One aspect of the "Family Values" campaign I've not seen mentioned is the fact that it focusses on the family as the fundamental building block of our society, rather than the individual or the community.

So, protection of the rights of the individual is sacrificed on the altar of Family Values.

And anyone not part of a 2-parent heterosexual nuclear family is excluded from consideration. Singles, widows, widowers, gays, lesbians, unmarried divorcees, orphans ..

And surreptitiously the role of the community is ignored. Throughout its expansion corporate capitalism has replaced community-based cooperative solutions with corporate fee-based solutions. So casting individuals as members of a family rather than members of a Community furthers the Corporate agenda.

The FISA Bill has more than a few bad things buried inside. Kill this Bill and start all over!

The FISA bill---now resting comfortably in a shoebox in Harry Reid's office---contains an odd section (#110 to be precise) that redefines the meaning of "Weapons of Mass Destruction." Said Mcjoan last week:

There's every chance that the immunity provisions in the bill are unconstitutional. But Congress doesn't know because no Judiciary Committee hearings were held to vet that portion of the bill. Nor were any Defense Committee hearings held to vet this WMD provision.

That's what happens when the oversight muscle of Congress becomes so atrophied. They don't even conduct oversight of themselves. And they don't know what they're voting for.

On another note, did anyone watch larry King last night with the CEO from Chevron. He stated that we need to drill here in the US to bring the price of gas down. Then a caller called to ask why gas was so expensive in California. CEO said since Calif has it's own gas supply and was completely independent of other sources was the reason it cost more. That and the highest taxed fuel in the nation. I sat there and looked at my wife and said, this guy just contradicted himself. And no one said a word. Went right over Larry Kings head.
