Jon Stewart recaps the current situation in Georgia (and the media's ridiculous coverage of it), and calls out President Bush for having the chutzpah to condemn Russia for invading and disrespecting Georgia's sovereignty -- because only reckless bully countries with no disregard for international standards do that kind of stuff.

Stewart: "It'll be very interesting to see what the United States does here. Our invasion of Iraq somewhat hamstrings our options in Georgia, not just militarily, but also dimplomaticly, and I guess you would say, morally? Let's watch our UN Ambsassador Zalmay Khalilzad dance the delicate dance...

Khalilzad: We want to make sure our Russian colleagues understand that the days of overthrowing leaders by miulityary means...

Stewart: Careful, Khalilza. Steady...steady...

Khalilzad: The days of overthrowing leaders by military means in Europe, those days are gone...

Stewart: Yes! He did it! Those days are gone...in Europe. In the Middle East, it's morning in America.

we are seeing but the initial stages of other nations taking a ride around the block on the back of the bush doctrine. nice legacy there georgie...

the bush doctrine is the 21c version of pandora's box. except this time its real.

Brilliant. Sadly, I can't seem to find 2008 episodes of Jon & Stephen to watch:/
Damn lazy torrenters!

The Russians are idiots....

If I was Putin, I would have claimed that Georgia had WMDs and that they were supporting Chechen militants.

Why can't they learn from us???

So the Daily Show writers are pulling my quotes off C&L to use on their show.

Was Georgia war a neocon election ploy (read the article before deciding)?

Seriously, the hypocrisy from the Bush Administration is so disgusting. I'm beyond sick of watching these fuckers embarrass our nation.

OReilly thinks this is the start of World War 3. If it is, we will get our ass kicked! But that is all hype. We wouldn't dare get entangled again. The cons know when to stop pushing the envelope!

Today when Perino was giving her briefing, one of the reporters said he had reports that there were US military in uniform in Georgia. Then he asked, was it true. She gave an around about answer about someone distributing the humanitarian supplies and who was best equipped to handle that process. She left the impression that indeed there are uniformed American military there.

Seems we were able to get these humanitarian supplies over there to Georgia faster than we were to get help to the victims of Katrina, right here in the US.

This kind of aid?

What worries me is the fact that Saakashvili is so desperate right now that he will do or say anything to place any U.S. forces between him and the Russians in order to save his own skin. If that turns out to be a shooting match between the U.S. and Russia then so be it is probably his point of view.

I dunno. Dana just said the plane had landed and the aid would be distributed.

It's so nice that the MSM is focusing on issues that really matter to Americans, such as the John Edwards affair. I honestly couldn't sleep at night not knowing the outcome of that situation...

Of course, the fact that I had to sleep in a box behind Wal-Mart because my job was outsourced to India because gas was too expensive and I ended up losing my house, or the fact that it's been unseasonably rainy of late probably didn't help my sleeping either.

OK, maybe it's not that bad... Yet... But when McCain is elected in November (thanks Diebold! thanks MSM!), we may want to start considering who makes the strongest most durable cardboard boxes for our future housing needs.

I agree. If the U.S. wants to restore some of its influence in the region, or at least in the eyes of those other breakaway republics, it must be part of the negotiating process between Russia and Georgia. Thus far, it is the EU with French President Sarkozy brokering the terms between the sides. Without a U.S. hand in the peace process, those other republics will have even more reason to doubt the U.S as a stable partner. However, the U.S. can't do it because it has little credibility already and nothing to back it up with.

MSNBC: Georgia leader expects U.S. military help

TBILISI, Georgia - President Mikhail Saakashvili told his people Wednesday that the U.S. military will take control of the ex-Soviet state's seaports and airports as part of a humanitarian aid mission amid Georgia's battle with Russia, but the Pentagon quickly shot down the claim.

Bush announced the U.S. humanitarian effort prior to Saakashvili's comments, which came in a televised address to his nation. Bush said the mission had already begun and involved U.S. aircraft as well as naval forces.

Saakashvili then told Georgians: "You have heard the statement by the U.S. president that the United States is starting a military-humanitarian operation in Georgia. It means that Georgian ports and airports will be taken under the control of the U.S. defense ministry in order to conduct humanitarian and other missions. This is a very important statement for easing tension." ..

From US Embassy in Georgia:
U.S. Senate Delegation Led by Senator John McCain Sees “Tremendous Progress” in Georgia

On August 26-29 [2006], Senators John McCain (R-AZ), Saxby Chambliss (R-GA), Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Mel Martinez (R-FL), Richard Burr (R-NC) and John Sununu (R-NH) completed an extensive tour of Georgia. ..

At a dinner ceremony in the ancient Black Sea fortress of Gonio, President Saakashvili presented Senator McCain the Order of St. George. Senator McCain is only the second American recipient of the award. President Saakashvili awarded President George W. Bush the Order of St. George during his visit to Tbilisi in May, 2005. The Order of St. George was established by the Georgian Parliament in 2004 to recognize individuals for special service to Georgia. ..

In Senaki, the Delegation joined President Saakashvili for a tour of Georgia’s new NATO-standard military facility and met with American military trainers to discuss the U.S. sponsored Georgia Sustainment and Stability Operations Program (GSSOP). SSOP, which is currently in its second phase, continues to prepare Georgian troops for peace keeping activities in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere. ..

At a press conference after the Tskhinvali visit, Senator McCain expressed concern that he saw “no progress” in South Ossetia on peace initiatives backed by Georgia, the U.N. and the OSCE. Asked by a reporter whether Russian Peace keepers should remain in South Ossetia, Senator McCain stated flatly “My comment would be that it is time to evaluate whether the Russian peacekeepers are carrying out their mission in an objective fashion. And I believe serious consideration should be given to a new force either from the OSCE or the U.N. which can do a job that is more credible than present Russian peacekeeping force.” ..

Russians BAD.

Hilarious!
Russia has already won.
Russia won much more than a regional dispute with a former Soviet Satellite.
Russia won long before Georgian forces tried to recapture South Ossetia.
Russia won when the US wondered like a drunken sailor being shanghaied from a San Fransisco bar into Afghanistan.

Given all the BS that has gone on over the past 40-50 years, all in the name of spreading freedom (and lining the pockets of the elite), my guess is that it will take a VERY long time to regain that authority and pull others who have been badly influenced back in line with internationational law.

I am now watching a John McCain press conference from Michigan regarding the Russia-Georgia confilct and he just said "In the 21st century, nations don't invade other nations."!

ROFL @ 74

Are these people truly that blind to their hypocrisy? Or are they just hoping the masses won't notice?

"War is God's way of teaching Americans geography." Brilliant.

Liberal AND Proud @ 64:

So, they are calling it a failure of monumental proportions for the Bush Administration. That's saying alot.

Another little failure I noticed: the Bush administration has been asleep at the switch for the past 8 years. They were stunned that Russia could strike so fast. Maybe they still think the Russian army is the same rag-tag bunch it was when the Soviet empire fell apart, but it's a whole different animal today, lean and mean. This is supposed to be Condi's area of expertise. Hello?

Daily Show: Invading sovereign countries is fine…unless they’re in Europe

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aQrClo6H3Zo

Ahhh yes... Magnificent bastards all.... And that's just the ones who shill for the right... Imagine how good the rest might be.. If there was something like, oh I don't know... 'A FAIRNESS DOCTRINE' maybe in news reporting.. Hell, could there be a gold medal in all this someplace for snappy journalism????

Oh well, speaking of crass 3 a.m. moments.... And aren't they all pretty crass??? I had one of those last night... After I went potty, it was all better... World desaster, or maybe just bedsheet desaster... averted... And Captain Assslaps mouthpiece offers up pearls of wisdom???? Ehh, not really... More like phony platitudes that noone listens to anymore... Those days are gone..... in Europe.... and most everwhere else too nowadays... Huh imagine that..

Well cuz... That shit will happen when you piss and fretter away all your credibility doing exactly that, which you point accusing fingers at others for doing...And tsk tsk them to not do those 'crass' 3 a.m. type thingys you just spent five years doing... Turns out, do as I say, not as I do??.. Really doesn't work, WOW, what a revelation... WHO FREAKIN KNEW!!!!

Meanwhile, those Bushies suuuree are a wholesome bunch of smartypants ain't dey.... Reg-lar salts-o-the-earth....JD

Am I missing something here? It appears to me that Georgia was the aggressor. This whole ball got rolling when they moved back into South Ossetia, which has been practically sovereign for over 15 years. They played with fire and now they are getting burnt.

Russia has thrown down a gauntlet to the United States, challenging President George W Bush to "choose" between Washington's relationship with Georgia and its future ties with Moscow.

Bush Co. choose to develop a strong, peaceful, cooperative and prosperous relationship with Russia instead of tinkering around crowning tin horn despots and idiots they can sell multi millions worth of the latest U.S. Military gadgetry to in these tiny countries?

Right! Sure they will.

George Bush got owned. He's Putin's bitch now.

The Iraq war was the cornerstone upon which was laid the foundation for the 21st century. Fuck George W. Bush, and all who sailed with him.

Yip no New York Bullhorn moment or Bulging Codpiece is going to change that anytime soon.

Saakashvili is now blaming Russia for having "carpetbombed" Tskhinvili.

And demanding the Russians be held responsible for HIS war crimes.

And he's declared the the US Ministry of Defense is coming to Georgia to secure the seaport of Poti (which the Russians currently occupy and have been sinking Georgian military vessels) and to secure Tbilisi.

Saakashvili has repeatedly invoked the name of McCain - thanking him for his assistance and for stating that the American people stand behind the Georgians.

And everyone .. DO read the Robert Scheer article:
Georgia War: A Neocon Election Ploy?

I don't know what to make of this person. I do find myself asking the same questions about him that I ask about Bush. Is he nuts? Is he brain damaged? Is he drunk? Is he high? Is he completely divorced from reality?

That Nation article mentioned something completely lost so far in the "we need a new cold war" hysteria: Uncle Joe Stalin was himself Georgian & the Georgians seem to think this is a good thing w/museums & squares & such for the guy worse than Hitler (not "some one who was" or "a guy" but the definite article only individual in history worse than Hitler). If i was Russian i'd want that whole country decimated for only that reason, it's not right, reasonable or even defensible, but i can name one country that has recently destroyed two other countries out of a misguided sense of revenge.

Karmas a Bitch!

Vlad to Georgie... 'Who's your daddy now beeootch?'....JD

That idiot running Georgia ever heard of the Internet?

Saakashvili "The Idiot"

Bush really knows how to choose them doesn't he?

I mean how smart does one need to be when your sitting right next door to a Major Military Superpower to realize . . . If I go in under cover and start shooting Russian citizens and peace keepers in the dark of night there could be MAJOR trouble.

Noooooooooooo thats to hard to figure out! Hey Boosh and the Americans will come to my rescue! They promised to put food on our families! Make the Pie Higher!

I had to turn off my radio after listening to Condi, sweet Condi express her moral outrage with Russia. It's unbelievable first, that she or anyone connected to the Bush Crook crowd lecture Russia, but even worse is that the media in attendance isn't shouting out the obvious and calling them on it.

LA Confidential,

Good article, it just further reinforced the obvious that our MSM is not acknowledging.

Do we no longer have ANY laws in this country?!?!?

Yes, we have laws.

Unfortunately, breaking them is no longer a crime.

"War is God's way of teaching Americans geography." Brilliant.

"In Europe," was pretty good, too.

But my favorite--bush shall forever after be known as, "Captain Asslap."

Sad that all the really good comedy comes in the form of the day's hard news...or, um, that the news shows up in the middle of the really good comedy...or whatever.

Just go shopping...

Totally speculating out my ass, here, folks (as usual)...but those of you who are cheering for a Wesley Clark vice-presidency got a big boost today.

I was at the taping of TDS last night. The only thing they filmed and didn't air was a clip of Khalilzad getting into it on the U.N. floor where someone called him on the hypocracy of the US condemming Russia. Stewart shows a quick clip of them and goes "Ok, he's on thin ice here. If he's gonna pull this off, he's really gonna have to work for it. Let's see if he can thread this needle." and then they showed the first clip that had actually aired.

Here's why these two can't solve anything:

Invasion of Grenada. Equivalence?

nice footage - too bad IT CAN'T BE SEEN OUTSIDE THE USA.

Bruce H. @ 17:

... We wouldn't dare get entangled again. The cons know when to stop pushing the envelope!

Kind of. The problem is that their envelope is way bigger than the sane one your probably thinking of. Their objective is well outside the sane zone and completely catastrophic. The NeoCons are merely seeding their purported October suprise here.

So, Ms. Speaker, do you see why impeaching these maniacs NOW is kind of vital? If you wait any longer, there won't be a clock left to run out, or your job, or your country....

The level of blatant hypocrisy in this administration is just staggering...I mean...do they not hear themselves?

They hear themselves and they love the sound.

Make no mistake, these people are masters of propaganda. Given how stupid and misinformed most Americans are, it's all too easy.

Exactly. It's not hard to imagine Cheney sitting in his comfy chair at his undisclosed location just laughing his ass off every time The Chimp or one his flunkies open their mouths.

DONT WORRY.... according to White On Rice... we are going to "KICK RUSSIA OUT OF THE COOL KIDS CLUB" they will be banished from the tree house, and not allowed to go on the family picnic !!!!!

In other news.... we are sending our remaining troop..... Private Parts.... to Georgia to patrol their border

What is really staggering is the stupidity of the American people who cannot see the blatant hypocrisy of supporting our invasion of Iraq while criticizing Russia's invasion of Georgia.

And thinking that Georgia is IN ASIA jusst make really too ironic, doesn´t it?
Like:

A small war is the best way... to teach American people the wrong geography.
The Bush administration for once doesn´t lie: those days are really gone In Europe (since Serbia / KOsovo, actually), but not in Asia, be it Asia Minor or middle East...
