Sarah Palin wants to dismantle Canadian healthcare?

Because she can see it from her house.

From The Canadian Press (syndicated)

Marg Delahunty has braved the wilds of the American Midwest to come face-to-face with Sarah Palin. Comedian Mary Walsh’s beloved character button-holed the former Alaska governor at a recent book-signing in Columbus, Ohio...

"Marg Delahunty" has been compared to the more famous Dame Edna, and Stephen Colbert owes her five bucks, too. Marg is a character, dressed up as some kind of "Canadian Warrior" right winger, etc. Here's a pic of her in full regalia:

I think she's got a Palinesque look to her, but anyhoo...

“We told her we’re from Canada, and we’re just looking for a few words of encouragement for the Canadian conservatives who have worked so tirelessly to destroy the socialized medicare that we have,” Walsh recalled Tuesday from St. John’s.

After being kicked out of the book-signing, Walsh and her crew then waited outside at a loading dock close to where Palin’s bus was parked. When Palin emerged from the Borders bookstore, Walsh said, Delahunty — dressed in a more toned-down version of her trademark warrior princess costume — called out to her.

“Hey, remember us, we’re the Canadians! We came all the way here from Canada!” Delahunty yelled. “When we asked you that question, we didn’t hear your answer.”

Palin strolled over, looking down on Walsh and her crew to tell them that “Canada needs to dismantle its public health-care system and allow private enterprise to get involved and turn a profit.”

“Basically, she said government should stop doing the work that private enterprise should do,” Walsh said.

There are no words, Sarah Palin. No words.

If private enterprise can turn a profit from healthcare then why are they against the government having a health insurance plan?

And isn't the reason our healthcare stinks is because everyone is more concerned with trying to make a profit and not about HEALTH?

right on_exclamation point here's picture

and I'm happy she met Mrs. Palin as Marg Delahunty, a feisty kick-in-the-a$$ liberal who's preoccupied with what's going on in the Canadian political scene. Mary is Canada's Jon Stewart, kinda sorta... then again, so is Rick Mercer, the acerbic comedian who pokes fun at everyone anytime... even Americans. :o)

With Sarah leading the way, 2012 is truly the end of the world for the Republican party.

We'll see. We can hope.

But imagine this scenario: The health care reform that passes is barely reform, doesn't go into effect until after the next presidential election, and people feel they are worse off than before, some because they are, and some because the media says so. Barack Obama is renominated by the Democratic Party, and the Republicans are just stupid enough to nominate Queen Sara. Believing that Know Knothing Knation isn't strong enough to propel Sara to the presidency, progressives go on the offensive against what they feel is a failed Obama presidency and a do-nothing, sell-out Democratic Congress. A three-way race really heats up, and the electoral college majority lands in the hands of . . .

I can't bring myself to finish the sentence.

Everyone is equally entitled to the pursuit of happiness. Wasn't that once self evident?

What'll Sara's platform be this time? She quit her governorship in '09 and will have been posing for the camera and giving softball interviews until November 2012.

No matter what the right wing / tea bag faction of the GOP has to say, Palin will still be too much of a joke as a candidate, even with the poor choice of Republican candidates who are already out there.

The way they are going, it's going to be the end of "America" :(

I'm so glad for any news of Sarah Palin's activities.

There are no words, Sarah Palin. No words.

Actually, there are only words. That's all Queen Sara is. She doesn't understand what she's saying. She's just muttering talking points that she's told will win her favor with Know Knothing Knation.

And, of course, subject to recall.

(Don't hate me. I like pizza rolls too, but I'm one of those who will occasionally indulge -- kinda like how I listen to Queen Sara for the simultaneous laughter and nausea.)

Definitely an indicator as to the sorry state this country is in , not good , flat out frightening . For my own peace of mind I often feel like giving it up , dropping out and not pay any attention to politics and what's happening anymore but we are the ONLY ONES to stop these lunatics and morons from completely taking over , it seems like this country is hopeless but to give it up and quit knowing the consequences , can't do it . We Canadians see health care as a UNIVERSAL RIGHT. Any politician that tried to dismantle it would end their career, and that of their political party-- forever.

“let’s hold our nose this one time” and hope, dear Neptune, we don't perpetuate this rancid continuum

Karen's picture

Most Americans think health care is a right as well. Moreover, once progressive programs, like Social Security and Medicare are in place, talk of dismantling them altogether becomes the proverbial third rail.

That's why those who benefit from the status quo are putting everything they have into stopping real reform. They know full well that if a robust public option or single payer becomes law, there will be no dismantling it afterward.

Everyone is equally entitled to the pursuit of happiness. Wasn't that once self evident?

That's why it is so important you get it, and NOW. My hope is, the health care bill you get is good!

Once people have it, good luck taking it away. How would any politician that wanted to dismantle Social Security fare?? Sure, they can bitch about it, but try dismantling it.

It's clear there is plenty of "pie" for the corporations, but what about working people who pay the taxes? It's clear you're on your own: no bailout for you!

“let’s hold our nose this one time” and hope, dear Neptune, we don't perpetuate this rancid continuum

for the damage they do to Americans selling them all the crap they make that's the bottom line.

Some one should point out to the old Moose Killer from Wasilla that the Canadian electorate has developed a nasty habit of dismantling any and all politicians who attempt to lay hands upon their public health care services.

with even worse "product" most of the time.

Our system is hopelessly f*ked up and beyond repair.

Karen's picture

The system is fubar. The way in which we elect representatives doesn't make any sense. We need to reform it.

It'll take a long-term, bottom-up movement to do it.

"The fact is that America's finest minds and souls have no voice in this chilling new corporate state that has evolved. And if we are not allowed a voice, if our monolithic system ignores us, pretends we do not exist, then for all practical purposes we do not exist. Therefore it does not have to offer us political candidates representing our views or change laws to reflect them. Nevertheless, we are out there -- millions of us."

I really hate having to defend Palin, but unless she made two trips over to them and there was a second quote that wasn't recorded, they heavily misquoted her in that article. She didn't say "dismantle" nor did she mention "turn(ing) a profit" as the goal. (ThinkProgress has the correct transcript, if you're interested.)

Again, I absolutely hate Palin, but it's really sloppy to have a printed quote accompanied by video showing that quote to be practically made up. Sure, the general point was the same, but "dismantle" is far stronger and more extreme than "reform" and actually saying "to turn a profit" is extremely callous--or would be, had she said it. I'm not saying she doesn't actually think that (assuming she thinks anything at all), but paraphrasing and quoting are two different things.

It's like hearing someone say, "Excuse me, I need to go to the bathroom," and then quoting them as saying, "Move it, sugartits, I'm about to drop the wickedest shit you ain't ever seen." Same general idea, but not exactly fair, eh?
