You needed to escape FROM the bubble, Governor? Clearly, the bubble that Sanford escaped TO is the one that got him in trouble. An average cheating spouse can use a cell phone and email account to cover his/her affair, anywhere in the world. Sanford did more than travel and cheat. He consciously disappeared. That is a form of hate toward anyone who cared about him or depended upon him, at work or at home.

There is something psychotically narcissistic about a need to disappear from the world in which you have real-life obligations.

Virginia Abortion Restriction Is Upheld
U.S. Appeals Court Votes 6-5 to Back 'Partial Birth' Ban

By Josh White
Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, June 25, 2009

A sharply divided federal appeals court ruled constitutional yesterday a Virginia law banning "partial birth" abortion that was overturned four years ago, bringing the state in line with a federal ban on the controversial procedure.

A three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit overturned the Virginia law in 2005 by a 2 to 1 vote, finding that it did not allow for exceptions to safeguard a woman's health. The Supreme Court ordered the appeals judges to revisit the issue when it upheld the Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act two years ago, a law passed by Congress in 2003 that is similar to Virginia's ban.

Although the Virginia law permits women to choose various abortion procedures, it specifically makes it a crime for doctors to perform a rare midterm abortion that involves partially delivering the fetus before crushing its skull to ease removal.

This is actually one of Ward Sanford's touching family commercials so he could get elected. Scum Bag!

Script of "Boys" (TV) (On screen: Mark Sanford: Republican for Governor) MARK SANFORD: Jenny and I try our best to teach our four little boys Christian values, character and honesty. You'd like to think that those values apply to government, too. And that starts with keeping your word. When I ran for Congress, I said I'd support term limits, never take a dime from special interests and not waste the taxpayers' money. I kept those promises. South Carolina needs a return to real, honest leadership in the governor's office. (On screen: Mark Sanford: A leader, not a politician; Paid for by Sanford for Governor)

In my opinion, ditching the world for six days when you're governor is only something you do when you're playing long odds. And even aside from that -- immediate demonizing is exactly what a lot of conservatives do.

Just a note about those who choose to have affairs…

I don’t care.

Really, it’s none of my business. American’s are so preoccupied with sex: Gay-sex, hetero-sex, extra-marital-sex, celebrity-tabloid-sex, politician-sex. People have sex – good for them.

Sanford isn’t a bad Governor because he has had an ongoing affair for over a year. That makes him a bad husband. He’s not really a bad Governor just because he left his office for a few days (it’s not like he was standing post and went AWOL in the face of an enemy attack). His absence is irresponsible, but understandable.

Sanford is a hypocrite because he told the people of SC to vote for him because he was the arbiter of morality. Sanford told voters that he and he alone in the race for Governor, knew “family values” and how to have “correct sex”. “Vote for me, my penis is spiritual…” Well, we now know that was all a charade. But this also does not make Sanford a bad Governor, just a bad hypocrite.

I tried to look up some info on Sanford to determine if he was a bad Governor. It appears his political career was financed by his wife – not a great thank-you there, Mark. But aside from his failed grand-standing on the stimulus money for SC (“stupid is as stupid does”), I come up with a big zero. Nada.

After getting his MBA, Sanford worked at a bank. That was his only job prior to politics. I don’t know what Mark will do after his term in SC is over, but his political career, and his marriage, are over.

I will not cry for him because of Argentina. The truth is, I don’t care.

boocilla69's picture

I have no use for Sanford -- or his politics -- but these comments are over the top and suggest hysteria and unfamiliarity with human nature.

ron's picture

that had to go to another continent to get laid.

RobertD's picture

But that's not the point, is it?

We, of course, don't know what happened. Maybe Sanford went to Argentina to end it. Or maybe he went there to beg his mistress to take him back so he could be with "the love of his life," and she refused. Or maybe he just got caught. Are there Democrats doing the same thing. You can count on it.

I'm not going to pass judgment on him for having an affair. What annoys me is the "I have the right to pass judgment on others because America is the land of family values" perspective--which then sees that individual caught up in his (and usually it is *his*) own infidelity.

People are human. They make mistakes. That doesn't mean their wives (or husbands, or whatever) are obligated to forgive them. But it also should serve to remind us that we're fallible. Using something like this to score political points can often come back to bite you in the ass.

Keep your eyes on the prize. Doing the work of the people is why you got elected--not to be somebody's moral superior. Time and again, those who railed against Clinton's infidelity have had this return home to them. Get the hell out of our bedrooms and concentrate on your job.

He potentially put how many South Carolinians lives in jeopardy. He was grossly irresponsible.

Shoeless's picture

Hi Joanne. On first reading your post, I thought saying that Sanford put the people of his state at risk might be stretching it just a bit. But then I got to thinking. Russia invaded Georgia last year, and South Carolina is just a stone's throw away from Georgia...

rra1911A1's picture

"But it also should serve to remind us that we're fallible."

No, it also should serve to remind us that Sanford proved he's a fucking jerk.

FreeAmerica's picture

When a man runs for office and a big part of his platform is that he is morally superior then we must also include liar, hypocrit and Bad judgement into his life. He was the one who ran his mouth so let him be judged on his fallabilty.

and realize that having an affair doesn't mean bupkis about your ability to govern. Bush was faithful and Clinton fooled around. JFK got almost as much tail as Frank Sinatra. Thomas jefferson fooled around with his slaves. I would take any of them over the mediocre politicians that are "faithful". The only reason I think this is newsworthy, well two reasons one is for the hypocrisy value since Sanford was a big Clinton BJ basher and two because its so darned funny.

ron's picture

You summed it up well.

spinn's picture

Exactly. I'm all for calling him out for being a hypocrite. But these people saying he's a scumbag for having an affair, it seems over the top.

Another thing I'm trying to figure out is that apparently, his wife knew about this 5 months ago and requested 2 weeks ago that he leave the house. If this is true, what I don't understand is that he went anyway to meet Maria last week, and today, he said that he was "sorry" to his wife and kids.

How can he be "sorry" so soon, if his wife already knew about it, and he did it again? It's because he got caught.

We just kicked Spain's ass in soccer!

Grats!
Great game!

I hoped some people in the US might actually watch it too. And that the news was mentioned in some places, like this site, perhaps.

But Americans seems sadly to be brainwashed not to appreciate the beauty and exitement of top level soccer. My theory is that it has everything to do with the commercial-unfriendly format of 2 x 45 minute period.

I have a wish that you might come around some day. The American soccer team is actually pretty good. As thoroughly demonstrated by last nights performance.

Andy K's picture

In '90 (the first year I was old enough to watch the World Cup at bars), I watched the games with African guys. Pretty much the same in '94. I was the only native-born American in the bar watching the games. But every year since, I've watched games- whether World Cup, Champions League or EPL- with a growing number of Americans.

I think John Amato put up a football/open thread during the European Championships last year. I know he follows the game, because we write each other about it all of the time. Maybe he'll put up a thread for it on Sunday if we ask nicely.

BTW, who are your teams- league and national? I support the US, of course, and Manchester United since the days that Eric Cantona played at Old Trafford.

Celsius's picture

Good to hear that soccer is becoming more popular in the US.

Yes, I remember John putting up the soccer thread during the EC, so I almost expected to see something about yesterdays great match here. Beating Spain, which is ranked number 1 (!) in the world in a serious cup semi final is sensational! Also, it was a great game with lots of exitement. A miracle that Spain never scored, but it takes nothing away from the effort and skill of the American team. Always fun when the underdog wins, although the USA team is getting better and better. I wish more American people would support it.

Also cool to hear that you watch the English Premier League. It's the best league in the world right now, and it's where you find the best football, imo. Sometimes the mix og sheer speed, quality of players and coaches and the physical and direct style with highly developed tactics there outmatches even national tournaments and parts of Champions League.

I am Norwegian, so on international basis, that's of course my team, but somehow, watching other teams can be more enjoyable. :P (Norway had a great period in the 90s, but it has been downhill since.) But I will mention this: Norway is the only nation never beaten by Brazil in soccer. Yay.

The club team in my heart is Liverpool, so in that manner, we are sworn enemies, Andy. :P

I support [...] Manchester United

That's ok. To err is human. :)

But I must admit that I have good feelings for other English teams as well: The London clubs Tottenham and Fulham (the latter has a bit of an American connection, it seems.) are teams I like and especially enjoy watching, but also frankly anyone who plays good soccer, has interesting players etc. I am also watching some MLS when they send matches here, btw. Young speedy athletic players coupled with some South-American oldtimers and talents, an attacking style of play and some lack of defensive routine makes it a fun league to watch.

I know I'm preaching to the choir when it comes to you, Andy, but for others; here is my selling pitch why I enjoy the game so much:

The simplicity of the physics of soccer (the human body minus arms plus a round ball), the elegance of the great technicians and the geometrical/spatial play on the pitch coupled with the endless tactical possibilities and the psychological aspect of the team game makes it such a great sport. It's simple yet deep. Also, I think one of the things that makes it so great is that there is room for all physical builds. You can be small and agile or big and strong, tall or short or any combination and excell at the game, using that which nature gave you. It's "rock, paper and scissors" in a way, and good teams always have complementary traits in their squad. And in the end, it's all about what goes on inside the players' heads.

I will also make an argument that the low number of goals in soccer makes the sport interesting. Compared to some other team sports where the amount og goals are high and the laws of statistics mean that the best team always win, the low number of goals gives the game a random factor. (I think this is worth the occational boring 0-0 game.) Anyone can beat anyone, given the right circumstances. "The ball is round", as people way. Luck is a factor, although skill, determination and positive thinking are the major factors of success.

(I had to go though my comment and replace all the times I had written "football" with "soccer" to be polite to you Americans. D4mn j00! :)

Yet in another AP article, she says, "I believe Mark has earned a chance to resurrect our marriage." How did he 'earn' that, by flying to Argentina to bang his mistress?

Lady has got issues.

Rich, Republican heiress kicks out rich, Republican presidential-wanna-be instead of covering it up for the financial advantage of them both.

They're both lucky one of them didn't end up dead. Sounds like it could easily have gone that way. Money corrupts; so does power.

Sounds just like an episode of "Dancing with the Stars," dunnit?

dosido's picture

I thought part of her statement was she kicked him out as a trial separation so that he could get his act together. I think she said something along the lines of they, ahem, he was supposed to be working on his part of the committment or words to that effect? She kept it quiet until he took off like a teen with puppy love.

Watching all of these christiofascist republican hypocrites, is like watching an episode of the worlds dumbest criminals.

Why didn't this moron just wear her underpanties on his head at the news conference, and clench her bra between his teeh?

It may have been more discrete than his actions.

Rush Limbaugh is what a smart person thinks a stupid bigot sounds like.

Wasn't it King George who gave up his turn at the throne in the early 1900's so he could be with the woman he loved? It does happen.

Maybe Sanford really loves this woman more than Mrs. Skilsaw. Maybe she gets him. If so--and assuming he's honest about it--I wish them both well.

I don't care what the man does, as long as he doesn't shove his version of morality down everyone else's throat. His personal life is between his wife and him--and his mistress, of course.

I think you're thinking of Prince Edward and Mrs. Simpson.

He was King Edward VIII by then.

If this guy was a normal work a day sort, he would have been fired by now. Why does this man still have a job? This is the height of irresponsibility. Oh that's right, he had a good cry and a "forgive me I have sinned" moment so it's all good now, right?

Because it's late, and I'm bored, etc., I'm going to try a little experiment I think. Going to see if President Obama's genealogical info is in OneWorldTree yet, and call up the list of famous relatives if it is.

You see I'm mainly curious as to whether that list will turn up Richard Nixon, since that would be irony of ironys after today's post about Dick and abortion. (For those who didn't see my reponse in that thread, I am a distant, distant cousin of Dick, and I am mixed-race. Needless to say I was not amused)

From The State - a daily morning newspaper published in Columbia, South Carolina, owned by The McClatchy Company - the largest newspaper in the South Carolina.

Hunch leads to airport and tired, troubled Sanford

It was about 6:15 a.m. Wednesday as I stood in the waiting area at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, squinting my eyes to see whether Gov. Mark Sanford was part of a crowd exiting the plane from Buenos Aires, Argentina.

“Is he there? Is he there?” I kept asking myself as I craned my neck, flipped on my digital recorder and booted up my digital camera.

“And why is there no other media here?” I wondered. “Could we be the only ones onto this story?”

It’s how you think when you’re playing a hunch, following an anonymous tip that Sanford would be on the plane and anonymous, unverifiable e-mails about an alleged affair between Sanford and woman from Argentina.

Then, my jaw dropped when Sanford appeared. My camera flashed, almost as a reflex.

“Governor,” I called. “Hey. It’s Gina with The State paper. Everybody’s been worried about where you’ve been. ... Have you been on the Appalachian Trail?”
...

E-mails detail intimate affair

E-mails obtained by The State newspaper in December detailed an affair between Gov. Mark Sanford and Maria, a woman in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

However, attempts to verify the e-mails — from an anonymous source — were fruitless, until Wednesday. Then, acting on another anonymous tip that Sanford would be on a plane returning from Argentina, the paper sent a reporter to Atlanta.

When Sanford got off a plane from Buenos Aires, he stopped an interview with The State when asked if he had been with anyone in Argentina.

The State then contacted Sanford’s office and a former aide, explicitly saying it had e-mails between the governor’s personal e-mail address and an Argentine woman and thought them to be genuine.

Sanford’s office subsequently scheduled a news conference, at which time the governor confessed to an affair.

It's obvious the guy screwed up and screwed up big. Republicans and Democrats do it. You do it and I do it. He's paying for it and he apologized. All of this stone-throwing is really just a yawn festival.

MountainMan23's picture

You're certainly free to yawn .. even nod off if it pleases you.

I for one am quite pleased to see intrepid journalists stick it to the high and mighty self righteous hypocrites who do so much to damage the lives of the people whom they govern, people they could instead benefit by doing their f'ing jobs responsibly.

Yawn if you like .. and even nod off ..

But I'm truly grateful we still have intrepid journalists like Gina Smith.

someone for the same screw up.

Vitter and Sanford were throwing some stones of their own. lots of 'em.

ecotopian's picture

I really don't care that he went and dipped his wick with someone other than his wife. I do care that he left without telling anyone where he was. That's what is the real issue here. He is a governor. He should understand he has responsibilities that he can't just walk away from. He needs to resign for that reason, not his infidelity.

dosido's picture

totally irresponsible. if someone tipped off a reporter on the emails and where he'd be, that someone had the same opportunity to tip off someone who might want to do him more harm. really estupido to go AWOL.

How many public officials have gone AWOL during their term of office???

hypocritical, presidential-wannabe, in the pool.

It means, not that you apparently care, that this asshat, who set himself up as a moral authority and figure, will likely have no further chance to legislate how the rest of us should live.

I can speak for no one else here, but me, however, I am a much more moral person than this turd: I have a rock-solid marriage of 20+ years; I don't have affairs; I'm a good mother and wife; I'm kind to those less fortunate than I am.....

I wanted to smack Chuck Todd for saying wow, human nature is just so fascinating and we ought to lay off and look at John Edwards...he had a point, but generally, it's the Republican politicians trying to bring down the dems on the morality plank. And the press helping them. I don't hear dems screaming all the holier than thou anthems right now that we do from the Vitters, Ensigns, and Sanfords. Give me a break.

Personally, I kind of wish the story about hiking naked along the Appalachian Trail on the summer solstice was true. It would have been a more interesting story! Heck, we've already had Ensign and Vitters.....this is getting kind of old. It would have been nice to spice it up with the neked story to add variety to the Repuglicans self destructing!

Who cares that he cheated. He left his post as Governor of the State of South Carolina. Not even a 7/11 employee can leave the store unattended. He is supposed to be in charge. If his state needed the militia to be called or declare a national disaster, someone has to take that call 3am Friday to 3pm Wednesday. This is friggin hilarious. Everyone knew where Bill Clinton was when he was gettin a blow job. In his office. This guy's freakin in Argentina. this is too rich

uraniumwilly's picture

"Sanford did more than travel and cheat. He consciously disappeared. That is a form of hate toward anyone who cared about him or depended upon him, at work or at home... There is something psychotically narcissistic about a need to disappear from the world in which you have real-life obligations."

I agree with anyone who would say this was pretty lame. But it's also terribly romantic. People do stupid things when they're in love and lust. I think it's a stretch that it's a form of hate.

Bluegal aka Fran's picture

And they leave town, turn off their cell phone, don't return emails, you have NO IDEA where they are, you try not to fear the worst, they're gone and you have no idea if they are alive or dead, for six days.

That's the cruelest thing I can think of, to do to a loved one. Separated or not, that's what happened to his wife and kids.

Now imagine if you were a boss and one of your employees did that? Would you call the police and file a missing person report or just assume he didn't want his JOB anymore? The people of SC just had that happen.

Speedbumped's picture

As I've posted elsewhere in this thread, this HAS happened to me recently. And it is indescribably painful, and seems intentionally hurtful and irresponsible.

But I still believe that at the end of the day, it's an exercise in extremely poor judgment...not psychosis. Where is the goood in portraying him as a monster, when the plain facts speak for themselves? Of course his actions demand swift repercussions and, one hopes, the end of his political career. And of course his actions will inflict damage on his family that will echo for years and years. I think what's unfair is to deliver an armchair diagnosis a man who has exercised EXTREMELY poor judgment as being mentally ill.

metric's picture

...but now that it's all sunk in, um, yeah. It's totally irresponsible to his family, his job, and the people who rely on him to serve their interests. Sure I may have a bender sometimes and be a bit slow or take a day off, but not if I have commitments to deal with, or without talking to someone. I don't have kids, but I called all my Dads on Father's Day because I love them and they are a part of my life. And this guy is off running around in South America with young kids home on Father's Day? Totally screwy.

In fact, when he said it on TV that first time, he just seemed stupid. I just hope it was some sweet, sweet lovin' he got.

The Simpsons.......Homer takes out a home equity loan to throw a party ends up being foreclosed, but his nice Christian neighbor, Ned, buys the home, fixes all kinds of problems, and lets Homer slide on rent. To see the full story link at bottom.

Marge and Homer, were acting very strange in this episode. Also a christian Neighbor buying the house for a non-Christian seems a tad far fetched to me. Very very Strange, the Simpson's sneaking some FOX news propaganda. Just out of curiosity, how many houses has the church of ladder day saints bought for familys in Foreclosure? How many Christian Neighbors bought houses next door about to be foreclosed on, to save thy neighbors?
They are sitting and waiting to buy the houses at rock bottom prices to make a profit off their neighbors bad fortunes, that's all I am seeing, am I wrong?

I agree with uraniumwilly.

Sanford's disappearing act was irresponsible and disrespectful NOT hateful.

spicegal's picture

Sanford's disappearance was totally reckless and irresponsible. He is the chief executive of a state, which is no different from being the chief executive of any major corporation. In fact, I'd say it's a bigger responsibility in many ways. The other question that comes up is how he funded these trips to South American to visit his mistress, although it turns out, Sanford's wife is loaded. So apparently Sanford is another GOP opportunist who married a rich heiress to jump start his political career.

MWing's picture

It's not the scandal, it's the hypocrisy.
Yes, Republicans are hypocritical liars .And when you point out it's about the hypocrisy.......... why its time to change the subject.
Family Values Platform, and all that preaching noise that makes our ears bleed, while secretly sneaking around in the middle of the night with their mistresses.
I am so sick of the GOP liars pretending to be the ones who hold the moral high road!
Yet another republican hater getting caught.
Governor push the big red button marked self-destruct now.

There is something psychotically narcissistic about a need to disappear from the world in which you have real-life obligations.

Sanford is without a doubt yet another conservative hypocrite, but this statement is naive. Everyone wants to disappear from their "real-life" obligations on occasion. If you think otherwise, then you probably don't have any real-life obligations.
