Six missing US climbers were feared dead in the northwestern state of Washington after searchers located their climbing gear on Mount Rainier, a National Park official said Saturday.
Searchers found the equipment "and detected signals from avalanche beacons at the top of the Carbon Glacier at 9,500 feet [2,896 meters] in elevation," said Patti Wold at the Mount Ranier National Park.
"All indications point toward a fall of 3,300 feet [1,006 meters] from near the party’s last known location" at a site known as Liberty Ridge, Wold said in a statement.
