Hang it up, Scarborough.

Joe Scarborough goes after bloggers (I mean, who else is watching your show, Joe?) on a regular basis, denigrating us as Cheetos-eating Star Wars fans living in our mothers' basements. Joe's court jester Willie Geist interviews bloggers in the DNC Big Tent, and finds very few bloggers who fit Joe's slurs.

As with most issues, what Joe says as opinion, is simply contrary to fact. Surveys of top political bloggers (here and here) in 2006 found that most are male, white, well-educated, around 45 years old, and earning above-average income. Kinda exactly like you, Joe. We also have extensive activist experience (I shook Ted Kennedy's hand at 18 and haven't really washed under the nails since), and we have an addictive level of news consumption (which is the only explanation I have as to why we get up to watch Morning Joe).

As an Ivy-educated middle-aged mother-of-three homeowner who does not own any Star Wars memorabilia, I can see why you might be jealous of bloggers, Joe. Few of us have to deal with little niggling details like dead staff in our office or having to carry the water of the Worst. President. Ever.

Also, as a blogger, I can tell you in the presence of my considerable, well-educated audience, to kiss my liberal elite blogger ass.

Well I guess that says it all!

As a former resident of Ft. Walton Beach, Florida (where the dead intern was found in Joe's office) I can say that I don't find it distasteful at all considering the bizarre happening that took place after the young woman's mysterious death.

Joe Blowhaerd is still spinnin dishonest talking points for the crumbling right wing?

Who'd a thunk he would do this now, after his disgraceful activities right before he cut and ran from congress.

Sometimes the Scar can surprise you.

I found that his praise for both Senators Clinton and Obama shortly after Mister Obama secured the nomination this evening was effusive and genuine and one of the better commentaries I've heard on either candidate.

He is a total stoner though, and if he wants any sort of a shot at redemption, I'd like to see him lead the charge and use his national platform as a bully pulpit towards towards finally decriminalizing this plant.

I'm sure he could get Pat Buchanan's help and support with this.

I can explain the addiction, for me it's easy....

It's called International Superstar Erin Burnett at 8:30 and I totally hate myself for this, in-house MSNBC party girl Courtney Hazlett.

She seems like a younger, much, much crazier version of the Faye Dunaway character in Network and looking at her I gotta wonder how much of this story is true?

Are you watching/listening MSNBC, Joe has to go,and take INTERUPTER Tweety with him. The USA is sick of his 'I think' stuff,he said today, he's a commentator and no one has said they don't like him...well...I hate to pop your ego, so let me be the first to tell you to SHUT UP!.....Don't INTERUPT K.O., because you see the ratings better than me,so just bow out, and get a radio gig in some small town on a fox station.

And for those of us who are Cheetos eating, Star Wars fans who live in our mother's basement, Scarborough:

How many character reinventions are you and Tucker Carlson are going to go through before MSNBC fires you? Glass houses, boy. At least we're honest with ourselves.

Yuk, Bluegal. You don't know where Joe's mouth has been.

The saying about "a dead girl or a live boy" isn't true of Scarborough. There was a dead girl, but no scandal. IIRC the coroner who exonerated him had been disbarred in another state.

And, however "below the belt" and distasteful, Joe Scar has gotten a pass on the dead intern in his office. Wasn't that the same summer the Gary Condit's intern went missing and that was all the news ALL THE TIME? I believe it may have been. Then again, Condit was a Democrat. Joe was (and very much still is) a Republican. So. There ya go!

Bluegal RAWKS and as for Joe, it will come back on him and soon. If the media can follow a tabloid all the way to a live baby and John Edwards, it can get through the murk to a dead woman and a live ASSHOLE, aka Smirkin' Joe Scarborough.

Nyc Labrets's picture

PJ O'Rourke, when he was recently touring for his book about the economist Adam Smith repeatedly used the line....

"My doing well doesn't negatively impact you."

As a way of saying that capitalism and our way of doing business is a viable model, which sounds great on its surface, but then I think of the thousands upon thousands of strivers that have gone through Columbia Journalism school and at the end of it there are the Tucker Carlsons and Cooper Andersons out there in front of them, who they will never get passed, no matter how much more qualified they are then those that have essentially inherited their positions through their family name.

Congressman Joe Scarborough seems to be the exception, save for that his two co-hosts are the son of a long time CBS News reporter and the daughter of a high placed government official.

Nepotism rules.

Scarborough has a "I am entitled" mentality. He has complained about security in 'Denver, perhaps he thinks he is entitled to superstar status? He has sung the praises of McCain every single day of this convention, fair and balanced be damned. K.O interrupted him and said "Jesus Joe, get a shovel" to which Joe exploded. Joe has walked off the set when Maddow corrected him. Big mouth Joe seems like trouble but the head of MSNBC has defended all of his anchors. And as far as his two sidekicks, the blonde bimbo just agrees with everything that Joe says and the baby faced frat boy sidekick was also Tucker's sidekick, enough said.

I have been in the audience in Denver for Hardball. I will say this, I was impressed on how accessible Matthews has been to the audience. He has been friendly, shaking hands, joking and signing autographs whereas Olberman can barely manage a wave to the crowd. Keith is a disappointment but I still like his quick wit on the air.

oh really's picture

Oh, c'mon. Joe Scarborough is the greatest. Just take a look at what dcmediagirl over at Larry (Moe Curly) Johnson's cesspool NoQuarter has to say about him. He's the only guy who tells it like it is.

And dcmediagirl explains herself --

"And for those of you who find my Joe love suspicious: This is a topsy-turvy election cycle. If fairness and serious analysis is found in unsuspected places so be it. At least we have someowhere [sic] to turn."

Yep, it's a topsy-turvy election season. For example, up is down, good is bad, left is right, etc.

That dust-up he had with Shuster made him look like a fool (and a big baby).

Give Dan that show and give Donahue the Hardball hour.
I can't stand that spitting, slobbering, interrupting Matthews either.
I quit watching him long ago.

From the linked article:

Indeed. On May 29, 2003, Scarborough appeared on Don Imus's radio show. While complimenting Scarborough on his sense of humor, Imus said, "Don't be afraid to be funny, because you are funny. I asked you why you aren't in Congress. You said that you had sex with the intern, and then you had to kill her." Scarborough laughed and replied, "Yeah, well, what are you gonna do?"

Sick!

Wow, that was the cast for the theater of the absurd. Living out in the toolies as I do without access to the "blessings" of cable TV I don't see these tools except on video clips (we do have high speed wireless access, go figure.)

That said, as a relative outsider to the MSM those people must not watch their own performances otherwise they'd be aware of how absolutely ridiculous they look and sound. They're trying to cast bloggers as loser freaks. Best they look in the mirror and see the loser freak looking back at them. And these people are helping shape Americans' opinions? Scary stuff.

79 year old Bob Grant is one of the most loathesome, vile, nasty and creepy right wing radio commentators on the AM dial, he's pretty much credited with creating the hate radio genre, and he now in the twilight of his career he has an evening show on WABC in NYC after Imus, Limbaugh and Hannity have had their say for the day, and about a month ago he was out and the guest hosts for the evening were....

Oh, why'd you have to go and bring up 300? Christ, both the graphic novel and film were right-wing, post-9/11 propaganda. The Persians weren't a bunch of pierced hedonists- quite the opposite! They were far more tolerant than the Spartans.

Not exactly, at least not what I read. I googled her name, Lori Klausutis. She wasn't an intern. She was a paid staffer in his District office and had been for a few years. There is no indication it was any sort of affair, but apparently Scarbourgh got a hold of some classifies documents relating to 9/11. Stuff that supposedly could be damaging to the Bush Administration....Documents that he probably should not have had access to. Anyway, Lori saw them, she died under mysterious circumstances and a second rate medical examiner called her death 'undetermined'. Did Joe kill her? Probably not. Did his overblown ego lead him to do something really stupid and dangerous, like getting a hold documents that were never meant for public consumption. Probably. I have to disagree. Joe Scarborough is the worst rightwinger on msnbc by far. Even Pat Buchanan is better than Scar. Joe Scarborough is just barely more tolerable than Glenn Beck.

He pretends (occasionally) to take a more moderate position than some in his party, but it's usually only when he's being a concern troll. Joe's been the biggest concern troll ever on any issue about Hillary - just like Limbaugh, Rove, O'Reilly, Hannity - for the past year, sometimes calling her his "girlfriend" only because he was trying to help McCain by draining money from the candidates in the primaries trying to make them go on as long as they could. My only thought is that I don't enjoy these "nyah nyah" posts on this site. They're very bitter and they always feel childish and overly defensive. I get that getting attacked by someone like Joe on no real grounds is also insulting and frustrating, but I don't feel like the tirades and digs accomplish much either.

Trust me, Tony, I thought about ignoring him but he's pulling this "Cheetos brigade" bs as a regular part of his show and I've had enough. He can bite my cheetos. Thanks for your comment. - BG

What a bunch of MSM asshats! I'm always amazed at how low MSNBC will go, yet they've got Olberman and Maddow, It's like they want to be Faux News, and oldtime CNN all at once, but with a funny spin on it like Comedy Central. Dear MSNBC, none of this works.

I don't eat Cheetos either, and I am a 68-year-old mother and grandmother who blogs every day in my own house. If it's clean, it's because I cleaned it. If there's something to eat, it's because I bought it and cooked it. I don't bother e-mailing Scarborough or Mathews any more though. I'd rather spend my time pushing back against the reactionary attitudes that are shaping my local world. That's life in a Bible belt red state where the Confederate flag still flies on public ground.

My psych analysis is that Scarborough is just another one of those guys whose physical stature gave him the idea that he is more important and more powerful than others. Like Dr. Phil. Pick on women, especially mothers, and nerdy people who don't live to Lord it over others. BTW, I went to the same high school as Willie Geist, and so did my mother two hundred years ago, so he gets a pass for associating with jerks like Tucker Carlson and Joe Scarborough.

I had addressed the dead girl comment in my comment before that one. The real problem is that the dead girl issue was never addressed. It was ignored, so I take offense that anyone would be offended for just bringing it up. They are still writing front page articles ()13 parts) about Chandra Levy seven years after the fact, but nada about Lori Klausutis.

Joe Scarborough, Willie Geist, and Mike Barnicle have berated and belittled "the cheeto brigade" of bloggers almost daily for months now. They taunt blogger almost every day. a couple months ago Barnicle had a yelling rant about bloggers in their pajamas in the parents basement and he pointed at the camera and screamed "get a life!" And the whole crew laughed and laughed all week long about it, so they've just stuck with that meme ever since.

Hey Joe...Get a show!

God, I just watched the rant v. Shuster. What. a. tool.

Oh Ha Ha Willie...maybe you can have a dead intern in YOUR office one day!

willie's picture

isn't it an elitist for someone to be putting down someone else the way joe scarborough does one a regular basis. his show is damned near unwatchable, his opinions are worthless based on little substance and his co-hosts are there to make him look good. how much does it suck to have that job. and i say this simply because i have gotten more substantative debate, information and factual knowledge from reading blogs than i have from any time spent listening to scarborough. and the morning joe coverage of this convention has been a train wreck, from the location of the broadcast to the guest and topics. to be honest my opinion is based on maybe 10 minutes of viewing spread out over three days. it is so difficult to try and eat breakfast when you are watching a show like this.

The daily show is funny because they ridicule whomever they interview. Willie didn't have the balls to either make fun of the bloggers or make fun of Scabrow. Nothing

Yuk, Bluegal. You don't know where Joe's mouth has been.

The saying about "a dead girl or a live boy" isn't true of Scarborough. There was a dead girl, but no scandal. IIRC the coroner who exonerated him had been disbarred in another state.

I'd be afraid to meet Scarborough. His cognitive dissonance must be very uncomfortable.

Paul's picture

Scarborough is just a GE pitbull on crack. The 5 corporations, 7 if you include the Sinclair Group and NPR, that run the propaganda outlets that control all mass-consumed information are all scared that there is any remaining vestige of a forum for free speech and legitimate journalism. when you see a hack, probable murderer like Scarborough spewing lies, the only purpose of which is to manipulate and disinform, you can't write it off as being the mere rantings of a dishonest scumbag. Scarborough keeps his job because he represents the views of his employer. Because, that employer includes one or two token legitimate journalists among its stable of hack propagandists doesn't mean that it is interested in truthfully informing the public; the tokens are merely employed and tolerate so that the propaganda outlet can maintain a minimum public pretense that it is actually serving the public's need for factual information.

Scarborough is a low-life, but it is his employet that is the real problem.

Who the hell is Joe Scarborough? What makes him so qualified to do his job? He frankly seems like an idiot. There are many more people, maybe some of these bloggers that are more qualified to do his job. Lets look at Joe's biography:

> he went to the academic powerhouses of the University of Florida and Alabama... wow and whippy....!!
> a lawyer who really did not have much of a law career.... what did he do as a lawyer? practically nothing....
> became a congressman and was swept into power by Gingrich and their unfullfilled contract with America. he never had any serious opposition in any of his elections.
> What did he do as a congressman? what were his major achievements? Nothing! he was on a lot of committees, but he is certainly was not one of the giants of the 90s politicial scene... just another Delay disciple who wanted to basically shut down many of the programs and institutions that this country was founded on... a disciple of a conservative ideology that has not worked.. conservatives scream about supposive "big" government, but are the first to look to it to bail them out when they get in trouble... look at the current mortgage crisis and Bear Stearns...
> he cheated on his first wife and two kids of 13 yrs with a former congressional committee staffer... another 90s family values guy that was a true hypocrite...
> is now a professional complainer on MSNBC... his show is frankly fairly lame... not very ground breaking. nothing new and not particularly inspiring television. I suppose he represents this so-called angry white men class... but, what are they so angry about? they have all the cards in this society... i suppose they just want to keep it that way...

Joe Scarface's problem is that he equates anyone who calls his bullshit with the standard generalization that anyone on a blog is of similar ilk. Sorry, but you have a range of folks across a broad spectrum on blogs, and probably to his distaste, the MSM just doesn't have the power over the common folk like they used to in shaping opinion and memes. So him and other snobs like him on any of those cable news networks are going to continue to fade away with a huge chip on their shoulders.

There's a severe lack of a sense of humor on this site. Everything was done with tongue placed firmly in cheek, and it's sad that you don't acknowledge that. i'm thinking if that segment offended you you take yourselves a little to seriously.

I think those of us on the left should just leave this kind of stuff be. The conservative right have talked so much trash about blogging without actually understanding what they are talking about, that they have basically accomplished whipping their constituency into their latest hate/fear of the internet in general. It's feckin' hilarious! Let them waste time with their gross underestimations, and to quote a phrase from Rachel Maddow the other day, the right's "post-rational" thinking about the internet as a tool and resource. Just think, years from now we can all sit back and have a hearty chuckle when the republicans finally learn how to log on, and with the exuberance of a man fresh off a glory hole headshot in an airport bathroom, run around like they just discovered fire. As a proud liberal and somewhat rational human being, I personally will laugh and laugh and laugh and laugh.....and laugh even lil bit more after all the aformentioned laughing when this future TBA event actually occurs. Keep in mind what Bill Clinton said last night about since the Reagan era this Bush presidency is the actual ultimate realization of the agenda conservatives fought for decades to accomplish. Look at what we got. When do we realize that the republican party is a Closeted Progressive Taliban in suits. Hopefully there will be change so we can actually laugh at it later. Peace

I'm not inclined to be quiet when a stereotype based on one of my hobbies is used to denigrate me or others.

When Lucasfilm had stormtroopers accompanying George Lucas at the 2007 Tournament of Roses Parade, Bob Eubanks dipped into the same well as Scarborough, ignoring the notes which his co-host had clearly read, to remark, "These guys need to get real jobs."

We are professionals who happen to enjoy Star Wars and the precision work that goes into our costumes. We are parents, teachers, corporate executives, doctors, lawyers, software engineers, policemen, firemen, and even military personnel (and, yes, that includes troops in Iraq).

It's humorous when the setting is a science-fiction convention. Lord knows I've gotten my share of, 'Aren't you a little short for a stormtrooper?'

It's not humorous when the stereotype is being used to dismiss the views of a vocal and increasingly powerful segment of the community.

The two things that struck me about the clip were (1) couldn't he think of anything beyond Cheetos, Star Wars/Trek, D&D and mom's basement? No creativity, no range. I think it could have been an amusing segment if he hadn't just asked the same four questions of each person he harrassed. and (2) Did he seriously think Planned Parenthood would suggest protecting oneself with ... matches? How long had he had that and not figured out what it was and what it meant. What a knucklehead.

And well done with the "Clueless Joe" appellation.
