Obama's new 2 minute Economic ad: 'Plan for Change'

Barack Obama puts out a fairly lengthy two minute ad that talks directly to voters and allows him to explain his positions in a more detailed fashion. I still disapprove of his overall bipartisan message, I would be pounding Republican ideals that has caused this mess, but it's still very effective.

Obama:  Here's what I believe we need to do. Reform our tax system to give a $1,000 tax break to the middle class instead of showering more on oil companies and corporations that outsource our jobs. End the "anything goes" culture on Wall Street with real regulation that protects your investments and pensions. Fast track a plan for energy ‘made-in-America' that will free us from our dependence on mid-east oil in 10 years and put millions of Americans to work. Crack down on lobbyists - once and for all -- so their back-room deal-making no longer drowns out the voices of the middle class and undermines our common interests as America.

Obama: In the past few weeks, Wall Street's been rocked as banks closed and markets tumbled. But for many of you - the people I've met in town halls, backyards and diners across America - our troubled economy isn't news. 600,000 Americans have lost their jobs since January. Paychecks are flat and home values are falling. It's hard to pay for gas and groceries and if you put it on a credit card they've probably raised your rates. You're paying more than ever for health insurance that covers less and less. This isn't just a string of bad luck.

The truth is that while you've been living up to your responsibilities Washington has not. That's why we need change. Real change. This is no ordinary time and it shouldn't be an ordinary election. But much of this campaign has been consumed by petty attacks and distractions that have nothing to do with you or how we get America back on track.

Here's what I believe we need to do. Crack down on lobbyists - once and for all -- so their back-room deal-making no longer drowns out the voices of the middle class and undermines our common interests as Americans.

And yes, bring a responsible end to this war in Iraq so we stop spending billions each month rebuilding their country when we should be rebuilding ours. Doing these things won't be easy. But we're Americans. We've met tough challenges before. And we can again. I'm Barack Obama. I hope you'll read my economic plan. I approved this message because bitter, partisan fights and outworn ideas of the left and the right won't solve the problems we face today. But a new spirit of unity and shared responsibility will."

Vote Obama/Biden'08.....Rebuild America

The repugs can't run away from their roll in the financial meltdown and the pundits have been saying that Obama polls stronger on the economy than McPain... but they wouldn't know for sure until the polls began to move again... especially in the key swing states.

Well... guess what?

The Polls are moving again… and this time it is in Obama’s favor!

First we saw this week Palin take a hit:

Palin favorability rating drops ten percent in three days
http://rawstory.com/news/2008/Palin_favorability_rating_drops_ten_percen...

Then we saw the key swing state of Virginia go from McCain +4 to Obama +2
http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2008/president/va/virginia_mccai...

And now Obama is up in Gallup’s National Poll:

Gallup: Obama pulls ahead of McCain for first time since RNC
http://rawstory.com/news/2008/Gallup_Obama_pulls_ahead_of_McCain_0917.html

No doubt it is going to be a close election and the Polls will swing around more before November, especially after the debates.

But one thing for sure is that the “Palin Bounce” is definitely over!

Sweet!

OT -
John,
Twitty last night in his "Big Number" segment counted McCain's "fundamentally sound" mantra 22 times, with several clips of the senator complete with dates.

Spread that puppy around.

Not bad!

Cutting taxes has been forever proved to be a crock. And Obama should hop on it.
The State of TX has bought it, too. Gave out State money for coastal damage insurance. hoooboy.

It's an ad directed to the independents, perfect.

Thank God we have a candidate who is serious about governing. I have had it with a president who lies to us. McCain has shown that with him and palin, we will only get four more years of the same....lies, lies, and more lies. What's wrong with us that this election is even close? Are we really that stupid? I certainly hope not. We need a new direction and Obama is the one giving us a chance to change directions.

The Real clear politics site has a graph over the different polls. At present it shows Mccain at +0,6% over Obama but the tide seems to have turned. The latest few nationwide polls have been a few % pro obama.
It clearly shows that the bounce for mccain from the convention is over and hes on his way down..

This is a great tact. If you're an independent looking for a reason to vote O/B, he lays out all the important issues in under two minutes, even touching upon ignoring all the negative BS. Please play this as much as possible in swing states!

Excellent!

I've listened and also listened to other economists from both the right and the left and the consensus is that because AIG was so interwoven into the economy with all of the banks and companies, that if it had been allowed to fail that it would definitely trigger a full scale global depression.

The points that Goodman and Prins were made to many of the economists and they said that the Fed let Lehman fail because of the "moral hazard" but AIG is a separate case and had to be bailed out because if it failed the results would have been catastrophic.

I'm voting for Obama for good change from the last eight years of Reslug. corruption and liars. McBush is just more of the same.

It's good, but it's too long and ponderous, with too little real emotion by Obama.

The Dems always back themselves into a corner with their logical, well-thought out, but boring talking points.

They need to appeal more to the Reptilian brain of the masses with strong, short and clever hit jobs on McCain and Palin.

What other choice is there?

We're going to have to go COLD TURKEY from the Military Industrial Complex economy.

There is now way yet to tell if this is a trend or just a bump but it is encouraging

That is not what they said. This is heist.

There was a guy here at my house, probably in his mid 30s and he was here to repair my ice maker in my frig. I asked him if it was okay to ask him who he planned to vote for. He said he didn't see any difference on the two candidates. I started asking him questions and giving him facts about Obama. Finally he said, " This country sure can't take two more years of bush." I could see I was making some inroads so I kept talking. At one point he said, "Now McCain has a woman on the ticket". I asked, what does that mean to you? He said, " It means to me that he's getting desperate". I asked, Does that make you more or less likely to vote for him. He said, "She's nothing but an air head". So I just smiled at him and asked, how is Obama looking to you now? He smiled back and said, Better than he did when I walked in your home."

You can bet Americans are glued to this election because their future depends on it. Banks failing, 2 wars, no jobs. And where is our Commander and Chief? I noticed MSM asking Obama and McCain what they plan to do, but what about Bush? Jesus, he is still the Presisdent!

At last, an adult candidate for adult voters!

The ad is better, but isn't strong enough to push undecided or soft McCain supporters over to Obama. Wonder if non-Obama supporters would even listen to the whole ad? He needs to repeat, repeat and repeat again about reducing taxes for those making under $250K. The McPailican'ts keep hitting Obama on raising taxes and according to many polls, he needs to do more to clarify his position. Show people the numbers$$$$$!!

This ad is preaching to the choir and I doubt it converts any voters, which is what we really need. Sorry, but as "nice" as it is, I don't believe it's effective.

Studies have shown that attacks work; attacks put the other person on the defensive, which is how McCain is benefitting from his lies.

If we've learned anything and want to win, using the truth, let's go at the bastards mercilessly and let them whine and complain and keep the attacks (which in our case will actually be true) in the headlines.

Of course we on this site think it's fine and about issues, but seriously, do you really believe this will grab voters? I don't.

Nice ads are not bandied about by the media, they just are seen and fade away.

Obama needs to spend his millions more wisely. Yes, attacks to work; that's why Palin is dropping.

For goodness sakes, please stick with comparisons; I'm sure it was a conscious decision to just present his ideas and not attack McCain; that's nice, but it's not what works in the real world.

Compare and attack; we have the luxury of being able to do so truthfully while scoring points.

McCain/Palin: Jan. 09-Apr. 09; then what?

@22

a heist

they would just as soon see him killed as make 'nice', but Obama forges ahead in the spirit of 'bipartisanship'.

sincere? hopefully!

foolish? wait and see.

I think the polls will continue to move in Obama's favor. McBush/palin saw a rise in the polls because she is new on the scene but now that we have seen a little of what she's all about, we see that there is not really much there. With palin we only get more of Bush....lies, resisting accountability, etc.

BEST AD THIS SEASON!

John, I know you said you would have liked to see Barack rub the failed policies of the last eight years into the face of the neocons, but honestly, this message is better for Barack because this commercial projects him in a better image. I mean yes, it is the truth, but in a way, it sort of seems as if he were to approach said avenue, he would be no better than McCain. I like the fact that he talks of bipartisanship, even if it is possible that this is something that we may not truly see.

Barack is a better man than McCain is. The last thing we need is a campaign filled with negative ads. Now im not saying he can't defend himself, that would be stupid; 2004 all over again. But he is doing a fine job of doing that and I think he will do just fine in debunking the smears.

Oops, corrections made

In private my wife and I rail against the Republican/NeoCon policies and priotities that led us to the brink of disaster.

But we applaud and support Obama's bi-partisan approach. Why?

Because most of the Republicans we know are good and misled people. Given the chance to see and understand the truth a lot of them will reject the veil of lies that their leaders depend upon.

Just as the leadership in Iran is the problem, not the good Iranian people, so to is it with Republicans.
Once cut off from the power these leaders carry many Republicans would realign Democratic.

I don't understand why the Democrats aren't hitting harder that we actually handle the economy better. We give them the economy, just like we give them national security. What are we afraid of? We are better at managing both. We are better at managing government in general. The Republicans always screw everything up when they're in charge. They don't like government and don't want to run it well. So they don't even try.

Jack Kemp was just on MSNBC blathering on about the kinds of people who got the tax breaks and why they need them because they are the only ones who reinvest in the economy. I wished Andrea Mitchell would have just said what total crap that statement is. Where is the trickle down? When is it going to happen? They've been getting their benes over the last 8 years. Their economic experiment has played out in full. And it turned out they were wrong. Their theories and policies are disastrous.

I agree this is a good ad, but there could be a little more outrage. And we shouldn't give them the economy as their issue. It is our issue. We're the only team any good at it. Ask people if their economic outlook was better or worse under Bill Clinton? Bush 1, Bush 2?

What is with some people:

If he attacks people cry that he should be sticking to the issues...

If he sticks to the issues people bitch and moan that he needs to attack...

WTF?

proposals of mccain vs. obama....mccain is lying about

I kind of disagree with you. This ad is good in the sense that it shows Obama as a thinking candidate. You never see McBush thinking about what he is saying.
Having said that they do need to ATTACK as well. Onething I have not heard them say forcefully is that McBush wants to tax health insurance benefits. That is huge to middle America. Some guy or gal making $50,00 and year and getting another $12,000 in benefits are going to get screwed. They have no idea that McBush is going to do this. Why??????

Obama/Biden, stay on your toes, stay on the attack. Attempt to close deal at the debates, then go on the attack again until election day.

It doesn't get any simpler than that.

It doesn't much matter that the Fed "saved" AIG with another huge allocation of taxpayer dollars. If you count the recent bailout of Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, the national debt is now somewhere around 13 TRILLION dollars, fifteen times more than all the national debt ever accumulated in the history of the country. Even with the "good" news of the bailout, Wall Street is tanking and we are headed into the worst financial collapse since 1929. Thank you very much, George W. Bush. Your "legacy" will be right up there with Herbert Hoover although he didn't start any genocidal wars.

pissed@23, I believe that I've been slowly but surely prodding my Dad to vote for Obama. The banks failing and the enormous debt is scaring the shit out him. Add air-head Palin he is down-right terrified. Here's to hoping.

Tyler @40...

"What is with some people:

WTF?"

Point is, if he attacks, he'll keep the story in the news and McCain will be on the offensive. Attacks have much more impact and get extra media play, compared to issue ads like this one.

Yeah, I'd love it if both campaigns stuck to the issues, but one side is not and the other will lose if it just stands there and take punches. That's why Obama's smart enough to change his mind about 527's and let them go at it. Gore played nice...Kerry played nice...see the pattern?

I don't think putting out some issue ads is necessarily bad, it's just that this one's very expensive, and do you think people will talk about this at water coolers? That's what negative ads do, and Obama's negative ads can have the virtue of being truthful too.

Obama is not going to please everyone all of the time and neither are his ads. I personally liked this one for its detail. There are other shorter ones that get right to the point in 30 seconds, but for something this important, it takes more than a sound bite.

I have done the same at my office..There are 3 people who have always voted republican, and says they can't vote for Palin...It works........And as far as the polls go they are not close. I don't see them here in Texas because it's blood red state. I guess you'd see them in the swing states...florida, ohio..etc.

It is interesting how politicians think giving a little money back here, or taking a little money there, and adding regulations is going to change anything.

First of all, the money we earn is OURS. They should work to get rid of income tax.

Secondly, regulations don't help US, they are only put in place to help big corporations crush their competition.

This country is going down hill fast, even if everything Obama says he will do happens tomorrow IT IS NO WHERE NEAR ENOUGH to save us.

One to two years from today, Obama will be president, we will STILL be in the war in Iraq and many other places, the dollar will be almost worthless and the Amero will be ready to replace it, NO ONE will have been held accountable for the last 8 years, the last of our civil liberties will have been taken away and the New World Order will be closer to complete control.

Just like how the democrap controlled congress has done absolutely NOTHING for 2 years, Obama and a democrap congress also won't do anything positive. Then Hopefully, everyone in this country will finally realize that the 2 party system is a fraud, that both parties are only interested in power and control. Then the only question will be will we stand up and take the country back from the elites or become a third world country.

I haven't seen this particular ad here in Fla yet. I have been seeing some of his other ones. We are being flooded with the ad that says McCain and Palin are mavericks. The one of McCain's that is lie after lie after lie. McCain must be spending a ton of money down here. I thought it was a done deal that our state was totally red, so why spend so much money here?

Obama has truck loads of cash. It is good to put out these kinds of ads every now and again if you can afford them. McShame can't afford them so he just puts out attack ads (that and it is the Republican way to run a campaign). Obama has enough $$$ to mix it up. Its a good thing.

That is a very good commercial, more indepth than those quickie 30 sec. spots that don't say much. I was literally blown away by this commercial. Keep it up, Obama!!!

Where is Hill and Bill????? I'm starting to get pissed at them.

absolutely excellent.

I love the ad; but I'm worried he looks more like Adliad Stevenson compaired to Eisenhower in our MTV world. Who has 2 minutes? If I didn't admire Obama, I would have chagned channels around 15 seconds in.

Great and to the point ad. Dennis, oh Dennis, where are you? See, Obama didn't have a bible on the table behind him during the ad, and he didn't say God bless America when he finished his speech. Surely with all the very real and bleak economic news we've had lately you must have a minuscule caveat emptor to take us back to the GOP bullshitland of false outrage, manufactured(lies) distractions, race baiting and fearmongering.

I do have a man-crush on Obama and believe he will win much more handily than we all expect. Perhaps not a landslide, but enough to make Nov. 4 a comfortable night.

Conservatives are vile pigs (with or without lipstick) that need to be put out to pasture old yeller style. There are good Republicans out there and I have even voted for a few. It's the conservative, hyper-Jesus, gay-hating, xenophobic, stars & bars waving non-thinkers who are the biggest threat to this country. I just don't think they can get their heart into this. Bill could be kicking some serious republican ass if he wanted to. He knows how to do it and I think he enjoys it, but for reasons of his own, he's just not up for it. It really is a shame.

If he is thinking that if Obama loses this election Hillary will be in position in four hears he is mistaken. If Obama loses and they don't put their heart into it they will be perceived a a big reason why Obama lost. It will be part of his legacy.

As much as I think pounding the repubs on their record (justifiably) is the key to victory, I think a few positive ads are a necessary counter-approach. It's a one-two punch; carrot-and-stick. They suck, whereas I've got good ideas as an alternative. Too long, though. Obama is not warm and telegenic. Bubba McBubba doesn't see a drinkin' buddy when Obama talks, and Flo "Miss Corn Stalk 1989" Pederson doesn't see a comforting, grandfatherly figure of trust. They see a funny-looking, big-tawkin' black guy with a Muslim name. Sorry to be so blunt. Shorten it down.

Read Amy Goodman interview with Nomi Prins and Michael Hudson here and see where Obama and McCain fit into the great HEIST of 2008 by BushCo et al.

I’ve listened and also listened to other economists from both the right and the left and the consensus is that because AIG was so interwoven into the economy with all of the banks and companies, that if it had been allowed to fail that it would definitely trigger a full scale global depression.

The points that Goodman and Prins were made to many of the economists and they said that the Fed let Lehman fail because of the “moral hazard” but AIG is a separate case and had to be bailed out because if it failed the results would have been catastrophic.

That is not what they said. This is heist.
----------------
Barclays had intended to buy Lehman, but once they started looking at the company, they realized there wasn't much to buy, which is why they pulled out. There was no value there; nothing to bail out. This morning, Barclays bought the only portion of the company that had any value left for millions, not billions, of dollars. A sad state of affairs. One question I have not heard, let alone answered, is: How did the financial statements of these companies withstand the scrutiny of the Big 4 accounting firms auditing them? Yes, there were write-downs of Lehmans, but the write-downs were bullsh** compared to the reality.

John, what's this whining about "bipartisan message" got to do here? This is a perfect ad. And this is the most disciplined, focused and competent candidate the Democrats had since Bobby Kennedy.

And the most liberal, too. We're gonna get much more from him of our pet issues than from Hillary. I'm truely stunned how after all this bullshit he's had to endure in the last two weeks he's still so on track.

34 mccainhater Says: John, I know you said you would have liked to see Barack rub the failed policies of the last eight years into the face of the neocons, but honestly, this message is better for Barack because this commercial projects him in a better image.

Now im not saying he can’t defend himself, that would be stupid; 2004 all over again. But he is doing a fine job of doing that and I think he will do just fine in debunking the smears.
-----------
I agree. The state of the U.S., especially in light of the financial losses this week, warrants a somber tone, not rhetoric or posturing, (ahem, McCain). People in McCain's own party are speaking out againsts the lies and smears. Obama doesn't need to play into that, because that BS is playing itself out in the media already. The McCain campaign is losing momentum and being exposed for the bubble it is, just like the housing market; just like Wall Street.

I agree that the Republicans should be largely held accountable for the damage that has been done (the specific form that accountability takes is a different discussion). But I wholeheartedly approve of the message Obama is sending because I don't think it really is bi-partisan. I think it's fundamentally non-partisan. "...worn out ideas of left and right...." I think Obama is saying that party politics is BS and the left-right political spectrum is no longer an adequate description of the realities of the American political spectrum, so stop all this bickering from the perspective of arbitrary "team" labels and just focus on what the actual problems are and how best to fix them.

In the mean time, the McCain camp has not pitched one single idea for the "change" they are talking about. They've just pitched silly barbs. So, for Obama to do this now, he kind of yanks it away from that mess and puts policy out there. At the same time, given the Obama camp isn't going to be fighting 527 groups, they can continue to feed McCain's insatiable appetite for attack ads without Obama getting his hands dirty. I'm hoping this is the beginning of the Obama camp taking the fight to 2 levels: policy and mud.

I don't mean to point out the obvious, but what capital gains. There will be so many capital losses taken from the past 3 days of trading, that it will probably take years for the individual tax payer to absorb them. Capital losses = less tax revenues folks, or rather, my friends.

If done right, as in this case, it draws in the attention of the viewer to what he is saying. Great ad! Let's have a few more of them, if needed.

Ignorance is bliss; religious superstition is used as the ultimate fear factor; and racism is a personal decision affected by a lifetime of ignorance and fear. Maybe this is a seminal moment in our history.....or maybe not.

Hillary and Bill Clinton could have checked all this, but obviously Clinton is more interested in her 2012 election campaign than with Obama's.

Imagine! This woman was on the Platform Committee of the DNC for crying out loud!

“This is a hard decision for me personally because frankly I don't like him,” she said of Obama in an interview with CNN’s Joe Johns. “I feel like he is an elitist. I feel like he has not given me reason to trust him.”

Forester is the CEO of EL Rothschild, a holding company with businesses around the world. She is married to international banker Sir Evelyn de Rothschild. Forester is a member of the DNC’s Democrats Abroad chapter and splits her time living in London and New York."

Anyone see any irony there with her lifestyle and calling Obama an "elitist"

That's ok. He's a good looking person. He exudes confidence. He is calming. You can see him thinking. He is comfortable in his own skin. And his ears are probably cute to a lot of people.

Do YOU really think that a guy whose chief financial adviser, Phil Gramm, (one of the chief architects of the current economic quagmire we are in), who is CLUELESS about the economy and who has a running mate who is eager for the "end times" and praises a minister who thinks he can exorcize demons and witches has a better chance??!!:

John McCain can have Lynn Forester de Rothschild. In fact I hope she makes a commercial for the McCain campaign discussing how she's "one of us" and not like that elitist (uppity) Barack Obama. I would even send an earmarked donation to make that happen.

Just like "I don't know how may home I have McCain" calling Obama an elitist. Up is down right is left and these assholes really think that the American people are idiots.

Hate to be a party pooper, but all this will not have as big of an effect as removing the power to set federal funds interest rates out of the hands of unelected central bankers. It is this interest rate that reflects the price of money to a borrower and thus affects demand for money which affects prices throughout the economy in a manner less pervasive but just as damaging as direct price controls. Please make Obama talk about that, then I could support him.

Me too... :)

This is weak. Obama needs to come out much stronger and much more visionary than this. Preachy. yes. Boring. yes. Inspiring. No. They need to market a plan that people can rally around and present it with an air of greatness. "Plan for Change"... that's the same old thing he has been saying for months... its what every politician throughout history has said when they ran against an incumbent. It works and it has worked and he needs to continue the mantra... but Obama needs to come up with something catchier... something like "The New Vision"... or something like that...

At the end of the day, you have to ask yourself this: in these awful times, and they will continue right thru 09 - is 18 months of experience gonna do it ? Is electing someone who's never made a major decision in his life gonna do it ? Is electing someone who takes $30,000 PER TICKET last night - more than what many Americans make in 1 year - gonna do it ? Is a running mate who hates WOMEN gonna do it ? Is someone who just bashes his opponent daily with disrespect gonna do it ? WHat we can't afford is an EXPERIMENT right now. He'll capitalize on the problems, blame it on McCain, etc - but that's not gonna do it either. Sad story of an apparently angry man who is taking it out on the American people. Let's not be duped any further by this sham. In his case, it's all above his pay grade, unless it improves his own personal cause. PLEASE DON'T EXPERIMENT - NOW or Ever.

Whaaaaaa?

Canuknotusa @ 73:

"Barack Obama puts out a fairly lengthy two minute ad..."

Lengthy?

When did 2 minutes become "lengthy" in your troubled country?

When candidates had to start paying for tv ads. TV ad space is always at a premium and gets sold in 30-second chunks. A 2 minute ad is, basically, 4 ads long and costs correspondingly more.

Either the concern trolls are getting out en masse, or the weak economy has meant that tons of frustrated advertisement execs have too much free time in between gigs.

Unless you are at the very high end of the tax base what in the hell good is another 1000 dollars tax break..what they need to do is think of something that will alleviate the crunch...tax break tax break damn that's all they think of...Tax breaks for health insurance, tax breaks for this tax breaks for that.

I AM TELLING YOU.............MOST PEOPLE DONT MAKE THAT MUCH MONEY FOR IT TO MATTER. WHY CAN'T THEY do something like...take the tax OFF THE GASOLINE. TAKE THE TAX OFF SOMETHING ELSE....that way you won't be paying so damn much out of your daily pocket that you could use for food, heating oil and other necessities.

I guess they think it sounds terriffic to say tax break. And that goes for republicans as well as the stupid crap we have as our candidate.

obama won't said republicans think we are stupid...well hell coming up with a tax break for every situation shows obama must be.

The Obama campaign is flushed with funds, they can afford it no problem.

It is however a sad reflection on the average American that 2 minutes is considered "lengthy"

A nation of impatient undereducated petulant entitled idiots trying to figure out why we are heading for the toilet.

As a rule of thumb, one should never trust a Rothschild...

They need to keep up the aggressive attacks on McGramps. Keep them fast and furious, simple and direct. He has a long history of opposing regulation. It was at the heart of the Keating 5 scandal. Keep using his own words against him. The guy has flip-flopped so much. Back in the January debates he said Americans were better off than 8 years ago. The Republicans created this mess with their push for deregulation. Imagine if they had gotten their mitts on Social Security. Attack Attack Attack!

Sorry, he's still putting me to sleep. This is nice and sensible stuff for sure, but he needs to appeal to the 5% moronic voting bloc that needs simple catch phrases. Here's one for ya, Barack: JOHN MCCAIN'S FRIENDS ARE BAILING OUT BANKS AND INSURANCE COMPANIES, BUT WHO'S BAILING *YOU* OUT?"

If he doesn't get personal and tough VERY soon, we will welcome President Palin.

Damn, Barack...GROW SOME!!!

A visionary leader that can inspire the country to be better... that's not an experiment.. that's a solid choice...
A liar that is completely out of touch with average Americans and wants to continue the same policies that every Republican since Reagan has ascribed to and driven our economy into the ground... that is just foolish.
