Obama Campaign Setting Up Rapid-Reponse Team To Combat Viral Internet Smears
This is very encouraging news, despite the fact that it's sad that it's even necessary.
Barack Obama is recruiting senior staff to a new unit which will combat virulent rumour campaigns on the internet that threaten to cost him votes in the presidential election against John McCain.
The unit is part of a huge expansion of Obama's campaign team as he shifts from the Democratic nomination race to the campaign for November's election.
The Obama campaign's online presence has been absolutely remarkable, so it's no surprise that they are ahead of the curve on this. They astutely recognize how effective these despicable smears can be and are gearing themselves up to tackle them head on. The message this time around is pretty clear: The Democratic nominee will not be swiftboated.

There has to be a way to track down the source. If the source is exposed, then that should slow down the smears. But response and counterattack shouldn't be hard. I think that once the smear merchants learn that they will be exposed, and the far worse deeds of the Republicans brought to light, every time they go after Obama, they will stop. So far, Obama has done a good job of responding, but it will take all of us to respond with a blitz.
Even so, the extreme right wins when the smears become the news. The LA Times had a front page story about attacks on Michelle Obama, but has yet to even mention the recent articles impeachement!
Very pathetic indeed that they are going after Michelle Obama. Such a lady and will just be a wonderful First Lady too.

I think Obama's team have learned from last election of 2004,when John Kerry was attacked daily but with no response from his side...and all allegations and lies against him were very effective in helping Bush getting re elected.

There should be some thought-out inquiries about what McCain did there in the Hanoi Hilton. Since McCain put it out there in his ads, it should be investigated. And if the folks really want to cause some stir in the "national discussion", they should do this by questioning what is the true meaning of being a hero and how it has been distorted during the Bush years.
By forcing this issue into the MSM, McCain would either have to continue to lie or release the truth--especially on whether he is truly fit to be CIC. His service record (and grades) should be released--including psychiatric records.

Oh yes quite profusely, Andy. When John McCain opened that door, he in essence unleashed a vunerability. And if he is willing to exploit his service record, he should put his money where his mouth is--service record, psychiatric record, warts and all.
Now, this does not meaning swift-boating (the making up of an outrageous lie and using it to undermine a campaign), because I know that there are some in the military who are very sensitive to that.
What I mean running a few well placed ads which put out some questions about his service--asking whether he is even qualified to be leader of the free world, if not CIC of the military. Now that is a legitimate question--especially when there have been other folks in the military who have openly questioned his demeanor and mental health. It's time to drag that out in terms of fisticuffs if they even start in on the Dem nominee.
If he is as honorable as they say, he should be able to prove it. But if there are some problems, then we should start a "national conversation" about it--since the American culture is so caught up on the military.

Sooooo.........right wing crazoids with obsessive compulsive tendencies may be drawn to smear ads. However, they will be challenged to get their act together to make it to the correct voting both on election day!
I am not at all worried. I have some small faith in the moxie of most Americans!!!

Unlike John Kerry in 2004, Obama seems to understand how dirty the Republicans play. They're quite good at using the Internet to spread vicious lies and rumors, like the one about him being Muslim. The GOP tries to muddy the water and sow seeds of doubt with their lies because that's all they have, and they know just how gullible Americans are.
I just noticed the Obama campaing ad link (hard to notice ads with all these excellent posts!) but I went and signed up there, then with a link asking for my ideas (awww....now there's a novel irony), so hey...I did so. If you haven't checked it out or joined, please do - you who are Obama supporters. Here's what I sent Obama (or whoever sees it, which probably will never actually be him but hey...maybe they do messages?) and wondered what some of you would say to him...

Be warned, it's a bold ballsy idea...but if you're about change, REAL change, then your main priority as our president should be to clean house...hold the criminals accountable, the liars, the thieves, the cons, the hacks - the current administration have broken countless laws - inlcuding comlicity in 9-11 - and they NEED to be in prison, and EVERYONE knows this. If you become president of the US, and disregard our voices on holding officials and representatives accountable for their crimes with REAL penalties and not a swat on the butt and a giggle, then you're just another lying politician trying to get elected...but we will see this and remember...
Real change needs to be a priority - sending a message that this corruption will never again be allowed by our officials. It isn't rich America vs poor America - it is corrupt officials and enforcers vs United States citizens, and near total destruction of the United States Constitution. We're putting faith and trust in you.
Make REAL change and watch this country rise from its knees, pull its head out of the sand, embrace factual reality and stand up tall. No more dumbing down, no more media propaganda, no more "attack ad" garbage, no more exploitation of the broken, no more lies as if citizens are comprised of 2 digit IQ drones, no more championing religious myth over science and discovery. Don't cater.
You've shown nothing but integrity and dignity, don't stoop to what they do. Unite us...with genuine hard change.
WE CAN HANDLE IT.
And the simple minded ones who would be aghast at this change wouldn't have voted for you anyway, and aren't going to...but they are not the majority. Please do what you say and make real changes in this country. No pardons!

Obama is also going to need a rapid response legal team to act upon all actionable instances of slander and defamation. He'll need to be able to file lawsuits instantly, in order to obtain cease and desist court orders or, when he succeeds in making his cases, to obtain remedies like court ordered public apologies and retractions. Obama has enough money that he can bankpurt the swiftboaters as they try to defend themselves in court for their wrongdoings. The timely nature of the campaign should allow him to press for immediate decisions from the bench. His record thus far of not indulging in similar behavior means that he would always be going into court with "clean hands"; this would tend to favorably influence any case his team might bring into court.
Obama's IMDb board is overrun with smear... would be nice if more people would come over and balance it out.

For every smear that the McCain camp OR the 527s come out with, Obama's team ought to put out TWO of the many TRUE pieces of dirt about McCain. There's enough stuff out there that can be verified, that they ought to have PLENTY of ammo 'til election day.
most of the swiftboating has been and will be done wit talk radio repetition. email smears may make it all over the place but reading them doesn't sell like hearing it from hannity and limbaugh and co, who reach 50-70 ML with their coordinated GOP bushit.
obama's camp would do better to provide searchable transcripts of the main talk radio blowhards nationally and locally so their supporters can picket and boycott the local talk radio stations that would otherwise spew the lies all over their communities without ever hearing a complaint.
This team will have it's hands full since this campaign will only get uglier. John McCain can't beat Obama on the issues, in looks, or in a debate so he has no choice but to race bait and smear him.

I'm wondering...when Obama was first appraised of his Reverend Jeremiah Wright's virulent smear, spreading the vicious rumour that the American government created AIDS to kill black people, did Obama or anyone else in his Speedy Internet Response Team set up a website to combat it?
Did anyone in Obama's Trinity congregation and constituency run to the 'net to create a website to combat that vicious rumour about the USA when they heard, first hand, Obama's Reverend Jeremiah Wright virulently smear the USA that way?
I didn't see that vicious rumour and smear of the USA addressed on Obama's new website, so I was just wondering...
