YouTube responds to Lieberman's calls for censorship: Thanks, but no thanks

Last week, Senator Joe Lieberman (I-CT) contacted us to voice his concerns about seeing videos from several Islamic terrorist organizations on YouTube. We appreciated our dialogue with Senator Lieberman and his staff and wanted to explain to the YouTube community how we responded to his concerns.
Senator Lieberman stated his belief, in a letter sent today, that all videos mentioning or featuring these groups should be removed from YouTube -- even legal nonviolent or non-hate speech videos. While we respect and understand his views, YouTube encourages free speech and defends everyone's right to express unpopular points of view. We believe that YouTube is a richer and more relevant platform for users precisely because it hosts a diverse range of views, and rather than stifle debate we allow our users to view all acceptable content and make up their own minds. Of course, users are always free to express their disagreement with a particular video on the site, by leaving comments or their own response video. That debate is healthy.
We appreciate Senator Lieberman alerting us to videos that violated our policies -- and encourage our users to continue to do the same through the flagging tool. And while we disagree with him about the details of our policies, we respect his views and thank him for giving us the chance to respond to his concerns.

The sine qua non of Lieberman's position appears to be quite simple: "I'm in favor of the right to express speech with which I agree."
Of course, that is not freedom of speech. If you believe in the right of freedom of speech, then you believe in the right of others to express views you oppose. If not, then you don't believe in freedom of speech.
That a U.S. Senator fails to grasp such an elementary principle of the enlightenment is sad and ominous.

If they're training their guns on youtube, we KNOW they're seriously worried about the election and the role youtube is going to play in the coming months. It's predictable that LIE-berman would be out front with this.
This is a baby step in the direction of censoring content generally. They're flexing their muscles to see what will happen. They certainly know that Obama has the youth vote locked up. Youtube is a critically important resource for the youth demographic. They want to see if there's a way for them to have an impact here.
Another tack to simply work to discredit youtube with charges that content is unreliable OR dangerous OR the devil's playground. BUT - to do this, they have to draw media attention to their complaints, which will certainly increase youtube viewership. That would effectively defeat their purpose.
Re-PIG-lics own most other media and can control the message - what the public hears and does not hear. It absolutely drives them crazy that they don't have this power over the internet.
They'll do what they can to stifle internet influence, because they know they can't compete there. On the internet they'd have to compete with truth and reality and they automatically lose in those arenas. And let's face it - they lose right off the bat because of their inherent lack of creative abilities as well.

There is a difference between restricting unprotected hate speech and protected first amendment speech. If Joe Lieberman feels these video pose a danger to National Security he should file an injunction with the Court. BUT there is a good reason why Senator Lieberman is merely asking YouTube and not seeking an injunction or legislation to ban these videos.
He knows that an attempt by Congress to prevent publication or broadcast of protected non-hate speech would be an unconstitional restraint on free speech in violation of the first amendment. He doesn't want the court to review his beliefs that these videos should be censored because they'd disagree and he'd have to admit he beliefs went too far...unconstitutional.

What ticks me off is that people are trying to say that Chuck Hagel is nothing more than the Republicans version of Joe Lieberman. That's very insulting and offensive being that Hagel has taken a principled position on the war based on his war experience. Lieberman is just being a buffoon because he's still mad that he had to fight for his Senate seat. Outside of foreign military engagements, Hagel is still the most Conservative Republican in Congress based on his voting record. If these videos he's talking about are hate speech, getting them exposure will just reveal them for the trash they are (and generally, the community will generally police itself with ratings, comments and flagging). If -- oh, heaven forbid! -- there are videos that have enlightening information (like the conditions under which Palestinians, Iraqis and Afghanis are living... or truthful insights into Iranian and Pakistani society) then they deserve to be seen.

I do not know what your issues are with Mr. Amato's site specifically, but I don't think it has much to do with my criticisms of Joe Lieberman miss. I will say that in my opinion, democratic principles practiced in the public domain does not necessarily track to privately owned enterprises. Sometimes maybe, most times, probably not... That whole privacy rights thing at work here and probably the main reason there are such things as the public domain symultaneously existing along side of private enterprise and private property in the same culture...
Joe Lieberman operates in the public domain as a public political figure.. John Amato operates a private site devoted to a particular political view, but it is not in and of itself an example of the public domain anymore than my living room is, even though I open it up to my friends and their friends with their myriad opinions and points of view to come by and hang out once in awhile... I don't censor them, but if they piss me off, I do tell them to get the hell out. Doesn't mean I won't let them come around again next week.. OK, I'm done discussing this issue with you. The pompous ass is back at it. Yet only a few years ago, Holy Joe in a most hateful way cheered the bombing of civilian targets.
In a memorable exchange on NBC's Meet the Press on April 25, 1999, at the height of NATO's onslaught on Yugoslavia, Pat Buchanan questioned Lieberman on the bombing of CIVILIAN targets in Serbia.
Lieberman had no answer other than to urge US escalation: "I hope the air campaign, even if it does not convince Milosevic to order his troops out of Kosovo, will so devastate his economy, which it's doing now, so ruin the lives of his people, that they will rise up and throw him out.
I guess Joe isn't that skilled in international law. Terrorizing civilians, destroying their economy, ruining their lives so as to get them to change their government is a war crime. That’s the Lieberman approach to foreign policy.
Mister Lieberman should stick to his job as Johnny Mac's "bearings inspector" so that way the most we need ever hear from him is the occasional, ecstatic "mmph"
Joe Maoman wants to decide who the " terrorists " are or who the bad guys are and I suspect his main concern is ANY, ANY criticism of Israel or U.S. foreign policy .
It's all about controlling the message and making sure there aren't any opposing opinions that contradict the daily propaganda coming from the government and the neocons or Israeli Firsters .
If we censor YouTube, can we in turn censor Lieberman? Cut his mic permanently. (Nothing violent there, jsut we never hear him speak again. Imagine...)

Excellent points Jack. "Keep a lid on it." I am anti-censorship myself; very strongly so, but, "in my house", I ask folks to be respectful. I say all kinds of not-so-nice-things to all kinds of people, here. It's all a matter of how you do it.
The tone of this letter is way more respectful than Lieberman deserves or has earned.

Thanks, I too am like you as regards criticizing public politicians when they are obviously screwing up and deserve to hear that.. And I agree with your perspective on censorship. It really is all in how you phrase a critique.. Perhaps if Susan had made her points without laying into the site itself she wouldn't have had this issue come up to begin with.. Hard to tell, I never actually saw any of her posts to know what her beef was.. Really I wouldn't even have got involved in this particular chat.. (seems a little strange on this Lieberman thread) but this poster chose to use a part of one of my posts to browbeat Amato and this site.. I wasn't too crazy about that so I chose to enlighten her as to my purpose.... I think the point is government censorship. People sensor every aspect of their lives in the choices they make. That's totally different from the government telling them what those choices are going to be.
