non political rant, it's o.k. right?
The port of Long Beach/Los Angeles instituted a $100. fee for truck port entry a few years ago. An average of 7mm containers are shipped every year, so that's 700mm per year in pure profit. They have since instituted a night time program where the fee is $70. so alot of businesses try to return containers at night. So let's just say they get about $500mm pure profit every year. This money doesn't go into upgrading the port - it's actually sitting in some account somewhere accruing interest.
Now they just put into effect a new regulation that states no trucks older than a 2006 model will be allowed in port. O.k. for those of you who don't make a living importing or exporting - I'll say it, What the Fuc*!
Over the past year dozens or perhaps hundreds of trucking companies in the Los Angeles area have gone out of business. Now this. Seriously, how many companies have trucks 2006 or newer? Want to buy a used one for your business? Go ahead, but you can't bring it to port.
Now we can't ship and we can't pick up because there are only so many trucks available for literally hundreds of thousands of containers. The entire west coast supply chain is going to be messed up. Which means the worlds supply chain is going to be effed up.
Man, our country is so screwed on almost every level. The rich just keep getting richer. But this latest move is going to bite them in the ass.
totally.
Thanks for the sympathy - I'll take it.
who's a trucker, and have been out on the road with him a few times. It's given me a great respect for what a hard life it can be, and how awful truckers get treated by both the companies they're working for and the places they're delivering to/from. Pretty much everything in our lives that we can touch has been transported by a trucker, and more and more the independent ones are being shut down by rising costs and corporate greed. You have my sympathy and my respect.
are they letting the Mexican truckers in?
But I doubt that it is pure profit, I assume they have scales and people to operate them. And do they search on the way in or out? My guess is either the shipping lines have long term contracts and the costs to run the port went up higher than they figured so they just passed it along to the truckers or they are keeping the price down for the shipping lines to keep them coming to that port and are passing it along to the truckers. I'm not saying that they're not making any money off of you, or even that they're not giving you the common courtesy of a reach around. Just that I doubt that it's pure profit.
But 2006 and newer? That is BS. I could think of a couple reasons why though, 2006 and newer diesel light trucks and cars had to be ultra low sulfur only, I'm pretty sure it's the same for semis. You mentioned in another post about having to upgrade the smog equipment, might be more of the same.
The other reason is that they want better/more rail capacity and if they get too backed up they can cry to the feds for funding for it. And if they increase the rail capacity of the port by enough, well the town is going to have to upgrade theirs also, then... But that's enough tinfoil for now.
He tells me there are two places he does not like to go. NY he says he will not go to NY again and California he says it's like entering a communist state.
I think he exaggerated some but 2006 on trucks wow.
I wonder how they came up with that?
I based my post on a phone call I received yesterday. However, I just received the official letterhead. It states "All trucks from vehicle years 1994 - 2003 are now banned from port."
Again, the main problem is they just made everyone update the smog systems on their trucks a few years ago. 2003 is not as bad as 2006, but the way you make money in any business is by holding onto and making use of your assets as long as possible. I really wouldn't consider a 2003 truck anitquated, especially if it just had a systems update.
As for money going into accounts. When the port is upgraded, generally it is the shipping line that wants to upgrade pays for it. When Cosco started bringing huge ships a number of years ago, the port said fine, you just pay for the dredging and set up of your docks/berth and feel free to go ahead. Which they did.
All of the shipping lines use their own, if similar, computer tracking systems. Which they pay for. When I say the port hasn't done anything with the money - basically they haven't. All the costs are passed onto the shipper or shipping line.
One of my good friends/rep.'s is an associate of the ports G.M. and he's said the G.M. confirms they've got more money than god just sitting in their accounts.
Of course that's second hand information. And it's still going to put alot of the remaining truckers out of business.
Who gets the money? The city, county, state, feds?? Or is it owned by some foreign company or conglomerate who are just interested in sucking profits....not supporting/growing commerce.?
"Egotism is the anesthetic that dulls the pain of Stupidity" - Frank Leahy
The Port of Long Beach is owned by the city of L.B. and it leases it's space to the various shipping lines, I believe the port of Los Angeles is set up the same way. As far as letting Mexican truckers in - if you mean ones coming over the border then into port, I don't think so. If your a trucker you have to jump through hoops to get an interchange pass with the port. I don't think they would give those to a non U.S. trucking co.
Oh, and a year or two ago they made all the truckers upgrade the smog equipment on their trucks before being allowed into port. Which I guess is fine, but it cost the ones I knew about 1k to upgrade.
So, the question is, if they just made everyone kiss their as* to stay in business (and the margins are tiny), why the new rules? What are they really trying to accomplish?
I don't know if you've read my personal saga, I've posted bits and pieces (and I apologize for doing so), but we just located 600,000 tons of material we can process and ship - that's 30,000 containers. What are we supposed to do if we can't pick up empties at port and return them for shipment?
to make new containers in China than to ship the other ones back, empty.
.
What is your conceptual, continuity?
we import and export through the combined LB/LA ports are more than 6mm containers imported per year and less than 2mm outbound.
the shipping containers to build modular homes? There was a real building interest about 4-5 years back; now I hear nothing.
While I'd figure that these would be a hard sell in CA--earthquake regs, the "Aesthetic Police" who exist to protect their blessed property values, etc-- what about other more tolerant states?
I had thought about buying a few acres in FL and building one on the land; they're easy to make hurricane-resistant.
Hey Pres Obama, where's MY tax credit??

Craziness.
It occurs to me (though I've had a little too much wine with dinner, so double check me) that there might be a Constitutional challenge to the new policy. It could be deemed either to violate the Interstate Commerce clause or to burden interstate commerce. Perhaps the policy can be struck down.
Not my specialty in the Constitution by any means, but maybe it's worth looking into.
Everyone is equally entitled to the pursuit of happiness. Wasn't that once self evident?
they put that new rail corridor in going out to a San Berdoo (I believe Colton) yard and their trying to keep everyone out of Long Beach as much as possible due to traffic on the 710, so they raise prices and restrictions to get as many as possible to use Colton instead.
they raise the prices to make it as inconvenient as possible in order for traffic to find other routes.
They don't raise rates in order to fund a better more effecient service. In other words, no physical upgrades, just tougher to do.

None of this should be news to Americans, the crooks have been in charge for many, many decades. We are so-oo-oo screwed.

The 'elites' (MICC) took over a while ago. But I'm not criticizing her or her book, which I have not read. In fact, I think it would be better if she and others would write more clearly and more often about this 'class' of people who are taking over, not just America, but the world.

Al-Balawi "started to change," says his wife, after the American-led invasion of Iraq in 2003.
By 2004, she says, he began to talk to her about his strong belief in the need for violent jihad against Western occupiers of Muslim lands, but he was not part of any organization or group. "He followed all of them, but from a distance," she says. "He was constantly reading and writing. He was crazy about online forums. He would go onto them and write severe, extremely hardline comments. He would cite verses from the Quran that talked about the need for jihad, and then write very tough comments based on those verses or on the sayings of the Prophet."More here.

Amazing how the faux media never mentions this very important fact that is well known on the internet.
Is it the 21st century yet?
back in early 2000 - the company I worked for had just hooked our computer up to the Internet and I was wasting 'company time'
trying out my new surfing skills.
I actually printed it out - all 90 pgs (I think) - and read most of it. I didn't make the 9/11 connection to the neo-con "New Pearl Harbor" until a couple months later, when W started talking about Saddam.
Someday, when some brave person steps up and tells the truth, we'll learn that 9/11 was just a ploy to drag the American populace into these never-ending Imperialist wars - kinda like the Gulf of Tonkin.

The same pattern has been repeated often, and the yellow journalism soon follows. It's an old trick for the elite.
Is it the 21st century yet?
...the new organization headed up by Robert Kagan and Dan Senor--"Mr. Campbell Brown"--? I heard him on the radio hawking their new war incubation machine recently.
It's a trick that keeps working, and working...
but it's called Foreign Policy Initiative (FPI)

the very clever name: "The Foreign Policy Initiative" or the FPI.
Kristol is also involved with them - Can't hardly wait to see what very special new plans Willie comes up with for our next imperial fiasco. I despise him, though not quite as much as Cheney.
"The organization's mission statement argues that the "United States remains the world's indispensable nation," and warns that "strategic overreach is not the problem and retrenchment is not the solution..." New policy = more war. Willie will probably try to arrange to have his Israeli buds drop in on the Iranians sometime....

But ugly goes all the way to the bones.
In the last thirty years we have been dealing with some of the uglyest people in the republican party.
I am not talking ugly in appearence. I am talking about an inner uglyness.
We are talking about people that really care nothing for other people.
The whole republican party since the days of saint ronney have been following the play book of power and greed. I do not think there is one republican in the house or senate, that has any reason other then greed for being there.
It is the major reason why everything is so messed up!
These people start with the me first attitude and live by it.
mathews finally ask a repub the other day to name one good thing ever done by a republican.
The guy could not give an answer. Why? Because there is nothing ever done by a republican unless it benefits him/she personally!
republicanism/conservatism is a mental illness and it is killing America!

Bush devil gets 30,000,000
I sometimes play around like that. They keep scrubbing a lot of stuff from google. At one point bush + devil, or + asshole, or + evil, or + ____, would net 5,000,000 images. Then, one day, "magically" it went down to about 532 images. Now back over 3,000,000 again.

That made me laff real hard.
But on to another subject I've been pondering lately. Why is it that nearly every day I hear something about Michael Steele? It's not just that he's an idiot. He's actually out there speaking for his party. But I had to actually Google who the head of the Democratic party is. Some guy I don't think I've ever seen named Tim Kaine. Now granted I don't watch the Sunday shows like Meet The Press, but surely somewhere, somehow, the head of the Democratic party might have something to say that makes it into the news or the blogs? What's going on here? I know that if I were head of a party which was trying to pass "sweeping, historic health care" I'd be out front and center having a thing or two to say about it. Where is he? Anyone heard a peep out of him lately? Just askin'.
have to be invited to share their opinion. Don'tcha know that? The far left MSM doesn't want their opinions.

I told him he should pull his head out of his ass and get some air.
It was funny there was about 10 righties there all but two left the room, one of the ones that stayed was evidently a glen beck or hannity fan all he could say was socialism.
I told them fox was designed for idiots and crazy people. I didn't make any friends but I don't want to be friends with people that stupid!
republicanism/conservatism is a mental illness and it is killing America!
First of all the party chair person is a lot more significant for the party that doesn't have the white house. For the dems now Obama is really the leader of the party. Also, the fact that Steele is in the news so much is indicative of him doing a really bad job. His main job is supposed to be bueracratic and behind the scenes, what used to be done in those smoke filled close door rooms. Courting contributors, making sure the best people run for open seats, getting them the support they need. That he spends so much time on all these shows and especially that he does paid speaking engagements and writes a self aggrandizing book, is one of the reasons many republicans are grumbling.
Citizenship before partisanship. The Cheney's are dip-sticks.
Cheney should be on the phone to his local elected representative, not hammering off angry and frightened memos to a two bit newspaper.
Hell, he might even be granted an audience with national security or President Obama if he were to come clean and start cooperating.

At least our air quality will finally go up again. What a concept! Fining the rich for a crime in a way which genuinely impacts them! The buck stops with Barry. Net Neutrality goes to court. Fortunately, since this would impact people's ability to download free porn, I imagine if it got all the way to SCOTUS, Thomas would vote against the telecoms. Remember that SNL sketch where they got the Biden impersonator to say the stimulus is working? What's wrong with cats?! CT waits too long to realize Joe blows.

I don't like them but I have to tolerate them in public places. However, as you scroll through the News items and approach the more regional of the items, in the New York area, when you click on the headline, you are taken to the New York Post, a rupert murdoch enterprise. If you have a Yahoo account, you may want to let Yahoo know that in posting those headlines, it lends credence to yet another right wing propaganda arm of murdoch's which is harmful to this nation and its politics.
