure about who can vote for them. i'd say that's a huge reason why kentucky is still stuck in the 1960s politically.

i will get to vote for him in november though, so that's good.

what i find disturbing is that ky-3/jefferson county is only barely favoring clinton. this is where you find your latte sipping liberals (anyone who has been down bardstown road and been in the highlands can attest to that), your college votes (university of louisville and bellermine university), and your black vote (most of the state's black people live here). and obama is barely in front of clinton. not good.

unfortunately most of the hicks out in the state would vote for a dead rabid dog for dogcatcher instead of barack obama.

and by the way, that's not a joke.

Nah, almost all of Louisvilles votes are in and that has 17% of the pop. and all of the black pop. she is carrying the other counties and a lot by 50-60%. once the votes come in, it'll be a large margin.

Oh well. I did my part and voted for Obama today.

Not to sound too terribly ignert, but does any of this matter anymore? I thought Obama pretty much had it in the bag.

whoops. i meant barely favoring obama

Very interesting, Obama is currently winning the two largest populated counties:

http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2008/primaries/results/county/#KYDEMMAPprimary

I'm sure if Hillary wins Oregon by 40 points tomorrow the MSM will proclaim it a great victory for Obama.

You know how Democrats regard Nader. If Hillary blows this for Obama the blowback will be tremendous.

Oh, dearie, they never "TELL" her to drop out...they just ask the question "Should she..." or "WHEN will she"...over and over and have been for months now...don't want to believe her when she says she'll go all the way through the process of the primaries...NO STORY THERE!!! Her persistence is getting in the way of their coronation...poor babies...sadly for the Kennedy family (but happily for our media) there is now another FOCUS for the 24/7 news cycles for a bit...you know, between primaries...cause GOD KNOWS there is nothing else going on in the country/world!!! You'd better believe that Rove/McCain/REPUGS will still find a way to hold on in November if the STUPIDITY continues...and it will....

Thanks Hillary for putting your personal ambiition before your country and forcing Obama to spend cash on you instead of focusing on McCain for November. We can see now how much you actually respect the Democratic party.

Does anybody think Pat Buchanan is a delusional as I do? Just asking.

she isn't even in office yet and spending more than she is TAKING IN!!!!!

Why do you hate women?

*sarcasm*

McCain has 74% of the vote. Which is to say, 26% of Kentuckians would rather wipe their ass with their ballot than vote for J-Mac.

She's respect the Dem party so much she wants to give it the ultimate gift, herself as the presidential candidate! (sarc)

Come on now hillary! YOU can't win and for you to float around like madam butterfly telling you little story of you being first via cheating surely makes you a crazy woman. Of course the race is close hillary this is why we have primaries and caucuses. But atlas, you are working overtime for nothing but your own tired ego.

Another thing hill, please for our sake stop the repug references, this is not us.

Why should Obama give hillary shit?

hehehe... you said blow... hurrrr

i would also like to point out for our national people, that dubya's favorite congresswoman anne north(r)up won her primary in convincing fashion and will take on true progressive john yarmuth in november.

you think some of clinton's attacks on obama were bad? now we will get a doubleshot of north(r)up AND chinless lipless obstructionist mitch mcconnell ads hitting "librul" john yarmuth and "librul" barack obama all election season long. maybe even both in the same ads. oh yeah, expect mitch to win in november by a comfortable margin. chuck schumer boned us all out of a real progressive who could have won in andrew horne, and the dem that will be up against him will be multiple time loser and hundreds of thousands of dollar republican candidate campaign contributer (and endorcer of republican and future governor ernie fletcher in 2003 when he lost the gubanatorial primary) bruce lundsford. thank you charles for fucking over the country AND us here in kentucky.

Interesting, obviously right wing trollery is a symptom of the deep mental retardation which usually accompanies those conceived from inbreeding.

Hillary has HALF the Dem votes wrapped up. Obama won't win without them.

Tell her that. Basic math.

From now on, when a team wins the World Series in the sixth game of the series, they should play the seventh, just in case the entire winning team tests positive for steroids or something.

See you later. Obviously there is no reasoning with Obamamaniacs.

Enjoy 4 years of McCain then.

"Seven in 10 whites overall backed Clinton in Kentucky, including about three quarters of those who have not completed college. That made Tuesday's contest one of her stronger performances yet with those blue-collar white voters — little surprise considering Kentucky has one of the country's highest proportions of people who are not college graduates.

In addition, only about four in 10 working-class whites in Kentucky said they would vote for Obama in a matchup with John McCain in the general election. About an equal number said they would support the Republican, and the rest said they would not vote."

Kentuckians are surely bigoted and I can say that knowing they will not read this. Can you imagine our country run by their moronic choices.

If we are so concerned about basic math, then it is very simple: Kerry got more votes than Hillary. Ergo it would make more sense for Obama to appeal to those who voted for Kerry.

Since you get to blur the difference between primaries and future general elections. I suppose we can play the same game, so I will blur the difference between primaries and past elections.

Back when Hillary said that she and McCain bring a lifetime of experience to the office and when Bill said that Hillary and McCain were patriots and loved their county, that's when I decided that Bill and Hillary thought more of McCain than they did of Obama and that's where they lost me for good.

Yeah, if by hook or crook she gets the nomination, I will vote for her but just because I will vote for her doesn't mean I feel the sort of respect for her that I would like to feel.

During Clinton's time in the white house my good friend and I had such an argument about Hillary that our friendship was destroyed. I was defending Hillary with everything in me. When I started hearing that she might run for pres. this year, I was so excited. But as her campaign got into full gear, she lost me. She became someone I didn't like and said things I felt weren't sincere. I think if she had directed her campaign from her heart instead of allowing Bill and others to try to define her, she might have had a much better chance.

Agreed. I was hoping when it came down to Hillary and Obama that this country was beginning to show some progress. Maybe we were going to look past issues like a candidate's gender, race and religious affiliation and actually look at ISSUES for a change. What a great fantasy. Now we're back to the same stuff all over again. Disappointing to say the least.

I think there is room in most Americans lives for entertainment and serious business. Yeah it's sad as hell that more people are invested in Idol programs than political issues, but that does not preclude some from being sincerely interested in the presidential race and also being able to kick back and watch something on tv just for fun and relaxation. For many, if they did not have a source of escape, they would be losing their minds. Everything in moderation is healthy.

So after tonight we will have another tie in a race that's already been won. How wonderful.

I just had an idea. Clinton is just staying in just in case something happens to Obama. That is the only reasonable reason for her to keep going.

Hey...I've got an idea. How about every time C&L posts about a primary battle, we all take sides and insult each other and the two Democratic contenders. Can you hear the Republicans laughing?

they didn't.

At the risk of restating the obvious... given the state of the delegate numbers now, Hillary's only chance is to convince the Supers that she is the more electable of the two candidates.

And folks on the boards seem to perpetuate this "electability" issue to the exclusion of most others. It's incredibly tempting, I realize, as infogeeks LOVE to slice the poll numbers and projections and statistics that seem most compelling to them (or the ones that favor the choice they already have in their heads), and declare that anyone who has come to different conclusions than they have are crazy or narcissists or cultists, and everything devolves into a flamewar no more productive than crunching endless sports numbers to back up why your local sports team is DEFINITELY going to win the championship.

But what if we come at this from the perspective that EITHER CANDIDATE COULD WIN THIS FOR US? If BOTH candidates are electable, perhaps by different margins for different voters in different demographics, doesn't that change the discussion? We are in a time and place in history where if EITHER of these candidates can't beat McCain, we as Americans pretty much deserve what we get.

And I realize that it's more important to have *A* Democrat in the White House than having "the PERFECT one for you" there. A lot of people truly honestly wanted Ralph Nader to be president, but would have been much happier with Gore than Bush (especially in retrospect), but 2008 is a MUCH more sober world than 2000.

If we recognized that BOTH could win, couldn't we for even a few minutes shift the discussion towards what ought to be REAL presidential qualifications: Who will be able to bring big-picture leadership, consensus, long-term thinking, compassion, justice, and sanity to this world that sees itself as inexorably divided?

And if perspectives on the issues were as serious as the difference between either of them and McCain, that would be one thing, but between Clinton & Obama, the particulars of the supposedly divisive issues, both large and small, don't REALLY matter all that much. Is Hillary's support of (or Barack's condemnation of) an imaginary gas tax holiday the year before they'd take office going to make any kind of difference? Are even the minor differences between their imagined health care plans going to look any different once they're written up as a bill and shoved through the meat-grinder of both houses of the Senate?

Government - especially the nuts and bolts parts of it, is not done by one person. Yes, that person should have intelligence, good judgment, diplomacy, and all the things I mentioned above, but it's only ONE PART. A president can set the tone for government and help shape priorities, but they also need to get Congress on board, to get Reps on board, to get the American people on board,to get the REST OF THE WORLD on board. I personally feel that Barack Obama has the best ability to do that, but I'd be happy to be convinced that Hillary Clinton could do better. And NEITHER of them is crazy. And EITHER of them would do a comparably great job.

But in a case when you've got the brass ring in your hand - the perfect storm of Democratic opportunity, why NOT put forth the person you think would be the BEST at the job, instead of giving into fear and backing the person you're less afraid will lose based on certain statistics? We're not talking about Dennis Kucinich here, people.

94 - Its called democracy and it nothing but patriotic but to disagree...when we have a nominee will coalese and bash mcsame ...until june 3rd ..its healthy to debate

Just an observation that 100 times more Americans will be paying attention to the American Idol finals tonight than the results of the contests in Kentucky and Oregon, and probably more Americans yet will dial an 800 number tonight and cast a ballot for the next American Idol than cast votes in the last 10 primaries. Scary, isn't it?

That's because there are tons of kids with tons of change.

All the talking heads are hinting around it but are afraid to actually say it. I don't blame them because it's all too scary. Everybody knows what the "cataclysmic event" might be that would hand Hillary the nomination.

As long as there's a one in a hundred-trillion chance that a meteor will fall on Obama's house sometime between now and the nomination, she's in the race. Welcome to Clinton-world.

LA, you and I have been very cordial as long as I have been posting on this site. You know I respect your opinion highly, as I try to everyone. Now, with that said, I realize some Obama supporters are a little over the top. But when Hillary supporters keep saying that over and over, it doesn't make any sense. And yet they claim to be Dem party faithful. That's the reality I see. I also hear Hillary supporters saying no way Obama can win without her supporters. True. But if Hillary supporters get their way and she wins, she can't win an election without Obama supporters, so I don't understand any of this.

I mean we have to be realistic at this point. We are swimming in unchartered waters at this point with a Black man going up against a White woman. Like Eugene Robinson said on MSNBC, there is no DATABASE of information that will tell you who will do what in November because this has NEVER happened before at least on the national level.

At this point, we have to automatically assume that the white people in Appalachia will not vote for Obama under any circumstances. He either has to win in states like Iowa, New Hampshire, Virginia, Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada and North Carolina to make up the difference or just forget about it.

On the flip side, at this point, Blacks and youths will not turn out for Hillary in November if she was somehow given the nomination. She will lose any state with more than 15% Black vote by 2 or 3 points because of this decreased turn out.

In November, Obama will either win big or lose big, Hillary will either win small or lose small. Looking at the margins (and your actual rules), Obama is the candidate and the Democrats have to live and die with him.

I love and support Obama on his principles, ideas, and personality.

For the first time, I feel he stands an equal chance of winning in November as he does to loose.
For the first time, I pragmatically feel Clinton is no longer competing for a nomination, but is damaging her party.

I would agree. Obama will not win Appalachia because racism is so deep it even infiltrates the Democratic party.
It is not the economy, Rev. Wright, the war or a gas tax holiday. He will lose because he is BLACK. It's sad but true
He will need to pick up other parts of the country that can think objectively. The brass of the Democratic party and the educated majority is solidly behind Obama.

It just seems plain silly to me, the entire fight. Why in the world would Democratic Party members vote overwhelmingly for a candidate at this point in time who even admits the chances of her winning are slim at the least? Do party members not want to win the election? Why wouldn't everyone jump behind the leader (or presumed leader) now instead of acting like the two candidates are from completely different parties? This whole process is too depressing. This weekend my sister started spouting off about politics. She's a semi reactionary Catholic. She voted for Perot. She hates Bush. She thinks the Republicans answer to everything is to raise taxes. and here's a real winner: "if we elect the first black president, the blacks will be rioting in the streets for respirations."

It's simple to me....they have this mob "US AGAINST THE WORLD" mentality that Hillary and her surrogates are instigating like hell. She's not running as a Democrat, she's running as a Clinton and you're either with them or against them. Anyone who is against them is a sexist, elitist, member of the MSM, or is apart of the right-wing conspiracy. People are calling out Barack for dismissing West Virginia and Kentucky. Does anyone recall when Hillary dismissed 12 straight contests and lost 12 straight times by large margins which put her in this situation in the first place? I remember scratching my head when she wouldn't put up ANY fight in Wisconsin to stop Obama's momentum and she waited till like Sunday before the election to come here. Instead of admitting that was a strategic blunder, she instead started telling people in Ohio and Pennsylvania that states she lost don't matter because they're too Black, too small, too elite, or un-Democratic with a caucus system. And that real Americans that matter are those who vote for her so they should vote for her regardless of the facts and regardless of their best interests.

Sound familiar?

Damn right! Karl Rove did this in 2000 and 2004 by instigating a mob mentality based around the fear of "take your pick!" Hillary is creating the extreme right-wing of the Democratic Party and it has NOTHING to do with anything but fulfilling her own ego.

gussmith @ 46:

I would rather have our moronic choices than the elitist moron the democrats offered up in 04, or Billy Jeffs hand picked VP, who should have won by a landslide over dumb ol Dubya. One question, Are all the states the Obama lost, full of Klansman, or just Kentucky?

The assertion that Clinton has failed to connect with the better educated demographic is faulty. She has done quite well with educated women. She has done better with working class groups, no doubt, because they feel she better represents their interests. She is, after all, slightly to the left of Obama on the political spectrum. I have no doubt that a minority of her supporters may have some racist tendencies but clearly from the posts on this left leaning site some of Obama's supporters are quite misogynistic. Fortunately neither of these obnoxious groups represent any significant portion of the electorate. Theoretically the super delegates could overturn Obama's narrow lead. Hopefully they will not as this would likely be disastrous in November. That being said she is making an extremely good argument for being the VP on the ticket. That doesn't stop people from making the argument that all her supporters are toothless hillbillies. An argument, I might add, that is unlikely to persuade them that they should vote for Obama. It is, what are the words I am searching for, extremely stupid and unhelpful. Yes that's it.

That seems (is) way off the mark. That's "horse race" nonsense. Personality punditry. These votes in the borderline states (IN, WV, KY) are more about class than race. There is high unemployment, job loss and mortgage troubles in these areas and Obama's message is not about that. Its about hope and change and partisan transcendance. That doesn't resonate in these places. Hillary is hitting that hard down there and its working. Obama's in big trouble if he doesn't listen to them. They'll simply stay home.

Look, if it takes the white Southerner (Edwards) to get the black northerner (Obama) to pledge to talk about poverty more...There is something really, really wrong.

Obamas turn.

The Oregon results and his speech will turn this back in a positive direction.

This whole Kentucky thing was making me ill

That's what his supporters always fall back on. The "great" oratory...even though its still the economy, stupid.

Better "hope" it works come November.

Obama is inspiring a genereation.

go listen.

his leadership will build brilliant coalitions to make this change and hope reality.

those inbreds think obama is a manchurian candidate

they do because unlike the rest of the world which has progressed into the 21st century, they dont use the internet and are still watching black and white tv

occasionally, they get to a flicker show....just as long as it doesnt interfere with their watching the local spitting competition

I would rather have our moronic choices than the elitist moron the democrats offered up in 04, or Billy Jeffs hand picked VP, who should have won by a landslide over dumb ol Dubya. One question, Are all the states the Obama lost, full of Klansman, or just Kentucky?

no....just ky and wv

are all the states lost by clinton filled with women haters?

I don't get this part Johnny. I know supporters for both candidates say it alot, but please refresh people's memories. What exactly would/does Hillary know about fixing an economy? About the same as Obama does. Very little. Ya, I know, the economy was simply wonderful under Bill, but Hillary is not Bill and this isn't 1996. Economic problems right now are global, and not a helluva lot a Prez can do about it unfortunately.

This whole process is too depressing. This weekend my sister started spouting off about politics. She's a semi reactionary Catholic. She voted for Perot. She hates Bush. She thinks the Republicans answer to everything is to raise taxes. and here's a real winner: "if we elect the first black president, the blacks will be rioting in the streets for respirations."

how do you tell your own sister you think she's a stupid c*nt?

I support Obama 100% but I'm pretty sure McCain will be our next president.

"respirations'??

are blacks having probs breathing?

whites are too

I DEMAND MY RESPIRATIONS!!!!!!!!!!

what does being catholic have to do with the fact that your uneducated sister is a racist?

i thought jesus taught love and compassion

Barry CANNOT win the general, yet the cultists will just keep dreaming, all the way to a McCain victory.

What a shame.

McCain is destroying Obama on national security.

She would beat him on national security and the economy.

If the supers want to win this time, they should go with Clinton. Period.

you mean the mccain who thinks that talking with one's enemy is appeasment?

the mccain who doesnt know the dif between suni and shiite?

the mccain who lied about wearing a bullet proof jacket and being escorted around a bagdad shopping area?

the mccain who said we must sit down with hamas...but now says that would be appeasment?

that mccain?

yup...he sure is kicking ass

12 more minutes before they call Oregon for Obama.

I do understand Hillary wanting to go through the motions of keeping her candidacy alive until all the states have voted. I just hope she has the good graces to THEN bow out gracefully and in a way that will help unite the party. Not so sure she will but...

Another thing, what is the talk I've heard calling Kentucky a "swing state"? Kentucky is as solid a repug state as there is (even Clinton trails McCain by 12 points there head to head). The proof is in the answers people gave to the question of whether or not race matters.

getalife is a well known rethug on various sites around the web. I imagine he does want Clinton to be nominated. After all, he is following Rush's orders.

Obama's speech attacking John McSame was great.
Hopefully the Rubes that keep falling for the old McSame political tricks with learn.

Right on time. MSNBC calls Oregon for OBAMA!!

Yeah, just like we hold a BIGGER key to your princess inevitable's winning in Nov.
So what now, we just hold back and let McCain win? Real smart.....NOT!
Here's a novel idea! Why don't we all back the WINNER of our nominating process?
Oh wait, that would mean you'd have to put aside your Ferraro like bitterness and go for Obama. You'd rather see the country go down the McCain toilet than do that huh?
