Our own John Amato on NPR

thumb_mediumamato_5ac03.jpg

Our Dear Leader John Amato was interviewed for a story on NPR's Weekend Edition Sunday this morning.

"You can't deny the fact that liberal blogs are a very powerful force in American politics today," Amato says. "And if you've been on the wrong side of torture, you're going to have a big problem with liberals and progressives."

Give a listen here.

Torture is for brutes, idiots and the lazy; pretty much describes 8yrs of Buchco.

Good job John. The others seem to want to make a big deal out of every move Obama makes.

Oh yeah, baby! Keep up the great work.

You know I kinda agree with giving Obama a chance. Um but, he did vote for telecoms immunity, remember. I know tho, C&L will stand up if needed. You guys did what needed to be done and I hope you keep doing it.

Last night as I soaked in my tub of Radox, Pears and Pinaud I was doing some light reading: The Nicomachean Ethics, where Aristotle was arguing that the ultimate good (Summum Bonum as per Jeremy Bentham, founder of Utilitarianism),is happiness. He contradicts Solon, and argues that, "Happiness, as we said, requires both complete goodness and a complete lifetime. For many reverses and vicissitudes of all sorts occur in the course of life..."

One could replace course of life with course of political life.

Didn't I mention I was drinking burgundy wine at the time?

Of course it was Carlo Rossi, hardly the most prestigious kind.

And I for one enjoy farting in the tub.

It's the closest I get to a jacuzzi.

Good on you John to push back on these cackling "what if" gossipmongers and simplistic fear projectors. I would say these media folks including NPR have learned little since the election. The "discontent" meme is largely a media invention that has been substantially overstated because they don't want Obama to get credit for anything redemptive that he has done---just an extension of what they did during the election. Why tell the truth when you can cast fear, uncertainty, and doubt? Think they would do a candid piece about the disarray in the Republican party? Doubtful.

Hey, I saw you on my radio this morning. I said "Hey, I know that guy (sort of)".
give Obama a chance and we will be giving him a ration of shit as soon as it is needed. Right now he seems to be doing a lot better than Bush is doing and bush is suppose to be the Prez. Fucking asshole.

When I see or hear Amato on a national broadcast of some sort I feel so proud. I feel proud of John and I feel proud of us. I have said it before and I will say it again. C+L is one of, if not the best blogs going. There are others that are real good but over here we are on top of every topic and its the comments that make the story. The commenters here are simply the best. The wittiest. The best informed (I get so much info just from the links posted that are off topic that are in the comments section). I have dreams about the comments here. Since the election I have not been as active here but I still check in all the time. It is my political (and sometimes general) news source.

I should mention that the quote above from Aristotle did not contradict Solon, but was part of a larger argument that did. But it was the part of the argument that held the point I wanted to spotlight.

Solon thought because of the vicissitudes of life one could only achieve happiness at the end of one's lifetime. Aristotle was arguing that one cannot prove there's awareness after death, and that happiness is active as opposed to death's inactive. His argument seemed to be that despite vicissitudes one could be happy if their virtue melds with noble action.

This seems to be the source of William Godwin's teaching in An Enquiry into Political Justice that a virtuous act must have a virtuous objective as well as outcome.

However, this was all pretty much in the public sphere, it was Christians that would make you miserable for what you've done, or even only thought of doing, although no one else may've been affected. Then they would try to sell you the medicine to disperse the suffering they created.
