Palingenesis: Just whose 'honor' was being 'restored' at the big Glenn Beck rally?
Sarah Palin's speech at yesterday's big GlennBeckapalooza, aka the "Restoring Honor" rally at the Lincoln Memorial, was really a pretty tawdry piece of typical right-wing agitprop, whereby they wrap themselves in the glory of veteranhood and the sacrifices of our young veterans in the name of Republican wars. Can you say, "Jingo", boys and girls? I knew you could! You betcha!
But I was especially struck by the way she attacked President Obama along the way:
Palin: I must assume that you too, knowing that no, we must not fundamentally transform America as some would want, we must restore America and restore her honor!
Yeah, so much for this being "nonpolitical." And there's a funny thing about this. Why, only the night before, Glenn Beck went onstage at the Kennedy Center and declared:
Beck: We are 12 hours away from fundamentally transforming the United States of America. [applause] And it has nothing to do with this city or politics! It has everything to do with God almighty!
So, is Palin disagreeing with Beck? Or did she just not get the memo that he was now adopting "fundamental transformation" as his own theme, after castigating President Obama endlessly for having suggested it? I'm guessing the latter.
And really, someone needs to ask the question: Exactly when did America lose its honor? How did we lose it?
Over at The Illiterate Electorate, Pierre Ross went out and asked exactly that question. The results are about what you'd expect:
As you can see, this rally was very much a political event for a lot of the people who turned out. They just left the kooky signs at home, mostly. But these Tea Partiers are agitated about abortion. Hey, I thought the Tea Parties were just about government spending and preserving freedom, right? Hmmmmmm.
Which brings us to the final facet of Palin's formulation here: She opposes transformation and instead demands restoration. And we know, too, what they hope to restore: the "principles" of the "Founding Fathers" and other colonial-era political thinkers. While basking in the reflected light of wounded veterans.
There's a word for this kind of politics: It's called, appropriately enough, Palingenesis. And we really don't want to be going down that particular path -- no matter how much Sarah and Glenn may try to push us there.

They say they are "reclaiming the civil rights movement".
Reclaiming it from WHOM? Did someone take the civil rights movement from right-wing xenophobes?
Back in MLK's day, guys like Beck called him a communist, and much worse.
The likes of Beck and Palin would have relentlessly attacked King, questioning his legitimacy and patriotism. The only good thing about MLK to these revisionist Charlatans is that he's dead and now they can pimp his messages to the ignorants.
It's actually fun watching these clowns try to whip up another low-information crowd into a lather... Doesn't take very much.. They just keep repeating the Koch-Rupe talking points and grinding their faces into the crowd, and it just keeps getting sillier and sillier... pimpin IS a good way to frame this cause Hoes are sure in the mix !!!
it's time we started calling all the gop and tea baggers-

stupid uneducated shit headed idiots
Beck: We are 12 hours away from fundamentally transforming the United States of America. [applause] And it has nothing to do with this city or politics! It has everything to do with God almighty!
Looks the same to me. Still the same old melting pot that was here yesterday and the day before, and the day before.
Palin? eh. pointless nonsense.
What is your conceptual, continuity?
If you need your "honor restored" by Glenn Beck(the President is a racist who hates white people) and Sara Palin(Obama pals around with terrorists) you are fucked up, and they can only fuck you up some more.
Leaving healthy babies to die in closets is a law Obama had/wanted passed? He said he knows because he's from Illinois? Well, here in CA Whitman's going to get a ton of votes - surely doesn't mean the people voting are intelligent.
I'm from Illinois and I don't know what the hell the man in the video is talking about.
We lost our honor when Jill Stanek made up endless bullshit about live babies being stuck in a closet to die?
This is utter bullshit.
The bill Obama got passed did NOT allow infanticide, which is what killing a child is. That's not legal anywhere, and never has been. The "Live Birth" bill was bullshit that duplicated laws already on the books and was just to try to make Democrats look heartless if they voted against it.
Jill Stanek's hospital was investigated, and nothing was found, but she still goes on and on about it. She's so insane and full of shit.
Hospitals have bereavement rooms for families whose babies die shortly after birth. She finds those rooms to be appalling and thinks they are just covering something up. She has no empathy for a family who wants their baby desperately, but that baby simply didn't form correctly and had no chance to survive.
Anyone who believes Jill Stanek is dumber than a stick. She even cheered on George Tiller's murder.
I believe only history can judge from afar. My guess? They will peg it to the date the first speed hump was installed in the name of traffic calming.

They wait for snippets of information, factoids, half-truths that confirm the vileness of their villains and assemble a damning body of evidence in their minds. We could nuke a country and it would be OK in their minds if the justification could be linked in some way to preserving the American Way, which of course is the sole property of the Tea Party ilk.
Are most Americans just stupid or just don't care what the true facts are? Is it that we elected a Black President because everyone was fed up with the Bush bullcrap but now all sudden no one remembers that Bush and his Cronies started us down this road of depression to begin with.
WOW, please tell Americans are stupid enough to vote the Repubs back in, in NOVEMBER???
That was quite a diatribe..........if someone can find the you-tube clip the guy referenced I would love to see it. I tried quite a few phrases in the search box without success. I suspect he received something in a viral email that he really believes.
I am so sick of the concerted effort to divide this nation--I have some born again conservative friends who believe everything hateful and negative they hear about Obama and this administration and then they send it on to their entire email list. I try educating them with articles from Fact Check.org but they only believe Beck. This has turned me away from organized religion like nothing else in my long life. If these people purport to be shining examples of Christianity, I could not be a part of it. And it saddens me to no end.
I take the letter, fill it with so many facts, that they can't read them all. I put so many in there, that they can't deny the truth. Then, I click on "reply all". I send it to every single one of them.

As a Canadian who does much business in the US (most of the components I use are manufactured there) one likes to keep politics out of business but a neutral question like "How about that Glen Beck?" will usually elicit a response that enables me to quickly and easily gauge the level of intelligence of the person I am dealing with. Works with Hannity too. I've tried to reverse this and use Olbermann but too often the answer is "Who?".

I noticed it's not discussed in the video what may have been physically wrong with these babies. The closest was that one baby had Downs Syndrome. Maybe it had other things wrong with it as possible with the other babies. A good friend once worked as a neo natal intensive care nurse. She constantly had to deal with babies who had problems such as most of their organs born outside their bodies and they couldn't have lived anyway. Things like that are the reasons for late term abortions. The babies couldn't possible survive anyway or they could never survive without unending life support equipment. People who are rabidly against abortion believe in protecting life no matter how miserable that life would be.
I also wonder how many rabidly prolifers have adopted children.
this was supposed to be a post in response to a link to a video about Obama's support of post birth abortions. don't know why it didn't show up under that guy's post.
Surely the recent great "dishonors" that some Americans must atone for was when they lied us into an unnecessary invasion of a sovereign country for purely political purposes leading to the unnecessary death of thousands of U.S. and ally troops and tens of thousands of innocent Iraqis, condoned torture, fought to the bloody death to prevent an effective economic stimulus bill to be passed, fought to the bloody death to prevent more Americans from being insured enough to see a doctor more than once a decade and fighting to the bloody death to prevent religious freedom being expressed where it has been legally designated to be expressed...
That must have been the "dishonor" that these fine Americans were asking other Americans to atone for...right?
The only way to restore it is to bring the war criminals and the war profiteers, in servie to whose interests the illegal wars of aggression were started im the first place, to justice. This of course will not happen. So we just add it to the national book of shame with our otherdishonorable , inhuman and evil acts that have characterized our entire history, like slavery, the genocide committed against the indian nations, the other wars that were instigated under false pretenses in order to further enrich the already wealthy...like Vietnam, the war against Mexico, all of the indian wars. Since our earliest days this country has been an epicenter of sociopathic injustice and cruelty, none of which has ever been adequately atoned for or even acknowledged.
There is practically zero chance that this nation will ever achieve to the state of being honorable.
It's never been necessary in the past when you've misplaced your collective honor. Whatever that is.

I live in Illinois. Obama is popular STATEWIDE. Those two rednecks just lied throughout that vid. They distort everything the President says. Just a couple of angry middle aged white men frustrated because they couldn't call Obama N****r and were told to keep their nasty racist placards at home.
I can't believe that a guy as bright as Obama thinks that there's an upside to working with(bipartisanship) abject hopeless cases like those two fools.

"I could give a flying crap about the political process.... We're an entertainment company."
- Glenn Beck - Forbes interview; April 26, 2010
Exactly when did America lose its honor? How did we lose it?
America lost its honor when:
*it elected and glorified a racist dolt as POTUS through the 1980's in the person of reagan
*it manufactured impeachment proceedings against Bill Clinton for a private matter having nothing to do with his duties as POTUS
* the SCOTUS intervened in a presidential election to select bush the lessor as the winner over Gore.
* it responded to 9/11 by invading a country that had nothing to do with 9/11
* torture o prisoners, indefinite detention, black sites, and illegal spying on Americans
there are many more dishonorable acts since the 1980's, all of which are tied to the republican party/conservative movement. There are also massively dishonorable acts prior to that such as the 10 million person strong genocide of native Americans and the use of nuclear weapons on two densely populated Japanese cities, incinerating hundreds of thousands and poisoning generations, the use of Agent Orange in Vietnam, the illegal use of depleted uranium munitions, the civil war, and on and on.
The real question is when has America acted honorably - it pales compared the to long history of dishonorable inhumanity, unwarranted aggression, and violence.
I'd say the tipping point was the Supreme Court decided to interfere in the 2000 Presidential election and put George W Bush in as President... Whatever honor America after Reagan and Gingrich was lost in the ensuing disaster.

This is very much the same fundamentalism that strongly influenced the so-called Great Awakening and American Revolution. It's the type of fundamentalism that theologian Roger Williams and his friend Isaac Backus were not in favor of, granted they were both spiritual men.
Whom and or what I believe is purposely stirring the global pot so-to-speak, is overwhelmingly influenced by "The Family". It's simply a "Jesus Plus Nothing" concept that is promoted each year. I find it unfortunate that the desires of our founders to keep church and state separate regardless of religions positive effects on society has failed, and I'll know for a fact when this case comes before the SCOTUS.

So there you have it. Barack Obama personally killed babies.
Are you misinformed or just covering up? The signs were taken away from them as a requirement of SOWF to make sure the rally was not political. So they want to restore America without the right to free speech.
They were not told it was not a political rally until they all got to Washington.

Is not this same theme Hitler used in the early 1930s to gain populist support? Restore honor to Germany? Honor our military? Its the "others" that are making us weak? I find the parallels a bit disconcerting. Hitler was a loser as well. A nobody who pushed lies that resonated with a distinct group of citizens and used them to crawl his way up to the top of the pile. Hitler held rallies and spoke of the need to restore Germany to greatness. I am not saying Beck is another Hitler, but...
...I'm glad to see that you're finally starting to understand why folks like me consider Beck profoundly disquieting (better late than never) -- but the fact is that some of us have been seeing this as a trend within the right-wing rhetoric for close to a decade now. With all due respect, what took you so long to see it????

Hey, Sarah, restoring the "principles" of the "Founding Fathers"?
So, you're promoting losing your right to vote, own property, etc.?
I had the misfortune to be on the DC metro with these predominantly white Southerners yesterday. A few thoughts:
(1) When you talk about "restoring" anything with respect to the South, the last thing I think of is honor. What I think of is the KKK, public lynchings, segregation, fire hoses, attack dogs, buses set on fire, and civil rights leaders jailed and/or beaten within an inch of their lives. I get the idea that the appeal of a rally entitled "Restoring Honor" is it promotes the idea that conservative whites in the Civil Rights era behaved with anything that could be called "honor" in the first place.
(2) On the metro, a man was trying to engage them, telling them that Beck was disrespecting the memory of Martin Luther King, Jr. by holding a rally on the anniversary of the "I Have a Dream" speech, that Beck was a bigot and a racist, that he'd called Obama a fascist, a socialist, and a Marxist, and had compared him to Hitler. The entire metro car of teabaggers, to drown him out, sang about 5 minutes' worth of "Amazing Grace", like African-American civil rights activists singing a spiritual to express solidarity against a common oppressor.
Which is the second reason old white conservatives are attending this rally. They genuinely would like us to believe that having their preferred candidate lose a presidential election is a form of oppression on par with what African-American people have experienced throughout history, and continue to experience today. This has the effect of treating discrimination against African-Americans as being entirely in the past ("WHITES are the ones being discriminated against now!"), and it downplays the horrific crimes committed against African-Americans by white Americans during the Civil Rights era and excuses them: "We may have oppressed them, but now see how they're oppressing us!"
(3) In a perverted way, I think that white Christian conservatives who thrive on playacting at being an embattled minority (even when they control all branches of the Federal Government) are jealous of people who actually have legitimate grievances in that vein, and the white Christian conservatives are using this rally to appropriate the experience of the same people who they have historically mistreated.
All this was truly disgusting, and it illustrates why "look forward, not backward" is maybe the most morally reprehensible and damaging of the Obama Administration's policies. The Smithsonian has a Holocaust museum. Why there is no slavery museum and no Civil Rights museum as well is beyond me. If there's anything white Americans need right now, particularly white Christian conservatives, it's a dose of history.
To these bigots that attended Beck's ego rally America lost it's honor when they let Obama move into the White House.
This one is easy - Palin would like to restore her own honor, and that of the Republican party.

For some insance reason, I feel like I have transported by to the 1960's. I am a 60 year-old black female that was raised in Memphis, Tennessee. When Martin Luther King came to Memphis in April of 1968 because of the unfair treatment of the Sanitation workers, I marked with him in downtown Memphis. I was also at the speech he made that night in one our Big Churches with standing room only and I had standing room only. Of course, we all know what happened after. But I am appauled, angry, totally enraged that Glen Beck and Sarah Palin would have the nerve to do something in name of Martin Luther King. It seems that every since the Teabaggers came out and Republicans supported their agenda, all of these white people that it is okay again to be openly racist and feel they say and do whatever to take us back in time. It's unbelieveable. They acting all brave and stuff with racism, trying the destroy immigrants or non-immigrants, oppose Muslim the right of their religion (Muslim Americans) put up racist sign garbage about our President and disrespect him in every way they can, where are the non-racist whites and why aren''t they throwing a fit or do we not have any of them anymore either.
These two backward white racist trash talkers are outrageous. I am very sure that King really is turning over in his Grave. Palin is most redneck, racist and hated "B>>>th" in this nation. And for GULLIBLE AMERICANS TO BE FALLING FOR THIS CRAP IS EMBARASSING.

The so-called "RELIGIOUS RIGHT", CONSERVATIVES, GOD FEARING PEOPLE, don't know one damn thing about the bible. They all out calling Obama a Socialist because he wants every American to be able to take advantage of American Dream and Share.
The biggest Socialist in history was Jesus Christ. IN Acts 2 and Matthew 6, said people came together , both rich and poor and the rich brought a lot of their possessions share to with everyone, especially the poor and needy. These wealthy and well-to-do Republicans are GREEDY and want to keep everything for themselves. They are giving Rush Limbaugh and Charles Manson, exactly what they wanted, "A RACE WAR". They also DO NOT WANT A MIDDLE CLASS. They want poor and rich, nothing in between and would be totally satisfied to see lower class people out of work, living on street and eating out soup kitchens like so many were during the 9 years of the 1930's depression. Just how sinful are these people? And nothing is worse the RIGHT WING Ministers and Evangelists, they are just as phony. Just about all of these TV Evangelists are personally worth Millions of Dollar and take money in their congregation from the poorest of people while they continue to get rich. It is no surprise that they support and are Republicans.
9th month abortion? What? Since when? You can only conduct such a procedure if the mother is about to die.
On the subject of abortion the Cons are hypocrites as they want the Gov't to stepped in and tell every woman who wants an abortion , to tell them no, that in turn means more Gov't...yet they say they want less gov't, Hypocrisy at it's worst.
But, it doesn't end there as they only want more Gov't while the fetus is in the womb, when the fetus becomes a born baby they then could case less and want no more Gov't. not caring if the baby is living in a safe place, well fed, loving parents and not in some children institution or foster care. No more Gov't to see if that baby is ok.
Even worst HYPOCRISY!

If this was about religious revivalism, you would thing they would talk at some point about their personal "journey to God". What is it that led them to their current state of belief (especially Beck who was an adult convert to Mormonism)? how exactly has their faith helped guide their lives?
Of course, they can't do this because all the evidence is that neither of them has any deep religious faith. If they did, they could not both have pursued careers that have depended at a fundamental level on the demonization of others.
So instead they limit themselves to a sort of generic moral smugness. "I am a Christian. All of you here are Christians. The Christianity of anyone who doesn't agree with us is suspect. Our superior Christian faith makes it both necessary and inevitable that our (unspecified at this time because this event is "non-political") agenda will prevail."
