Robert Zirkelbach is with America's Health Insurance Plans, an industry trade association.

ROBERT ZIRKELBACH: Over the last year there has been an increase in uncompensated care as more and more people go without health insurance and aren't able to cover their bills if they go to the emergency room.

Health reform would prohibit insurance companies from rejecting customers with pre-existing conditions. But in exchange, the industry wants a mandate to make healthy people buy insurance, says Professor Marjorie Baldwin at Arizona State University.

MARJORIE BALDWIN: Otherwise premiums are going to go up too fast.

As hospitals and doctors seek reimbursement for uncovered health care from their patients who do have insurance.
the younger/healthy people are taking a risk and going without health care insurance. of course not only the healthy but the unemployed are going without health care insurance so the paying pool is becoming people that need/use health care services. this will also hurt small businesses. like president obama said today and many of us here know there will be more premium increases and more people without health care insurance.

“This shows how far the police state has advanced. A presidential appointee in the Obama administration tells an important committee of Congress that the executive branch has decided that it can murder American citizens abroad if it thinks they are a threat. . . . In no previous death of a U.S. citizen by the hands of the U.S. government has the government claimed the right to kill Americans without arrest, trial, and conviction of a capital crime. . . . What defines ‘threat’? Who will make the decision? What it means is that the government will murder whomever it chooses. . . . There is no more complete or compelling evidence of a police state than the government announcing that it will murder its own citizens if it views them as a ‘threat.’”

GOP blocks Obama labor board nominee

WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate Republicans have succeeded in blocking President Obama's choice of a union lawyer for the National Labor Relations Board.

The 52-33 vote to move forward with the nomination of Craig Becker fell short of the 60 needed to overcome a GOP filibuster.

Republicans have held up Becker's confirmation for months. They say Becker would push an aggressive union agenda at the agency that referees labor disputes between unions and management.

The task for Democratic leaders turned more difficult when at least two Democrats joined Republicans in opposing the lawyer

Pres. Obama to consider recess appointments for stalled nominations
By Tony Romm - 02/09/10 01:47 PM ET

President Barack Obama on Tuesday signaled he could appoint nominees to key federal posts while Congress is on break next week.

At a rare appearance during Tuesday's press briefing, Obama criticized the upper chamber for hanging up a number of those appointees so far -- a moot manuever, he added, seeing as the chamber often grants "overwhelming support" to those candidates when their final confirmation votes arrive.

Water punishment for US child

A US soldier has been charged with assault after allegedly punishing his four-year-old daughter with water, police in Washington state have said.

Sgt Joshua Tabor dunked the girl's head in a sink full of water for not reciting the alphabet, police in the town of Yelm said.

Yelm police chief Todd Stancil said Sgt Tabor was arrested on 31 January.

The girl was then found hiding in a locked bathroom in the soldier's home, Mr Stancil said on Monday.

"From what I understand it is very similar to waterboarding," Mr Stancil said of the alleged offence, according to the AFP news agency.

"And to make it only worse, the daughter is afraid of water," the police chief told AFP.

Waterboarding is an interrogation technique that simulates drowning and has been banned as torture by the US.

Officers were called after Sgt Tabor was seen walking around his neighbourhood holding a Kevlar helmet and threatening to break windows, the police chief added.

Sgt Tabor posted bail of $10,000 (£6,400) on Monday and has been confined to barracks at his base in Washington state.

Sgt Tabor is a helicopter repairer who served in Iraq from 2007-08.

RAHM SUCKS!!!!!!

According to the New York Times, the "White House on Thursday signaled the outlines of its strategy for breaking the partisan logjam holding up President Obama’s agenda." And that outline is the most depressing thing I've read on the chances for health-care reform.

With Mr. Obama’s health care overhaul stalled on Capitol Hill, Rahm Emanuel, the White House chief of staff, said in an interview that Democrats would try to act first on job creation, reducing the deficit and imposing tighter regulation on banks before returning to the health measure, the president’s top priority from last year.

[...] Mr. Emanuel, the chief of staff, said he hoped Congressional Democrats would take up the jobs bill next week. Then, in his view, Congress would move to the president’s plan to impose a fee on banks to help offset losses to the Troubled Asset Relief Program, the fund used to bail out banks and automakers.

Lawmakers would next deal with a financial regulatory overhaul, and then pick up where they left off on health care.

I am in the absurd predicament of having to cast a wide net in case someone reading this should care... the most horrendous example of political corruption is taking place in Memphis, Tennessee right now:

we need help, America! Crooked Memphis politicians have stolen Elvis's Last Ride from the folks who formed the grass-roots organization to save it -- is nothing sacred?

risk from something seemingly benign--urban trees--I know that many cities are VERY concerned with "old school" type things, from bus benches to playground equipment. A large, wooden, one-off rollercoaster must be an amazing potential liability for a mid-sized city.

That said, it's always sad to see these things go away. There are never enough collectors or museums to preserve all of our old memories. Hopefully it works out for the city residents.
