Politico's Ben Smith mocks RedState's false claims
By SilentPatriot Wednesday Sep 03, 2008 3:59pmToo good to pass up.
Breaking: Phone book reveals Palin phone number
RedState's Erick Erickson has a fevered take on our story on Tony Knowles' two-year-old opposition research book on Sarah Palin under the heading "Democrats Release Sarah Palin's Social Security Number."
His item is so wildly misleading that it's hard to know where to start, but the headline seems like a good place. First, if he knows that Democrats released it, he has better sources than I do.
Second, the Social Security umber is missing its last four digits. That is, it's already been redacted, in an apparent excess of caution by whoever prepared it from public record. You can't get very far with a five-digit Social Security number. (Similarly redacted Social Security numbers are available for a small fee on such sinister tools as Lexis-Nexis.)
The item's first sentence is also inaccurate. "The Politico has received an opposition research file from the Alaska Democrats."
The notion that we received the file from the Alaska Democrats appears to come from sources inside Erickson's head.

For a good time, call Sarah.
Wow....it contained the first five digits....that narrows it down to a one in ten thousand chance of guessing the right number....She and 9,999 other people are in danger of potential identity theft!
The fun has just begun. While Obama and Biden talk about being "nice" and how they just ain't gonna attack anyone the rightwing machine is going to tear them apart for the next two months. This is just the beginning. It's really sad to watch.
yahoo has a story about palin's first solo appearance and she takes a swipe at Sen. Obama's experience.
I hope the press and just about everybody else just hammers these losers on just about everything. Still no substance, no solutions from the "russia is my next door neighbor" governor and she wouldn't take questions from reporters. So, she'll shoot a moose but won't answer questions. talk about character.
"Erickson concludes:
It is atrocious that the Democrats would not only seek out Sarah Palin's Social Security number, but release it in opposition research to the press.
We need to know who did this. We also need to know what happened. We also need to know if it was used to bolster the Democrats' opposition research."
This is important enough that it should be placed in line right after the investigation into who released Valerie Plame's status as a CIA operative.
If you know the state (Idaho) and year (1964) someone was born, you can, with quite a bit of certainty, figure the first 5 (or more) digits of almost anyone's SSN out. It truly is a crappy secret identifier. Which is fine, it was never designed to be one; except foolish people (like banks) started using it that way.
Breaking News: Jack Abramoff sentenced for four years.
What is Politico?
SARAH PALIN IS IRRELEVANT -- LET'S GET REAL FOR A MOMENT
Assuming, for the sake of discussion, the best case scenario for McCain and he wins ALL the deeply red states AND AK, AZ, TX, MO, IN, WV and GA, which he should do, AND also the states of NV, MT, ND, SD, CO, VA, NC and NH, which he shouldn"t do, in order to reach 270 electoral votes he"d have to ALSO win either OH and PA or OH and FL or PA and FL. Go to the electoral-vote.com website and make a realistic evaluation. Anybody want to give me odds on McCain being able to do that?
Ben Smith is getting too uppity for my tastes.
Chris Mathews is arguing with Pat Buchanan. Chris, this is your show. Kick the bum out! Buchanan is cussing Mathews because Chris is backing him into the corner. Buchanan thinks everyone is being mean to Palin and she is his girl! He found out she voted for him in his race for the presidency.
Kick him out Chris! Don't let him ruin your show. I can hardly wait til someone pokes Buchanan's ugly repug face.
Go get him Chris!! Tell him to shut the f**k up!!! Pat is getting all red in the face. Maybe he will stroke out! Think I heard Buchanan tell Michelle Bernard she wasn't important!!!
Palin blames Obama for the truth told about her and her family by the responsible media http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080904/ap_on_el_pr/cvn_palin
How Rovian of her.
Beyaaaach.
P.D. @ 7:
Shoot, now Fox is gonna have to delay their "Mornings With Jack" show.
osage @ 9:
I'm not clear what America you're thinking of, but I live in TX. It is a deeply red state, as is, I believe AZ. And if you don't remember the elections of 2000 and 2004, here's a reminder: FL/2000 massive election shenanigans; OH/2004 massive election shenanigans. Both states were "won" by Bush. You can believe it's impossible for McCain to win, but I won't believe it until the supreme court awards the election to Obama.
osage @ 9:
Well, that all depends on whether the "straight talk express" starts picking up steam due to Palin or whatever, doesn't it? I'm not about to call this one in the bag!
theWalrus@13, Don't worry. I'm sure when he gets out, they will throw the arms open to him. Don't forget, Rove is a guest polital guru or something and he's a criminal.
My beef with Palin is she and everyone around her is saying "go ahead and hit anyone you want and when they hit back, you can cry about them hitting a girl". And she'll even cry about other girls pulling the same trick. Ugh.
Ruthless People @ 12:
Yeah, the facts about her family are his fault.

Still, I'd REALLY like to see HRC take some big swings at Palin.
I'll reliece the first 3 of EVERYONE'S SSN!!!

Good god, Pat is easy. Palin probably tells all the former candidates she voted for them.

Easy to sling shit. Easy not to take questions from reporters. What a bulldog. Fucking Hell.

Here. Here is the first 3 of everyone's SSN
Happy now?

Who's to say Abramhoff doesn't get a pardon from the President? Bets, anyone?
CMINCA @ 21:
Was the moose named Rush?
CMINCA@21, Palin, like all Repugs are cowards. Oh sure they love to talk about religion or guns. But healthcare and other things that, you know, we peons really care about. 911 and terror! Is their response.
All you have to do with Buchanan is tie his hands behind his back and he will shut up.
Re: crappy SSN security, all charge card transactions now record only the last four digits, and that is often the case now also when an SSN is referenced in order to be 'secret'. If such a document is found in Palin's trash, then putting two and two together, you get a new identity... That is, if you care to be identified with her. That, I can do without.
Don't know how many here are in-demand public speakers.
I am within my field.
I've learned over almost 40 years that audiences respond to what they perceive as genuine, honest.
Classes, btw, want genuine + clear, simple logic.
surfjac@26, Bush is going to have writers cramp by the time he leaves office. I guess that is what happens when you surround your entire Administration with criminals.

How about Gloria Steinem? http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/commentary/la-oe-steinem4-2008sep04,...
Palin: wrong woman, wrong message
Sarah Palin shares nothing but a chromosome with Hillary Clinton. She is Phyllis Schlafly, only younger.
----------------------
C&L, I apologize for posting this in a second thread, but it really is a good article, unemotional, with some facts about Palin I wasn't aware of such as "She was elected governor largely because the incumbent was unpopular, and she's won over Alaskans mostly by using unprecedented oil wealth to give a $1,200 rebate to every resident. Now she is being praised by McCain's campaign as a tax cutter, despite the fact that Alaska has no state income or sales tax."
Anyone see Gingrich on Jon Stewart last night? That guy is immense - competes with the GoodYear blimp.
Here's "The Red State Update" on Sarah Palin's speech last night:

P.D. @ 28:
I don't think she is a coward. I think she is excessively ambitious (given her limited experience and abilities) and unquestioningly compliant to her party and her religious leaders. As I've said in other threads, she is the Stepford Candidate.
@36, you think she could be robot?
CMINCA @ 36:
Palin is excessively ambitious?
Lots of folks here, regardless of education and background, would have been infinitely better presidents than shrub.
CMINCA @ 36:
McCain better get a food taster...
CMINCA @ 33:
great article, thanks for posting it. Yes, I was thinking of the original Daddy's girl, Phylis Schlafly myself. Gloria nails it.
mudlock @ 6:
I'm (and two of my seven siblings) would be exceptions to your rule. The three of us have consecutive SSNs.

words dont convey the messy sickening disgusting reality of human life snuffed out by bullets and bombs.

I'll have more to say about Sarah Palin's speech at some point tomorrow - I saw it live, from the press stand in St. Paul, which was perhaps not the ideal venue from which to judge its television impact - but based on the reactions I've heard and read to date, let me just reiterate the advice that Reihan offered to Democrats when she became McCain's pick for veep: Do not attack her. Stop referring to her as a just a small-town mayor and a neophyte governor who's unqualified to be President; in fact, stop referring to her at all. Attack John McCain, John McCain, and John McCain. Attack him all day, all night, and on weekends too. Behave as though Sarah Palin does not exist. Pray that the media will find some Palin-related scandal even more shocking than the perfervid theories aired this week (they'll be looking for one, no doubt), and in the event that they fail to do so, do not under any circumstances allow yourselves to be drawn any deeper into a debate (which the McCain campaign plainly wants to have) over the relative qualifications and accomplishments of Barack Obama and the Republican vice-presidential nominee. Nothing that's happened this week has changed the fact that it's going to be very, very hard for the Democrats to lose a race between Obama and McCain - and as a result, the Obama-Biden ticket has vastly more to gain from changing the subject away from Sarah Palin than they do from placing her candidacy, her qualifications and her background front and center in this race.

you think bush is gonna sign pardons ???
he's gonna get a rubber stamp that says "Pardoned" and stamp it on all his minions foreheads'
abu gonzo says that this will hold up in court
The first time I almost quit RedState (before firmly quitting few weeks back) it was because of the reaction I got when I dared say how horrible I think Lee Greenwood's "God Bless the USA" is as a work of art.
BTW, Erick happens to be a member of the Macon, Georgia city council. He didn't use to post things like this but, hey, there it is.
