Giving the same value to fiction as to fact in the interest of so-called fairness is to mislead the American people and the press has become party to that.

I am not a rabid partisan.

I have long felt that it is readers and viewers of conservative media who could benefit from a more balanced discussion of what is at stake in our policy and the actions of our government.
-Joe Wilson

I think it's time for the people and the press, in particular, to be more vigilant about not giving equal weight to lies as they give the truth.
-Joe Wilson

No longer is there a quest for the truth so much as there is this apparent need to present both sides of an issue even if one is nothing but lies and distortions.

"That's offensive to me that they would take my heritage and make it into a Holocaust era type description." - South Carolina Representative Joe Wilson, back in November 1999, when he was still a state senator, regarding African Americans being upset that the Confederate flag was being flown over the statehouse.

"[W]e have a dictator, Saddam Hussein, who has chemical and biological weapons, who is developing nuclear capabilities." - Wilson, now a U.S. Congressman, on CNN, September 28, 2002.

"Sean, as usual, you're absolutely correct. In fact my wife also wants to tell you how cute you are." - Wilson to Sean Hannity on Fox "news," May 7, 2002.

"With the death of Strom Thurmond, South Carolina has lost its greatest statesman of the 20th Century." - Wilson on June 27, 2003.

Tax the Rich's picture

This cartoon is just another example of the complete insanity and ass-backwards reality of America in 2009.

But that's what happens when you have evil, greedy, sociopathic scumbags trashing good decent people for 30 years - and winning!

Rush Limbaugh is what a smart person thinks a stupid bigot sounds like.

In an era (the last 30 years or so) where the neanderthals of the right have revealed themselves to know no lows or restraint, the Left of this country must also be exposed for the wimps that they are for putting up with it -- e.g.,Remember Kerry's response to the Swiftboaters? WHAT RESPONSE!?

Right after Ted Kennedy's death recently, I saw a woman identified as a Democratic strategist acting more like a doormat than a Democratic pundit and not challenging Laura Ingraham's assertions that Ted Kennedy had been on the wrong side of history. Instead of coming back and getting in Ingraham's face with a comeback like, "Oh, so Ted was wrong about Iraq?! Are you Laura still for invading Iraq, against Title 9, Civil Rights, COBRA, raising the minimum wage ...???". Instead, this woman just sat there, shook her head, and laughed. That was it basically. I can't remember her comeback, because it really wasn't a comeback. Instead of possibly planting a seed or striking a nerve in the mind of the moronic lemmings who watch Fox news by coming back strong with a comeback worthy of a Youtube following, the lemmings who watch Fox come away from such an exchange emboldened.

Rightwing bullies, just like schoolyard bullies, such as Ingraham, O'Reilly, Hannity, and Beck, et all, only understand one thing: A return punch in the face. In other words, if a Liberal, Progressive, or Democrat is going to agree to appear on TV with a snake, damn it, prepare to treat it as a snake! Taking the high road, while laudable, does not work with many of these clowns. If one is going to appear on O'Reilly, damn it, expose him for the fraud that he is and stop playing footsies with him. When it calls for it, damn it, go for the jugular!

ctalk's picture

The problem too is subconsciously many liberals hear the word "right" or "grand old party" and it is like shooting yourself in the foot because it automatically puts a positive spin on these crooks and liars. Control the language and you are half way there to winning.

Brazil's system, which braved the crisis without the major bankruptcies and bank nationalizations that have reshaped capitalism in the rich world, is likely to be seen as a promising model by the group of developed and emerging powers.

Brazil's strong public bank presence provided a liquidity buffer at a time when private banks were reluctant to lend. The relative underdevelopment of the Latin American country's credit and mortgage markets also meant financial institutions were less exposed to the shadowy financial products that pushed the global banking system to the brink.

But analysts say Brazil's strict capital requirements and broad central bank oversight were especially important in helping to shield the banking system.

"Brazilian banks are coming out well because of the strong regulation in the financial system, which avoided a liquidity crisis in local markets and solvency problems," said Ceres Lisboa, a senior banking analyst at credit ratings agency Moody's Investors Service in Sao Paulo.

"Brazil today can serve as an example of bank regulation."

"Egotism is the anesthetic that dulls the pain of Stupidity" - Frank Leahy

Sen. Tom Harkin (D-IA), the new chairman of the HELP committee, is certain the Senate will pass a public option, he said today on CNN's The Ed Show.

"I thought he [the president] was very clear: We've got to have one," Harkin said. "And believe me, we're gonna have one."

He dismissed the belief that the Senate does not have enough votes to pass a health care reform bill if it includes a public option.

"We don't know that because we've never voted on it!" he said.

Harkin, who's taken over the Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions after Sen. Ted Kennedy's death, said Congress would have a bill by Thanksgiving.

Vice President Biden also said today that the bill will be out before the November holiday.

Last night in his joint address to Congress, President Obama criticized — and praised — the actions of both Republicans and Democrats in the health care debate. While he said that he still supports a public option, he also said that he was open to “reforming our medical malpractice laws” to “help bring down the cost of health care.”

Responding this morning on ABC’s Good Morning America, House Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-VA) basically pretended that none of that ever happened. He said that Obama still hadn’t offered any “guarantees” that health care reform wouldn’t “break the bank” or “ration” care. (Obama actually did address both issues in his speech last night, saying that the plan “will not add to our deficit” and insisting that claims about rationing and death panels are lies.

if regular Americans lose this case to the super-citizen corporations which looks possible after viewing the transcript, it will have to be pointed that Floyd Abrams was not up to the task of upholding the statute.

Yes, but I think if the ruling doesn't go well, it will be more due to the balance of the court. In deliberations, I think Ginsburg is up to the task of presenting anything Abrams may have left out, with vigor, despite her age and health.

The good part was the tone of Sotomayor's questions. The fact we don't have another Thomas/Scalia/Roberts clone on the bench in that spot is Obama's fault. The make-up of the Supreme Court at the end of Bush's last term was very disturbing to me. You're correct, it still isn't well-balanced, and we may have hell to pay, but at least it didn't get even worse on the last appointment.

What happens when Ginsburg steps down concerns me, too.

I've noticed the advertising on the side is sometimes at odds with the content of this site, for instance there is as I write this an ad for newsmax.com asking if I like Sarah Palin. And on other ocassions I have seen an ad promoting the column of Ann Coulter as well as ads for various wingnut books.
Just wondering, does this mean that the ad space on this site is open for the ISP to put up whatever? I am in SE Arizona using COX communications as my ISP and this area is fairly conservative.
I'm just wondering why I sometimes see Coulter and even Billo being advertised as something more than souless leeches on C&L.

How screwed/f***ed up are they? Wall Street Is Gambling on How Soon Old People Will Die: By Mark Ames - http://www.alternet.org/workplace/142531/wall...
It sounds too gruesome to be true, but the bankers have already shaken the silver out of everything that had value in America -- except for the elderly. -- Now we know why America's oligarchs are fighting to keep the rest of us stuck in the world's worst health care system: the more we die, the more billions Wall Street will earn.
A recent article in The New York Times exposed how Wall Street is licking its lips over a new scheme to make hundreds of billions in profits by creating financial instruments that will profit off of millions of terminally-ill Americans' agony, desperation, and death. The only thing standing in the way of this massive new Wall Street scheme is the kind of health care reform that might allow Americans to live longer lives.
Yep, this is what we spent trillions of dollars bailing out Wall Street for: so that they can kill us for profit. -- It sounds like something out of an old sci-fi flick like War of the Worlds, with America's billionaires as the brutal aliens harvesting our humanoid blood and tissue to fertilize their country club golf courses. Yet it makes logical sense: Wall Street has nowhere else to turn for its fat profits.
Our banking class has already destroyed everything else in this country that had any value, from America's industrial base to the American Dream itself, its housing market--whatever Wall Street could securitize, leverage, flip or restructure, they destroyed for good. There's nothing left to strip and pawn -- except for our lives. -- Yes, it's sick as hell, so vile and evil that it almost defies understanding.

Obama Tepid on Public Option | The Progressive - http://www.progressive.org/wx090909.html
Now Obama has embedded into the health care bill a recessionary device—the automatic slashing of federal spending when health care costs inevitably go up. Obama also exaggerated the budgetary problem of health care when he said, “Our health care problem is our deficit problem.” Actually, war is our deficit problem—$3 trillion for Iraq, and more for Afghanistan.
Actually, bailing out banks is our deficit problem—several trillion more, when you count the guarantees. And Obama misled the country when he said single-payer would require us to “build an entirely new system from scratch.” No, it wouldn’t. The system is in place. It’s called Medicare. And it works very well.

Work damn you!

For the past few years, our little village has been graced with a statue of an Osprey, wings spread, perched atop I-beams that were acquired from the World Trade Center debris field. I will walk down and look at the statue. I remember, I meditate and then, I cry. I think about the friend lost, the pain and suffering of the dead and the injured, of their families and of the heroes who risked their lives and health in the rescue efforts. I remember the promises and the promises broken. I ponder the lives of people who were attacked and killed when we attacked a nation that had nothing to do with 9/11. I remember all of it in an instant. Vengenance may be the Lord's, it may be improper in the modern world, but the promise to bring the people responsible for 9/11 to justice was broken with ineptness and as much as I want 'vengenance' for the attack, I want the criminals who perverted the aftermath indicted. Rather than stoke some patriotic fervor, the President at the time should have worked to resolve issues with our enemies. Maybe we would've been better off than we are today, maybe not, but there is a slim chance we wouldn't have seen all the death and destruction we've seen in the last eight years. But that didn't happen thanks to a greedy bunch of elitists who used this tragedy to perpetuate their own agenda. I won't ever forget that either. History can't be rewritten.

To the families of all the 9/11 victims, you have my deepest sympathies! To the brave men and women in our Armed Forces, you have my strongest support! To the politicians in Washington, D.C., I'm watching you so that you do the best you can for the people you represent and if you lie to us, you should know, that there must be consequences, legal and proper, but consequences nonetheless!

And I agree 100%

and I appreciate it as much as I appreciate and support many of the comments and commenters on this site.
I still have some obligations to myself, promises, that I made in the aftermath to fulfill and that day is coming.
Today, though, is going to be a long day!

Thats because Bush et.al were lying through their teeth about Clinton's intelligence:

1) There were no WMDs in Iraq (according to the CIA and other intelligence agencies)

2) Saddam Hussein and Osama Bin Laden were not in cahoots but totally at odds with each other and there were no Iraqis in those planes on 9/11 but plenty of Bush Family cronies (Saudis).

3) The Bush administration told the whole world that the wife of an envoy who'd refused to doctor the truth was a covert CIA operative and then lied about having done so.

4) The world was appalled when the USA attacked Iraq against the advice of the United Nations. Only two countries (USA and UK) in the so-called "coalition of the willing" provided more than 3000 troops and only two other countries (Italy and Poland) provided more than 2000. The remaining 27 countries provided less than a 1000 troops each because the bully on the block was twisting their arm.

5) It's increasingly clear that the Bush administration had all the information needed to try to stop the attacks on 9/11 but didn't: we may never know whether that was incompetence or willful intent but they lied about that, too, in the face of a whole file of memos and their decision to fire a certain young lady in Wisconsin who'd blown the whistle on precisely that group of men.

Or, is the above sort of lying OK in 'Merka'?

the completely overlooked facts leading up to the attacks on the WTC and the Pentagon, we must never forget how our "gallant" leaders reacted immediately after the attacks. Our "President", when our country needed him, sat in a puddle of his own urine clutching a children's book in a classroom in Florida, while our Veep, fearing the Appocolyppes, flew off to hide in a bunker, in hopes of coming out later when all was clear to sift through the pockets of the dead.

If someone took an assault rifle to a bush pep rally?
The man would have at least been tazed, beaten, most likely renditioned and dissapeared to one of bush/chennys secret torture palaces.
You life destroied, your family destroied, and bush going hehehe.
republicanism is a mental illness!
