That could be a good thing. Run commercials against the party of "fuck america" and their bluedog buddies.

Frankly, I hope Conrad, Baucus and Nelson all lose when they run next time. I loathe them more than the repukes. They are sabotaging the democratic party for a few grubby bribery dollars. I mean really, a couple of million and they will let the country suffer and thousands die. What vile evil POS they are!

If I were a psychopath, I would join the republican party, and get in on the gravy train taking the Teabircher morons to the cleaners.

I think the tide is gradually turning.

As more and more people come forward.

The longer this is drawn out the better - until we win single payer medicare style medical care for everyone - whether as a public option or as universal coverage.

Time grinds slowly ..

When will government of the people, by the politicians, for the corporations perish from this Earth?

Not soon enough!

Hechicera's picture

I hope that is the outcome.

Sadly, things will also get worse, but as it does more should see the problem. Gives more time to educate and get the word out.

As long as we don't end up with a "compromise" (as in oops we gave everything away but no reform but we did that fast) bill.

xoites defends Constitution's picture

While i think looking at the long term strategy is important i am also thinking about all those who need to be covered and seeing Health Care Professionals right this very minute.

Time is running out for many people. I know many have needlessly died and many more will until we get the coverage we all need.

Abbybwood's picture

Just to be clear....

What is currently being proposed won't "help" anyone.

Read Chris Hedges article up top, "This Isn't Reform, It's Robbery" and you'll see a clearer picture.

Those in Congress who are owned by corporate America don't care about our health. They care about our bank accounts.

The founding fathers would eliminate corporations from having ANY influence on legislation in D.C.

(Of course, they'd probably be aghast at how "busy" the executive and the legislative have been over the years...their feeling back in the day was, "the more we stay on the farms and away from the halls of power the better for the people.")

He is in a disability group with others. I have been talking to the health staffers of my Senators and my Rep. This bill won't help him.

No mention of the devastating effect of booze and tobacco on men's sexual health in comparison, but maybe that's apples and oranges.

I don't see a problem with:

Males who smoke marijuana daily are four times more likely to have trouble reaching orgasm...

And most of us are previously acquainted with:

Other smokers had the opposite problem, experiencing premature ejaculation...

Seriously, did you catch:

Many of the correlations between marijuana and sexual performance became apparent only after accounting for other factors, such as age, tobacco and alcohol use and occupation.

Doesn't seem like a very definitive study.

From the Dean thing:

Felzenberg noted that discontented liberals helped cut short the administrations of former Presidents Lyndon Johnson and Jimmy Carter, and Dean could do the same to Obama.

Um, LBJ resigned because of Vietnam, which no one exactly attributes being the fault of discontented liberals, unless you're one of those revisionists who think being there for 10 years was really a "success". And Carter lost because the stupid boomer voters placed cheap gas as a bigger priority than weaning ourselves off of oil dependency. Gordon Brown is upset by Gadaffhi making nice with the Lockerbie bomber, even though his government was previously more concerned with Libya honoring its corporate contracts. Despite the "wasteful" stimulus, consumer confidence, along with stocks, went up today. But, hey, feel free to blame the $9 trillion deficit on Obama, and not Bush. Cheney has the gall to call the torture investigation political, since the Monica thing was totally objective. Target gets sued for disability discrimination. Mission accomplished: Iraq is a toxic waste dump. Even out of office, Bush continues to attempt to steal land-this time for his library. A pastor who happened to be black and female was murdered in McVeigh territory. Climate change is boiling Cali. Barry re-hires one of Bush's "little Eichmanns" to improve interrogation methods.

But he clearly gave up on the job in general. To my knowledge, there's been no President in history who didn't campaign for a second term, if he was still alive. But I might have missed one or two.

Andy K's picture

Polk didn't seek a second term. Teddy Roosevelt was only elected as President once- 1904- but declined to run for another term in 1908.

And why stop at the second term? Presidents weren't limited to two terms until the 1950's. Any two-termer previous to FDR could have run for a third term, but none tried.

Tequila's picture

I really need to keep up more often on these details.Though there's clearly a difference in motivation between the three Presidents for not seeking more terms.

Andy K's picture

He was 52 in 1848 when he decided against running, but from what I've read he was just worn out. He died of cholera three months after leaving office.

The Democrats' hopes of getting the health bill through the Senate relies on having the 60 votes to invoke cloture on at least part of the legislation. While they do have 60 votes now (including independents Bernie Sanders, a sure vote, and Joe Lieberman, a likely vote), they may not when the bills are actually being voted on. Two senators are seriously ill. Sen. Robert Byrd (D-WV) is 91 and in failing health, although he has appeared in the Senate several times in the past months and voted on bills. If he should die, Gov. Joe Manchin (D-WV) would instantly replace him with another Democrat, possibly Manchin himself. So this vote is safe for the Democrats, unless Byrd falls into a coma and is unable to vote or even resign.

The other iffy vote is that of Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-MA) who has crusaded for health care reform his entire life. He certainly won't miss voting if he is at all able to do so. However, he skipped the funeral of his sister, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, last week, something that was undoubtedly very painful to him. But apparently he just wasn't up to it. Whether he could be flown to the Senate and be able to cast a vote depends on his health in the next two months. As an aside, it is worth noting that when the civil rights bill came up for a cloture vote in 1964, Sen. Clair Engle (D-CA), who, like Kennedy, was suffering from a brain tumor, was unable to speak, so he pointed to his eye to signify "aye." Kennedy could do the same, if need be.

However, the situation is more complicated should Kennedy die before the bill comes to a vote (or the reconciliation bill comes to a vote). In 2004, the Massachusetts legislature, which is dominated by Democrats, was nervous about Gov. Mitt Romney (R-MA) appointing a Republican to the Senate in the event John Kerry were to be elected President. So they passed a law over his veto stripping the governor of the ability to appoint senators to vacancies and instead requiring a special election within 5 months. But having Kennedy's seat vacant for 5 months would be a disaster for the Democrats, so Kennedy himself is now calling for the legislature to change the law again, allowing the governor, currently Democrat Deval Patrick, to make a temporary appointment until the special election was held. As a safeguard against a possible Republican governor making a future appointment, the law could require consent of the state Senate, a body the Democrats are well entrenched in.

Count_Slappy's picture

Ted Kennedy is dead, and the majority is gone. Who dawdles this long and never uses their majorit for anything? The Dems just piss me off.

Any Republican who wants his seat will have to, at minimum, support a public option to win. And that candidate might even bring in some GOP "bipartisans" on-board who wouldn't normally jump in, just because they need to expand the base. At least in theory, anyway.

Count_Slappy's picture

That's just naive. Are you familiar with the last 30 years of Republican obstructionism and ignorance.

Tequila's picture

But Ted's from a state which legalized gay marriage. You can't win there as a Bible-thumping Republican any more than as a corporate suck-up. So the person from that party who hypothetically gets elected there can't be a bullshit artist like Olympia Snowe. They got to stand firm to the state, and not to the lobbyists. And anyone popular enough to win that vote would be someone the Republicans could latch on to to change their image-assuming they wanted to, of course.

The "Mass Plan" here is proving to be a failure. Residents are angry. They are not supportive of H.R. 3200 from what I understand.

I hope someone runs who can blow this fraudulent, corporate sham of reform out of the water and perhaps help deep-six the rotten Mass Plan as well.

For nearly a half-century in the Senate, Kennedy was a steadfast champion of the working class and the poor, a powerful voice on health care, civil rights, and war and peace.
"He has authored more pieces of major legislation than any other United States senator," Patrick Kennedy said. "He is the penultimate senator. I don't need to exaggerate when I talk about my father. That's the amazing thing. He breaks all the records himself."
He died without seeing his dream of universal health care come true. From his sickbed earlier this summer, he had worked the phones, making a final push for what he called "the cause of my life" in a rousing speech at the Democratic convention last August.
We will miss him very much...let's hope the Dems will find some balls and do this man proud...and pass a bill worthy of him...

We should be ashamed: A mean streak in the U.S. mainstream - http://www.independent.co.uk/opinion/commenta...
The US tolerates more inequality, deprivation and suffering than is acceptable here. When we Europeans – the British included – contemplate the battles President Obama must fight to reform the US health system, our first response tends to be disbelief.
How can it be that so obvious a social good as universal health insurance, so humane a solution to common vulnerability, is not sewn deep into the fabric of the United States?
How can one of the biggest, richest and most advanced countries in the world tolerate a situation where, at any one time, one in six of the population has to pay for their treatment item by item, or resort to hospital casualty wards?
Because Greed & 30 years of Reaganomics/Bushonomics/'Trickle Down' hocus pocus BS have been pimped to point where the lie is believed... But the next generation is doing something about that...

As one of the people who actually did invent the Internet (OK, its not like I'm Tim Berners-Lee or Doug Engelbart but I did build one of the first eCommerce systems that was actually used, back when it was still called the Arpanet) I would like to point out that Gore never claimed that he invented the Internet. Its one of the many, many lies that have seeped into common wisdom due to right wing propaganda.
