The unemployment is probably higher than reported

Bloomberg here

A series of pieces at Calculated Risk 1 2 3 4

They are all distressing but #4 on the increase of personal bankruptcy is especially telling.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics now admits it has been cooking the numbers:

BLS Discloses It Has Overrepresented Payroll Data By 824,000 Or 15%

Zero Master here

If they wait a while, all those unemployed folks will give up and the BLS can proclaim full employment.

Happy days will be here again, as long as you are not one of those 15 million souls camped out in tent city.

Most things we could have learned from Japan, but didn't.

The recession is over but the depression has just begun

Edward Harrison here

---

For thirty years there has been a massive transfer of wealth from those that don't have much, to those that already have a lot. But now the claim is made that those plutocrats are falling on… well it is not exactly hard times, is it.

The Greenspan/Bernanke expedition into the great bubble unknown has brought more than just a few back a little closer to earth.

The wealth of all 306,000,000 of us has gone from $62 trillion to $50 trillion.

Of that, 314 plutocrats are now worth a mere $1.27 trillion. That is 0.000001 % of the population with 3% of the wealth.

Brother can you spare a billion?

Forbes 400

America's super rich are getting poorer. For only the fifth time since 1982, the collective net worth of The Forbes 400, our annual tally of the nation's richest people, has declined, falling $300 billion in the past 12 months from $1.57 trillion to $1.27 trillion. Faltering capital markets and real estate prices, along with divorce and fraud, pushed the fortunes of 314 members down and drove 32 plutocrats off the rankings.

but... “The recession is over but the depression has just begun
Edward Harrison here” ... about sums up my thinking.

"The issue was and still is overconsumption i.e. levels of consumption supported only by increase in debt levels and not by future earnings. "

While I don't think that exactly states the problem, in as much as consumption was also supported by bubbles, there still remains the inescapable issue that we no longer produce as much as we consume. And the Federal borrowing bubble is the latest, and probably last bubble that's going to keep this economy going. Too bad we're not getting our house in order, starting with getting our health care costs in alignment with our ability to pay, along with universal coverage.

The last depression taught us that there was two kinds of people, people with jobs and people without. So far, hanging onto employment, until I'm thrown out.

Alice X - Chomsky Nader's picture

One of the Forbes 400 is probably not to thrilled about the attention:

As a man who cherishes his privacy, the attention Jeffry Picower received on Thursday must have made him wince. On the same day that Forbes revealed he had earned a coveted spot in the magazine’s list of the 400 wealthiest Americans, a new court filing added $2.1 billion to the $5.1 billion he is alleged to have earned from his participation in Bernard Madoff’s Ponzi scheme.

are worth more than the average worker, wouldn't they have to work 400 times harder than the worker? So they would have to put in 3,200 hours a day instead of the 8 or more that the average worker does. Hmmm, how do they calculate that?

SadButTrue's picture

Most of that is playing golf or tennis with other CEOs, or just sitting around drinking. For anybody else that would be called skiving off, but at that level it's high-powered networking.

few people in america understand what michael and bernie do

here is the neat thing

capitalism must self destruct

doing it now

few understand why it must self destruct

universal laws demands that is self destruct

profits over people

mega profits from the sick and needy

we are not a christian nation

we are anything but christian

christianity died on the cross in america

we are selfish and arrogant and think we are a chosen nation by god. fools to think that.

ysbaddaden's picture
)O(

I don't know if capitalism needs to destruct, because what we have now is not really capitalism, but some perversion of it.

Diabolus est Deus Inversus

gypsykat's picture

Capitalism rewards greed. That is the bottom line for why it is failing. There needs to be some checks (or maybe laws) that will limit greed. Unfortunately the greediest and smartest rise to the top. Since the amount of money and profits are a finite amount, the math will tell you that as the greediest get richer, others get poorer. There are also some generous and fine rich people, but when a CEO takes millions in bonuses in a year in which the company is losing tons of money, that's just flat out greed.
I think countries that have a combination of democracy and government run programs, the balance between the 2 seems to be working out well. IT's a kind of check and balance on human greed.

Alice X - Chomsky Nader's picture

They have government run programs BECAUSE they have democracy.

People vote and they demand results, the politicians respond.

We have a very weak democracy.

We vote, half of us, we hear speeches promising results, the results we get favor the rich, powerful and connected.

That is a very weak democracy.

Did you see the 4 part Fox news report they referenced? It was pulled shortly after airing and can only be seen on certain websites.

Also, did you see these Israeli groups? I heard that one of their gigs was top sell these little whirly bird RC indoor flyers, and I saw them at our local malls several times around that time, but had no idea they were a front for something else.

It's the Senate. Max Baucus, from Montana, that doesn't have a million people, is controlling health care reform. How 'bought ending corn subsidies, Max?

I don't know whether it's correct, but it says "Did you know that 16% of the population of the US can elect 68 Senators?". If it's not correct, it's close.

The Senate is a large part of the problem. There is no reason why Americans should think we're number #1 in democracy any more.

Timjoebillybob's picture

This country was never set up to be a Democracy, it is a Republic.

ETA technically we have a constitutional democratic republic (we have a representative government(republic) that we elect(democratic) that is governed by law (constitutional)

And there is a reason for the way the Senate and the House of Representatives is set up. They are set up that way to prevent tyranny by the majority and the minority.

The House has votes based on population to help ensure against tyranny by the minority, ie the 30 states with the least population cannot override the 20 states with the highest population. The Senate is the reverse in that all states regardless of population have an equal vote to prevent tyranny by the majority, ie the 20 states with the highest population cannot run roughshod over the other 30.

People here may be receptive to hearing about the child care, education, and health benefits, but they will immediately question the cost. How much do the Swedes pay in taxes? How does it affect the private sector, innovation, etc?

Kathleen Sebelius: “Autism Now Hits 1 in 100 Children. We Have No Idea Why.”

Birth cohort study from 1994 to 1996 increased a rate of 50%. Both had same diagnostic criteria.

1) For the 1994 birth cohort, Hepatitis-B vaccine was given to 27% of all newborns, but in 1996 it had jumped to 82%.
http://www.cdc.gov/nis/

2) An abstract just published in the Annals of Epidemiology said that giving Hepatitis B vaccine to newborn baby boys more than triples the risk of ASD.
http://www.annalsofepidemiology.org/article/P...

3) A study just published in Neurotoxicology reported that infant male primates who received one dose of Hepatitis-B vaccine were far more likely to display developmental delays than unvaccinated controls.
http://www.thoughtfulhouse.org/pr/delayed-acq...

4) A study last year in Toxicological and Environmental Chemistry showed that boys getting the 3-shot HepB vaccine series were eight times more likely to require early intervention services than boys who did not have the series.
http://www.informaworld.com/smpp/content~cont...

5) A study in the journal Neurology found that children who received the Hepatitis B vaccine series were 50% more likely to develop "central nervous system inflammatory demyelination" than children who did not receive the vaccine.

Midnight Rambler's picture

#2 is a report on a slapdash statistical analysis by a graduate student, not a full article. They found a total of 31 cases of ASD out of 7486 vaccinated subjects, enough for random chance to cause a major fluctuation. It also claims that non-hispanic white boys are 61% less likely to get ASD than non-whites, which can seriously skew the results; and even if you accept their conclusions, they were only comparing those who received the vaccine in the first month vs. those who received it later or not at all (i.e. the latter is all one category).

The Neurology article is related to multiple sclerosis, not autism, and the results they found pertain only to a specific brand of HepB vaccine; the others had no effect.

In other words, anti-vax autism BS is still BS.

CafeenMan's picture

Are just like right-wingers. They lie, falsify research and skew data to get the answer they want.

Real scientists have found no link between vaccines and autism.

That doesn't mean there isn't a link but it does mean those who really care what the truth is don't have to lie about the results they have. And they're still looking.

curtilingus's picture

Real scientist tell us corn syrup is good for us, all pharmaceuticals are safe, and that there is no problem adding pesticides and using factory farm methods to raise food.

WTF is a "real" scientist?

I can't claim to know too much about the autism, vaccine link, (my 48 year old brother has mild autism) but I think 40 vaccinations in your first few years is a little much, don't you?

golden joe's picture

Curt, there are people paid to hit the blogs and try to discredit anything that shows there is a problem in the vaccination program.

Notice only one study is criticized. I would agree that one has its weaknesses (which the authors note) but it illustrates a trend of findings and there are increasingly more studies showing a concern.

What is needed are the double blind placebo studies that have never been done even on a single vaccine: what are the long term implications and outcomes of vaccinated vs unvaccinated populations for a single vaccine or multiple vaccines? There are enough people who do not want to vaccinate to find a population large enough to do so. FDA/CDC wants coverage rates of 95% vaccinated. From the 5% not vaccinated they could find those individuals and still have their "herd immunity" target rate they seek.

As the rate of autism increases and more and more parents and individuals experience what has already happened to many others - the public health officials and pharma interests will no longer be able to hide behind the fixed epidemiological studies they hold up as "proof".

This is not a "dem" vs "rep" issue. This is a money interests and greed issue being held out as a "public good". Currently the same people developing vaccines are the same people deciding they are safe and should be "mandated".

We need a vaccination program - but it must be held accountable for safety as all other medicines are required to go through - double blind studies comparing treated to untreated. Only vaccines are allowed to fore go this kind of science and safety testing.

But go ahead, hold up people asking for the standard of safety studies to be finally done as "quacks".

curtilingus's picture

Golden joe I enjoyed your post. Not sure who your last comment was directed at, the quacks remark.

I never stated anything in my post about either side being a quack, in the event it was directed at me.

The answer is normally - "Well, they've sacrifised years in studying and education is expensive, you know..."

And WHY is education expensive?

I live in Austria where ANY University is FREE!

And I wouldn´t even try to scratch the helthcare problem that the US face - it is unbelievable and no wonder that nobody here understands it.

How is it possible?

I guess when people are comparing the first president, who acctually does something about it to Hitler, the problem lies much deeper.

dont republicans just laugh at things like this? they think working together for a better country/world is a joke.

project's picture

Republicans have something wrong with them. These are people that believe if I can fine a way to do it so can you. But at the same time they believe in a magical god in the sky, that made everything, see's everything, is involved in everything that happens. That everything that happens, happens for a reason. That it is gods will. They don't believe in evolution, they believe the world is younger then the written history. The ones that have never been sick beleive they deserve health care and you don't. They think if they can afford to send their child to college and you cannot that their kid should be able to tell yours what to do. But the thing that gets me the worst is their inability to listen or even focas on what is being said. They all seem to have ADD. If you bring up a point you get a long line of unrelated horse shit that has absolutely nothing to do with what you are talking about. They believe and therefore they don't need to listen to anything they don't want to hear. It has gotten much worse in the last 9 years. It brings me to my on final point that has been proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that . Republicanism is a mental illness. 25% of the country is stark raving mad!

Find the Moore-isms in this clip more distracting than helpful. While it is true that boomers were raised on cowboys and indians and that could say something about the psychology of competitiveness, clips from the Grapes of Wrath and The Jungle would be more appropriately illustrative of what Sanders was conveying. First impression is that the clip isn't working for me as well as I would like.

Festering Lily's picture

It is distracting (in between the sales pitches for Sander's url) and I don't think the attempt to reach people with public domain visuals who would turn off Sander's already dumbed down socialist catechism is going to work. That's why people like Moore and Colbert are geniuses. They get straight to the mainstream consciousness of Americans through comedy.

...lives with the top 1-2% of the wealthiest people in America. They have been controlling the collective wealth of this nation for decades. They control the Federal Reserve, Wall Street, the media, the insurance companies, the banks, the retailers, the hospitals, the schools, the law enforcement and even the Government. Funneling everything to them. Because of this the ranks of the poor and unemployed have grown in that time. Thanks to the criminal Bush Administration this growth has tremendously sped up. Just this morning, it was reported that almost 300,000 more jobs have been shed. And again guess who got the blame? President Obama. Whom has held office less than a year. They want people to forget the eight years of tax cuts for the wealthiest and the deregulation of the banking industry with no oversight...the true reason why this country is having difficulty with economic recovery and is still shedding jobs. More people are having to do with less even losing their homes, while the wealthy laugh all the way to the bank. Frankly when Obama said, after taking office, he would let the Bush tax cuts expire instead of rescinding them on the spot, the writing on the wall became apparent. That was the signal for the Republicans to begin a smear campaign on every level imaginable that borders on outright sedition. President Obama has let this fester for far too long...I only hope his action of 'we will call you out' is not too late and he sticks to it. The Republicans are tirelessly stoking the antidemocratic fires of anti-Obamaism not only at the expense of their own party, but also at the expense of the country itself. Forming divisions in the population where none should exist, just so all the power and wealth can stay in the control of as few hands as possible. Capitalism is no longer a good thing when people start to die because of it.

Government + the Federal Reserve = organized crime
