New Ad Slams McCain Post-Saddleback

While John McCain and Barack Obama met with Rev. Warren at the Saddleback Church this weekend, the progressive Christian PAC Matthew 25 unveiled a new ad featuring religious leaders supporting Obama. In the ad, Rev. Kirbyjon Caldwell - the Methodist minister who married Jenna Bush - takes a not-too-subtle dig at McCain over what McCain acknowledged to be his "greatest moral failing" at the forum - the failure of his first marriage.

"Including his own..." OUCH!

what are they trying to imply lol

Glad to see this ad. Watching McCain play pious peter at that "debate" was cringe inducing. Worse was the way the audience lapped it all up.

McLaren's cool. It's telling that the more intellectual guys like McLaren, Wallis, Campolo, etc are for Obama, but the kneejerk reactionary fundamentalists are pushing for McCain. No surprise, just telling.

Cue more Sean Hannity edits of this video with Rev Wright Rev Wright Rev Wright but but but Rev Wright...

Sorry, but I don't see how this ad slams McCain if it doesn't even mention him. The Amurkin public just isn't that smart and that's no joke.

Private lives are just that. I take McAyn's word, that was his greatest moral failing. Period.

Reagan dumped his first wife (and began his affair with Nancy before he was divorced), so that it makes it alright. Family values only apply to other people.

But, but... Rev. Warren did ask the candidates how they feel about adultery, right? Since this was a "values summit" or whatever?

Please tell me he didn't somehow forget to ask about adultery.

Heard a story on All Things Considered from NPR today that explained how Cindy McCain has been lying about being an "only child" when in fact she has a half-sister whom her family essentially disregarded most of their life. Of course, this half-sister didn't get any of the beer distribution wealth. Surprise!

How bout start slamming the American Flag flying over places like Gitmo and Abu Ghriab?

America needs to spend a little time on the couch reassembling its shattered psyche.

Who ever dreamed that we'd see the day when pundits and politicians would be debating this kind of soap?

Oh Snap!

I consider "faith" as a disease, in Bill Mahers words, "a neurological disorder".

When I see preachers and theologians, I see parasites, and with a sweet quote from the New Testament, "a pit of viper...who

walk in the market place with their heads held high...place burdens on other men's backs."

WHY THE FUCK does Rev. Saddleback Mountain get an hour long Q&A with the candidates, and working men and women don't.

Let me at both of them for an hour!!! You will hear some serious questions then!!!

Obama Question: Where in the constitution does it say the President and the Congress can weaken the 4th Amendment?

McCain Question: Who would Jesus bomb?

We don't know who we are anymore in this country.

But- but- he was in a prison camp for FIVE YEARS!

Everyone knows the Bible has a little asterisk at the end that says "exemptions granted for POW status".

The bottom line is that religion has no place in American politics. False News screams about abortion and gay marriage every election cycle, which is a call for religious conservatives to vote like lemmings. The "purpose driven" Obama campaign is participating in forums like Warren's in an effort to capture some of those voters.

i know it is a subtle point...
but is there a difference between (blaming "the marriage")

"yes i take responsibility that my marriage did not work out"

and

"yes my wife was less good looking, and gimpy, so i started fucking someone else until my marriage collapsed"

because working men and women don't count in a fascist country. they are useful as chattel, fodder or sweaty raw material, but not much more.

Human beings are scary. They are driven by ego, desires, safety and hunger.

A nasty recipe if there ever was one.

A lesson to us all remember you past will catch up with you. John McCain wanted it all and lived in the fast lane with the right people to get what he wanted. He saw that being a POW was working and he milked it for all it was worth. He saw his wife and kids as burdens and a young rich Girl as his meal ticket to success. Those children never had a Father and his wife had to be both to their kids. Yes John lived rich and had kids again but he was now living the life he wanted. He was using his POW experience to get in office and his wife's money to make sure it happen. Cindy got what she wanted too. Look when your rich you can buy anything you want. Little did Cindy know old John was still looking and has been named in the Palfrey case as with the young look alike Cindy. It's a lesson of old a man treats you the way he treated you when you met. Cindy could have done much much better but she saw something or person she wanted and brought it. Now McCain has to live with the facts of his life that don't live up to a true Christians teachings.

It's really nice to see the brainwashed, who dedicate their lives to pushing fables and fairy tales on people, show they really care.

McCain's first marriage wouldn't have been a failure if he hadn't failed in using good judgment in keeping it in his Size XL "DEPENDS". This whoremonger has never learned that lesson. Just recently, he was caught with his new squeeze - galpal - Vicky Iseman and I wonder what they were doing?????? (wink wink). See, he still hasn't matured to the point where he can keep it in his pants. And we need this characteristic in our next President?? I think not!

BREAKING NEWS:

On the Rachel Maddow show a caller said she had video of McCain at the venue which proves he was not in a motorcade en route to the venue. He was there for hours. The woman said she was pulled over for following mcCain too closely. This was at 6:35 DST eastern time.

Mr. Amato, please contact the Rachel Maddow show. David Bender is guest-hosting and he took the call and asked the caller to put the video on YouTube.

In fact, in his book, McCrotchety calls himself basically a 'whoremonger' with his need for multiple women. Everyone knows the saga of how he filandered around with Botox Cindy for her money, much to the chagrin of the Reagans who still have no use for the man. He left a crippled wife and children to cheat with Cindy. Is this the kind of sleazy woman we want as our First Lady? I think not.

Oh man and you think Christians are delusional.

It was probably Rick Warren's wife calling...hahahahaha! Does anyone trust Rachel Maddow at all? I rest my case.

This is the hallmark of the MO of typical GOP frauds: Insert the doubt/insert the shill. But the american people are smarter than that. We KNOW McNasty didn't play fair and was prompted out the whazoo. This man is totally incapable of thinking on his feet without reading a teleprompter. If he could, he'd be seen doing it during his speeches. McCain is a fraud; Warren is a fraud; Rachel Maddow is a fraud; and this caller is a fraud. They have much too much to lose and this is typical GOP damage control.

Hmm, lets see how much damage a self admitted failing will do. Compared to ads showing Barack Obama telling every person who thinks he changed his position that they are just simply delusional. Along with ads showing Barack Obama saying one thing now, telling people who say he is not telling the truth are liars, and then having physical evidence of his lies put up next. I am sorry, but while this might effect a tiny part of a single percent of people to simply not vote for McCain, this type of advertisement pales in comparison to the damage that Barack Obama did to himself in the Saddleback.

Happy losses peoples.

As President, Obama will stand by my family? WTF does that MEAN?
Does that mean any more than Bush saying he stands with Georgia, or some fat fuck in a hummer with a magnetic ribbon that says, "I stand with our troops?"

Whatever, it's the silly season, so I hope it's effective with sordida plebs (When it comes to this kind of crap, I admit I'm an elitist).

I consider “faith” as a disease, in Bill Mahers words, “a neurological disorder”.

That would make you a bigot, just like Mr. Maher.

As to the ad, it's a good'un. Too bad they couldn't have found an imam to participate. That REALLY would've twisted the moonbats' panties in a knot.

"As President, Obama will stand by my family? WTF does that MEAN?"

It means he probably won't dump his current wife for a beer heiress, that's all....

I bet 2/3 of the marriages in this country end in divorce. And if they start to slam and bang over divorce they are going to get blowback. That's something neither candidate should want.

This whole Saddleback controversy seems silly to me. But a couple of things stand out. The campaign to discredit McCain's success is gaining traction in the MSM, which delights me to no end. It's a very GOP way to undermine any advantage McCain might have derived from the event, whether it is true or not. The left is fired up by McCain possible cheating, and independents are left to weigh whether or not McCain has to resort to dirty tactics just to excel in an event he was expected to do better in. For the right, any defense of McCain keeps the issue in the news and the differing stories and denials, reported timelines, etc. give the appearance they are covering something up.

i loved the ad.

No, that's standing by HIS family. Not MINE.
Bullshit is bullshit, even when it comes from my candidate of choice.

I know Carol McCain gets enough play in the Democratic press, but for those within the mainstream news media's cone of silence, are they even aware of the event, other than that, like 60% of Americans, McSame had a previous marriage?

If not, that ad is merely preaching to the converted.

With the economy in decline, on going wars ,massive deficit spending at the federal level, millions without health coverage, loss of good jobs, and the decline of the middle class, amongst a host of other issues. The only issue that appears to get any play is GOD.

I'm open to kos's argument that Saddleback was well worth Obama's doing for one primary reason - to show that he not only is not a muslim but rather is also a Christian with a view of himself in relation to Christianity that is understandable, believable, and sympathetic, even to hard core Christians. Regardless of who "won" the round.

Republican policy has left this nation a crisis zone.
Why are the Dems playing this Rightwing game?
Religion needs it's ass kicked out of policy now.
Superstition should not even have a seat at the table of public policy.
What good has come from the party of family values?
Wars, debt, hate mongering, fear mongering, loss of liberty,
torture, ignorance, and hyper partisanship.
Now how are these values worth espousing?

Wee Mousie @ 51:

Wee Mousie, great metaphor. The hows and whens of media self-censorship form a great part of the cultural brainwashing process that is euphemistically called socialization (of a child). Self-censorship is also a mirror that reflects social boundaries, at least as perceived by the media.

Edwards was in the MSM cone of silence for a while, but was eventually outed.
I think the Carol angle is tough, simply because the 'Pubs will effectively use the "he was just out of torture camp" rebuttal.
I personally think the "Cindy, You C&nt" angle holds great Rovian promise.

So, drill down to the emetic question: What Would Rove Do?

Re #57, here's a proposal:

Ask him, Yes or No?
One person tried but was not answered because he had the poor tactics to use the word cunt in public (oops).

There's a better way:

"Senator McCain, George Carlin, who recently passed away, had a famous routine called 'The Seven Words You Can't Say On Television'. (Forgot his name) has written a biography that claims you called your wife one of those seven words. Did you or did you not call your wife one of those seven words?"

The key is to get him on record as Yes or No.
Without that, you've got bupkus.
With a clear No, you have a gauntlet thrown at the reporters who saw it.

It is legal and does not endanger tax exempt status. Matthew 25 is a group that was formed independent of any one church or denomination. It's purpose is to advertise on Christian networks. This is something that had been done before for repub candidates but never for the dems. I think it is high time and I'm hoping the message will reach enough undecided voters to make a difference.

Sad but true... how easily the children are deceived.

The fact that feeding the poor, housing the widows and orphans, and ministering to the prisoners is seen as a "liberal" agenda and not a christian one is very telling of the christian right. I don't think they recognize their own doctrine anymore (none so blind I guess...)

"You can learn a lot about a man's character based on how he treats his family." Amen to that. Hey you, reading this: what have you done for your family today?

In today L.A. Times:

"I could not vote for an atheist because an atheist says, 'I don't need God,' " Warren said. "They're saying, 'I'm totally self-sufficient by [myself].' And nobody is self-sufficient to be president by themselves. It's too big a job."

The forum came under criticism from one organization that issued a statement Sunday complaining that presidential candidates should not have to answer questions concerning their faith.

"Campaign 2008 is starting to feel like a Sunday-school Bible drill," said the Rev. Barry W. Lynn, executive director of Americans United, a group that advocates for separation of church and state. "I don't see what good it will do for the American people to again hear the candidates spout pious platitudes about their favorite Bible verses or how devout they are."

Obama should have opted instead for a meeting where there was a greater diversity of religions represented so that others of different religions could have asked questions. A number of spectators have indicated that McCain's answer on when life begins was enough for them to vote for him (I know they would have anyway). Just disappointed that Obama, by his agreement to meet there, for whatever good reason, elevates Warren to some sort of greater status, where to many of us he is merely the purveyor of myth and folly.

The first quote, pretty well would eliminate anybody as a serious candidate, that isn't willing compete for who is more religious than who. So just how much faith did you see from Bush over the past seven and a half years? Ha, he fooled you. He's no more Christian than I am, (couldn't be less). You hardly ever went to church and he certainly did not exhibit the principle of their Jesus.

Nothing we can do about this, because there are enough people that either are Christian or profess to be (look at the polls of those who claim to be, but admit that they do not go to church at all. Until those (latter) get real and admit they are not really, we are "a christian nation".

Rev. Lynn is hardly objective.

He's not the head of "Americans United"

I believe Sen. Obama has a much higher family values than Sen. McCain. He speaks highly of his wife. Sen. Obama shows alot of love for his children and he is truly a family man. Sen. He also has a better understanding of the injustices in the United States and in other foreign countries.
Sen. Obama has had to struggle to make it economically. He also did not have his father in his life. Sen. Obama has lived the life of a struggling person. He is more in touch with the average middle-class Americans than Sen. McCain. Sen. McCain never had to struggle in life. He left his sick wife for a rich woman Cindy McCain who is half his age and he is for support of special interest groups and lobbyist. Sen. McCain doesn't have any concerns for minority groups nor other religions. After all minority groups and people of other faiths are citizens of America. They are Americans as well as the religious right. We all are Americans. My faith is with Sen. Obama.

To all the religious right
All people are equal in the eyes of God. This is the first Amendment of the constitution. All Americans should be treated with respect. Sen. McCain did not bother to address the Unity Convention which consist of all the minority groups (American Indians, Asians, Afro- Americans, etc.) and people of other faith such as mainstream muslims, athiest etc. They all pay taxes and are hard working people in this country. We should focus on issues that we all have in common instead of focusing on issues that divides us. The only way we can survive is all of us uniting together. I am with Sen. Obama.

I don't see how any one would feel that a person that breaks up his family for a trophy wife, votes for aggressive war, wants to pollute the environment rather than fight big oil, and degrades people is a Christian? McCain would rather win an election than live by Christ's word.

"true Leadership is the capacity to influence others through inspiration generated by passion motivated by a vision birth by a conviction produced by a purpose." The foundation of Leadership is Character and Character is to set values without compromise. These are qualities embedded in Sen. Obama and is unique to Sen. Obama. People may say that Sen. Obama is inexperience but he brings integrity and a new kind of policy for dealing with other nations. If America is to survive we must adopt a new foreign policy. Sen. Obama has a much better insight into how these different countries operate. These evil terrorist and countries needs to be attacked from the grassroots. Sen. Obama has the ability to infiltrate grassroots in other countries thereby eliminating the core base of terrorists group. This is the only way we can weaken terrorist groups. Also, our allies favors Sen. Obama more so I know he can convince our allies to go along with his policies. This could be done without having to resort to wars.

"You can learn a lot about a man's character based on how he treats his family." Amen to that. Hey you, reading this: what have you done for your family today?

Fuck character. All politicians are narcissists. Give me competence and statesmanship.

Crazy isn't it?
