Heather:

Vincent Bugliosi's opening statements during the House Judiciary Committee hearing on the constitutional limits of executive power.

Heather:

He did one heck of a job of keeping it simple to explain the lies on the WMD's, and why they didn't even matter. What mattered is whether a country is an imminent threat, and the CIA said even with WMD's, Saddam was not.

BREAKING: Senate Republicans Block Oil Speculation Bill.

C&L, I am not writing this to blogwhore, I am putting this here so you can write something about it. You have a much broader audience than we do. The Republicans are screwing us - again. Most obstructionist ever!

Please write something about this! (And if you want to delete this message, please feel free to do so).

Thank you!

The Iraqi invasion qualifies as a war crime on its own, especially when Saddam's "heinous acts" are put into a global perspective, and the resulting chaos unleashed by removing the cornerstone is compared to Saddam's rule. This invasion is a crime on its own, as is Afghanistan for being collective punishment on the Roman model. And unfortunately, Obama may want us out of Iraq, but much more into Afghanistan, where no army has ever defeated Hazaras, Pashtuns, or the other peoples there.

Vincent Bugliosi is a formidable legal presence.

It was fascinating to watch this today.

One of the Republicans, who was trying desperately to shut Bugliosi up, said he was having an aneurysm trying to shut Bugliosi up.

Amazing.

Much easier to dazzle the visitors when you keep them from noticing the man behind the curtain, after all.

Is a sternly written letter next?

I am against capital punishment- and yet I would be happy to see the Texas electric chair put to use in this case.

When it comes to finding out the truth or actually holding hearings the Republicans scuttle about trying to find reasons not to listen.

Aw no Kucinich Clip, :(. Thats ok, tho, Wexler and Bugliosi definatly had good stuff too.

This is gonna sound extremely stupid but, he has a book?

Fein, Bugliosi and Jackson Lee owned this hearing. I also thought Wasserman-Schultz was very strong and would like to hear more from her. It is especially interesting (and scathing for the Bush admin) to note that Bugliosi stated that Bush told Blair if the U.N. did not find WMD's in Iraq that 'painting' an American fighter jet as a U.N. fighter jet to provoke a confrontation would be an alternative. I cannot imagine our president being so devious as to actually PAINT planes to appear as if they are something they are not in order to deceive. What a shame that our children must face this piece of you know what as their leader.

Of course he did. Because a Democratic president getting a blow job and lying about is a far greater crime than a Republican lying the nation into a costly and deadly war. He was probably one the the same Republican hypocrites who voted to impeach the last successful president this country had over an issue that had nothing to do with the affairs of the nation, didn't cost us half trillion dollars and didn't kill countless of innocent people and 4000 of our troops. But at least Halliburton got their no bid government contracts in Iraq and America big oil companies are going back into Iraq to make even more record profits. Mission Accomplished!

Campbell Brown on CNN just declared that the proceedings were a show trial and a waste of taxpayers money. I'm sorry to be rude, but fuck them all to hell. CNN is in serious trouble. To offer up Glenn Beck and Michael Reagan, it's just insane (and I haven't just discovered this, but I'm boiling over).

Wow. For him to actually ridicule the intellect of the American people in this way is disgusting. I really wanted to reach out and 'touch' this rotten excuse for a human being when he declared that people think we went to Iraq for no reason at all. We know exactly what this is about Rabkin. We know about the central Asian pipeline deals (and lack thereof). We know of the Iranian oil bourse. We know what peak oil means. And we know how important it is to protect our dearest friend Israel at all cost. We know about the long term contracts that were signed with KBR and Halliburton (and so many others) long before our declaration of war. This is a corporate invasion of Iraq with military backing. How dare you ridicule the American people and their knowledge of what really happened. You are a traitor. I was so happy to see you embarrass yourself on television today. You looked like an emotionally disabled child.

A waste of tax payers' money?...If you consider justice to be a waste of money, I suppose.

Are we back to using "heck of a job" unironically? I'm really not sure I'm ready for that yet.

Bush signed more death warrants as governor of Texas than any other governor. He's responsible for more deaths many times over than all the the Texas death row inmates whose execution warrants he signed combined. The corrupt conservative ruling elite have a different set of laws for crime and punishment than those they would legislate upon us. There should not be a different set of laws for someone who killed one person in a convenience store robbery and a pro-death penalty president who is responsible for the sensless deaths of hundreds of thousands of innocent people and 4000 Americans. Bugliosi makes this same point on one of the youtube clips.

Bush is untouchable and not done yet. Hear that Iran!

Democrats feint disgust and call for justice of the man they enable with nod & a wink support. Bush asks for tens of millions every few months for his serial murder spree and Pelosi, Reid, Obama, Clinton, Kerry et al sign the check.

If spineless cowardice, pandering and mealy mouth criticism were a capital offense Democrats would be bacon.

Wrong, technically, only Congress has the right to declare war, the President is the commander-in-chief, but can only lead what Congress initiates. So, yes, there is something legally wrong with a president declaring war.

It was a bit stupid for Conyers to hold up the book by Bugliosi like he was on the Letterman show or something...even IF the book is brilliant and he is absolutely right. I don't like the Repubs reducing serious debate and policy to jokes or finding ways to get around the law with doublespeak and I don't particularly like Conyers promo'ing the book like some carney. It was inappropriate IMO.

So was the lifting up of the book by Mr. Bugliosi during an answer he was trying to give and repeating the title of the book. It undermines credibility and that is exactly what we do NOT need for the MSM/RBC and the average voter to utilize as reason why his testimony is "tainted".

Gives us the facts and get on with it. The book sales are unimportant to me. I would have expected more/better from the both of them, but instead, it made it less professional.

That said, it doesn't even come close to the egregious amounts of BS that has been heaped upon our country and the world by the current administration the past 7 years. I am in agreement to everything that was mentioned by Mr. Bugliosi, and I intend on getting a copy of the book as well. (Not because of Mr. Conyers or the ridiculous peddling of the book during the hearing, but because I had heard about long before.)

It's just a shame it gave an air of "circus" to the proceedings.

Perhaps there is nothing morally or legally wrong with Iraq attacking the United States at its' convenience?

If Iran appears to be threatened by the USA....it also has the right to attack. Morally and legally.

Patriot Actor @ 54:

Perhaps there is nothing morally or legally wrong with Iraq attacking the United States at its' convenience?

Which is exactly why Russia should, without a doubt, put nuclear warheads on the island of Cuba. If we are placing a missile defense system in their backyard much to their obvious protest, they have every right to plaster Cuba with nukes that are facing the good old USA. I do believe in the eye for an eye concept in this occasion. We need to stop making enemies in this world.

Are we starting to see now why taking impeachment off the table, despite the universally understood fact that no impeachment would result in a conviction, is a monumental dereliction of fundamental duty to the Republic?

Are we starting to see that this isn't about getting petty revenge on a president we don't like. That's what the CLINTON impeachment was about.

This is about not validating the horrible, horrible, horrendous abuses of constitutional power this president has exercised. Removing him from office is not the only goal...it's not even necessary (hell, at this point, we can do another six months.)

It's about getting the TRUTH on the PUBLIC RECORD...including, as one of the witnesses pointed out, an appropriate DEFENSE for the president.

It's about knowing how we will proceed in the future. It's about recognizing that executive power can be abused by zealous, well-intentioned people. We don't have to brand Bush and Cheney as villains or crooks...they could very well just be fanatics. Doesn't matter.

There MUST BE SOME moment when we collectively say "whatever happens to BushCo, this will not stand..FOR THE FUTURE"

That's what's at stake here. Not getting our jollies at Bush's expense.

If we do nothing, the next president will be able to simply attack any country he wants any time he wants without even asking for permission.

The next president can, on personal authority, confine a US citizen and subject him to burial alive without charge and without even TELLING ANYONE.

The next president can open anyone's mail, read anyone's email, listen in on any phone call and use all of that as evidence in secret tribunals where, EVEN IF YOU ARE FOUND INNOCENT, you may be held indefinitely after your trial.

The only objection we've heard to these (admittedly, even more egregious than Bush) abuses is that "no president WOULD ever do that." Not that s/he couldn't. S/he just...you know...wouldn't.

We are nothing without the rule of law. This isn't about bringing the Bushie's to justice...that will never happen. This is about bringing justice back to US.

I love Bugliosi's passion and perspective. Conyers must be on heavy sedatives. What was that droopy dog cartoon? Bush has the DLC in complete fear. Disgusting.

unfortunately for campbell brown, investigative reporting involves more than thigh spreading.

For all of Bush's saber rattling, if we were to reverse it, would we not "preemptively" strike?

They have far more to fear from us than we ever would them.

And does it not bother the apologists here that we so cavalierly talk about NUKING another country? Enriched uranium will hang around the planet (no, not just the region, think winds and stuff) for BILLIONS of years.

And WE will be the country that fucks up the planet for more generations than we can count. We would in essence doom human civilization.

#56 right with you brother...this is about making sure that this admin. does not set a precedence for illegal activity. We must hold them accountable. I agree that 6 months to impeachment means nothing, but as they stated starting criminal proceedings NOW will ensure that the day he closes the White House door behind him will be the day they cuff him. The offenses warrant the death penalty as stated today before the panel. He is responsible for the murder of more than 1 million people.

Um, the president has no constitutional authority to declare war. That sole duty is granted to the Congress. So, yes, it would be illegal for a president to declare war.

And we have not declared any wars since WWII. That was the last 'war' we were involved in.

Impeaching Chimpy and Cheney simultaneously sends a message, the people wont stand for the criminality.
And its a permanent footnote in the history books even if they weasel their way out of serious consequences for their crimes.

Oh so Bush killed American soldiers and not al-Qaeda and the insurgents in Iraq. Wow, that’s really vapid thinking.

Well, if you would have watched the proceedings you would have learned that Bush first of all altered the transcripts from officials and military personnel to make his case for war and then presented them to a very unwitting congress. You would also have found out that if the UN declared that there was no reason to think that Hussein had WMD's that Bush had three plans on the table to force a war, which included painting our own military planes to look like UN planes and flying them into Iraq forcing a shoot down. Bush is responsible for every American soldiers death because he lied about the war. There were other reasons for going into Iraq, none of them included al-qaeda because al-qaeda was not in Iraq. In addition, we have murdered more than 1 million innocent Iraqi women, men, children and babies based not on false intelligence, but on intelligence that was manipulated by the Bush admin. In other words...we should have never...ever...gone into Iraq. It is all for naught.

In Korea, Truman was engaged directly in helping a military ally (the south) police their own (disputed) territory. He didn't just invade a country. Even still, this was a tremendously unpopular move and it was widely considered that presidents need congressional authority to commit troops without a declaration of war.

Vietnam was supported by the Gulf of Tonkin resolution.

Reagan's various military escapades were, like Korea, engagements to police allied territory (supported by treaty.) Except, of course, in the case of Iran/Contra which, little known fact, was totally illegal.

In any case, your statement that there's "nothing illegal about a president declaring war" is patently false. You may continue, if you like, to try to McCain your way out of this one, but if I were you, I'd stop payment on any outstanding checks you may have written to the American Heritage Liberty Bible History University of America or wherever it is you got your education.

I only watch the broadcast networks to see what they do not cover--and it is immense. Even today many progressive sites are ignoring this hearing. Most Americans hate government because members of both parties do not serve the public interest. But citizens do not know the facts, because the facts are hidden from them. Most Americans do not even know what their rights are under the constitution. They've never read it. Democracy cannot stand with an uninformed populous. The fine members of the Democratic party who have stood up for the rule of law are being ignored and marginalized. Only public opinion can change this, and public opinion has been very effectively manipulated. The few people on sites like this are aware of the facts. What about the half of America that can't afford a computer? What about older Americans who search their channels and newspapers daily and all they see is murder and the weather and Paris Hilton? So far my only plan is fliers on telephone poles. Sorry, but only part of our country have access to the netroots. That is why the polls have Obama and McCain so close. A lot of people called on their land lines don't know who Obama is or they believe the crap put out on Fox or Limbaugh or O'Reilly. These are the people who truly frighten me.

I will not conduct your research for you. It is well documented by the generals in Iraq as well as credible resources. Do me a favor chap and educate yourself.

Actually the British medical journal The Lancet did a study several years ago reporting that their rigorous statistics indicated at the time that a million Iraqis had died violent deaths as a result of this war. Several million Iraqis have been displaced either within the country or are now refugees in neighboring countries. Your statements are yet another example of an uninformed American who has closed your eyes to the truth. This administration is guilty of war crimes. The numbers of dead and wounded will be counted later. Our country did this in our names and with our money. It is up to us to bring these people to account.

Joker, you might want to give some thought to the fact that there are some Iraqi children out there who have lost families and limbs or both.

They will grow up.

Some may even learn to fly....but not land.

Comprende?

You're right. Our tyrant butchers Americans under the guise of a rigged criminal justice system laughing at the state sanctioned execution of a woman or mentally disabled adolescent or by sending 4,125 kids to their death in an illegal war.

[Deleted post]

The international numbers are much higher, Bugliosi was using our own govt estimate. International red cross has the figures as much as 1.2 millions Iraqi civilians death and twice over on US soldier that died on the way over to German's hospital so that they would not be counted as death in Iraq.

In the beginning of this war there was a story on tombstone maker that they were making many times over the number of tombstone for the military, and yet the numbers were so far off and exceed the reported death on the war in Iraq. It was vapid thinking that only 4,125 soldier died in Iraq, but I am only sorry that I don't have a shiny ball and lights to make you understand.

Anyone want to make a gentleman/gentlewoman's bet on what becomes of this? Besides the Dem incumbents getting re-elected?

Thank you for this information. Asking for the research on how many Iraqi citizens died is liking asking for the research on whether we invaded Iraq or not. I am dumbfounded. This is common knowledge. How it passes beyond the thinking range of US citizens is beyond me. Thank you.

Someday I hope to be present during a congressional hearing. I swear if I heard these congresscritters mention "the honorable so-and-so", I would speak out and say "I don't see anyone honorable here, except the concerned American citizens called to testify before a bunch of corrupt cronies."

Joker, Bush didn't invade Iraq because Saddam was a tyrant. Bush said we need to invade Iraq because they had WMD's, they had a direct connection to al qauda and they were an imminent threat to the US. NONE OF IT WAS TRUE!!!

It is said that as much as 5 millions Iraqi been displace out of the country.

The United States doesn't have a tyrant that butchers its own people.

Over 4000 US military dead (not to mention the 1 million Iraqis killed) is not butchering people? Yes, we do have a tyrant, a clown, a sociopath pResident who butchers his own people.

I watched the hearings today and was again struck by the traitorous GOP Congressmen that will refuse to acknowledge the crimes of this Administration. It is not false to call these men traitors, for they betray their oath of office and the Constitution of the U.S. Bugliosi was outstanding. His book is very good. I heard him interviewed where he said that bringing Bush to justice for War crimes will be his work for the remaining of this life. He is far more a patriot than those that sat in this hearing today. Even the Democrats that participated and were critical of all the violations of law have not done nearly enough with the exception of Kucinich, who has often stood alone because of his love of country and the seriousness by which he takes his oath.

The source for your figures are really outdated, October 2006? Really? I have heard of slow reader, but not that slow.

Joker please do not use the BBC as a credible source or "iraqbodycount.com" as another source. Both highly unreliable. I can only tell you that you need to desperately ween yourself from the MSM.

best thing is...the wingnuts cannot lable vince as a wacko lefty

Joker @ 99:

You are not revealing your sources because you have none.

One is too many. Screw your sanctimonious diatribe, and your obtuse twaddle over precisely how many innocents you have butchered. Hell, this whole mess was supposedly started because a handful of insane fuckers killed 3000 innocent people, and this country didn't even have anything to do with it. Even the most conservative of estimates puts the Iraqi civilian casualty figure at around twenty times that.

So how many innocent Iraqi civilians will placate your blood lust? What's the Iraqi - American civ exchange rate?

Take your bellicose posturing and shove it. You are nothing.

I agree with you. The bastards are betraying their oath of office and should be impeached immediately. It is time that this country wake up to the reality that we are owned by the corporate elite who rape our pocketbooks daily and scream in our ear about terror to keep us subdued.

A failure to think of the baby's future is negligent, AT BEST! Especially in light of the truth now known to you... NO?

It's B.S. You know it, we know it and now we need to let Congress know it! If you don't support your Rights, fine. But please, let the rest of us support AND defend our Rights and fight for the restoration of the Office of President and Vice President. The future of the Republic is at stake.

.

Is anyone aware of Bush prognosis from the psychiatry dept? Of when he first started to torture animals right after the death of his sister when he was 7 years old? He wasn't allowed to talk about his sister death and the day after the funeral his parents went out to play golf.

It's all in his book "a charge to keep"

When he said he would give up golfing to mourn with the family who lost their love one in Iraq, it reminded me of his painful childhood memories, and that he would do what his parents failed to do. This war may really be about George and his parents differences they harbor one another. Bush Sr hanging out with Bill Clinton and now with John McCain playing golf today.

I wish this guy was the special prosecutor.

You said it embittered and there is no more to it. We as a nation are at stake. Our Constitution has been violated. Time to rise up people. Doesn't matter what you have to do, but this country and its democracy is gone unless we find the power within. G'night all.

Usama Bin Laden is still not on the FBI wanted list and not being pursue. All the evidence was not even properly follow or usable from the 9/11 attack, and no criminal charges have yet stick to the detainees in GITMO because of information from torture not applicable for prosecution. The evidence for WMD is obtain by torture before the war even began.

As it turn out we use more WMD in shock and awe in Iraq, than Saddam use on his own people with depleted uranium and the damage is still taking its toll on the Iraqi people. Depending which way the wind blows, you can see the job its doing for the birth rate. There's your blowjob!

Otay,
LOL...

Mike Pence is a shitstain on the fabric of America. The man is nothing more than a lapdog YES man for Bush. What possibly could he have contributed at this hearing? If witnesses had produced pictures of Bush molesting farm animals Pence would dismiss it as being unimportant.

Reality Steals The Show

Vincent Bugliosi used "the real" to steal the spotlight and shake the members of this hearing up. Although at one point during the hearing one Republican congressmen tried to make this a academic exercise, Bugliosi knows this is no debate in which each side stands on equal footing. For the first time since I became aware of the Bush administration's defense for their actions, I got to see someone nail the truth into the room of a congressional hearing. Bugliosi is a true truth sayer who knows a crime, not a debate, has been committed by this president. As far has Bugliosi is concerned this was a crime yesterday being addressed today, so we will know how to deal with it tomorrow.

Bugliosi slang the truth as if he was using a sword of justice. He captured the audience in a way that only truth's power will allow. I know he made a few Republicans mad angry because they could not shut him up. Oh, they tried, but today Bugliosi was in his power and he knows how to use it.

Bush's lies has hidden behind public apathy, Republican distortions and mass denial for the duration of his term. Today the path was clear for a brief moment and I need to thank Bugliosi for his courage. Maybe, he will establish a framework for how to address this administration's crafty ways. I sure hope so.

Republicans were squealing like pigs today. Each and every Republican is an accomplice to the crimes of this criminal administration.

Bush i& Cheney are war criminals and should have been impeached by the Democratic congress.

Unfortunately, they have relegated themselves by Pelosi, Reid, & Hoyer, to a circus side-show. They have failed in their constitutional responsibilities to protect & defend the constitution.

The whole lot should be thrown in jail.

Steve King is nothing short of insane.

Thanks Vincent for reminding me what it feels like to be an American again for a few minutes.

Apparently Campbell's one of the new Whitehouse go-to commentators now that Fox News is so exposed and Timmy's gone. Good for CNN picking up the extra revenue stream to compensate for the loss of their souls. Of course, I'm just one of the old school (pre 911, founding father-like, old America thinking) hippies that consider liberal democracy, rule of law and the Constitution somewhat useful in securing liberty and the general welfare of the people. You know, as opposed to direct tyranny. Silly me.

Thanks Vincent for reminding me what it feels like to be an American again for a few minutes.

Isn't he an amazing man? I have read many of his books. Fascinating insight. He's really a hero here.

Bruce Fein is also an amazing American. His knowledge of history is without measure and he speaks so clearly and intelligently. I had forgotten what it was like when we had members of the Executive Branch who actually had an IQ.

When I get to the bottom
I go back to the top of the slide
Where I stop and turn
and I go for a ride
Till I get to the bottom and I see you again
Yeah, yeah, yeah

Well will you won't you want me to make you
I'm coming down fast but don't let me break you
Tell me tell me tell me the answer
You may be a lover but you ain't no dancer

Look out
Helter skelter
helter skelter
helter skelter
Yeah, hu,

Helter Skelter
She's coming down fast
Yes she is
Yes she is
coming down fast

How's that one go about sound and fury? I respect this guy's passion and intelligence, but life isn't a Kapra movie. Justice was murdered the day Cheney, with the help of his huntin' buddy Scalia, seized power. He rigged it all so that he could rule as he pleased and no one could ever hold him to account (no, I don't think he did 9/11, but he must have had an orgasm over the "opportunity" it gave him take over). And he and his Texas muppet will retire to a life of absolute luxury, their every need catered to, living out their days in their bubbles and man-sized safes, all paid for by us. Makes ya' sick.

"keeping it simple"

Given the low IQ group he was speaking to I think that was best.

132 Gotugye > And most Dems too, unfortunately. Kinda puts a conspiracy gnat into play.

Mr. Bugliosi is a formidable man and lawyer. He has been blacked out in the media since writing this book. The so called liberal media which have not printed a thing about this book. Not even the fact that it has been written.

Any time you don't think this media is corporate owned, think again. He has managed to get his message through on progressive stations. But it has been a hard road. He makes the case that Bush should be indicted for murder. Something more than 75% of Americans would agree with. Including some Republicans that can still think for themselves.

The book is brilliant and so is this famous lawyer. If you get a chance you should read the book. It is layed out step by step in legal terms anyone can understand with the evidence for each charge.

I hope he was able to do some good at this photo op today. Let's not dignify it by calling it a hearing.

Thank you!

Where Is The Story

I view this as an opportunity to seat more Democrats in November. The Democrats have got to sensationalize what the Republicans have did to relief legislation. They have got to let the masses know immediate relief should not be politicized for something that would not do anything but make Oil companies richer.

The way I see it the Democrats need to do a one thing to be in the best position to eliminate the Republican drilling craze:

They have got to debunk the polling data the Republicans distorted to say most Americans want us to drill. This has got to be done in two ways. The first is they need to inform the voters of the bias nature of the Republican polls and sites like Rasmussen polling and RealClear politics. At every opportunity, these organization will manipulate data to favor John McCain and Republican interest in general. When Gallup worded the question in this way:

Please say whether you would favor or oppose taking each of the following steps to attempt to reduce the price of gasoline. How about: allowing oil drilling in U.S. coastal and wilderness areas now off-limits to oil exploration?

The misleading part of this question is: "whether you would favor or oppose taking each of the fallowing steps to attempt to reduce the price of gasoline." Instead of asking the question honestly, the bias pollster mislead the responders to think drilling would bring prices down immediately. The fact about this is widely known. If drilling were to start tomorrow, it would not yield a drop of oil until 2018. There is nothing immediate about drilling.

It would be nice to make the Republicans pay for what they blocked today. Watching Vincent Bugliosi speak from a power perspective was inspiring and a model for how Democrats should posture themselves for this very misleading adversary.

Joseph

We can't be rid of republicans soon enough. They have NOTHING to offer but hubris.

Fein is a very smart man. He really knows his stuff and I could listen to him all day!

The Hague has been seriously considering charging the Bush Administration with war crimes at least since December 2004.

The only news show I have seen Vincent on is Democracy Now with Amy Goodman.

Not even Keith Olbermann has had him on.

I hope C-span plays this in a continuous loop all weekend long.

I watched the whole thing and recorded it.

I loved it when he declined to answer a question because he only deals in "facts."
