I noticed that too. And for whatever silly reason, I'm trying to give her the benefit of the doubt. Chalk it up to the sore throat and dizziness from my current cold, I guess.

But yeah, at least among the members of the founding generation, "federalist" and "state's powers" were anathema. At first, a "federalist" was someone who advocated the ratification of the Constitution, while an "anti-federalist," naturally, advocated against it -- on the grounds that it created far too strong of a federal government.

After the federalists won that round, the Federalist Party pushed for a strong federal government, centralized bank, and such. Their opponents, the Democratic-Republicans, believed in less centralized government and more reserved powers for the states.

So, my suspicion is that Sarah Palin is just tossing out words with which she is unfamiliar.

But, I suppose we do have the Federalist Society these days -- a conservative/libertarian jurisprudential organization. The Federalist Society tends to support less federal government, based on the idea that the federal Constitution objectively limits federal powers and reserves them for the states.

The chances of Palin's knowing this are probably pretty slim, but hey.

You do that. But just to be fair, make sure you carry a placard that denounces McCain and Biden--and all the other senators who voted for this.

I'm just as against the bailout as you are, but carrying on some kind of "anti-Obama" campaign is disingenuous since he was neither the only presidential candidate who supported the bill, nor is this bill the only thing representative of his economic policies or record.

I hold him to a higher standard than I do McCain--but that's why I'm gonna vote for him. He's playing the game, which sucks, but that's what presidential politics has become--if it wasn't always. If he hadn't voted for it, you wouldn't have had to worry about voting for him anyway, as your vote would have been in the significant minority for certain. This vote was electoral insurance for both candidates.

If he would have voted against it he would have been accused of not caring about people being able to get loans to buy a home or a car and against small businesses. Even if the only argument one could make for Obama is that he sucks less than McCain, installing McCain/Palin is tantamount to mass suicide.

Obama was very low on my list of choices in the primaries. And frankly, the Democrats don't deserve our votes. But in this insidious electoral system, it's either going to be McCain or Obama. And I'm just not buying that the two are the same.

It would seem to me that, if the choice is between the end of America and buying a little time to prevent the end of America, the choice is obvious. I'll vote for a little time, and then focus my political energies on what I think are worthwhile projects. If McCain wins (or otherwise ascends to the presidency), I'm not sure there will be any real time left. Only, perhaps, the time to get the hell out of here.

If you are a member of the LGBT community, Obama/Biden and McCain/Palin are not the same.

If you believe that women should have reproductive freedom, Obama/Biden and McCain/Palin are not the same.

If you believe in unenumerated rights of the people, Obama/Biden and McCain/Palin are not the same.

The president or the Senate can SUGGEST a spending bill (take for example the budget proposal that every president sends to congress) and must both ratify it for it to take effect. But the House still has to formally start the process. This action isn't unprecedented, it is just unusual.

Seriously, we do need to get more people reading the Constitution and knowing how government functions. The crooks and liars work best when dealing with ignorant masses.

Oh, and the $650B was a short term low-interest loan. The actual loans are for 30 days at ~3% interest. Actual cost to the taxpayers is roughly $1.6B. A fair hunk of change but well within the limits of what the Fed can do. Despite what some say the Fed may not be approved of by the Constitution but it is the defacto means of controlling the money supply. The Congress ceded that authority to it long ago. I'm trying to remember -- there was a case in the Supreme Court that I think sided with the government. Damn, my 19th century law knowledge ain't what it used to be. Oh Wikipedia!

McCulloch v. Maryland, 17 U.S. 316 (1819), was a landmark decision by the Supreme Court of the United States.

The state of Maryland had attempted to impede operation of a branch of the Second Bank of the United States by imposing a tax on all notes of banks not chartered in Maryland. Though the law, by its language, was generally applicable, the U.S. Bank was the only out-of-state bank then existing in Maryland, and the law is generally recognized as specifically targeting the U.S. Bank. The Court invoked the necessary-and-proper clause in the Constitution, which allowed the Federal government to pass laws not expressly provided for in the Constitution's list of express powers as long as those laws are in useful furtherance of the express powers.

This fundamental case established the following two principles:

that the Constitution grants to Congress implied powers for implementing the Constitution's express powers, in order to create a functional national government, and
that state action may not impede valid constitutional exercises of power by the Federal government.
The opinion was written by Chief Justice John Marshall, a man whose many judicial opinions have shaped modern constitutional law.

Of course this action still chafes at the hides of many who see it as giving power to the government that wasn't spelled out in the Constitution but this is and has been the law of the land for 189 years. Deal with it.

going back as little as 1970 and certain backward states in the US still had Crow laws on their books !!!!!!!!!!!!!
and still theres some southern counties in the US where mixed race marriages are not a healthy option, people either get jailed on trumped up charges or leave town.
