Speaking of Bachmann, I filled out the census today. As a genealogist I consider it a duty. ;)

I haven't watched the Who Do You Think You Are? show yet (I have the first two episodes waiting for me on DVR), but I hope the Census Bureau thought to sponsor the show. You can bet Ancestry.com will be playing up their census record image files in the commericals.

I was happy to see that Michael Moore wants Dennis Kucinich to stay true to his principles and vote "NO" on the bill unless:

1.) There is a public option

2.) His amendment saying that states have the right to opt out of the legislation and go to a Single Payer system without the threat of lawsuits from the insurance companies.

If Kucinich caves....THAT would spell a real loss of "hope" for me.

When will government of the people, by the politicians, for the corporations perish from this Earth?

It was no "coincidence" that while Vice President Biden was visiting Israel they decided to approve 1600 new housing units in disputed East Jerusalem.

The fact that Palestinians half-jokingly complain that "every time a U.S. official comes to town, Israel announces another controversial housing project" makes it clear that Israel not only does not care what the position of the U.S. is related to it's construction on lands it seized during the 1967 Middle East war, it obviously feels it does not need the $300 billion we "give to it" each and every year.

The United Nations and most of the world view Israel's settlements as illegal under international law, but Israel continues to expand them. And now, in the face of war crimes charges resulting from their latest major military strikes in Gaza, we have Oriella Ben Zvi, a Tel Aviv political consultant declaring, "There's a bunker mentality. Picking a fight with Biden is a way of saying, 'We don't take dictates from anyone, not even the U.S.' "

Okay, I will accept that logic. Then the next step should be for the U.S. State Department to demand that A.I.P.A.C. register as a foreign agent (which would mean they would no longer be allowed to interfere in U.S. political elections/lobbying), that all illegal settlements built since the end of the 1967 war must be returned to the Palestinians, that all existing construction must be stopped immediately and that Israel must allow the Palestinians to use all the seized land to create a viable Palestinian state.

And until such measures are adopted, all U.S. funding to Israel will be cut off.

McCain's other BFF, Georgian President Saakashvili (aka "Tie-Muncher"), has created yet another crisis in Georgia:

'Fantasy world resident Saakashvili cries wolf backing bogus news'

Russia's foreign ministry says the bogus Georgian news report about Russia invading the country has damaged security in the Caucasus region. Many viewers missed a short warning that the 30-minute programme was fake - and panicked. Mikhail Saakashvili has distanced himself from the report, but said it's a scenario close to what could happen in reality. John Laughland from the Paris-based Institute for Democracy and Co-operation says the fact that President Saakashvili defends the hoax says a lot.

You really need to pay more attention to world events. This stupid hoax perpetratec by Saakashvili's own TV station has been all over the news.

Here. Watch these two other broadcasts on the same story, and then write a detailed report on the differences between RT's reporting and both AP's and AlJazeera's.

Substantiate your claim that RT's reporting is not to be trusted.

AP: Georgian TV Airs Report on Russian Invasion

Georgians panicked when a hoax television news program announced the Russian army had invaded and killed President Mikhail Saakashvili. (March 15)

AlJazeera: "Russia invasion" news stirs panic in Georgia

"Russian tanks have invaded Georgia and the country's president has been killed."

That is what Imedi TV, one of Georgia's most popular television channels, reported on Saturday night. It also broadcasted video of what appeared to be the Russian army in the country.

In reaction, many Georgian residents rushed into the streets in panic and emergency services were flooded with phone calls. Even a number of heart attacks were reported to have occurred.

But when the broadcast turned out to be untrue, widespread panic across the country turned into anger.

The pro-government channel later apologised, saying it was a mock newscast to show "what the worst day in Georgian history might look like". It also said it "should have clarified" that the programme was a fake TV report.

Relations between Russia and Georgia remain tense nearly two years after the 2008 war between the two countries, in which more than 200 Georgians died.

Al Jazeera's Matthew Collin reports from Tbilisi, the Georgian capital.

500 years of Russian expansion into its neighbors borders, followed up by Russification programs which force emigration of native peoples across the empire, force the Russian language and culture on those who remain, then use Russians in those parts of the former empire to keep them from asserting long-term independence from the empire?

Sorry, real problems facing Georgians, Ukranians, Latvians, Lithuaninans, Belarusians and Poles. We haven't been sticking our noses in- they've been asking for our help. And, for the most part, we've steered clear of giving them help.

ron's picture
So,

who should we invade, Russiaa? Sometimes these other countries have to work out their own problems.

But the patterns of Russian history tell me that they will be crossing their neighbors' borders again, and soon.

You need to get a grip on the Abkhazia/South Ossetia situation. Russia backed separatist movements there back in '95. Previously, the Soviets played "divide and conquer" by removing Abkhazia and South Ossetia from the Georgian SSR, even though the former two had been part of Georgia for a very long fucking time.

But, again, don't get me wrong. I don't view this as a case of "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" (that didn't work out quite as desired when we allied ourselves with a country that invaded Poland in 1939). Quite frankly, I think Saakashvili is a hack. But that doesn't mean Georgia should surrender its autonomy.

...inside of its own borders!

The Russians claimed that the Georgian military had killed 2,100 South Ossetians; when the EU investigators went in they saw that the number was actually under 200. This pales in comparison to the quarter of a million Georgians expelled from their homes by Russian-backed Abkhazian and South Ossetian separatists in '92-'93.

earlier today. She wanted to let me know that her oldest son had a heart attack. He is recovering but he was a smoker as I am and she's trying to encourage us all to quit. But as we got into the conversation further we went into the healthcare costs. He is 56 years old and because he always been at the low end of the income levels and for the past few years has been unemployed has no health insurance. We somehow turned to the healthcare bill and Bart Stupak and she said that she didn't want her tax dollars going for abortions either. I explained that that wasn't the case and told her that there are some Dems pushing that scenerio but our MSM is not putting out the facts and the damn republicans are stopping progress because they are committed to Obama's failure. She said don't blame the republicans. I have to apoligize somewhat because when we critisize the republicans, her being a republican takes it personally. What I may do tomorrow is call her and let her know that my rants aren't against the voter, it's against their elected officials. What they don't know because they are so misinformed is not their fault, it's the media's.

might have been prevented had he had some regular health care over the years? She'd have probably been happier. Then, how would she have felt had his heart attack been prevented and a fifteen year-old girl had had an abortion following impregnation by a molesting relative, for example. Would her son's prevented heart attack mean less to her?

Of course, the Stupjack legislation wouldn't cover the latter anyway, but a glimpse into her thinking would be telling, and a focusing on her family's possible benefits might resulting in a change of opinion.

Sorry about your cousin.

My mom and her husband just spent two days out here in CA, sort of doting over me and my strep throat, at the request of my friend on who's couch I've been sleeping. I didn't want to bother her (What was she going to do, make me Matzo ball soup like when I was a kid?) But I hadn't seen her in a year, and she won't be around forever. And I was too proud to say I needed help.

I won't say too many things to trouble my mom when she comes to see me on her own accord.

you were confronting her but she also was concerned on how the medical bills would be paid. I told her that she wouldn't be liable but if he was left in a trust, his share of the trust could be affected. Our system is such a mess, I only hope it works out for them.

fastfeat's picture

I was scheduling some (relatively) minor surgery (a cyst or tumor on my neck that's gotten considerably larger over the last couple of years that now even my long hair barely hides it), and my mom had said originally that she would pay for it (so I could 'get a haircut and get a real job' so to speak...). But as I started getting stuff investigated, specialists and scans/tests scheduled, and possible surgeons (in CA or maybe Mexico) lined up, my mom realized that this was likely going to run into the many thousands of dollars (the reason I'd put it off so long!!)

So she suggested (and gave me the number of one of her husband's relatives who handled insurance) COBRA. As I've not recently had insurance of any significance, nor do I want to bankrupt my mom, I agreed to look into the whole deal, albeit skeptically.

Our system IS fucked. As Grayson said, just die quickly. I sometimes only wish...

If you have any med schools around you, check and see if they have any clinics. Quite a few of them have low cost clinics that work on a sliding scale if you don't have insurance. They have a licensed MD overseeing it and med students/interns doing most of the work.

If it needs to be done on an inpatient basis, yeah it's probably going to be expensive. But if they can do it outpatient it can be reasonable. A friend of mine had a large mole removed from his back and tested for cancer for something like $100-150 or so.

Good article.

I'd already read or heard most of the details of the fraud behind Lehman Bros, but he went into some detail I'd missed.

Above all else, the problem here seems to be enforcement, not the lack of laws.

For all the deregulation that went on and contributed to the meltdown of both the financial sector and the economy, the problem at Lehman was not the deregulation, it was the out and out fraud.

Not to say that the financial markets don't need tighter regulation; they do.

And I'm glad he sees what's happening in Greece as part of the problem. I don't know how many Americans do, but the Europeans certainly do, as Goldman Sachs' actions in Greece have destabilized the Euro.

And predictably Goldman Sachs has now shorted the euro.

Nice guys.

Floridiot's picture

had any say in this they should be on the side of scrapping all confiscated guns, more sales on the other (new) end

They don't during the gun buy back programs. At least not the ones I've seen. In fact they swear that they will not attempt to identify any of the people who turn them in or run any type of trace on them. Which I don't agree with, they should at least run the serial numbers on them so if they have been reported stolen they can be returned to the rightful owner.

But yes most of the confiscated firearms get tested/traced. And if the firearm was used in a crime, in some cases they keep it as evidence after the trial.

And good thing the manufactures don't have any say in it. From what I've heard my local PD is getting ready to turn in all their service sidearms. They are going from 9mm to .40 s&w. The Democrats are running so scared right now regarding voting for this rotten piece of legislation that they don't want their votes recorded?? They're looking for political cover??

They're seriously considering using "The Slaughter Solution" where they'll try to say "the bill has been DEEMED to have passed"?

Somebody please tell me this isn't MY PARTY!!!!

If the Republicans were trying to pull this off we'd be in the streets!
