Obama Opposes California's Gay Marriage Ban

  A more optimistic sign....

Calitics

In a letter to the Alice B. Toklas LGBT Democratic Club, Sen. Barack Obama stated his opposition to the California constitutional amendment. As far as I know, this is the first official mention of such a position.[..]

Dear Friends,

llmnk you for the opportunity to welcome everyone to the Alice B. Toklas LGBT Democratic Club's Pridc Breakfast and to congratulate you on continuing a legacy of success, stretching back thirty-six years. As one oHhe oldest and most influential LGBT organizations in the country, you have continually rallied to support Democratic candidates and causes, and have fought tirelessly to secure equal rights and opportunities for LGBT Americans in California and throughout the country.

As the Democratic nominee for President, I am proud to join with and support the LGBT community in an effort to set our nation on a course that recognizes LGBT Americans with full equality under the law. That is why I support extending fully equa! rights and benefits to sarncsex couples under both state and federal law. That is why I support rcpealing the Defense of Marriage Act and the "Don't Ask Don't Tell" policy, and the passage of laws to protect LGBT Americans from hate crimcs and employment discrimination. And that is why I oppose the divisive and discriminatory efforts to amend the California Constitution, and similar efforts to amend the U.S. Constitution or those of other states.

For too long. issues of LGBT rights have been exploited by those seeking to divide us. It's time to move beyond polarization and live up to our founding promise of equality by treating all our citizens with dignity and respect. This is no less than a core issue about who we are as Democrats and as Americans.

With his arm upraised like that, I hope he doesn't want to ban ban.

One problem:

A president has nothing to do with state amendments.

OCR problems?

Not official but Schwarzenegger stated his strong opposition on Sunday's _Meet the Press_.

Guess that whole "equal rights" thing doesn't include the 4th amendment, huh Barack?

llmnk you for your comment.

Great going, Barack. In the polls I've seen, gay marriage is at the bottom of American's concerns. Nobody cares anymore like they did in 2004 (but that was exaggerated anyway). Plus, this proves to your base that you aren't going to be as centrist as we think. Great strategy.

Still waiting to hear how he is going to dig the country out of the hole the Bush administration has dug us into the last 7 plus years.

Obama decided that during the general election campaign, he should move to the right on warrantless-wiretapping and move to the left on gay marriage?

well thank you for doing what is obviously right, now what about FISA.

That took political courage knowing the reich wing will use this to energize their bigoted hate base and the Christ-O-fascists. I don't know if people are going to be swayed this time round with a hot button wedge issue that doesn't affect their daily lives to scare and con them into voting for Republicans who have done great damage to the country and whose policies are having an adverse effect on their lives.

And for the record, being a POW does not grant one the right to become president, in case any of you trolls are waiting in the wings.

You mean change the California Constitution now after they've allowed same-sex marriage OR the attempt in the near future (Nov. '08) to amend the Ca. Constitution to dis-allow same-sex marriages? As far as I can tell, it currently is legal to marry someone of the same sex in California. But, if some people have their way, there will be a proposal to make same-sex marriages illegal in California. So which "amendment" are we talking about?

Ho hum, his position on gay marriage has been known for quite awhile. Everything else is up in the air. I guess it all depends on how much hope you can muster.

Eric Jaffa @ 11:

Most Americans do not care if gays get married. It's not a "left" issue....it's quite mainstream.

Not sure of the truth about this. It has been stated he "wet started" his plane which means he let fuel pool before hiting the ignition switch. This causes a bang and a flame to shoot out of the exhaust. This flame burned the bomb in the jet behind him to be burned right off its rack which cause it to fire. McCain was then immeadiately removed from the carrier by helicopter even though he was not injured. If true, daddy was certainly looking out for him.

No human being is going to satisfy everyone all the time, they can't. Sure Senator Obama has taken some stands that I don't agree with, but hell, even my own husband does that. The last thing the ruling class wants is leadership in the WH. The position calls for someone easily manuipulated , delusional and sociopathic. McCain seems to meet this criteria easily. Obama not so obviously but we still have time for him to completely sell his soul.

The Democrats need to expand on this amendment. Currently, it doesn't go far enough. These additions are needed so that the amendment truly reflects the religious point of view.
- "Till death do us part" - ban divorce. Only death will null a marriage.
- "Adultery will be punishable by stoning to death the adulterer" - this is in keeping with the "old testament".

Add these to the amendment and it will be perfect. Just give me that old tyme religion.

One of the things any fence-sitters need to get through their skulls is that this isn't just a personality contest or even a Better Potential President contest (which is no contest, Obama by a mile imo, but that isn't the point I am making here). Voting for McCain is the same as voting for their entire agenda, their view on governance (or lack thereof, the lazy bastards), their values, their goals. Putting a mental cripple like McCain is only the tip of the iceberg: just like The Chimp, he will be the blunt instrument for ramming through at least 4 more years of incompetence, malfeasance and greed with the SCOTUS appointments being only the biggest of several brass rings.

Yeah, BO let us down on FISA. But I have thought for awhile that there are forces at work bigger than any one presidential nominee can face down. The other Dems, progressives and We The People need to get off our duffs and help him or anybody else who wants to do the right thing. We can still fix this.

Don't we as Americans has enough problems? Is the Repug Party so desparate they have to bring up up the subject of gay marriage? People are homeless, two wars, flooding, Constitutional crisis, and this is what they are coming up with to divide us. How low can you go?

While I am very happy that he is saying NO to the referendum to amend the CA state constitution regarding marriage, I still think he needs to revisit his stance on FISA.

Yes, Obama is WAY better than McCrazyCain for US President.

But we still have to pressure Obama that if he is for "change" then he better be consistent with things that concern the greater portion of Americans: FISA.

When you have a 23% approval for bush and Americans tired of the same old, same old politics in Washington, it boggles the mind that he would support FISA so he does not appear weak in defense. Obama has been able to frame issues very well and simple to understand for Americans. He could have said something strong against FISA as he has before that would have differentiated himself from other politicians. He has make many of us lose enthusiasm for him. He still has a chance to redeem himself. I hope he does.

First today when I clicked on comments on the C&L home page I was taken to an ad site. Just now when I clicked on comments on the C&L home page it took me here but there was a little ad floating across the screen asking me if the page was helpful to me. Is there a bug in the soup?

He does have a whole page on "issues" on the website.
I haven't read everything in depth but there are is a long list.

Maybe you should take a peek. He has some of your questions answered.

I'm still not happy with him but I'm willing to be convinced...(though lately he is doing a piss poor job of that) and of course I'll be voting for him since, well, mcCain is simply unacceptable.

Try to move forward, critique where necessary, and it is necessary.
At the top of his website page there is the blurb ofabout believing not just his ability to bring change to washington but believing in your own. To me that says we should hold his fricking feet to the fire.
I only went over there to register my opposition to his FISA position but lately I've been thinking of starting one of the diaries to critique him. A group started over there opposing his position and asking him to reconsider.

Do what you can and reserve the right to just not like him. No one ever said you had to like somebody to support their candidacy, or to agree with everything they've said and done.
I was/am a Clinton supporter and I certainly had criticisms of her.
Further, you don't have to like your President (we have proof) and can still support many of his or her policies.

Just my two cents.

Lord, it is so much more civil over here, thankfully, usually.
;-)
(of course if you don't "adore" him you might be attacked like HuffPo, ugh.)

I wish a reporter would question Obama regarding the various states that have voted for Medical Marijuana rights. Is he for states rights in this regard or is he for the war on drugs and federal agents coming into the states and raiding medical marijuana stores etc.

If anyone knows his position on this one I'd love to hear it.

Bob Barr, Cynthia McKinney and Ralph Nader all support states rights for medical marijuana.

Still waiting to hear how he is going to dig the country out of the hole the Bush administration has dug us into the last 7 plus years.

You'll prob have a long wait on that one LA. Meet the new boss. Same as the old boss.
Like you I've seen far too many elections with "change" as the slogan where actual change after the election was never achieved or aimed for.

FunMe @ 57:

We ALWAYS have to pressure our elected representatives. We need leaders, not saviors. And we need leaders that represent us, not tell us how it is and how it will be. That noise is for the daddy-complex republicans; we thinking adults want to have a say in the events and decisions that effect our lives.

For me, what gets me excited about Obama is not just the man, but the (apparent) movement behind those supporting him, that being the movement of millions of Americans getting off their asses and taking in interest in what the hell our politicians are getting up to. If the momentum keeps rolling, this can be a very exciting time for all of us (even republicans).

He destroyed five aircraft, but I do not think all five were jets.

I understand he may have been responsible for the Forestal disaster in which case he crashed five aircraft and blew up 24 more on the deck of an aircraft carrier. There were also at least 130 dead.

Nice Twain quote in Obama ‘s speech.

“Patriotism is supporting your country all the time, and your government when it deserves it.”

Our government does not deserve it. Our country and our troops do.

Too bad he is for spying on you illegally and for corporate amnesty.

Makes his speech bs.

Here are some real Americans unlike Obama:

“In matters of Power, let no more be heard of confidence in men, but bind him down from mischief by the chains of the Constitution.”

— Thomas Jefferson

“Any time we deny any citizen the full exercise of his constitutional rights, we are weakening our own claim to them”.

— Dwight D. Eisenhower

“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere”.

— Martin Luther King, Jr.

“America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves”.

— Abraham Lincoln

“Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety”.

— Benjamin Franklin

Patriotism.

Love the quotes.
Post them over at his site, send him a message and join up/sign the petitions etc that oppose his stance.

(not saying you haven't of course)
there is a group on his site opposing his stand on FISA. I like that, using the site he built to oppose those on the blogosphere opposing him now working on holding his feet to the fire.

Get a grip.

Firstly, all of those men you quoted had their demons, their problems, their skeletons in closets, and all of them made mistakes throughout their lives. They were not super-powered heroes, and would probably resent being put on pedestals by those who're content to admire instead of act themselves.

No one suggest that these people do not have their own human weaknesses and failings. HUMAN beings after all.
Still good quotes and it would be helpful to understand that Obama is as well and needs to be held accountable.
Don't think it is helpful either for getalife to suggest that Obama is not "a real american".

Hold O's feet to the fire on this Fisa thing is important.

Those who are satisfied with "little change" or the "lesser of two evils" will end up with just that. Politics is fascinating to watch. Especially partisan politics where one party is always better than the other until after elections, then the silence is deafening. If I was American, would I vote for Obama over McFlipFlop? Yep. Would I not complain about anything he says or does? NOPE.

Get used to the stealth McSame, the stealth 'cons, infesting not only this blog, but all others.

The sniping is unmistakable. These pricks want more war, more financial crises, higher healthcare costs, higher gas prices, and incredibly dumb people sitting in the White House. And did I mention a rich wife (born with a silver spoon up her butt) who stole drugs from the org she was working for and became addicted to them? YEAH, we all want MORE of these good old-fashioned republican shit-heads.

Hell, we have a chance to have a Harvard graduate (magna cum laude) and his wife, a Princeton cum laude graduate, in the White House...ain't that a horrifying thought?

Yeah, I think in some corners, that is a horrifying thought. I sure as hell don't understand it. I think some people just want to bitch about everything rather than sincerely look at the differences in the two candidates.

No human being is going to satisfy everyone all the time, they can't. Sure Senator Obama has taken some stands that I don't agree with, but hell, even my own husband does that. You have to weigh what you agree with against what you don't. If you are more in agreement than disagreement, then I think you can go forward from there.

He is going to get the best and the brightest on his team. That is the absolutely critical. He is also going to have to completely 'clean house' of everyone appointed, or hired by Bushco. The type of individuals he needs are ones who can quickly assess the current state of things, help formulate strategy choices, and then take the ball and run with it. These are some of the ideas/suggestions I have.

Vice President Chris Dodd
Secretary of State Hillary
Attorney General John Edwards
Secretary of Defense Wesley Clark
Head of EPA Al Gore
Treasury Robert Rubin
Agriculture or Interior Kathleen Sebelius
HUD Robert Kennedy Jr

This would be a killer core. Each is the type who could land on their feet running, and work independently. With these kind of individuals, a great deal can be accomplished in a short period of time.

And none of them are gong to get elected even if every pothead in the country votes for them. Medical marijuana saved my life, but I'm not gonna risk letting John McCain pick the next two or three Supreme Court Justices. Keep your eye on the prize, please.

Obama seems to be slowly improving on these issues. I will give him some credit. I've been pretty bitter toward him even recently. I'm no stealth neo-con and this is positive for us CA homos but the FISA vote is what I'm calling the Senate out on and Barack Obama is a Senator. He, Feingold and Dodd should rail against such legislation. While I'm glad he backs our right to marry, defends the CA Supreme Court decision and opposes the vote coming to ban gay marriage once again in November I would rather defend the Constitution and not give the executive branch even more tools for undertaking lawlessness. If the Constitution cannot be defended and the 4th amendment honored you might as well ban a lot more than gay marriages in CA! Sometimes the truth will tie you up (like hurt me, I’m so sure!).

Well said. There are a lot of bigger fish to fry than this one little tempest in a teapot. Personally, I don't care what gay people do or don't do, but as far as marriage goes, I'd suggest they just skip that one all together. They don't know when they have it good. As far as I can see they are the last segment of our population immune to the dreaded divorce lawyer. Take it from someone who is going through a divorce right now, gay folks, you want no part of a lifelong contract that can go south on you at the drop of a hat. In fact, I'd support a Constitutional ban on ANY kind of marriage for ANYONE under the age of...oh...say 75? I would bet that if you dug deep enough at the root of the fight to approve gay marriage, the biggest group of supporters right behind gay people would be the divorce lawyers.

Everyone has missed the bigger issue here - yes, Obama is against an amendment banning same-sex marriage - but HE'S ALSO AGAINST GAY MARRIAGE. True, he favors civil unions as an alternative, but still - am I the only one who finds this stand (however good-hearted) a bit disingenuous? Basically he's against something that he's against.

Just wait, he only said that he "supports" actions for equal rights, he never what he'll exactly do. Think of how he "supported" Dodd with the FISA bill. lol

It's still the battle between Good & Evil folks !!!

The GOOD want what God wants and the EVIL love the deception of sin; and so they are given over to things that are not "convenient", and to unnatural affections, women reaching out to women & men to other men for intimacy and now marriage.

"Choose ye whom ye will serve", God declares in Isaiah, and in all of this know that the day to answer to God is only one heart beat away !

And if this isn't enough for you to DECIDE on the lesser of all evil candidate, notice that ABORTION is at the top of the list of "issues", and uniquely enough Obama preaches that a woman has the RIGHT to choose when his very church taught otherwise for twenty years, but McCain on the other hand, stands against abortion.

The "CHOICE" is now YOURS folks !!!

I supported Obama all the way up until he began sucking up to Hillary and then I KNEW, HE IS FOR GAY MARRIAGES, GAY LIFE STYLES, ABORTIONS OF MINORS, AND ALL THE REST. You see, Hillary and Bill are sexually corrupt, he -BILL Clinton, corrupted our White house with Monica Lewinski, he took on blow jobs while he was leading our nation, he is a very sick individual to disregard our highest office. The ones who still support him, no doubt in my mind, are happy to see a man like Bill, it makes them feel better about thier own sicknesses!
Obama, was once sounding like something special, I can vote either way, but now,,,,,,,,,,,no vote for Obama,,,,,,he is not a good family man, he is a sell out! Wait until his girls are in their late teens, and going to the local abortion clinics as young as ten year's old, getting rid of the babies they have inside of them,,,,,,, wait until the girls decide to become lesbians and he has no grandchildren,,,,,,,,, he is no Christian, he is a hypocrite of the highest order, he and his buddies Bill and Hillary and all the rest of the sick corrupt people in San Francisco.
