I'm working with a small group of people who comment on the Huffington Post and are sick of the insane arbitrary censorship. Some examples of their censorship can be found here:

http://bannedfromhuffpo.blogspot.com/2010/04/...

We are planning to go public with a petition. I would be grateful if anyone has experience with online petition tools, either ones that are great or ones to be wary of. Thanks in advance.

Geronimo.'s picture

Jesse Ventura was asked to be a guest writer on the Huffington Post and was just recently censored for his views relating to his show on TruTV, previously Court TV. I wonder why she does that?

I know there are some sites where you can create your own petition, but I've never done it. Good luck. We depend on our progressive media now more than ever.

I've had some people say "who cares about the Huffington Post anyway?" but I think its a site that serves as a substitute for the daily papers and nightly news. At least it does for me, in spite of its many imperfections so I think its worth pointing out how insane their moderation is getting.

NoBuddy's picture

... but then, I'll throw in the same comment again and it will post. So, I'm thinking, it may not be merely censorship, but also may involve technical glitches. They do handle volume over there on comments.

That said, I hear the word "Hell" is banned, but the word "He11" isn't. (Ones substituted for ell's).

NoBuddy's picture

... they did censor a comment by me characterizing the Republicans as the "Aging White Persons Party".

It's my true belief that the Republican party is exactly that.

Oi veh. Haven't been there for ages; sounds like I won't visit anytime soon.

If you look at the intro page on my blog: http://bannedfromhuffpo.blogspot.com/2010/04/... I've documented how insane the censorship is and how there are various kinds of patterns. I think they have some "bot" i.e., an automated system that automatically screens out some comments. But its not just based on using certain "bad" words. It tries to use AI and maybe this is one of the reasons it bugs me I've built some AI systems and we used to call bad applications of AI AS, Artificial Stupidity, and that is what they have IMO. Its as if you have some insane dyslexic nanny looking over your shoulder. Also, the censorship on articles can be terrible. There are lots of new age gurus who Ms. Huffington seems to be favoring who spout the most ridiculous nonsense about how quantum theory proves we are all part of the great quantum spirit and if you point out that they don't know their quantum asses from a hole in the ground (even if you say it a lot more politely than that) your comment never makes it through.

In a speech today at the Muehlebach Tower of the Kansas City Marriott Downtown, radio and TV talk host Glenn Beck urged a Kansas City audience to prepare for a “very violent storm.”

Beck shouted, whispered and wept his way through a one-hour-plus monologue that criticized the Obama administration, journalists, unions and some of the unemployed. “We are living in unbelievable times,” he told his enthusiastic audience.

Beck outlined strategies to help listeners survive the storm, including a reliance on God.

“They’re not an enemy of ours,” he said, referring to people he expects to provoke political unrest after the fall elections. “They’re an enemy of His.”

This is an issue where the libertarian right and the progressive left should be able to join together in opposition.

When will government of the people, by the politicians, for the corporations perish from this Earth?

Not soon enough!

Abbybwood's picture

Let me know where I can sign up to join that party, eh?!

Having some pretty sweet thunder and lightning up there where you are?

No storm today, actually cooled off a bit, but the last few days there've been powerful late afternoon storms.

So many places on the planet are either flooded or drought stricken. Central Russia is burning - record heat and fires - and the wheat harvest will be severely damaged. Drought and famine throughout sub-Saharan Africa. Flooding in Pakistan and China.

My spring keep pumping out 18 gallons an hour. I'm blessed back up here in the mountains. Gathering firewood for the winter and stuffing myself with blackberries.

Re: politics. I keep thinking, hoping, someone will come forth who can unite the populist rage on the right with the progressive rage on the left.

Abbybwood's picture

Maybe we all need to take a long hard look in the mirror to figure out who that certain "someone" is who will need to come forth to unite the populist rage on the right with the progressive rage on the left, eh?

Jesse "The Body" Ventura!!!!

Cue the Kabuki....

MountainMan23's picture

Oh, I've looked in the mirror, and I'm pretty certain that person is not me. I don't have the energy for it anymore. I'll write about it and advocate for it but I'm not the person to lead the crowds.

Besides, I think some crystallizing event will have to happen where both sides wake up on the same side of an issue; the BP oil gusher in the Gulf had the potential for being that event (maybe still does).

Perhaps people will start to refuse to vacate when their houses are foreclosed, and united around that common cause we will forget our partisan political differences.

New leaders will step forward when these events unfold.

Unfortunately, the way our world is going the new leaders who step forward will probably either suffer mysterious "accidents", commit "suicide" by shooting themselves in the head a dozen or so times or end up in jail for life on trumped up charges.

reading the book, The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying, by Sogyal Rinpoche..........humor is mentioned throughout the book.

Andy K's picture

Which way does he come down on it? Humor good, humor bad, or is it a mixed bag?

MaryK's picture

mystics teach using humor. I read quite a bit of Sufism many decades ago, and they considered Will Rogers to be pretty mystical. Uncomfortable truths can be voiced using humor, and be acceptable to far more people, than just blurting them out.

Maybe Beck should be considered a comedian.

Our government is always going on about wanting to encourage peace with the Muslim world. If they REALLY wanted to do that, they'd be talking to the Sufis. Enough with the Sunnis and the Shi'ites, who just want to eviscerate each other. Start palavering with the guys whose whole worldview is based on peace with EVERYBODY.

But I thought it was common knowledge that CIA backed death squads operated in Colombia for decades. What else is the Colombian Army? They've been committing extra-judicial killings for 50 years. That makes them a death squad.

It's the way we roll--all over Central and South America.

Andy K's picture

Now read that link and tell me what it states as fact, please.

I actually looked at a few other sources before I posted googling Colombia death squads...

MountainMan23's picture

Many other sources have covered this story.

It's called the "false positive" ("falsos positivos") story in Colombia.

Evidently the US pays the Colombian military based on the number of rebels killed.

So, the military death squads have been killing peasants, dressing them up as FARC rebels, and collecting bundles of cash.
