About that 'equal pay for equal work' pledge....

John McCain hosted an event in Wisconsin today where he touted his support for women’s rights.

This is just madness. If we look at this record — the one women can “count on” — we see the exact opposite of what McCain vowed.

Adam Jentleson explained, “In April, McCain opposed a major Senate bill seeking equal pay for women…. In 2000, McCain opposed an amendment that aimed to ‘provide more effective remedies to victims of discrimination in the payment of wages on the basis of sex.’ In 1985, McCain voted against a study to investigate pay differences among federal employees, and determine whether they were the result of discrimination.”

Indeed, after the ridiculous Supreme Court ruling in Ledbetter, McCain “dismissed the importance of equal pay, saying that women simply need ‘education and training.’”

In other words, McCain was campaigning today on women’s issues, hoping desperately that voters don’t know anything about his record of women’s issues. Once again, McCain is counting on public ignorance to get him through the campaign.

Well, I wouldn't count that factor out yet. I'm in awe of how lazy our news is.

A lot of times though amendments and bills end up having some little added thing in there that the person doesn't want in, so they reject it. And then their opponents are like "see, he hates women and kicks little puppies too"

I don't like McCain, and I'm voting Obama in November. But still....This is a bit much.

Most of the times when senators are rejecting something that's an OBVIOUS yes, then it's because the sponsor of the bill or co-sponsor has put some b.s. self serving thing in there or something. I know I'm not making the most sense here, but hopefully SOMEONE gets what I'm saying.

How about an Ad? McCain's words here, contrasted with his actual voting record? I thought the Dems were going to do quick response.

He is desperate! Poor old sorry senile asshole.

When McCain tells the reporter asking him about it that he doesn't remember the vote and that he'll check into it and get back to them, I hope the reporter can respond by asking "What do you think NOW?" McCain acts like it's normal operating procedure to have to check his own voting record discover his own views.

Well, he's right. THEY haven't done enough.....to enslave us and kill us all off.

And he WILL make sure there is equal pay for equal work and plenty of opportunity...for you to have the worst job you could possibly imagine and slave wages that you could never expect to survive on.

...counting on public ignorance is a good strategy...for mccain....very few people have the ability to put on
their contrarian hat.......if mcBush gets in were toast
the constitution and the middle class will continue to be weakened........this may be the most important election in 50-60 yrs.

McCain... McSame... whatever! He's one of the biggest LOSERS ever.

I say one of because there are soooo many to choose from... GWBu$h, DarthCheney (aka What-a-Dick!), Yoo, Addington, Rove, Gonzalez, Miers... the list goes on and on and on ad nauseum, unfortunately.

Notice that whenever the lying idiots running for office go around spouting these bull shit promises, they never explain precisely how they're going to pull it off.

And besides, everyone knows that if it actually helps humans (we, the people) and potentially hinders corporations, our government moves at a glacial pace. However, if it helps corporations, covers up government crimes, starts wars, or takes away our personal rights and freedoms, they move at the speed of light.

my first impression, when i saw his response to the question about viagra, was that he looked incredibly guilty, and embarrassed, maybe because cindy's been trying to get him to try it, or he has and it doesn't work for him (my vote), but his mind is racing, like, "how did you KNOW?... has cindy been blabbing again? grrr"... before he realized it actually WAS a policy question... duhr...

todd's picture

Can somebody (I'm not trying to be a jerk here) tell me what industries the equal pay issue is the biggest? And then the next question, how does it happen? Does an employer think "gee you are a woman and I don't like you so I will pay you less"?

I guess most jobs that I know of have a starting pay of say $8.00 an hour. Male or female. I have never been to a job or seen one that pays men more than women per hour.

And McCain is probably right...."The American public is, for the most part,
ignorant, and that fact alone will help him come November."

This is an example of what is good about the human condition; the ability to change one's mind after obtaining more facts and different points of view. I daresay that McCain listens to the American people. This characteristic will make him an exemplary president. At least he's not arrogant and critical of the American people. When the dust settles, this should be the dominant question. This is the presidential campaign simplified.

let this kind of crap go unchallenged.

"Once again, McCain is counting on public ignorance to get him through the campaign."

Well, considering the average American voter, this is usually enough to elect just about anyone, so long as you're not a black lesbian atheist.

It would be nice if voters were more educated (read: know the basics of our Constitutional form of government, not necessarily a PhD), but civics is rarely taught in High School that I've noticed and there are too many idiotic things around to distract voters from taking the time to research their candidates.

A couple of proposals,

1. Require a citizenship test to pass High School or get a GED, require a HS education to vote.
2. Allow people to sell their votes each election to people who will actually use them.
3. Take away people's ability to vote if they don't vote five national elections in a row.

Now with the first, I know the critics will say "well, this will disenfranchise stupid people, stupid people should also have the right to vote." OK, and you saw what that got us in 2000, 2002, 2004, and 2006... 'Nuff said!

With the second, people will state that homeless people will sell their votes for a beer or that large corporations will go around buying up votes. Well, assuming we've already knocked out all the stupid people vote with proposal 1, we don't have to worry about too many people selling their votes willy-nilly to large corporations. In any event, large corporations can't vote. But it's hopeful that very few of the remaining eligible voters will sell their votes, and the ones who do are probably smart enough to sell them to someone who is actually going to use them.

With the third proposal, this would serve as a negative incentive to keep people voting. If they were threatened with losing their vote permanently by not voting in 5 consecutive elections, they would probably be more apt to get out there and vote to make sure they keep it. Although I can see one downside to this where if someone sells their votes for four elections and then votes one time, they can keep selling their votes for four years and use it on the fifth. But then, this is just free-marketeering. It might actually be a way for some people to avoid welfare.

Unfortunately, as it stands, all people really go by is whether they have a "D" or an "R" next to their name, as if that somehow means anything anymore...

While sometimes legislators vote against a bill because of earmarks or wording, that is not the case here. McCain obviously has a problem with women. Read his comments regarding his vote against Equal Pay: McCain thinks women should be at home, raising children - not in the workforce. He'll do anything he can to make every woman in America a craven servant of her husband just like Cindy.

McCain thinks women are inferior to men, plain and simple. McCain's public record and personal life are both riddled with examples of his disdain for the fairer sex.

Is "flip-flopping" (a sweet, cutsie pie term for LYING) an official english word yet.

My extreme nauseous condition is growing worse every day over all the bs rhetoric, that fits the "moment" and situation. It's all nothing but talk (constant flip-flopping) on both sides.

no, just his economics advisor and spokesman is arrogant and critical of the american people

he listens to the american people??? he changes his views based upon theirs?? funny, but just a few months ago, this was mccains view on the matter

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lnzqpVWC2-o

so after years of not supporting equal pay acts, just a few months after berating a 14 year old girl (the dude is so old that he is no longer able to discern age from faces), he has now changed his mind??

i dont think so

what i think is, he is a fucking liar who will say anything to get the job he feels is his right to be in

It's times like these I wonder how things would be had the media not entered into a permanent fellate contract with Grampa McCain. Could you imagine the polls if the general public had a clue about his daily gaffes, lies and flip-flops?

For their sake, when the country is destroyed, I hope these "journalists" can look back and feel it was worth ending America to get into a couple of barbecues and be able to sit in the VIP section of the Air Convalescent Express.

Ya know, if he's gonna flip flop on issues like this, imagine what's going to happen if he actually makes it to the White House. All we need is another Dubya, and after listening to McCain speak, I'm starting to think that he and Bush could be brothers.

Don't get me wrong. I really don't like Obama either.

It's too bad Judge Judy isn't running this year. I think she'd make a fantastic leader of the free world...

What Democratic support groups ought to do is take "fair use" clips of McCain saying one thing then underneath scroll all his voting record that belies what he's saying and mount TV ads doing this. Particularly on woman's issues.

"Education and training????" Those unfortunate women in the workforce, used to the kitchen, the wringer washer and the dial phone, raising kids on teevee dinners. Not educated or trained. Not eligible for the workplace till they catch up. No wonder that there's a dispartiy in pay.

There were plenty of highschool and college grads who voted for bush. "Education" had little to do with their choice.

Selling votes would be a disaster through and through for too many reasons to list here.

The third option I like, except it shouldn't be after five elections, it should be after two. The 50% too lazy or apathetic to vote are the reason we only have two parties in this country and a slew of incompetant, corrupt officials.

Indeed, after the ridiculous Supreme Court ruling in Ledbetter, McCain “dismissed the importance of equal pay, saying that women simply need ‘education and training.’”

I have no idea why that statement isn't getting more play even in the liberal circles. That kind of statement is an absolute outrage, because it implies that women are ignorant and unskilled. It is sexism in its purest form, evidence enough of his regard for women. We don't need to hear stories about the foul names he calls his wife to find out he's a sexist. He puts it out there when he talks policy.

Pig.

My hope is that these issues will be brought up during the televised presidential debates in the fall. When (and if) the question is asked "how do you McCain, support women?" he can respond with the b.s. and Obama can respond by listing all the votes and quotes by McCain that prove his true stance. Either that or the Dems will need to get these issues into the press or into ads.
