'Disgraceful' indeed: Fox crew ambushes NSA whistleblower

You all may remember Russell Tice, the whistleblower who recently stepped forward to reveal that the Bush administration's NSA spying program included journalists and thousands of ordinary Americans.
Bill O'Reilly says he wanted to "interview" Tice but he declined. And goodness, we just can't imagine why. So Fox sent attack-dog producer Jesse Waters and one of those crack Fox ambush crews to ambush Tice outside of his home.
You can judge the performance for yourselves. But in case Fox's producers wonder why Tice wouldn't go on their program, they need only watch Waters' performance here to realize why he was wise to refuse. Fox wasn't interested in what he had to say or what evidence he might possess -- it only wanted to score some points against Tice and try to discredit his testimony. And incidentally, since it's clear O'Reilly doesn't understand such things (since it's been decades since he's been anything approaching a real journalist in any serious sense of the word), the word of an eyewitness to such activities is usually considered sound evidence they occurred, both in the journalistic world as well as in a court of law.
Tice, for those who may not recall, was a major source on the original NSA wiretapping story, and for that he faced a right wing smear job depicting him as "mentally unstable".
One can only imagine what an interview with O'Reilly would have been like. Considering some of his recent tirades, it seems likely he'd have come uncorked in classic "Do it live!" style.
I don't know about you, but I find these ambush interviews -- particularly when they go to people's homes and harass them while they're unpacking their groceries -- profoundly disturbing. Not only are they deeply unethical, they're also so invasive of people's privacy rights that they have a distinctly totalitarian aspect -- especially when so obviously in the service of right-wing authoritarian propaganda.
So spread the word: If a Fox News ambush crew approaches you, give them a single answer, repeatedly: Andrea Mackris. Andrea Mackris.
It's the only way they'll leave you alone. Otherwise, they'll just use cheap and journalistically disgraceful tactics like these to use you so they can spew their propaganda.

He was a former anchor for Inside Edition back in the day that they thrived on this kind of ambush attack. Usually it was used to ambush some some doctor, or white collar type who was "embroiled" in some kind of low level scam or scandal, but Bill-0 REALLY DOES think this is credible journalism.
This is why FOX keeps him around.He has no real journalistic experience, and he has no ethics at all. I'm so sure that Andrea Makris is just just tip of the iceberg, that I'd be willing to wager on it for significant funds.
I'm sure they have a whole slew of things to hold over his head to keep him in line. He's not totally stupid...although there is a lot of evidence to the contrary. Fox deals with O'Reilly because he does the really dirty work, so they can keep their anchors with a sheen of credibility for folks that watch them.
We won't get rid of O'Reilly any more than we will Limbaugh, because they both serve a purpose for those paying their paychecks. Among thinking people, none of these yahoos have any credibility what so ever. The problem is, they aren't there for the "thinking people".

I remember Inside Edition. I thought BillO was on the smarmy side back then, too (this was in 1990). The way he used to compliment Maureen O'Boyle (while she was very pretty, he used to sometimes go over the top about it, and I used to wonder if she was creeped-out sometimes), was so cheesy, considering what the show was supposed to be about.
The best way to deal with any sort of bullies - and O'Reilly and his crew fit the profile - is to kick their asses and send them home crying to their mommies like little bitches. That's all they understand.

The main reason he does these attack "interviews" is because the person either offends Li'l Billy's sense of right and wrong (as if he really had any sense of right aand wrong, or any sense) or because he wants to get the people on his little dog and pony show, and these people are too smart to fall for that. As a Federally Protected (Ha!) Whistleblower, I know how difficult it is to subject yourself to this type of harrassment...once you "do the right thing", the entire federal agency and/or the whole government does not want anything to do with you.....there are many loopholes, rules and excuses to punish a whistleblower without it even looking like reprisal.....so Mr. Tice has the courage to stand up to that type of corruption, I'm sure he can handle Bill the Bully....

I do not believe that it is necessary to give Obama four more years in order to determine if he, like Bush, has committed war crimes since Obama has already ordered drone missiles to be fired into Afghanistan and Pakistan with the result being that innocent civilians have been killed for absolutely no justifiable reasons whatsoever. Are you kidding? I didn't watch the video because I've seen it all before. "Journalists"in America have been using these tactics for hundreds of years. You talk about a Fox smear and then imply that they are part of some totalitarian scheme like there's some difference between you. I've seen "journalists" show up at dead soldiers parents homes the same day as they found out their child was dead. News crews hanging around and trying to interview people whose children have disappeared or are laying in a hospital near death. You have to be delusional to think that any other news crew wouldn't do the same thing if it was a story they wanted. I don't like any of your type. I've witnessed news professionals joking about airline disasters and when I confronted their lack of humanity they offered up the old "we've seen so much, you can't understand the burden we bare". Maybe not, but I'll bet it's nothing like the burden of seeing your dead child and grief used as rating and propaganda material.
You're talking about the if it bleeds it leads approach to journalism, and the cynicism of some of its practitioners. Point taken. But what Fox does here is intentionally malicious--it is harassment. Fox may not be the only organization doing this sort of thing, but they are certainly the ones who are best known for being reich-wing propagandists, because of disgusting, unprofessional tactics like this.
Lurid journalism style was also big in the 1930's--there was a musical about it--Chicago.
But don't paint journalists with too broad a brush--I don't see Bill Moyers resorting to these sensationalistic tactics, nor does Nicholas Kristoff. Some of these are true professionals who really do try to make the world a better place.
When Bill'O stated that Sean Hornbeck enjoyed his time in captivity after having been kidnapped and molested for 4 years he showed himself as the ass that he is for all the world to see. As David Letterman said, about 60% of what Bill'O says is "crap". He is the crapper that keeps on crapping. There are any number of words that would work to shut down a "Factor Falacy" ambush: Hornbeck, Luffa, Fallafel, Andrea Mackris, $60 million lawsuit, Out of court settlement. O'Reilly's viewpoints are rarely taken seriously by anyone with an IQ over 110 and by a low percentage of those who have IQs over 100. There are just too many other people with a much firmer grip on reality. The sad fact is that he has a large audience which says something about many Americans.
I think everyone should take a look at 2:22. I wonder what may have been said in the 5-10 feet and who knows how many seconds/minutes where the simulated lense flare transition shows Tice magically fold time and space and find himself opening the door. The flare has a great masking effect on the transition as the camera swings and it looks as though it catches the glare of the sun. For all practical purposes whatever happened in those moments would have to fit 2 criteria to legitimately warrant an edit at that point. 1. It would have to be insignificant 2. it would have to be rather long. The probability of it of it fitting both of those criteria likely approaches zero. Those who caught the irony of his comment regarding editing the f-bomb out nailed it.
I wish O'Reilly's home address could be published, since he continues to go to people's homes. I remember when someone went to his and he wasn't very happy.

Most, actually all of the opinions I read on this subject sound like the rantings of zealots who happen to hate O'Reilly. Nobody seems to be willing to look at this fairly.
I've watched O'Reilly for quite a while and to be sure, he's opinionated. And sometimes his opinions are based on nothing other than his opinions and he uses false logic to make his conclusions fit his opinions.
But to be fair, that's not the majority of the time. Not even close.
I've seen him change his opinions 180 degrees on some issues when the facts he has at his disposal change. He has great respect for facts and likes to think that he forms all of his opinions on facts alone. Even though that's stretching the truth a bit.
I'd like to look at this situation with Russell Tice more in terms of what it would take for me to believe him.
Anyone can make statements of any kind about anything. How do you know whom to believe? Maybe Russell Tice is telling the truth, but was not able to smuggle any hard evidence out of the NSA when he was working there. On the other hand, maybe he's a liar or crazy.
The only way for a rational person to distinguish between truth and falsehood is evidence. Independent, tangible evidence. Something you can point to and say, "Maybe you don't believe me, but how can you deny this?".
Russell Tice either has no such evidence or he has some reason to keep it hidden. In either case, he has no credibility and no rational person has any reason to believe him.
Now if some other independent person, say Russell Twice would come forward and claim that he was in a position to see and indeed did see the same thing, then it's a different story. That's independent evidence!
But until that happens, I don't believe him!

How can you claim he has no credibility? If in one sentence you claim it may be hidden by him. Then go on too say "In either case," "no rational person has any reason to believe him."?
Can someone be found guilty of murder without the prime "evidence " of the deceased. I'm not sure who "Russell Twice" is but I'll wait to see if "Russell Tice" provides the proper facts for prosecution.
