Right Gears Up For "Armageddon of the Culture War"
By Nicole Belle Friday Aug 01, 2008 6:00pmFor two hours earlier this week, pastors gathered at more than 200 sites throughout California, Arizona, and Florida to be exhorted by national Religious Right leaders like Tony Perkins, Harry Jackson, Maggie Gallagher, and Chuck Colson and others to hold nothing back in their efforts to fight against marriage equality. The People For the American Way Foundation today released a memo [PDF] chronicling the call and outlining the Right's plans for the weeks ahead:
The primary focus of the call was Proposition 8 in California, described by Colson as "the Armageddon of the culture war." Many speakers invoked the language of warfare, raising up an army of believers, putting soldiers in the streets, being on the front lines of a battle. Lou Engle actually described a massive rally planned in Qualcomm stadium on November 1 as a "blitzkrieg moment."The primary focus of the call was Proposition 8 in California, described by Colson as "the Armageddon of the culture war." The collective paranoia of the Religious Right is downright scary; everything is a jihad for them. Tom DeLay, that poster child for the Religious Right's grasp on ethics and walking in His shoes (/snark), who went on the radio earlier this month and said that God created America to propagate Christianity. Add to this the fringe movement to convince the Religious Right that Obama is, in fact, the Anti-Christ and you have the makings of one hell of an election season.
If only the FSM would touch them with his noodly appendage and get them to chill out.

I don't care about the ravings of mad men (and women).
This is a secular country.
Period.
The [reich-wing] concept of a culture war is a complete and utter facade. The reich-wing are not happy unless they are not happy. They are bred to fight and to be unhinged, angry, unhappy souls. They are the bottom feeders. They are the despised that love to despise. Good riddance. Enjoy your permanent minority status.
Oh won't it be exciting to see what crazy bat-shit insanity these fucking crackpots will come up with?
My answer is Bring - em - On.
Didn't they learn anything from that idiot in Tennessee?
Tennesean is believin'.
Let them have their Nuremberg style rally. It will mobilize millions more, who don't agree with them, to get out and vote.
Can't we just drop these people off in Afghanistan and call it a day.
I thought the boy George W Bush was the anti-christ or is it Dick "the barnacle" Cheney?
If the FSM touches any one of them, they will turn into a horrible red sauce.
Aren't these the same crazies that believe in the Rapture?

It is also a country where elected leaders don't think it is a good idea to declare martial law to clamp down on crime ... however .. see previous thread

And crazy machete-wielding Canadian bus passengers.
I'm watchin' a rerun of the Simpsons when the go to England. I always thought it odd that as heavy a drinker as Homer is they didn't have a scene set in a pub.
There's a scene where Bart and Lisa are sitting on a sidewalk stoned out on English chocolates, and a couple of English lords are wagering on them. Homer takes his kids away. But in every re-run they always edit out the bit where one says he loves the other, and the two enjoy a lingering kiss.
ysbaddaden @ 5:
Hopefully they learned that some liberals can fight back ... imagine their surprise after watching the Democratic leadership in Congress the last little while.
That's funny.
Rightwing religious zealots are nothing more than shiftless followers. Oh, they'll get out and vote how they're told but asked to do anything more involved than that and the overwhelming majority will just stay home reading their bibles and jabbering in tongues.
The right wing American Jebus lovers are simply self-absorbed children.
these morons would do well to review the history of religious wars in europe, particularly england during the struggles between catholicism and protestantism.
but this is just an excuse to finally start murdering people that don't look like them. once they pile those bodies up, they'll start sorting out the people left who don't think like them.
I wouldn't be so dismissive of this crowd. No one loses like the Right Wing or believes and supports vengeance as a lifestyle. It's like a dog with lockjaw.
Jimbo @ 18:
Yeah, unlike their equally moronic Islamic counterparts, you won't ever see our blowhard domestic Christian Jihadis strappin' on the C4 for a one-way pink-mist trip to Jeeeeeezus.
I will leave an offering of beer and noodles for FSM, and beg him to hear your plea....
btw, have I mentioned I love you for giving the FSM props, Nicole???

"warriors", "war", "soldieirs", these cowardly conservative reich wingers love to use words to pretend they're on a battlefield somewhere but when it comes to enlisting to fight on a real battlefield they are nowhere to be found.

LMFAO!!!!!!!
Have these people gone completely off the rails..?
Joe Tseng @ 29:
I trust you. My brother has the same disease.
Let's see if I got this straight: Someone can refer to a massive rally as "a blitzkrieg event" with a straight face...But OBAMA's the Nazi becaus he addressed 250K in Berlin? I'm quite sure that someone in the MSM will adress this double standard, right?...right?
P.S. As a San Diego Chargers fan, I'm pissed that these nutjobs would dare foul up the home of the defending AFC West Champions with their massive rally. Couldn't they have pulled this crap in...Oakland?
The collective paranoia of the Religious Right is downright scary; everything is a jihad for them.
Why is that a struggle for the right? You do know jihad means struggle and does not mean holy war.
Barring disaster Obama will be the next President... and then after the right-wing collectively snaps like a twig one of these ultra-right "christian" conservative types (read: klan members) will put a bullet in his head. Then the shit will REALLY hit the fan... you just watch.
The Religious Right is the RL version of 4Chan, let's let them stew in their own juices, they're already doing an awesome job of it.
What a joke. Count me as an foreign combatant for the left. :P
Lyon @ 36:
I seriously doubt that will happen. Security ain't what it used to be. It's far better. If he suffers from an attack, it will be someone he trusts.

It just strikes me as alarmingly likely. The hardcore racism inherent to the history of America has merely been whitewashed with a veneer of civility since the 60s and I fully expect that veneer to shatter if/when Obama wins. I've seen plenty "I don't want no goddam n****er runnin' mah country!" type commentary all over the place. That church shooting last week was the tip of an iceberg.
dangerdeux @ 34:
How about Idaho or Utah?

WHY does ANY media outlet cover this garbage??? This deserve to be in like a fox publication distributed in Tony Perkins yard only.
Culture war? Gee, I wonder where they picked up that phrase.
I am reading an excellent book called The Battle For Spain the Spanish Civil War, by Antony Beevor. If you want to see a historical blueprint for what is happening in the USA, I ighly recommend this book.
The Spanish Civil War was a class war, one which began long before armed hostilities broke out in 1936. The exact same thing is happening in America today. The similarities are startling.
Evangelicals use the language of war in their churches as a matter of routine. Sermons are sprinkled with talk of shields and spears and marching and blood.
It doesn't amaze me that their call to arms should use the same terms. The scary part is that some of the tiny-brained are literalists and these people think they're doing God's work by blowing up Family Planning Clinics, shooting gynecologists, and tossing gays off bridges in Bangor, ME.
Pathetic.
nicole -
you've got a double sentence posted up there: "The primary focus of the call ..."
not?
Coincidentally I'm reading "The Devil in Dover", dealing with the Creationist trial in 2004. Written by a local newspaper reporter, who was there to observe the infiltration of Creationists onto the school board and then into the school's curriculum. These are neighbors (and in fact that author's father too)
but they are also very scary people when on "their mission". And logic and reason - and proveable truth - just goes over their heads.
HELP ME... i am alone out there... join their blogs and help spread the truth...
don't be nasty... just honest... but SOMEONE needs to keep telling them MCCAIN'S RECORD...
he WAS pro-choice and will be such in the white house
he IS only kissing ass for their vote
he IS less a Christian than OBAMA.... and will do ANYTHING for a vote....
Oh hell no..Haven't you heard that if you put a thought out in the universe, some nutjob will take you up on your prophesy. But you are right about the s**t hitting the fan but on second thought this would be one way for Bush to keep his promise to the Private Prison industry. He promised them that he will fill them up and with the passage of the Patriot Act and the other constitutional violating laws, he just might keep it....we will see.
Lyon @ 36:
and when an earthquake or massive lightening strike hits

some say christians, i say domestic enemy combatants,
the real criminals of world peach.
The important point is how the Media presents these people to the public. If they (MSNBC, FOX, CNN, Washington Post, NY Times, etc) to their normal brain-dead thing then they will do stories that "present both sides" just to be fair. No mind that one side is just plain crazy, they will still present both sides without question and without analysis.
Those that believe that certain people are going to hell or are aligned with the anti-christ should be challenged. When the start quoting the Bible the reporter should (rather than just write down everything without comment) ask how their bible quoting would work with other passages of their bible that allows people to stone non-believers. The reporter should ask them to answer charges by other religious leaders that such literal interpretations are not justified. Since their entire argument is based on the going-to-hell-because-the-bible-said-so mime then they should be able to answer criticism.
Of course the reporters won't say any of this because they want to remain "objective".
Given their track record I fear the press will fumble this as they have fumbled so many other things.
Sigh....
"Obama is, in fact, the Anti-Christ "
no, he's just LIKE the anti-christ...
wow... well... i did not see that one coming... ... this is august?... just getting started... ... huh.
Robbo @ 4:
where do you live? we want you to face them. i personally
don't want a bunch of lunatics at my door, shoving their

Organized religion is a joke and a pathetic crutch for weak-willed, small-minded people.
Man, how many wars have been fought in the name of religion? How many lives lost?
It will be funny as shit watching Christ's crackers as the putative end times begin, willing themselves to get raptured up like old guys straining at stool but stuck here with anomic rationality ascendant. Makes me want to commit some messy sodomy just to upset them.
I'd like to know what their take was on the Tennessee Terrorist who shot up that Church.
The Truth Hurts @ 66:
Watch what you say about Obama.
The Truth Hurts @ 66:
Organized religion as it presently stands I will freely admit is archaic, designed for subsistence methods and times that no longer apply to today. Much better to have something like the American civil religion worldwide, but I don't see an adoption of that as likely.
pathetic idiots.
With all the infiltration by the FBI into activist groups, lets just hope they have plants at this event for the Planned Parent Hood Bomb Making workshops.
truthandgoodness @ 71:
These pathetic idiots have called most of the shots for the past decade. Is there any wonder the nation is fucked up in most every measurable way?
Wouldn't it behoove the religious right to facilitate the end of the world?
If Obama = Antichrist, then f'ing vote for him! Bring on this awesome fire-from-sky shit!
If you're a Christian, and in your mind Obama = Antichrist, and you don't vote for him, you are willingly trying to subvert what has been foretold. Baby Jesus cries when you try to subvert his will. Don't make Baby Jesus Cry!!!
Vote for him, and when all that brimstone shit doesn't happen, you can say "Whoops, sorry about our breathtakingly ridiculous paranoia" and retire to a compound so the rest of the thinking world can forget about you.
Funny how these Christnazis are looking at their campaign here as a "blitzkrieg". Very fitting for the Christian NAZIS to be regardig this the same waY as the German Christian NAZIs did. Time to burn some churches.
And really, they're 3/4s the way to having their own swastika. All that's needed is A little 90 degree bend one way off each the cross's arms, and VOILA! A good old Christnazi CRUCIFIXIKA.
Most of these heartless hypocrites could care less about an Iraq family getting blown up by the troops. Fake Christians everyone of them.
If they think he's the antichrist then they should be out campaigning for him. The arrival of the antichrist brings forth the rapture so all those jesuscrispies can ascend to heaven. I do so love how they change their beliefs to suit their whims. Jerks.
Personally, I'd prefer that the FSM wrapped a noodly appendage round their worthless little necks till they stopped breathing. How DARE they try to interfere in the politics of a sovereign state?
God allowed America to be created for the primary purpose of inventing, and then spreading, the fast food industry around the world. The Declaration of Independence says that we have to right to pursue happiness, and McDonald's has the Happy Meal. Coincidence? I think not.
As for a fringe group trying to spread the rumor that Obama is the Antichrist they do have that wrong. Benny Hinn, Charles Dobson, Rod Parsley, to name but three, are vying desperately for that coveted role. I know that the Pope is a crowd favorite, but the competition is really fierce. So why try to write-in some, not even a smidgen of a chance, amateur? That's like trying to write in Mickey Mouse for POUS. Wait, let's think about that.....
That's what I was telling Alan Colmes today on his blog post about the Anthrax killer;
The only thing separating the Taliban from America's Religious Right is burqas.
That's it, burqas.
As my father always said and I fully agree with this concept...." If any church or preacher or rabbi or political figure wishes to mix religion and politics or tell their flocks or members how to vote it is TIME TO PAY THEIR OWN WAY via TAXATION. Just think of the revenue generated by Catholic-owned lands alone". I wish just once someone in power had the fortitude (GUTS) to say this out loud.
Maybe we're looking at this Obama as the anti-Christ meme in the wrong way. After all, wouldn't any right thinking fundy want to work toward fulfilling the prophecies? After all, ya gotta have the anti-Christ before the tribulation, and you got to have the tribulation before all the righteous are transported out of here in the rapture to mansions in the sky. Their promotion of some middle-east policy seems to be an effort to bring about Armegeddon.
I say we promote Obama as the candidate to fulfill the lord's plan-kind of like the republican's use gay marriage to get them out to vote.
Whoops, I see Stephen@77 has already pointed this out.
Be careful , the leaders of these loons are political types ( Colson , Reid , Hagee , Paisley , Robertson , Dobson etc ) . What their objective is in my opinion is to reasert themselves as a political force . To do that they need to get their followers whipped up into a frenzy and they decided gay marriage was the best vehicle. Their real goal is to get organized ( and raise money of course ) then to make lots of noise and create mischief if possible . No candidate wants a bunch of lunitics crying and praying outside of events or to be asked questions about whether they support gay marriage , especially Obama , it's not only a no win for him but also ( here's the dangerous part ) could give borderline racists cover not to vote for him .
Chuck Colson went from Watergate to a leader for the christian right. He fits in well.
Carl Jung said that in every population may be found some thirty to forty percent who are certifiably 'psychotic'. He was right and the US is a case in point. These RR is not only 'psychotic' and delusional, they are psychopathic and utterly lacking 'empathy' and other qualities that we associated with a civilized society. If something is not done, they will have ruined America beyond repair of any sort. Already --Bush has destroyed the Constitution and it remains to be seen if the Democrats will have the stomach for a 'restoration' when Bush and McCain are consigned to the dustbin of history. BTW --this did not begin with Bush. The process by which the US becomes a fascist police state was well underway with the ascension of Ronald Reagan.
Didn't China have a culture revolution?
Tell you what, let these Christians have their Jihad, and we'll all see. There won't be another christian president for a century!
The smell of intolerance in the morning...aaaah. So un-American, so unhinged. This country is made up of all sorts of people, and it was founded with an independent spirit railing against the injustices perpetrated by a distant monarch. The Constitution was written by brave patriots and men of character and intellect and is still the most amazing Democratic document ever devised by man. Only amended 27 times! And it protects ALL people in this country, not just a select few. So these religious zealots can have their 'blitzkrieg moments' all they want and whenever they want. But the minute they decide to shove their agenda onto me and try to amend the US Constitution to enshrine as law that very agenda, then we're going to have a real 'blitzkrieg moment' in this country. these nuts may think they can start it, but they will most certainly not be the ones to finish it. I have a faith in God, but it's private, and not so blatant as these sorts. it's amazing how un-christian like some of their behavior is (some of them, not all). If either McCain or Obama is elected these folks will not get what they want, that's for sure. i don't even think they'll get their dream of another Scalia or Roberts or Alito appointed to the court. the Dems in Congress won't pass someone like them. forget about it.
Too bad Leni Riefenstahl isn't available to film this Glorious Event.
Jesus would be so proud...
If you want to understand these people, you will want to read John Dean's Conservatives Without Conscience or read The Authoritiarians.
Ahh yes, Blitzkrieg. How appropriate for today's fascists.
I think, based on his history, that Chuck Colson doesn't so much love Jesus as he loves being a mean son-of-a-bitch to his political enemies.
most of the heavy lifting for this is done on the talk radio monopoly and it will be coordinated through talk radio by the GOP's roves for maximum election effect. small religious radio stations may have a part but the big talk stations in every state will add to it.
progressives can fight back by listening to the big GOP soapboxes once in a while, listing local sponsors of the shows and calling their management and ownership, who may or may not be aware of what they are sponsoring. sometimes they sign in to a package deal and don't have control. or picketing the station.
and if you figure out there's no chance of getting through to talk to the on air talker, just tell the screener how you feel and keep calling them back- after all, the screeners are the ones who make sure the talkers are never contested and only have to talk with fawning sycophants. the screeners may pass it on to the owners and managers if 3 out of 4 callers is just yelling at them about what an important part they played in bringing on the bush disaster and how you don't like your airwaves filled with lies about Obama.
Does anyone find it ironic that the religious right pushes the view that Obama may usher in or be the anti-Christ when Sun Myung Moon - who openly claims to be the Messiah on earth to usher in a world run by the religious under his influence and claims part of that Messiah job title also includes raising up the religious right for political purposes, to bring the USA more in tune with his ideology by empowering the theocrats - does anyone else find it ironic that Moon has been the number one funder and molder of right wing thought in America the last 30 years?
See here and here.
Then there is this article about how the REPUBLICANS/Conservatives worked with their theocracy desiring Messiah to tear down the wall between church and state - literally.
This is what the first editor of the Washington Times said about the conservatives Messiah's organization that outspent anyone propping and molding today's conservative mind - conservatism's behind the scenes partner the last 30 years.
James Whelan 1991:
I don't know what's more amazing - the fact the right has the gall to promote such horsecrap or that liberals are too uninformed to point to Moon whenever they try to do so.
...some folks are kind of late with their griping about obama-must have been seriously occuppied with their romantic cooing of their boy, bush, huh? he loves it when you call him 'Decider.' catching the occasional crumb, wishing for more-then that 'skinny guy with the funny name' shows up....and now they have to worry about words like...'change' and 'hope'...again. DADGUMMIT, 'thought they had dang, stupid, librul drivel tossed to the trashcan of history!
