C&L please report this please!

Troopergate: HE WAS FIRED FOR TRYING TO STOP SEX ASSAULTS

If you haven't heard when Sarah Palin was the mayor of Wasilla, the city charged sexual assault victims for the cost of rape kits and forensic examinations.

The Violence Against Women Act.

Joe Biden's legislation required that state, local, and Indian governments provide the rape exams to victims free of charge as a condition of receiving federal funds under the Violence Against Women Act. In 2000, Alaska finally passed state legislation in order to qualify for federal funding.

McCain not only opposed Biden's legislation, but also has voted against funding it as recently as October 2007.

TROOPERGATE: NO TIME FOR SEX ASSAULTS.
Via Feministing, it turns out that one of the reasons cited by Sarah Palin for firing Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan is worse than why we previously believed she fired him: merely abusing her power to take revenge on a former brother-in-law. (See this ABC News report for the basics). She did it because Monegan was going to Washington to ask for money to combat sexual assault -- Alaska has more forcible rapes per capita than any other state in the Union -- and Palin didn't want Monegan's request to interfere with her earmarks requests going through now-indicted Senator Ted Stevens. The AP checks it out:

The last straw, the McCain campaign said, was in July, when Monegan planned to travel to Washington to seek federal money for a plan to assign troopers, judges and prosecutors who could exclusively handle sexual assault cases -- one of the state's most intractable crime problems.

In a July 7 e-mail, John Katz, the governor's special counsel, noted two problems with the trip: The governor hadn't agreed the money should be sought, and the request was "out of sequence with our other appropriations requests and could put a strain on the evolving relationship between the Governor and Sen. (Ted) Stevens."

Four days later, Monegan was fired. He said he had kept others in the administration fully apprised of his plans to go to Washington.

Between this and her refusal to subsidize rape kits for sexual assault victims, a pattern is clear.

"Poll shows support for torture among Southern evangelicals…"

That doesn't surprise me. I've heard evangelical tout nuking the arab world on the grounds that at some unspecified point in the future, all them Muslim countries are going to have their own nukes and launch them at us. Therefore, the logical goes, we have to kill millions of innocents NOW in order to—wait for it—prevent an atrocity.

Homomarriage on the other hand is evil.

Hagel questions Palin creds

Chuck Hagel of Nebraska on Wednesday became the nation's most prominent Republican officeholder to publicly question whether Sarah Palin has the experience to serve as President or V.P. In criticizing Palin, Hagel broke with other Nebraska Republicans, including Gov . David Heineman, who have praised the selection.

Omaha World-Herald:

"She doesn't have any foreign policy credentials," Hagel said in an interview. "You get a passport for the first time in your life last year? I mean, I don't know what you can say. You can't say anything."

Palin was elected governor of Alaska in 2006 and before that was the mayor of a small town.

Democrats have raised questions about Palin since Sen. John McCain picked her as his vice presidential running mate. Most national Republican officeholders have rallied to Palin's candidacy.

Palin has cited the proximity of Alaska to Russia as evidence of her international experience.

Hagel scoffed at that notion.

"I think they ought to be just honest about it and stop the nonsense about, 'I look out my window and I see Russia and so therefore I know something about Russia,'" he said. "That kind of thing is insulting to the American people."

...

Hagel offered a couple caveats on his assessment of Palin: Experience is not the only qualification for elected officials — judgment and character are indispensable.

Washington experience isn't the only kind of experience, Hagel said, and he noted that many White House occupants have been governors with no time inside the beltway.

"But I do think in a world that is so complicated, so interconnected and so combustible, you really got to have some people in charge that have some sense of the bigger scope of the world," Hagel said. "I think that's just a requirement."

So is Palin qualified to be president?

"I think it's a stretch to, in any way, to say that she's got the experience to be president of the United States," Hagel said.

To me, it’s obvious that Obama and his high tech computer whiz team are the ones who hacked into Gov. Palin’s email account. I remember reading several months ago how Obama has the best computer wizards in the country and how that helped him to be so successful in raising millions of dollars for his campaign. I pray it can be proved and the American people will know just how low he and his co-horts will go to try to destroy Sarah Palin. Who else would care about her personal emails? Although it’s doubtful anyone will be charged and sentenced in this hacking job, I think Americans with half a brain can figure this one out!

Americans with half a brain can probably also figure out Palin's zip code and birthdate. Which is apparently what she'd used as her 'secret' forgotten-password questions. (not that I condone criminal behaviour.. but come on! If you don't lock your front door, the guy who stole your stereo doesn't need to be Hudson Hawk)

Years ago I had a conversation with a fellow grad student, an Israeli, who said to me, "Candidly, we Israelis have treated the Palestinians as badly as you Americans treated the Native Americans."

Israelis are free to criticize Israel, but Americans are not.

Biden just recently came out and said he supports Israel but not all of the policies pushed for in congress by Aipac. If a politician tries to deal with the I/P conflict fairly they are buried.

Israel is the primary Anglo-American military outpost in the Middle East as well as THE principal broker of Anglo-American arms to third parties forbidden (by British or US law) to buy directly from the Anglo-American arms dealers.

That's not the only reason for America's lock-step support of Israel, but if it's not #1 it is close.

And it gets better...Rove weighs in on hacked emails...
http://www.topshelfdogfood.com/2008/09/emails-shemails.html

glen Greenwald at Salon rips through this absurd hypocrisy
http://www.salon.com/opinion/greenwald/2008/09/18/privacy/
Still, it's really a wondrous, and repugnant, sight to behold the Bush-following lynch mobs on the Right melodramatically defend the Virtues of Privacy and the Rule of Law. These, of course, are the same authoritarians who have cheered on every last expansion of the Lawless Surveillance State of the last eight years -- put their fists in the air with glee as the Federal Government seized the power to listen to innocent Americans' telephone calls; read our emails; obtain our banking, credit card, and library records; and create vast data bases of every call we make and receive and every prescription we fill and every instance of travel and other vast categories of information that remain largely unknown -- all without warrants or oversight of any kind and often in clear violation of the law.

You know, another angle on this is the very fact that a VP candidate actually had her email hacked. Seems to me that if I were a VP candidate, I should be security-conscious enough to ensure that no one could actually get into my own personal email. Again, another indication of Palin's inexperience.

good point so much for Sarah and security. she did not have blocks up that could stop a hacker.

ON THE HACKED EMAILS,

did not rove claim his office was vandalized?

Yeah...he did, didn't he? But wasn't that months before Palin was iin the spotlight?

months?!
:<[)

that was Rove's first media manipulation success!
the lies run around the world while the truth is still getting out of bed.

Seriously...I do remember him stating that, but don't remember when it was.

great point. Follow the defense companies money. Israel was caught a few years back illegal sales to China of U.S. technology

The Sino-Israeli-American Triangle

The Israeli decision, under intense American pressure, to cancel the sale of the Phalcon Airborne Early Warning System to China during the Camp David summit in July 2000 threatens to be a major foreign policy debacle for Israel.

What was once a promising Israeli endeavor to develop strategic and lucrative commercial relations with a rising great power now lies in tatters. The Chinese, still angry over the Phalcon debacle and loss of face, have demanded large-scale compensation. The Americans, the reigning superpower, demand a veto over Israeli arms sales to certain countries. Israel's very credibility as an arms exporter has been called into question.

A complex Sino-Israeli-American triangle has emerged in the decade since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Israel in 1992, one that presented Israel with a fundamental, and perhaps insolvable, dilemma as it entered uncharted waters with two stronger and often antagonistic powers. Israel began to develop close ties with China beginning at the end of the 1970s, and in recent years these ties have become particularly strong in the area of defense. Yet Israel's security is primarily dependent on its relations with the United States -- a country perceived by the Chinese as the main obstacle to achieving their national objectives. This leads to great risks for Israel, as evidenced by the forced cancellation of the Phalcon deal.

Here are specific ways to encourage a more balanced approach in U.s. foreign policy with Iran. Also important to examine closely how one fifth of U.S. foreign aid is given to Israel with no questions asked.

I wouldn't read too much into that. There are a lot of wealthy Republicans in Michigan and a lot of white-trash rednecks in the northern part of the state.
