The wingosphere is flipping out over an explosive Elliot Abrams piece in which he lambastes Newt Gingrich for his vituperative assaults on Ronald Reagan back in the '80s. Abrams writes that, while the Reagan administration was battling Congressional Democrats over foreign policy, "Gingrich chose to attack . . . Reagan."

The best examples come from a famous floor statement Gingrich made on March 21, 1986. This was right in the middle of the fight over funding for the Nicaraguan contras; the money had been cut off by Congress in 1985, though Reagan got $100 million for this cause in 1986. Here is Gingrich: “Measured against the scale and momentum of the Soviet empire’s challenge, the Reagan administration has failed, is failing, and without a dramatic change in strategy will continue to fail. . . . President Reagan is clearly failing.” Why? This was due partly to “his administration’s weak policies, which are inadequate and will ultimately fail”; partly to CIA, State, and Defense, which “have no strategies to defeat the empire.” But of course “the burden of this failure frankly must be placed first on President Reagan.” Our efforts against the Communists in the Third World were “pathetically incompetent,” so those anti-Communist members of Congress who questioned the $100 million Reagan sought for the Nicaraguan “contra” rebels “are fundamentally right.”

And the best part:

Such was Gingrich’s faith in President Reagan that in 1985, he called Reagan’s meeting with Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev “the most dangerous summit for the West since Adolf Hitler met with Neville Chamberlain in 1938 in Munich.”

Classic.

This is especially rich since Newt has been invoking St. Ronald of California more than any other GOP candidate.

Please, please, please let the Teabircher racist fascist psycho nut jobs nominate Newt.

He can take the entire Teabircher crowd of brownshirt imbeciles down with him.

Completely clearing the air of the 2010 GOP Teabircher brain fart America suffered.

If I were a psychopath, I would join the republican party, and get in on the gravy train taking the Teabircher morons to the cleaners.

Well Neville Chamberlain was a Conservative.

Blasphemy!

Not St. Ronnie?

How dare he!

Millions of conservatives from around the world are appalled, appalled I tell you, and sick, sick- that someone would insult the religious icon and symbol of crony capitalism and corporate fascism, and above all else - freedom; St. Ronnie of Raygun.

Because a true conservative knows, the three are intertwined.

If going through wives faster than Tiffany's credit lines or ethics violations doesn't get Republicans to drop Newt, blasphemy against the Patron Saint of Trickle Down just might do it.

Rejoice if you will in this squabble and giggle at fresh evidence of Newt's hypocrisy (as if any more is needed), but ask yourself why this story is being featured on the Drudge Report, the sleaziest and most widely read of the puppet GOP web-rags.

Why is it aimed squarely at the mass of Teapublicans, Newt's base, whose love for Reagan is unquestioned?

Could it be that the Republican Establishment (in other words, Limbaugh/Ailes/Rove/the WSJ editorial board/the Koch twins) - who know neither Romney or Newt stands much of a chance against Obama - has decided to prepare the ground for the late entry into the race of Mitch Daniels or Chris Christie, both of whom have credibility among conservatives as fiscal Reaganites?

You might,(shudder), have something there..............instead of two stinking piles of excrement to choose from,(excluding Gift From God santorum), here's two shiny "new" turds...........take your pick.

our first virtual president, one would like to think the president's before him were still nominally in charge, but they probably weren't. i know it's bash newt time, but something should be said about reagan's criminality. president's before ronnie at least used the cia to do the dirty work, when congress passed the boland amendment reagan hired outside thugs to skirt and subvert the law, that newt gingrinch thinks reagan wasn't hard core enough is scary as hell. i don't believe this guy will get the nomination, but just the fact that a man who was tossed out of office for ethics gets a hearing from the pukes shows how low the party of lincoln has sunk.

Gingrich Called Reagan Weak, Pathetically Incompetent and Compared Him to Neville Chamberlain

Bill Lumbergh's picture

Gingrich manages to shoot himself in the foot by both criticizing Saint Ronnie, and being factually wrong.
If questioned on his old remarks, I wonder what his defense would be? Would he argue that it was Afghanistan and the hard work of Bush 1 that brought down the evil empire?
What an astounding pompous ass he is.
