Fake Troops, Fake Support, Sanitized War
Brandon Friedman at VetVoice notes that for its "Pledge of Allegiance video" on Tuesday night, the Republican National Convention used stock footage of a staged military funeral, along with actors - fake soldiers and a staged military funeral instead of the real thing.
Brandon writes:
The issue here isn't that the RNC used actors in what might have been a haste. Rather, the underlying problem is that Bush and McCain supporters don't like to deal with the messy reality of warfare that genuine troops bring to the table. That is, they feel compelled to stage a funeral with actors. Because to show a real military funeral--with the heaving chests of a broken family clutching a flag-draped coffin containing the pieces of their dead soldier--might just make the funny hat-clad, stupid button-wearing audience blanch. And that doesn't make for good TV. Plus, people just wouldn't go for it. So they use sanitized actors.
But this is an insult to the military. The use of actors shows an unwillingness to face up to what they've done--to the military and to the nation. And it shows that the only way to keep up support for the war is to hide its reality from the American people.
If I said that something like this surprised me, though, I'd be lying. But then, this is also why troops overseas are donating to Obama at a six to one rate over McCain. They're tired of being treated like this.
I'd add that its another example of the glorification of war - something that can only be done by sanitizing it - that McCain says he hates but that Republicans indulge in at every turn. Even some on the Right have previously noted McCain's love for warmongering.
Meanwhile, the wars that Bush involved America in continue to take their toll. Army leaders said today that soldier suicides this year could surpass the record rate of last year and attributed the increase directly to a force strained by two wars.
As of the end of August, there were 62 confirmed suicides among active duty soldiers and Guard and Reserve troops called to active duty, officials said. Another 31 deaths appear to be suicides but are still being investigated.
If all are confirmed, that means that the number for 2008 could eclipse the 115 of last year — and the rate per 100,000 could surpass that of the civilian population, Col. Eddie Stephens, deputy director of human resources policy, said at a Pentagon news conference.
With Richard Holbrooke warning that, because of Republican incompetence, Afghanistan is shaping to be a 'long war' which will outlast even Vietnam's 14-year term, we can see clearly where a McCain-Palin administration would lead - and it isn't a glorious future unless the thousands of dead, crippled and grieving are to be played by actors too. It bears repeating - in the first four days of the Republican convention, Afghanistan didn't rate a single mention. That's shameful.

Character. What kind of character does this show us. What are the republicans all about if not lies, deceit, half-truths, and selfish, money grubbing interests.
Wonder how many military funerals McCain has attended.
According to Andrew Sullivan, Mr Palin's former business partner has made an emergency request to the court to seal his divorce papers. Sounds interesting.
I consider myself an individual with some "intestinal fortitude", but I could not watch the Repub Convention. I started
and had to turn it off. I have people at work who are standard American sheep- uneducated, uninformed, bigoted, walmart
shoppers...and they were saying McCain's speech was incredibly bad.
I feel we have this election won, and not because Obama is such a great candidate, but that McCain is so bad in so
many ways.
NOW WE HAVE TO MAKE OBAMA DO THE RIGHT THING AND BE A TRUE PROGRESSIVE!
John Bush at it again!
Big Phonies. God, I'm sick of it.
I hope the soldiers' votes get counted. I hope someone is keeping their eye on that ball.
If Obama had used footage of fake troops at a fake funeral, we would NEVER hear the end of it.

Well...at this point...nothin the repugs do shocks me anymore...
Obama may not be a warmonger, but large corporations call the shots.
The Pentagon exists to protect and serve their interests.
"War is cruelty, and you cannot refine it."
I could see it being an issue of a family's privacy, but there are other ways to signify the cost in lives and sacrifice without using a staged funeral - a shot of Arlington National Cemetery, perhaps. Any of a number of suitable memorials to other wars, which would also imply a proud history.
But, no - the Republicans have turned service, especially military service, into a fracking joke.
=====
Oh, Christ on a pogo stick ... Palin & McCain are making their campaign appearance, and Palin just asserted that MILLIONS of people were saved by McCain's support of the Iraq War. Because, you know, that evil uppity elitist, Barack Obama, he has the power of life and death at a single NO vote.
Typical republican slime machine at work... can't face the realities of all of the lives they've shattered and destroyed, so they play pretend and fantasy... the avarice, unbounded lust for money and power, the stupidity of most everything they say, the overabundance of lies every single time a republican opens his or her mouth... They MUST be stopped this election. If not, I fear for what will become of all of us, and I'm talking about the entire world in that "us".
If we only lived in a country with free press we would have over four thousand films to chose from. To bad they didn't use footage of PAT TILLMAN'S funeral, that was spectacular, but I guess they have already played that to the hilt.
We have to do whatever we can to stop this madness. As Obama said, ENOUGH!
Donate, write letters to the editor, register new voters, volunteer to drive people to the polls, whatever we can do, we must do it.
No way! No how! No McCain!
Miatch @ 7:
Exactly!! These people use it, and suddenly the Republicans are the true patriots. Patriots?? Are you kidding me?!
Meanwhile, my dad has officially gone to the dark side. He was spewing Fox lines at me. "I have a gut feeling that history will honor Bush," he said, "because Truman had the lowest ratings...(continue bullshit)..." Unfortunately for him, I'm an historian and immediately responded, "HARRY Truman? Umm...You might want to rethink that."
And the insanity continues...

well done Mr. Davis!
I worked for a caterer this week at the RNC.
was with many members of congress during Palin's speech.
they enjoyed her zingers but were openly cynical about most of the content. especially the ANWR drilling.
one of my colleagues was staffing a large VIP area and had several guests (non-politicians) tell her that Obama has their vote after the BS they heard this week. good news, eh?
in conclusion, when you are about to embark on one of the largest institutional transformations in history, be sure to have a 72 year-old man at the helm.
sheesh!
There are a million things to be disgusted with about McCain. This isn't one of them. It is against regulations for uniformed military officers to appear in political ads. That is a good regulation. And it would be despicable to show a real funeral. I'd like to believe even McCain's Rovite handlers couldn't stoop that low. (Though of course I will probably be proven wrong when they stoop even lower.)

It has been my opinion, fwiw, since the beginning of this thing that it is a 'live-action movie/video game' mind set as long as the public does not see the actual dead (funerals) or brutally injured...as we did during Vietnam, and the public will not build up massive protests as happened then.

They've trashed the economy; they've looted the treasury, rolled back worker safety through lax enforcement, transferred billions to their millionaire base, cut social programs to the bone and are doing their best to roll back The Enlightenment.

The actual video is also on YouTube, but I am choosing not to link to it. Search for it and view it at your own peril.
At this point I’ll have to disagree with Friedman. The offense IS that they used actors – not real funerals, not real soldiers, not real emotional turmoil. For if this war was just, if this war had any value to America or Americans, then those that gave the ultimate sacrifice would be heroes. We would see them and say “God Bless America” – God Bless the willingness of those soldiers, those families for their contribution to that which is right, just, and true.
But it is not right, nor just, nor true.
So they have to fool their audience – just as they fooled most of this country into going to war in the first place.
Reality is a strong rhetorical tool, when it supports your cause. When it doesn’t – you’re most likely selling something.
Phony soldiers and a staged funeral isn't the only fake things going on with these republics creeps... It actually makes total sense in a sick cynical way. Fake soldiers and fake funerals goes right along with the fake change their fake war hero presidential aspirant and his fake soccer/hockey mommy vice presidential sidekick bring to the American public... Phonies and fakes.... Pretty much sums up the republic party and its politicians to me..............end-o-rant.......JD

If was a vet of my was Korea he would have been called, not a hero but a traitor, for makeing tapes for the enemy and give the NVA more than he name, rank and serial number.
did anyone other than myself, before 2-28-2008 print his Wiki bio?
just questions
Geraldo @ 34:
With all due respect, that's an oversimplification. It's the cardboard heroes that think the answer is to go to war - Wolfowitz, Cheney, Bush ... and folks like McCain, Mr. 894 out of 899 midshipmen in his class.
Of course, now that the military and political leadership is infested with Christian Dominionists who think it's God's Will that we reclaim the Middle East, it's not that every problem looks like a war, it's every war looks like Armageddon.
Author George Orwell wrote in "1984": war is peace. In an effort to fuel the engines of the war corporations, a nation must be continually at war. The rich get richer. The poor fight the wars. Ready for a draft?
A week and a half ago, idiotic Republicans were concern-trolling over the DNC: Pat Buchanan complaining that Michelle Obama didn't talk about religion, redstate.com (I think) complaining that the Democrats didn't have enough flags... I even saw one conservative expressing outrage at how "inappropriate" Malia Obama's dress was. It was ridiculous.
But to some extent, aren't we concern-trolling ourselves here? They used film footage of actors staging a fake military funeral, and we're outraged about it. But if they had showed real footage, we'd complain about how the dead were being exploited for political gain. (More on that in a minute.) If they showed neither, we'd complain that war casualties were being overlooked. So no matter how they handled it, they'd be doing the wrong thing. Maybe that's appropriate--the Iraq war and occupation are Republican abominations, and we need to hang them around their necks like a dead rotting albatross. But attack them directly on the issue itself, not in a way that comes across looking like petty quibbling.
I just find it incongruous how, on one hand, people are angry (rightly) that the GOP broke the taboo against showing actual footage of the 9/11 attacks for partisan purposes, while on the other hand, they're complaining about faked funeral footage.
"this is also why troops overseas are donating to Obama at a six to one rate over McCain"
And thus, why the wars can never end: it's an effective way of killing off supporters of Democrats!
I can't help but wonder if many of the soldier suicides are people who once pledged their life for the Republican party, and--now that they find themselves betrayed--would rather die than join up with the Democrats.
THIS just in!!!
OT...but lookit anyhow.
Totally awe-inspiring is ya ask me.

there are bigger issues than actors in a video playing soldiers. Nothing about politics is real anyway, I think we should stick to issues like how Palin has been put in a viewing chamber away from the press
I'm not going to take issue with the substance of this post -- that the Republicans don't want to deal with the real cost of war, because it's absolutely correct -- but I will swallow my pride and defend McCain on this one small point:
By law you can't use real troops for things like this.
Dr. Hemlock knows -- he was in the Army for 22 years.
Had it been me, I would simply have foregone the militaristic imagery. But given that they decided to go with it, if you don't use historical/archival material (which they certainly could have done), you're barred from using current military personnel for such purposes.

What I really despise is what they said during the staged military funeral video:
"I march in Montgomery as we boycott the bus system".
Talk about "sanitized". Let's forget the fact that the civil rights movement all started to end institutionalized segregation in the United States. Let's pretend like they marched in Montgomery to boycott one sole offender, the bus system.
Yeah. I guess they don’t want to offend the fucking racists in the audience. God forbid they faced reality and admitted that blacks were treated like animals.
How about "I march in Montgomery to end segregation and racism"?
What? Is that too much for the GOP crowd to stomach?

I think you are on topic.
The GOP uses the troops and their families are PROPS. They do not support them with kevlar vests, armored vehiches and protective equipment, health care when they return, or GI benefits. They vote against funding for all these things. And as they break the human spirit of the soldiers and their families what do they do, they send them back to War for a third, fourth or fith tour. To the GOP, the troops are just PROPS to be used to rally the ignorant.

What do you propose we do to put Diebold, Sequoia and ESS into check?
The only hope Obama will have is if all ballots are hand counted. ANY computerized counting cannot be trusted.
Sadly, Obama isn't far from McCain in his desire to confront Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan and even Russia militarily. I'm quite certain he is supporting (as are all other Congressional Democrats) the dangerously provocative billion dollars in "aid" Bush is sending to Georgia. Obama/Biden also support placing "defensive" shields all around Russia which will truly give the U.S. first strike nuclear capability over Russia. Russia will never allow this. After watching the above video, the last thing ANY American should want is U.S. global military domination! With over 5,000 active nuclear warheads in Russia we should agree to nuclear parity and stop with the wasteful militarism already. When will enough finally be enough? When it's too late?
Personally, I'd rather be voting for Scott Ritter in November. At least I feel he can be trusted. With Brezenski (who HATES Russia and is spoiling for a fight) being Obama's top foreign policy adviser, this does not give me any comfort. If Obama did an about face vis-a-vis his foreign policy positions I would consider working for him full-time.
McCain, Obama and everyone else with a microphone are ALL lying to the American people about what has happened and is happening in Georgia.
So, vote, schmote. Either candidate is pro-military and pro-Israel.

Washington. I'm from Illinois and let me tell you about Obama. He won an uncontested election and immediately announced he was running for president. We have a terrible economy and another governor going to prison but he didn't care about any of the people who elected him. He has done nothing in this state to help the people and he'll do nothing to help American. John McCain and Sarah Palin both have records of fighting bad policy and winning. Barrack has done nothing in Illinois and he'll do nothing in the White House. Good luck to all of you. I know you can't be convinced to change your opinion because ignorance is bliss. Obviously you are all very happy with a candidate as shallow as yourselves. Hillary would have been at least solid candidate that I would have considered voting for; never for Barrack.
kit wilson @ 44:
Percentage wise, there are more blacks (and minorities) in the military than there are in the general population. So the population that has gotten the shaft in the last some odd decades is the same one that is willing to die for its own country in hopes of advancing itself (with benefits like education, a career after serving etc.).
Now, let's see if some "uppity" POS like Tom Ridge or BillO' would be willing to send their own child to war.

I think there has been an attempt to 'glorify war' for some years now. I watch mostly informational television, ie the history, discovery, natgeo and learning channel and pubic TV, and of course MSNBC and CNN during the day. Has anyone else noticed the increase in the shows (some weekly) that the venues deal solely with war, warfare, past wars...violence in general and the technologies related to them? I call them testostaroni and warmonger shows. In the middle of the day during summer when kids are home and they are watching them. Also of course the increased ad spots to join the military, mostly the Army or the Marines. Oh let's not forget the weekly dose of fear from 24 that I understand depicts someone being tortured every episode.

This from Wiki, on Sadr City:
"In March 2008, during the Battle of Basra, clashes erupted in Sadr City between the U.S. and the Mahdi Army. There was intensive street by street fighting, with the U.S. relying on Stryker armored vehicles as well as M2A3 Bradley IFV and M1A2 Abrams MBT, and the Mahdi Army using improvised explosive devices allegedly smuggled from Iran.[6] The U.S. launched at least one airstrike, killing 10 reported militants. As of March 29, 2008, about 75 Iraqis have been killed and 500 injured. The Iraq Health Ministry claims these are all civilians, but the U.S. disputes this.[7]"
I just tattooed soldiers who returned from that battle, on leave for all of 18 whole days, despite being on their fourth & fifth deployments. The stories they tell are horrific; ambushes, being pinned down, being abandoned while CO's high tail it out of the line of fire, trying to rescue soldiers so badly burned their skin melted onto the rescuers' hands,... Iraqis wielding AMERICAN sniper riles, & newly made German weapons designed to disable the Bradleys. And the real scummy part, if the wounded make it clear of a fire fight, to die maybe a month later in American hospitals, they aren't counted among American losses.
I can't tell you, with a head full of these stories from our brave troops, how nauseated I am with every single person in power at any level. But this staged sanitized Big Brother bullshit is beyond the pale.
