Obama/Biden'08

"The next step of this panic could become the mother of all bank runs, i.e. a run on the trillion dollar plus of the cross border short-term interbank liabilities of the US banking and financial system as foreign banks as starting to worry about the safety of their liquid exposures to US financial institutions; such a silent cross border bank run has already started as foreign banks are worried about the solvency of US banks and are starting to reduce their exposure. And if this run accelerates - as it may now - a total meltdown of the US financial system could occur. We are thus now in a generalized panic mode and back to the risk of a systemic meltdown of the entire financial system. And US and foreign policy authorities seem to be clueless about what needs to be done next. Maybe they should today start with a coordinated 100 bps reduction in policy rates in all the major economies in the world to show that they are starting to seriously recognize and address this rapidly worsening financial crisis." Palin's role in Arctic claims questioned

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/palin_arctic;_ylt=Ans1v48IK0uycLIbQ7gaewkDW7oF

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Russian attempts to claim part of the Arctic Ocean seabed have given Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin unique foreign policy experience, the McCain-Palin campaign says, but there is no evidence she has ever been involved with or spoken publicly about them.

Asked to explain Palin's statements that Alaska's proximity to Russia bolsters her foreign policy credentials, campaign spokeswoman Meghan Stapleton said Wednesday that Alaska is involved in "north corridor issues with Russia, Canada, Iceland and the United States of America."

The campaign cited Russia's attempts to claim part of a 1,240-mile underwater mountain range that crosses the polar region as its territory. Last August, a Russian submarine dropped a titanium capsule containing the nation's flag on the sea floor, sparking a multinational race to secure rights to the Arctic seabed.

Campaign spokesman Taylor Griffin said Russia's Arctic moves "give you some interesting international experience that you might not otherwise encounter if, say, you were the governor of Delaware."

Democratic vice presidential nominee Joe Biden is a senator from Delaware and chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee.

Griffin said Palin has talked about the Russian Arctic claims with her staff, but he was unable to detail what she said or any position or action she's taken.

From an interview of Palin on CBS (she's discussing Roe vs. Wade):

"I think it should be a states issue not a federal government, mandated, mandating yes or no on such an important issues," said Palin, who opposes abortion except in cases where the pregnancy threatens the woman's life.

"I'm in that sense a federalist, where I believe that states should have more say in the laws of their lands and individual areas," she added.

Arnie pretends Palin is governor of California, and screws over people with bronchitis by vetoing an anti-port air pollution bill. NATO is considering appeasing the Taliban. Obama Wan is winning the swing states and bigoted white women. Bush hailed the Senate's vote, saying in a statement that the legislation approving the accord "will strengthen our global nuclear nonproliferation efforts, protect the environment, create jobs and assist India in meeting its growing energy needs in a responsible manner."

What does the bail-out actually do again?

i'm not kidding. i'm going to actively campaign against obama from here until election day, because of his vote today.

you DO NOT run for president of america supporting a pyramid scheme dreamed up by our enemies.

and so, i say, let's get our beautiful nation's demise accelerated to SOONER rather than LATER, so that we can begin rebuilding for our children.

to hell with obama's "plan" to pretend like we don't know what's up, to build political capital.

Colbert just did a great piece on young voters "abstaining" from voting before they're ready.

"I wanted my first time to be special. Instead I voted for Dukakis."

I think the reason Obama is voting for the bail-out is to he can say that he's for "small business" and flip off Republicans who argue against government intervention at the same time.

Dude:
Ze Frank just called. He wants his shtick back.
Also David Spade. But to me.

why is obama even running for president if he's afraid of getting shot by the money masters?

Palin Debate :::

Q: How will you fix the economy?

A: Our economy and putting it back on the side of the earth. It is for no more politics as usual. And somebody's big, fat resume maybe that shows decades and decades in that Washington establishment, where, yes, they've had opportunity to change, and who's actually done it? That's something that John McCain had pushed for, more troops? A counterinsurgency strategy?" And he said, "yes." And he also showed great appreciation for what America and our allies. We have got to be wired in a way of being so committed to the problems on Wall Street. That's the reform that we've got to be accepted and then it leads us to a position like we are getting into crisis mode here.

Here are some of the special-interest provisions that are now part of the Wall Street bailout legislation. The bill started at 3 pages, grew to 106 pages, and is now 451 pages.

* Film and Television Productions (Sec. 502)
* Wooden Arrows designed for use by children (Sec. 503)
* 6 page package of earmarks for litigants in the 1989 Exxon Valdez incident, Alaska (Sec. 504)
* Virgin Island and Puerto Rican Rum (Section 308)
* American Samoa (Sec. 309)
* Mine Rescue Teams (Sec. 310)
* Mine Safety Equipment (Sec. 311)
* Domestic Production Activities in Puerto Rico (Sec. 312)
* Indian Tribes (Sec. 314, 315)
* Railroads (Sec. 316)
* Auto Racing Tracks (317)
* District of Columbia (Sec. 322)
* Wool Research (Sec. 325)

Wool research in American Samoa while drinking PRican Rum/Cuba Libre/ -- and market bailout.

And, can always play Indians with tax-exempt arrows (arrow shafts).

Section 503, page 300 (line 20) of the EMERGENCY ECONOMIC SHAFT Act:

http://banking.senate.gov/public/_files/latestversionAYO08C32_xml.pdf

EXEMPTION FROM EXCISE TAX FOR CERTAIN WOODEN ARROWS DESIGNED FOR USE BY CHILDREN

Subparagraph (A) shall not apply to any shaft consisting of all natural wood with no laminations or artificial means of enhancing the spine of such shaft (whether sold separately or incorporated as a part of a finished or unfinished product) of a type used in the manufacture of any arrow which after its assembly (i) measures 5/16 of an inch or less in diameter and (ii) is not suitable for use with a bow described in paragraph
(1)(A). The amendments made by this section shall apply to shafts first sold after the date of enactment of this Act.""

Study the provision should you be thinking of 'enhancing the spine of (your) shaft'

http://www.house.gov/jct/x-75-08.pdf
page 121 explains the arrow provision

This proposal would exempt from the excise tax any shaft consisting of all natural wood with no laminations or artificial means to enhance the spine of the shaft used in the manufacture of an arrow that measures 5/16 of an inch or less and is unsuited for use with a bow with a peak draw weight of 30 pounds or more.

It may during the debate itself, but it won't once it hits the morning talking-head shows. They and cable will be all over these flubs if they happen--partly because of the "Tina Fey" entertainment value in them.

As has been noted here, many in the media are pissed that McCain isn't making Palin available, so they will be looking very closely at what she says and breaking it down.

I can't tolerate Matt Lauer, but my wife watches the NBC morning show each morning, and even he has been aggressive about going after his old friend John McCain when it appears the bs-meter is red-lining.

I noticed that too. And for whatever silly reason, I'm trying to give her the benefit of the doubt. Chalk it up to the sore throat and dizziness from my current cold, I guess.

But yeah, at least among the members of the founding generation, "federalist" and "state's powers" were anathema. At first, a "federalist" was someone who advocated the ratification of the Constitution, while an "anti-federalist," naturally, advocated against it -- on the grounds that it created far too strong of a federal government.

After the federalists won that round, the Federalist Party pushed for a strong federal government, centralized bank, and such. Their opponents, the Democratic-Republicans, believed in less centralized government and more reserved powers for the states.

So, my suspicion is that Sarah Palin is just tossing out words with which she is unfamiliar.

But, I suppose we do have the Federalist Society these days -- a conservative/libertarian jurisprudential organization. The Federalist Society tends to support less federal government, based on the idea that the federal Constitution objectively limits federal powers and reserves them for the states.

The chances of Palin's knowing this are probably pretty slim, but hey.

I think the guy in here with the water creature that jumps nickname is just some troll who is trying for any attention he can get by coming off with all this drivel and Limbaugh talking points.
I wouldn't offer him food.

You do that. But just to be fair, make sure you carry a placard that denounces McCain and Biden--and all the other senators who voted for this.

I'm just as against the bailout as you are, but carrying on some kind of "anti-Obama" campaign is disingenuous since he was neither the only presidential candidate who supported the bill, nor is this bill the only thing representative of his economic policies or record.

I hold him to a higher standard than I do McCain--but that's why I'm gonna vote for him. He's playing the game, which sucks, but that's what presidential politics has become--if it wasn't always. If he hadn't voted for it, you wouldn't have had to worry about voting for him anyway, as your vote would have been in the significant minority for certain. This vote was electoral insurance for both candidates.

Better to have 20% of what you want with a 90% chance of getting it done than 100% of what you want and 0% chance of getting it done. When Bush stole the election in '00 I realized that I couldn't waste my time and energy on the outside (Sorry Ralph). I'm lucky, I've had a successful career and have a pretty good life. The one thing politicians all respond to is $$$. So now I'm donating to those that I think can win and make a difference even if it is a small one.

I don't like the two party system. But we're stuck with it, once the amendment passed that made the President/Vice-President come from the same ticket any real chance for a minority candidate president went out the window.

Cynical, maybe. But I don't see a better way. Although to be honest raging against the machine did feel good I think for me atleast it ultimately proved futile.

obama IS an influential position.

once he overcomes his fear of death, he will realize the world will have his back.

i overcame my fear of death when i realized everything i was throwing out on the internet tubes could be traced by any intelligence agency in the world.

for example, if michael chertoff wanted me dead, i might very well be dead.

obama has to understand his idealism is bigger than his own personal fear of death -i don’t think obama’s there yet.

WTF?

now that i'm all done ranting over the senate scam-out vote, i'd like to say a few more kind words for my israeli brothers and sisters...

the most interesting thing happened today on the way to work. i was riding my bike down the usual path, and i came across two men i'd never seen. two very well-dressed jewish men. one was wearing the attire of a rabbi, the other was a blind man w/ a cane i assumed to be his father. i think both must have been affiliated with the campus synagogue.

i slowed my bike, as the blind man passed me, and i looked over to the younger man, dressed as a rabbi.

and i saw something in his eyes, so calm. so content, it was as if he was a man who'd just received word that the world's going to be okay.

it wasn't until i got to work that i realized we are now on the 2nd day of the jewish new year.

and so, all day, i have been thinking about how special that is. i don't know a heck of a lot about jewish culture, but i know i admire it. because, as a christian, i AM a jew.

don't ever let anyone tell you the jews killed jesus. the ROMANS killed jesus, period, end of story.

jews wrote over half the bible we christians carry, and the rest was written by jews who converted to christianity.

i might also briefly add that, if anyone out there who is not a jew is ever invited to a jewish wedding, don't pass it up, it will be the best party you ever attend.

so, it is my understanding that at the beginning of jewish new year, jews repent their sins, etc.

i say let the rest of us REALLY spend that time appreciating jews. not just the religious aspect, the scientific contributions, the artistic contributions, everything. this would be no world without jews, and i truly mean that.

regular c&l readers will know about my belief that pain and suffering lead to humor -and jews are the best, because they've been kicked around so much by so many different jack@$$es.

who are are best comics? jon stewart, larry david, mel brooks, woody allen...

tonight, i tip my cap to soupy sales.

i challenge any of you out there to read his wikipedia entry i just linked and not die laughing.

Maybe they should today start with a coordinated 100 bps reduction in policy rates in all the major economies in the world to show that they are starting to seriously recognize and address this rapidly worsening financial crisis." If you want to know what this bailout is REALLY about read this http://www.lewrockwell.com/orig9/butler-b2.html.

I can't believe how you all STILL think Obama isn't bought and paid for. He could have stood up to this and pretended he was against it (because it would still pass) and make all of you think he was looking out for you.

But just like Bush, Obama couldn't give a fuck about the American people. He is a puppet. When are you all going to stop giving him excuses and wake up.

And before you ask, 'but who do I vote for', how about NO ONE. Or if you think your vote really matters, you can vote against ANY incumbent.

Your link is not valid. Obama politically didn't have a choice. If he would have voted against it he would have been accused of not caring about people being able to get loans to buy a home or a car and against small businesses. If you think otherwise you're nuts and I'll leave it there so I don't say anything worse about you.

I was very proud of Mrs. Palin.

Just last night I saw a clip of her where she pronounced Ahmadinejad correctly.

Maybe she's ready to be VP after all.

Ya think?

On Hugh Hewitt, I caught the response of Jerry Kilgore, who lost to Tim Kaine, on whether Virginia will turn Blue for the election. He responded that it would "stay gray". Is the south rising again?

Karen @ 42:
So, my suspicion is that Sarah Palin is just tossing out words with which she is unfamiliar.

But, I suppose we do have the Federalist Society these days -- a conservative/libertarian jurisprudential organization. The Federalist Society tends to support less federal government, based on the idea that the federal Constitution objectively limits federal powers and reserves them for the states.

The chances of Palin's knowing this are probably pretty slim, but hey.

That was my suspicion, also, that she's heard the word but is not exactly clear on the meaning and got it mixed up with its opposite.

Good point about the Federalist Society. I'll admit I didn't think about an alternate explanation.

Even if the only argument one could make for Obama is that he sucks less than McCain, installing McCain/Palin is tantamount to mass suicide.

Obama was very low on my list of choices in the primaries. And frankly, the Democrats don't deserve our votes. But in this insidious electoral system, it's either going to be McCain or Obama. And I'm just not buying that the two are the same.

It would seem to me that, if the choice is between the end of America and buying a little time to prevent the end of America, the choice is obvious. I'll vote for a little time, and then focus my political energies on what I think are worthwhile projects. If McCain wins (or otherwise ascends to the presidency), I'm not sure there will be any real time left. Only, perhaps, the time to get the hell out of here.

If you are a member of the LGBT community, Obama/Biden and McCain/Palin are not the same.

If you believe that women should have reproductive freedom, Obama/Biden and McCain/Palin are not the same.

If you believe in unenumerated rights of the people, Obama/Biden and McCain/Palin are not the same.

If you believe that the president and vice president should be of above average intelligence, and possess the critical thinking skills needed to solve problems, Obama/Biden and McCain/Palin are not the same.

I could go on.

Things will not magically get better under an Obama Administration. They might not get all that much better at all. But the possibility of a McCain/Palin Administration is truly terrifying.

if obama intends to make faustian bargains, like the loser bill clinton, he needs to first consult with the constituents who got him where he is today.

"Sure this economic situation is tough, just like raisin' five kids is tough, donchaknow"

She'll be given credit for stringing together a few coherent thoughts and it Biden calls "bullshit" on it she'll whip out the "How dare you attack women -- you sexist pig". Or some equally vapid comment.

Joe will be on his heels the whole time and even though Quaylin doesn't say a damn thing it will be perceived as a win for her and by extension the CryptKeeper.

Senate passed it.

But will 12 in the House change their vote?

Are (1) the increase of FDIC insurance from $100,000 to $250,000 and (2) the extension of some tax breaks to businesses big enough "sweeteners" to get 12 of the Republicans to change their minds from "no bailouts - it's a free market" to "sure it's OK with us"?

Those "sweeteners" aren't likely to move a single Democratic vote.

If there is the same outpouring of opposition from the general population that sank the first attempt, this bill will likely fail as well.

I don't how those "sweeteners" are going to satisfy the people - populists from both the left and the right - who brought down the first bill. Congressional switchboard is gonna light up again.

The president or the Senate can SUGGEST a spending bill (take for example the budget proposal that every president sends to congress) and must both ratify it for it to take effect. But the House still has to formally start the process. This action isn't unprecedented, it is just unusual.

Seriously, we do need to get more people reading the Constitution and knowing how government functions. The crooks and liars work best when dealing with ignorant masses.

And now I'm pumpkin material. ByeBye

Watching the senate prepare to vote on the bailout bill I was stuck by how the wide angle shots remind me of old paintings and drawings of similar scenes. All of the white haired guys make it seem that the place is still filled with people strutting around in powdered wigs. Why is that, do you think?

Which America are you willing to die for? The Obama supporters or the Palindrones? The Red States or the Blue States?

What is America anymore anyway? We have lost our Constitution and our privacy and our right to a fair trial if we are deamed an enemy combatant.

Perhaps Wall Street? That would please them no end.

the bit we didnt get to see here

“This is a rudderless ship!” he yelled. “How many Jews are even in Congress? Wall Street’s open. I’ll guarantee you they’ve got more Jews on Wall Street. … The Daily Show’s on. I’ll guarantee you we’ve got more Jews at the Daily Show than Congress. So get back to saving the economy — and if you have to do it without Feingold and Lieberman, so be it.”

Oh, and the $650B was a short term low-interest loan. The actual loans are for 30 days at ~3% interest. Actual cost to the taxpayers is roughly $1.6B. A fair hunk of change but well within the limits of what the Fed can do. Despite what some say the Fed may not be approved of by the Constitution but it is the defacto means of controlling the money supply. The Congress ceded that authority to it long ago. I'm trying to remember -- there was a case in the Supreme Court that I think sided with the government. Damn, my 19th century law knowledge ain't what it used to be. Oh Wikipedia!

McCulloch v. Maryland, 17 U.S. 316 (1819), was a landmark decision by the Supreme Court of the United States.

The state of Maryland had attempted to impede operation of a branch of the Second Bank of the United States by imposing a tax on all notes of banks not chartered in Maryland. Though the law, by its language, was generally applicable, the U.S. Bank was the only out-of-state bank then existing in Maryland, and the law is generally recognized as specifically targeting the U.S. Bank. The Court invoked the necessary-and-proper clause in the Constitution, which allowed the Federal government to pass laws not expressly provided for in the Constitution's list of express powers as long as those laws are in useful furtherance of the express powers.

This fundamental case established the following two principles:

that the Constitution grants to Congress implied powers for implementing the Constitution's express powers, in order to create a functional national government, and
that state action may not impede valid constitutional exercises of power by the Federal government.
The opinion was written by Chief Justice John Marshall, a man whose many judicial opinions have shaped modern constitutional law.

Of course this action still chafes at the hides of many who see it as giving power to the government that wasn't spelled out in the Constitution but this is and has been the law of the land for 189 years. Deal with it.

If you are unconditionally willing to die for things you believe in, you could be a fascist, but probably not.

I'll admit I didn't think about an alternate explanation.

honestly, that is what i thought she meant...cuz no way could she have meant that she is a federalist in classic terms

and ya...she is doing what kids do when they learn a new word or concept...using it at every chance...even if it doesnt fit

Good point about the "idealistic" president. People will call Kennedy idealistic except that he defeated Nixon in the debates partly because he knew all about the coming Cuba invasion having been tipped off by Allen Dulles. He used this information against Nixon knowing Nixon couldn't say anything about it. That's just being a politician. And that's what Obama is: a POLITICIAN.
BTW, I am a Kennedy admirer, but let's be real here.

Also, the Teddy Roosevelt mr. frog was posting about: Was this the same Roosevelt who was probably the first "expansionist" president who faught a war against Spain in Cuba and the Phillipines for the benefit of corporate America? Just thought I'd ask.

Wonder what that says for the GOP and their future? Continue down this path and become a party of complete fanatics and sheep, frightening away whatever thinking people they have left in their ranks. rather startling and outrageous manipulation of the markets by a chain of people and orgs.

the smoking gun so to speak.

With a traditional short sale, traders borrow shares and sell them in the hope that prices will drop. A naked short works much the same way - except the shares aren't actually borrowed. They're sold but not delivered.

By the middle of the summer, these unresolved "stock IOUs" - as Byrne calls them - were pilling up in four Wall Street giants already struggling to stay afloat: investment banks Lehman Brothers and Merrill Lynch and mortgage finance companies Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. On July 12, the Securities and Exchange Commission issued an emergency order banning naked shorts in a host of major stocks, and all four of those names were on the list.

this is clear evidence of criminal fraud and conspiracy to manipulate the stock markets for inner gain, time for the DoJ and the SEC to start investigating.

US Great Place For The Oil Business - IPS
- http://www.commondreams.org/headline/2008/10/01-5
Why do U.S. oil companies -- some of the most profitable corporations on the planet -- receive 20 to 40 billion dollars a year in subsidies from the U.S. government? And, in a time of skyrocketing oil prices and profits, why did the George W. Bush administration in 2005 authorise an additional 32.9 billion dollars in new subsidies over a five-year period?
"Those are very good questions," said Doug Koplow of Earth Track, Inc., an independent energy information research organisation in Boston, Massachusetts. "I don't have a good answer other than to say we've been subsidising American oil companies since 1918," Koplow told IPS. Koplow's 2007 report to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development puts the annual U.S. subsidy at an average of 39 billion dollars a year, when the costs of guarding oil lanes in the Persian/Arab Gulf, and the Alaska Pipeline are included.
This does not include any costs from the Iraq war.

CNN: Sarah Palin (R-Airhead) Has Never Seen Russia From Alaska - http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/10/01/cnn-sarah-palin-has-never_n_130...
Just when you thought the whole "I can see Russia from Alaska" thing couldn't get any funnier...CNN's Gary Tuchman delivers the goods: it turns out that Sarah Palin has never seen Russia from Alaska. Tuchman went up to the part of Alaska from which you can actually see Russia, a remote island called Little Diomede located just 2.4 miles from it's Russian twin, Big Diomede.
It turns out Gary Tuchman's trip to Little Diomede sets him apart from Sarah Palin -- because she's never actually been there, nor has she set eyes on its neighbor in Russia.
