Everyone knew this presidential election was going to be ugly and now the gloves are off. Unable to run on issues, the Republican attack machine is in full swing and as always, we are inundated with endless smears, lies and attacks from a party that is in a steep, painful and very public decline.
Silent Patriot posted yesterday about "author" Jerome Corsi's appearance on Larry King Live where he was dismantled by Media Matters' Paul Waldman. Now, the Obama campaign has responded to Corsi, debunking the staggering number of lies in his book, Obama Nation. Fight The Smears - Unfit for Publication:

Jerome Corsi just published a new book full of rehashed distortions and the same old lies about Barack Obama, and the right-wing noise machine is in full gear promoting it.
In 2004, Corsi helped launch the Swift Boat smear campaign with a book of distortions and lies he wrote about John Kerry.

Debunking lies is great, but I have a feeling these lies will need to be repeatedly discussed by the MSM to "make sure."
I just saw some ads that Obama is running in Indiana (while watching Rachel on Keith) and maybe some other states. They are VERY GOOD!!!! Just what I was hoping for. Just what YOU were hoping for. Obama’s campaign is very very good as time has told. I think McShame is going to be hit so hard he will forget that he forgot who he even is.
I was a little worried but RIGHT NOW I am feeling confident. Everything McLiar does is wrong. His campaign might say some stuff that might resonate with the Sixpack family but Obama always seems to come back with much better ads that rebut McGrandpa’s nonsense.

I find the subtitle of Corsi's book amusing. Right-wingers accusing Obama of fostering a "cult of personality"? What a joke!!! This accusation from people who think Reagan could walk on water and who want to place a monument to Reagan in every county in America. (This is true. Google "Reagan Legacy Project" for more info).
Corsi's subliminal message from the title of the book,'Obama Nation' is that Obama is an 'abomination'. So hear we go again, pure unadulterated smear, smear, smear bullshit. Will we ever learn, the Republicans are the most evil bastards in the WORLD !!!!

I don't know if they check all the sites regularly Cap'n. I send them comments that I think they can use. I cut and paste them onto letters. I always give credit to the authors of the letters and to the site from where i get them. This one has the best comments. They actually reply to me and thank me for the material. I told them to check this site more often.
It's not hard too do. I only take the best comments. The ones that are profane don't even get near the letters.

This is one of the things that troubles me. You think Waldman dismantled Corsi. Unfortunately, your standards and those of the average American are probably quite different.
I'm sure any Right Wingers who saw Larry King thought Corsi wiped the floor with Waldman. But that's almost beside the point. The people who are going to read this crap are already not going to vote for Obama. So the book probably doesn't actually persuade anyone. The real damage is done when Corsi appears on Larry King and other shows and the print media cover the "story." That's why these tactics can be so effective. Corsi creates a stench that ends up sticking to Obama, not because any of it is true, but because people simply come to associate Obama with the accusations. Since presidential elections are, for the most part, decided by idiots -- those much coveted "undecideds." They aren't undecided because they are really torn between two candidates on the issues. They're undecided because they're ignorant and don't pay attention to hard facts. When the time comes for them to decide, I fear what they remember are the accusations, not the rebuttals, which in all probability they never heard.
The key to successful attacks isn't that they're right or that Democrats (or fair-minded Republicans -- of which there are precious few) effectively rebut the accusations. It's simply getting them heard. The MSM will always act as an effective conduit for the worst slime, and in doing so they ensure that the attacks are successful. Will these defeat Obama? They could, but rest assured they will hurt. I think Obama, instead of his surrogates, should respond directly to Corsi and call him exactly what he is -- a liar who does writes these books to make money and destroy candidates.
What the MSM need to do, but never will, is to identify the attacks for what they are: partisan filth disguised as "reporting." Rather than be polite to Corsi and his ilk, they need to treat them with the contempt they deserve.

Doesn’t it seem like Obama and his supporters in the press are over-learning the Swift Boat lesson with their reaction to the Corsi book? Kerry’s original instinct in 2004 was to ignore the attack so as not to draw more attention to it. The substance of it turned out to be too powerful for that to work, and he realized that only after it had gone on too long. But the substance this time is rather different: the book may well be full of charges of various sorts, but it won’t be anything like people from Obama’s past offering evidence that explodes the essential storyline of his campaign. Wouldn’t the Kerry reaction be more politically astute here? Doesn’t the “answer every charge so you won’t be swiftboated” principle get the book a whole lot more attention than it would otherwise get without really preventing or averting much real harm?
If it is full of blatant lies, maybe Obama can sue him for slander. It's pretty apparent that Corsi's only in it for the money...he knows if he writes an anti-Obama book (as he did with Kerry) that the right wing nuts will eat it up. So, why not hit him hard where it really counts...the wallet.

Is there some overarching reason why Obama or a proxy can't go after Corsi (or their publisher) for libel or slander? I know it would be a distraction during the election season, but I'm not sure Obama would even have to do it himself, or even follow it through until after the election. Given that the counterpoints are that cut-and-dried, it would be a powerful statement that his lies are so bald-faced that they are easily challenged with the truth.

Corsi is in the business of character assassination. It would be nothing to prove malice of intent in court. Obama has the means, he should immediately sue Corsi and the publisher for slander and defamation, naming the MSM and press outlets as accessories to the act. Given the time-critical nature of things, as part of the suit he should obtain a court order prohibiting further distribution of the book until a jury renders a verdict, and/or also ordering that all these propaganda networks that are in collusion with this process of character assassination be compelled to donate several hours of morning, evening and late night prime time to Obama, at dates of his choosing, to refute - in depth, the lies of this carefully orchestrated slander campaign.
As much as I don't like Corsi, I also don't like Obama.
With that said, there's an ENTIRE book full of details, and the basics are the only thing this "fight the smears" campaign dares debunk.
As far as Michelle's thesis, the "fight the smears" page doesn't address Michelle's own conclusion of the peer polling she did that revealed "her peers had lost their black identity".
And she was upset with this discovery.
People have been programmed in the US to be hypersensitive to race, and perceived "racism" when in fact it becomes an obstacle and excuse.

Under the constitution of the United States of America you have the right to praise god in the fashion that you know with out fear of persecution to para-phrase. The one thing we are sure of and people this is the most important thing, Sen. Barack Hussein Obama is an American. Born and raised. What are we going to hear next, that the Senator is some how someway connected to Alqida? This is truly an extremely low point in American history. People the rest of the world is watching to see how really stupid we are. Russia has made the move on Georgia specifically because of what we have done in Iraq. There is no more time to play. Are we as a nation going to continue to let fear and hatred rule us? Are we going to be so blinded as to let racism keep our nation from propelling itself forward to the future? Sen. Barack Obama is an American striving to serve his country in the greatest of capacities. He is running for President of the United States of America. Not President of the spitting in the spittoon contest. Our nation is facing very serious issues as is the world. As a nation must decide with this election what our role and place in the world will be for the future. Fellow Americans, I employ you to disregard these silly innuendos and force Sen. McCain to sit down with Sen.Obama in a televised debate over the issues that face America at present and the near future. Here is the twist. This debate will have two parts. Part one will be where average Americans get to call in with questions to both candidates. Part two consist of questions the Senators have for each other. I think this format will make it crystal clear who the next President of our great nation should be.

As if John Kerry and Barrack Obama know this is defamation and don't sue....they know it is not lies but truths with a mixture of critical thinking connecting the dots that can't be proven such as.....proving someone has the same beliefs as someone they call a mentor.....a reasonable person knows that is true but you can't prove it....problem is legally what a "reasonable person" would do is how the law agrees.

i was reading an article earlier about the corsi book, and came across this part of the story:
Corsi also dwells on Obama's mother marrying Obama's African father and later marrying someone from Indonesia - whom Corsi describes as "a second man of color to be her mate." The Obama campaign says the description is one of many examples of Corsi's "offensive language" in the book.
yup, very offensive... but i really think THAT is the main problem the bigots have with obama, more than his race... it's his momma... a white woman who had sexual relations with - and, to their mind, preferred the company of - men "of color"...
nobody's brought up that angle before, that i know, besides me... and i've never gotten a response to my observation...
like i said, i KNOW these people... not that they would come out and SAY it, but i do know there is quite a stigma about such relationships, and the offspring... ... you know them too...
