Snoring Honor: Beck's big rally just a long-winded and boring sermon. And boy, was the crowd white.
Glenn Beck promised there wouldn't "be a dry eye in the house" after his big speech today at the Lincoln Memorial for his "Restoring Honor" rally -- because, you know, it was going to be "so stirring."
Riiiiight. Well, Glenn Beck's eyes certainly weren't dry. He started weeping while telling the crowd that somewhere out there was "the next George Washington".
Dunno about you, but when I saw pan shots of the crowd -- which was one of the whitest crowds in D.C. in recent memory -- I mostly thought I saw "the next Timothy McVeigh." But your mileage may vary.
As for the speech itself: Lunesta in verbal form. I'm having to pick my head up from my desk just to write something about it.
It was essentially Beck's call for a return to the religious life in America -- which was why he assembled 240 representatives of various churches in the crowd and dubbed them his "new Black Robe Regiment". This part was particularly creepy, since it came with an admonition that religious leaders needed to focus on "fundamental values" -- as defined by Glenn Beck, of course.
This means, naturally, that the "social justice" for which Martin Luther King fought -- and which Glenn Beck has vigorously condemned -- would not be part of those fundamental values.
As predicted, the whole show was a hoax -- a civil rights rally for easily frightened white people.
Oh, and what about those predictions of 100-200,000 people? This looked to me more in the 50-70,000 range for D.C. (We'll update when we get an official crowd estimate.)
Meanwhile, have fun recalling all the amazing things Beck predicted would come of this rally. Yeah, that was some historic turning point, all right.

I'm left wondering whether Beck doesn't just intend to break from his career on Fox, and instead pursue his life-long dream of being a faith healer.

What a horror. Talk about moslems in a sacred place like Ground Zero? What about Beck's racism in the place of Lincoln and MLK. Another Rightwing Republican travesty.
How long are Americans going to put up with this Stalinist thugery.

...those actually looking for a Mormon Tent Revival. But a very small percentage of those attending would have been looking for that.
Expect the crowd next year to be MUCH smaller. They were snookered into thinking this would be anti-Obama red meat, and it was a conversion meeting.
I think Glenn Beck was trying to "restore honor" to his reputation. He doesn't want to be seen as racist, so he's going full preacher. Good luck w dat.
The chairman of the NAACP said today that Martin Luther King didn't have to tell his audience to leave their racist signs and guns at home.
Beck's original plan was to use the rally to "introduce" and plug his upcoming book "The Plan", which is apparently a 100 year road map to American Theocracy. But was persuaded that the backlash for such a self-serving program would be so ferocious that he watered it down to his tepid "Restore Honor" theme.
in the crowd. One with his daughter on his shoulders so I guess that would be 2. The crowd didn't seem all that worked up until Palin came on. Other than that they looked mostly bored. They even looked pissed off when MLK's niece spoke because I think she said some stuff they didn't want to hear. They didn't look like they appreciated the black singers either. Just my opinion.
Yeah but they all had little orgasms when she talked about protecting marriage and fighting abortions.
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.
1. "...black singers..."
You know, because Beck totally isn't a racist! By the way, why would they take that job??
2. "...protecting marriage and fighting abortions."

I watched the whole damned thing and did not see one miracle. I demand my money back and three hours of my life I also can never get back.
He said everything about a dozen times over and over so you would think I would have got this, but I didn't. Did he say on the east side of the washington memorial at the top it said "Praise be to god"? If that is what he said, I'm surprised he didn't find that some Muslim had put the message there facing the east for a reason. Any other time he would have, you just know it.
I have to admit I did laugh at some of the clothes the fine folks were wearing.

Wow, you are a glutton for punishment. I couldn't even make it through this clip. He's a terrible speaker and boring as hell. Pure tripe.

POP Thank you for watching so I wouldn't have to. I have to watch my blood pressure and I know it would have gone through the roof. Thanks again.
I was so sure Beck had paid someone to "martyr" him at the rally and blame it on the liberals. Well, maybe next time.
That crossed my mind too. Did anyone else see what appeared to be a bullet proof vest under his shirt? It was especially obvious when he turned to his side.
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.
Did Beck expect one of the gun worshipers in his crowd to shoot him? That would never happen. Beck isn't black enough.
Who would waste their f***king time and bullets to shoot this sack of shit? Yes, the economy is bad, but assassins are smart enough to know a good opportunity. Glenn Beck is NOT such an opportunity.
That's what we Utah Gentiles used to call the tell-tale outlines of an LDS person's sacred garments. Jesus' General called it like he saw it and I think he's right; Beck was probably wearing a T-shirt over his undergarments and under his dress shirt to make it a little less obvious (there are little appliqued doo-dads over the manboobal area).
My husband is always highly amused that, as a non-practising, orthodox agnostic Jewish guy, he gets to be a Gentile in Utah when we're there visiting family.
So, how did everybody like the Campchair Revival Meeting? I'm sure the Rapture-Revolution is busting out all over the country...
GinnyRED57, a few weeks ago I had a long conversation with someone who used to be a Mormon but left that religion when she became of age. One thing this lady said was that all of the hateful things Beck says on his tv show are the very same things she had heard all of her life from the leaders of the Mormon church growing up. She said that they used lesser racist language that Beck uses but that the basic message was the same. This is why no one in the Mormon church or any of its' followers ever publicly criticizes Beck.
Since you live in Utah have you heard of this or anything similar?
I should have stayed in Cozumel for another day of
drinkingdiving. One of the speakers telling a bible story actually said: "...she was not a Jew. She was like you and I, she was a gentile..."
You and I? Translation=the REAL Americans.
Did she really say that? That is so offensive.
it was a man, one of the older men he gave one of his medals to.
He was one of the few speakers I saw.....an older black Baptist minister from I think Houston. I heard him thank "Glenn" a few times.
I saw someone on another blog today make a sarcastic comment about this being an anti-semite rally.
Now, this is the 2nd piece of evidence that this might be an anti-semite rally (saying this sarcastically, of course.)......
Beck claimed that he did not know about the date of MLK's "I have a Dream" speech. He claimed that another date he looked at was September 12th, but he decided against it because that was the Sabbath. He didn't want to have people come to his event on the Sabbath.
Well, today is Saturday. The "Sabbath" for those in the Jewish faith is Saturday. Maybe beck and his followers have something against Jews!
Be Gentile with me; it's my first time.
Study the symptoms not the virus...
Apparently, if you were a serviceman that isn't christian, Beck's rally wasn't about you. I thought the rally was supposed to be about celebrating the people of the armed forces....I didn't see that. All I saw was self righteous sermonizing
To be fair, I finally checked out a (new) Beck program (today)...
He asks his audience,
"How many of you believe the Soviet Union was a failed state?"
Nobody raised their hands
"How many of you believe the Soviet Union just couldn't sustain its economy?"
Maybe 1 guy raised his hand
"How many of you believe the Soviet Union was EVIL?"
Nearly everyone raised their hands and clearly this was the 'right' answer by Beck - he then went on a tangent on Putin and how he is EVIL and demonic, and drumming up tired 1950 'anti-communist' rhetoric
Oh, brother... His show was a lamesauce attempt at being a 'lecture' with a bunch of dopey kids as the audience. He is preying upon the ignorance of people, while appealing to their insecurity (of intelligence) by framing it as a position of 'enlightened' education. The rest of the program is about disqualifying "separation of church and state" and the assertion that America is supposed to be a christian nation.
Gawd, just puddings of stupid...I see where he is going with this schtick.
"How many of you believe the Soviet Union was EVIL?"
Classic dog whistle. Beck never disappoints.

"Has this man EVER said ANYTHING I disagree with?" The answer will be no. Then, I wish they'd ask themselves, "At umpteen million dollars a year, WOULD this man ever say anything I disagree with?" The answer is hell no. And, then, please God, they could ask themselves this: "If he weren't getting paid umpteen mill a year, would this man be saying anything at all to me?" And the answer is?
I guess we all know now who this Messiah is that they
have been screaming about the last two years.
When I see Beck nailed to a cross. Then I will know that he is the new Messiah. Otherwise, Beck is just a wannabe.
I have been an intermittently studious observer of the GB phenomenon the last six months or so, including one midnight a month or two ago when I stood staring at the kitchen TV for a half hour, mesmerized by Beck's messianic rant, when it hit me: This man is deadly serious in his megalomania, it's not just an act.
Watching this clip and others today of Beck's performance in DC removes all doubt from my mind: He is on a mission from (the) God (in his mind). Perhaps he believes he is Glenn the Baptist, as when he tearfully invoked that 'the next George Washington' be in the crowd, perhaps an 8 year old child who would in 25 years bring 'a new dream' to the steps where MLK proclaimed his dream (at about the 8:20 mark of the clip).
I believe this speech caught most of the attendees, and more importantly perhaps, 'the TV audience at home', off guard. In the world of his own making - where, for example, the 200 preachers behind him represent 'one hundred and eighty million people,' all of whom, no doubt, are fervent supporters of the anointed one - I believe Beck hugely overestimates the size of his flock.
And when the people who came hoping to see tea party-style Obama bashing, plus those who in good faith felt this event had something to do with scholarships for war orphans, instead see that their good intentions toward their erstwhile hero - and their donations to a charitable cause - were subverted into a blatant and egregious attempt to convert them to his religious cause, I believe many if not most will feel conned and betrayed, or at the least, greatly disappointed and deflated.
Whatever Glenn may have hoped to see in the wake of this event, I fully expect the media to have a field day with how this man exposed himself today to be nothing more than a glorified, bat shit crazy Jimmy Swaggart.
- Fel
It was just a religious republican pep ralley and Beck was the captain of the team. After that performance today is there any doubt that he aspires to become an evangelical minister on some cable channel?
When the lady spoke for the man who won the charity award and quoted the man as saying Beck was the most trusted citizen, I about laughed out loud and the crowd cheered.
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.
I think the relative civility of this rally is something Beck can now use to defend himself in the future. More specifically he'll use it to defend himself the next time he says something outrageous. I feel conflicted because I'm glad to see it was as tame and boring as it was. But it's going to be cited for political reasons now.
Also, come on. Who cares if it's mostly white people. That's stating the obvious. Is that bad? Is it good? Does that mean they didn't include people of color? Or people of color chose not to attend? There's no real way to judge that. Everyone was invited. Beck clearly attracts white audiences though. So be it.
Yes, there is. This being the anniversary of the MLK speech and all...
Sorry us white folk in this country need to learn that sometimes we can't have everything both ways and that we need to what's best to prevent a fly to enter our mouths: STFU.
CTHULHU 2012 "Why vote for a lesser evil?"
It does matter that it was mostly white people and that Beck attracts mostly white people, because at present blacks and others with dark skin are being targeted for racial profiling and imprisonment at disproportionate levels relative to whites, and not because they commit more crimes - they don't - but because many law enforcement officials and others in positions of power are white and prejudiced against them. That's why it's good to be suspicious when you see that a political movement consists almost entirely of white people. And it doesn't matter if this group does have a few people of color represented, as they likely do, because right-wing groups like this overwhelmingly promote policies and behaviors that are disadvantageous, to put it mildly, to people of color and that fact cannot be negated by the presence of a few representatives of the disadvantaged groups. Did the fact that a few blacks were overseers for their white masters mean that race wasn't a factor in white enslavement of blacks?
There's lots of reasons to be suspicious of Beck however I don't feel comfortable with the line of argument suggesting that the presence of lots of white people is reason alone to be suspicious. That's a risky line of argument don't you think?
That wasn't civility. That was comatose from boredom.
I feel the exact same way about beck using this event to defend himself. He'll say that teapartiers are not racist because they clapped for and cheered for the black speakers who were there. He will say they are not violent people because the event was calm today.
Yet I'll bet money that beck will soon say something so utterly outrageous that it will surpass even his past remarks about killing people, feeding poison to Nancy Pelosi, calling a woman to talk about her miscarriage.....the man is a shyster, a charlatan, who speaks out both sides of his mouth.
Civility or trying so hard not to fall asleep they were zombified.
Mostly white people indicates his appeal is to white Xtians only. That's nothing new. Tacitly, he is speaking of rights for white Xtians and everyone knows it.

It's still frightening that so many people turned out, especially when large progressive demonstrations in recent years haven't received any coverage at all, regardless of size.
I recently did a very unscientific survey of the current right-or-lefter political tendencies of high school classmates from my early 1980s Dallas high school, basing it on the information they choose to show on their public Facebook page. Of 80 people, only four had anything even remotely Democrat-leaning or liberal on display, forty percent were extreme right-wing (members of Sarah Palin, Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Heritage Foundation, everyone-must-be-Christian, wish-Obama-were-dead fan groups, etc.), and the rest gave no indication one way or the other. It sickened me but didn't surprise me, since these are white Texans and all.
It is scary to see this stuff being made popular on a national level via the promotion of right-wing ideas and events and the suppression and ignoring of progressive ideas and events. A very right-wing country is being created.
The question is how many less people would be in the crowd if every television news program ,newspaper, radio program and blog on the Internet had not advertised it ?
I watched a lot of Fox and Friends this morning to see if they were going to talk about Beck's shindig today and not once while I was watching did they mention it. Of course CNN was talking about it a lot this morning.
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.
I do have to hand it to beck. He got all of the publicity he could ever hope for. I can't believe the coverage CNN and other outlets gave to it.
I wonder why Fox News and others has not covered CNN's Heroes event? I wonder why Fox News and others have not covered the health fairs Keith Olbermann and MSNBC have sponsored, including one this weekend in New Orleans?
The hypocrisy is overwhelming on this subject, I was thinking the same thing. What's the matter? This is the liberal media that they're constantly making fun of. The Lamestream Media. I'm nothing but disgusted to see every media outlet hang on his words like sniveling dogs.
In their defense, though, you know what you see when you go to those other events? People acting civilized. Helping eachother. Talking about their experiences in the war while people intently listen. Yaawn.
When you go to a tea-party or Glenn Beck rally, you're gonna see a lot of crazy white people, crying, frothing, or holding up crazy signs, or carrying exposed firearms. One of them is more apt to do something entertaining, and therefore, newsworthy.
Well, MLK had an estimated crowd of 250,000.

I bet there are a lot of St Louis Cardinals' fans who might be a little pissed after watching this today.

I wasn't so much pissed off as I was very disappointed and sad. I have sent Albert Pujols 2 emails through his foundation web site expressing my disapproval of beck. I was very "kind" in my emails and didn't call beck any names, but I did point out the hateful and hurtful rhetoric beck has spewed over the years.
I said I only hoped that Tony La Russa and Albert Pujols can get beck to stop with his hateful and divisive speech.
Yeah, that is, to say the least, creepy. I had suspicions that this little rally was no more to give himself some credibility and to bolster his public image. But with a statement like that, one might think he is trying to start some sort of personality cult. The man isn't right in his head and there a people out there who take everything he says seriously. I just hope the authorities are watching him very, very closely. The scary thing about crazy people is that they think they are just fine, it's everyone else that's crazy.
I don't care what these people who support this teaparty thingy say. They are just a bunch of rich white folks who are afraid they are going to loose influence over the two ruling political parties and are pissed off because there is a black family living in the White House. Plus these rich folks may well have to start paying their fair share of taxes for a change.

DC Tea Party Rally Sparks Racial Controversy
The D.C. 'Restoring Honor' rally held today by Fox News pundit Glenn Beck has stirred up controversy with its timing. The biggest cause of contention: holding it at the Lincoln Memorial on the Anniversary of Martin Luther King's 'I Have a Dream' speech. http://www.newslook.com/videos/245499-dc-tea-...
The word lemmings comes to mind while watching the rally. (of the white variety) from the urban dictionary.
1 A member of a crowd with no originality or voice of his own. One who speaks or repeats only what he has been told.
2. A small, short-tailed rodent which lives in the tundra. It is said that large groups of these animals come together every so often to jump off of a cliff. On the contrary, they fall off quite by accident. It is also said that Disney filmed them doing this by moving them to unfamiliar territory.
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?ter...
that Beck was alluding to the martinet who intends to lead America in revolution?
Really the compleat lameness of this event is no surprise, there was no way it was going to live up to the hype Becky made about it. And yet the mindless zombies that follow his every word will probably get with the script and proclaim it the greatest civic rally of all time.
Oh yeah, most of the crowd was white, now there's a shock.
I really dont think that conservatards really care about getting the black vote anymore, they realize that we mostly see through their bull and so they've moved from trying to get us to vote for them, to amping up white stereotypes of the poor foolish blacks being easily fooled by the evil (and racist) liberals who are out to keep a brother down. This race-baiting is ment to stroke the egos of the Archie Bunker crowds.

I'm watching the other rally that was held today on c-span. Sadly there are very few white faces there. It's sad to me that these two groups are basically segregated today of all days. If Beck were not an idiot he would have worked together with Sharpton and brought both groups together to unite and remember MlK's speech as one people. Now that would have been an event to remember and take pride in for so many reasons.
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.
I attended the Al Sharpton rally and would estimate that the crowd was roughly 95% black, 2.5% white, and 2.5% Latino. That was kind of disappointing. Some of the speeches were truly stirring, but the entire affair lacked a truly united front between blacks and whites. I think that is due in part to the fact that the white liberal "movement" isn't much of a movement at all. There is very little national infrastructure and there was little, if any, organized effort to bring out white folks.
Churches, black organizations, and unions teamed up to bus in black folks from across the country; entire busloads of people from Georgia, and Alabama, and Illinois, etc. My impression was that the white attendees were primarily locals (like myself).
That being said, I thoroughly enjoyed myself.
[Also, it was amusing to hear the Tea Party folks estimate the attendance numbers on my Metro ride back home. I overheard one guy say, "You know, I definitely think there were 100,000 people there, but I think it may have been closer to a million." Um, if you say so.]
Pissed off Patricia: White people and people of every race, color and creed were a part of the civil rights movement. If few white people chose not to attend the real rally honoring the MLK speech it was not because they were not welcomed. I don't know why more did not attend.

Building on a previous post....this is not really about explicit "racism", it's more about a form of cultural and historical "nativism". These are essentially people who are dreaming of returning the country to some kind of nirvanha that they associate with some vague time in the past. Whether that's an America dominated and controled by essentially white Christian values, I don't know, but
it certainly is a component. The troubling thing for me concerning race is just how virulent and vitriolic were the concerted right-wing attacks on Obama beginning in the campaign and accuatly
intensifying the day of his Inauguration. Working so hard and so loudly and so viciously to cause America's first black president to fail might just be typical right-wing politics (since we saw the same tactics used against Clinton), but it can't help but be seen in part through the prism of
a scenario where our first black President will be labeled "a faillure" by those on the other side.
The absence of minorities and young people at these rallies is reassuring. Whereas the tea partiers are trying to "restore" the past, the ever emerging demographic majority in this country
continue to look forward. Unfortunately, I fear too many of them won't show up to vote this November.
And yes, fortunately this isn't Italy in the 20s or Germany in the 30s, because the populist anger/economic recession dynamic is the same. Which drove the fascists to power.
Yes, it was laughable, wasn't it? Kinda cheeky. Silly and maybe pathetic? But there Beck was, with his tears, in all his campiness .... getting his message out ... TO EVERYONE!
And .. everyone listened. Deny all you want but with the coverage this clown got, Beck is a hit!!
Doesn't matter if it was 1 or 100,000 - each one teach one and 1 is all it took. Beck himself. Guess what, eventhough the majority was white folk (like that mattered) at an MLK event, white people have money and they buy votes! And they show up to these things ... and we progressives, liberals and the sane, laugh and poke fun at how stupid is, "IN" and Main Stream Media (and net media) covers the new "stupid," .. and we laugh and pretend this is going nowhere ... and they fund each other and Palin gets more coverage (and $) ... and we laugh in blogs ... Riiight, David?
And then ... SURPRISE, SURPRISE they start moving up in the polls and we still laugh (like this isn't happening) and get cheeky at their silly rallies ... And they get noticed and continue to mobilize, and they get more coverage and oops, they start winning primaries and soon ... we're not laughing. I know I'm not.
Where were the counter protesters at this Beck fuck fest? (Shaprton doesn't count) I mean real people with a counter voice? The progressive counter movement. The pro war counter protesters were en-mass when IYFR covered and protested the war in '03, '04, '05, '06, '07, '08. The Counters got more MSM coverage than we did.
I'm not laughing. Beck, with all his campiness, scored big and we did nothing but laugh and that won't stop him.

Does it matter when I signed up? What a red herring. Did you get the message? When I signed up is so NOT the point.
No. That you think this is the start of your "revolution" shows how naive and delusional you are. Lots of fools have fallen for the snake oil of charlatans like Beck, who needs mental health professionals for his dementia and schizophrenia.
You "scored big" all right---with easily frightened white people. Nice win you got there.

Yes, let's continue to pretend this doesn't matter. Just like we did in 2004 when we believed the country was on to the Bush/Cheney crime family. Good job.
So you think showing up would make a difference? How do you think the media would cover that? As his sermon was mostly religious, it would be spun as un-American god-haters causing trouble. These simple-minded ideologues have already made up their self-righteous intolerant minds and there's no changing that because they feel it is god's will.

Brilliant suggestion In your Face. Because it doesn't, except to the egotistic chest thumpers that want to feel important and powerful. Your "movement" has all the class and style of a bowel movement.

Let's pretend Palin doesn't have influence on anything (especially in this last primary in Alaska) AND
Let's pretend Beck & Jabba The Rush and Billo and FOX don't either AND
Let's pretend who they endorse has no bearing on politics what so ever AND
Let's pretend MSM doesn't cover them to the point of vomiting to keep their populist movement alive, kicking and well funded AND
Let's pretend Murkowski would be the seventh incumbent - and fourth Republican - to lose in a year in which the tea baggin tea party has scored huge victories AND
Let's pretend as of August 24 batshit crazy Bachmann isn't leading the better candidate Tarryl Clark in the polls in the 6th district in Minnesota AND
Let's pretend the RNC isn't pouring TONS - O - $$ into the 6th to keep batshit Neo Nazi Bachmann in Congress (just to make us crazy) AND
Let's pretend my candidate of choice Boxer, and the Dems, are only fighting for their political lives because of MY EGOTISTIC CHEST BEATING

I would say it's less likely to be schitzophrenia and more likely paranoia mixed with bi-polarism and Elmer Gantrism.
These people don't go away no matter what, at one time they would've been the Moral Majority, so the trick is to continuously demonstrate that they're a noisy minority:
“Because half a dozen grasshoppers under a fern make the field ring with their importunate chink, whilst thousands of great cattle chew the cud and are silent, pray do not imagine that those who make the noise are the only inhabitants of the field; that, of course, they are many in number; or that, after all, they are other than the little, shriveled, meagre, hopping, though loud and troublesome insects of the hour.”
Funny thing when Edmund Burke compared the English public to cattle, is that suggests ultimately, they'll end up on someone's dinner plate
Kind of like the sheep of the Good Shepherd.
Diabolus est Deus Inversus
Well, that's religion for ya. Misreading the Good Book so it suits their own purpose.
Ever notice how Abel, David and J.C. are all depicted as shepherds? Abel's the important one: He was killed by a farmer. He represented the old way of life, pastoralism. He lived on what God supplied him. There's a tie in to the Miracle of the Loaves and Fishes there, too. Think about it.
Don't try to confuse the issue with half-truths and gorilla dust.
It's not that you signed up today, it's that you are here, commenting, rather than there, protesting.
Don't try to confuse the issue with half-truths and gorilla dust.
I see Ysb needs someone to explain his/her comments. Whatever. Hey, I put in my time protesting and giving progressives a voice that is now drowning from the likes of Beck. From at least '92 (when half the damn country was sucking their thumbs) till now.
Ysb's issue that I signed up today, period. What a waste of time. However, ysb STILL has not addressed the issue. Beck is being heard - and heavily funded - and that can be dangerous, if we ignore it. But let's pretend I'm the problem.
You know I've been on this site for years. Met John. Have his book and the first time I post a concern that Beck's popularity should not be taken lightly, I, not my comments, am judged by my own people. Unreal. Now defend your position so we can keep this silly nonsense alive instead of looking at the real problem - Beck.
John - what's the deal here?
...that this isn;t happening at all? Sorry.
Beck gets beaucoups bucks from Murdoch not just because Beck makes the noises Murdoch wants to hear, but because he draws like-minded viewers to Faux News, and those viewers draw advertisers, many of them like-minded (btw, the thing about watching this at a site like C&L is that the advertising element, and thus the money, is out of the picture).
The best way to blow Beck and his ilk out of the water is to shell him with the truth- but first you have to know what in the hell lies they're telling.
Don't try to confuse the issue with half-truths and gorilla dust.
... that's the point. They are making noise, headway and a ton of money.
Here's what I noticed. In less then 2 years we've lost credibility for no reason. None. The 111th Congress and Obama have accomplished a near miracle in many areas (given the numbers in the Senate) - and yet - the positive is lost in the increased negative getting more air play. That worries me for 2 reasons. They still have too much money to throw at MSM to get out their propaganda and there are a barrage of pluses going unheralded by MSM.
While I still don't agree with Obama on Afghanistan, I knew his game going into the election and I trust him more than any Republican -ever!
Gibbs hammering progressives in the media was scary when we need unity.
To your point of exposing Beck's lies .. we tend to forget them cause there's so many (Like GW) - but here's one I will never forget living in California ...
“I think there is a handful of people who hate America. Unfortunately for them, a lot of them are losing their homes in a forest fire today.” –on why people who lost their homes in forest fires in California had it coming,
“The Glenn Beck Program,” Oct. 22, 2007
And for that alone, he should rot in hell.
But if the choice is between a counter-protest or motivating progressives via the internet to vote, I'm going with the latter. I've been an observer at Klan parade that was counter-protested by the Socialist Workers Party (Lansing, MI, fall of 1983) where things got violent, and that was a much smaller scale event than this. If it's going to come down to violence- and it very well may- let it be clear that it's the Teabaggers who started it. Don't let them claim they were provoked by "SEIU thugs". Kick their fucking asses at the polls and take it from there, I say.
Don't try to confuse the issue with half-truths and gorilla dust.
And no ... I was editing a progressive net radio show. What were you contributing to making your voice heard, watching when I joined a blog? Lovely. But thank you. You made my point beautifully.
You think our voices don't get heard. This blog has had almost 400,000,000 hits. People read it.

I only saw a few moments of this beckfest. I'm really glad I did not see beck himself, crying again. I wonder if he owns stock in Vicks Vapor Rub?
Out of the few speakers I saw, every one of them thanked "Glenn." This was all about "Glenn."
I've traded comments with a number of conservatives on other (conservative) blogs these past couple of days. It is truly amazing the worship they have of this charlatan. It is truly amazing how much they totally ignore his hate speech over the years. I have asked a number of times if they approve of beck calling up that woman many years ago and asking her about her miscarriage on his radio show, stating that her husband couldn't do anything right....he couldn't even have a baby. I've asked a number of times if they approve of beck talking about killing people like Michael Moore and Nancy Pelosi. I have not received a single response as far as I know. They choose to ignore the hate this man has wrought.
beck will now use this fest to prove that he and teabaggers are not racist; he will use it to prove he is a good guy; and I am sure he will claim that he has truly reclaimed the civil rights' movement.
What a sad, sad man this is.
Free bus rides and lunch...talk about socialism. If these numb-nut white people actually had to pay for their own transportation and food (in other words, make a personal sacrifice) none of them would have shown.

http://www.bibleprophesy.org/heretics.htm
...you're not the only one who's had thoughts like that over the past couple of days, and especially not after hearing about how Saudi prince Alwaleed bin Talal (the second-biggest shareholder in News Corp, parent company of FOX News) appears to be playing both sides against the middle by not only helping to bankroll FOX News but also reportedly funding Islamic madrassas around the world. It has occurred to me that if the reports are true -- and especially if bin Talal also has ties to the U.S. military industrial complex -- then there could be something very insidious of Machiavellian or even Orwellian proportions going on.
Think about it. If bin Talal is providing material support to the kind of madrassas which condone or even encourage the use of violence in the name of Islam while at the same time providing support to News Corp -- which, in the form of FOX News, stirs up fear and paranoia concerning Islam -- then if he also has ties to the American military industrial complex (which some people claim he has), would it be all that impossible for him to use this deliberately in an effort to bring about the kind of hard-line militaristic American foreign policy which actually encourages Muslims to become radicalized, thus creating a circular and self-sustaining system? Personally, I'm not at all certain that this would be impossible -- especially since it would have the potential to be lucrative for the Prince if he did indeed have ties to the MIC. If you ask me, machinations such as that would qualify as the actions of an actively evil individual...

You know what it really sounds like? Every single one of Beck's other speeches. Just, you know, this time, heavily advertised and hyped.
Which means the Glenn Beck with God using him as an avatar (as advertised on his radio show), doesn't sound that much different from non-divine Glenn Beck.
Yeah yeah yeah! The usual lib bullshit made up lies about the supposed crowd guesses of course to try and make it look like it was not well attended.
Sorry libs but the truth is he exceeded the estimates. I was there. Were you?
No. I stopped going to circuses when I turned 18 and enlisted in the Navy. This 'event' was nothing but a self-promotion tour for Lil' Becky. Wonder how many real vets were there, and how many 'keyboard kommandos'?
How about you, sunshine? Did your tour already? What command were you assigned to? Or did you just sign up today to vomit on our screens?

Here's the deal Obamasucks. Crowd numbers show up at a circus only this freak show was free. Beck is little fat dog and pony show (sorta like a circus sideshow) that panders to the least intelligent. (Two headed snake are cool. You know the type) I agree dumb and stupid is "IN" and are on the march like a bunch of Germans were a few years back. Palin, on the other hand, is just a pig with lipstick. Now, just because the stuck on stupid fund them, doesn't mean they have value.
Why on earth would I go there? I'm sorry but I don't have time to waste on charlatans, who, by the way, are terrible speakers pimped by propaganda outlets like Fux. Beck is a Fux media creation: there is nothing real about him.
People that pay heed to these false experts, like beck and palin, are everything that is wrong with America. It's why you are hated worldwide. We wonder just how stupid and hateful America is going to get, and there's no end in sight.
far left loon >.<
If Beck wanted to stage a religious revival, why didn't he just say so? And why hold it today instead on a holy day, like Easter or something?
I'm being coy. I know very well why he held it this ode to piety, Eric Degams of the St. Petersburg Times explains it very well. Linking one's cause to a well-respected idea (MLK's famous speech) is Propaganda 101 stuff, and he's gotten away with it. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/eric-deggans/th...
It was clear from his continual linking of our founding fathers with some some supposedly religious intent (dubious at best, according to most reputable historians), that Beck and his financiers want to take this country back to the kind of theocratic rule we had prior to the d rafting of the Constitution, the very thing the founding fathers hoped to end forever. And this should make us very very afraid, especially in view of Linda Greenhouse's recent speculation about the Supreme Court's upcoming ruling on Ten Commandments displays. http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/08/...
How fascinating that Beck used most of his speech to argue for a "return" to Christian principles. I didn't count how many times he used the words God, Moses, Jesus, prayer and Commandments, but it seemed like every word was religious..
Contrast this with the words of MLK, a Baptist minister in "I Have a Dream." He said God a total of four times, and Lord, pray and faith once each. True, there were several Biblical allusions, specifically from Psalm 30.5 as well as Isaiah and Amos, and one could say the overall theme of the speech harkens to Exodus and the Hebrews' escape from bondage. But these were indirect and artfully threaded references used to make his larger point about the greatness of our country.
So we had a very religious, well-educated master of language giving us an essentially secular speech. It was a lesson in civics, and in the heroism and wisdom of our nation's heritage, and it was so brilliantly written and presented it really will be inspiring people for generations.
And now we have a bombastic, egotistical college-dropout (pious Mormon tho he is), doing his best Jim Baker imitation, cliches and all, calling on Americans to follow God's will (just like Abe and George!) which he thinks he knows all about. This guy is a real piece of work.

The point of Godwin's law was to stop people from calling each other Nazis when they were arguing about kernel hacks and VHS v. Beta. It wasn't supposed to rule out talking about Nazis when you're talking about Nazis.

It was a huge crowd, no doubt, check out this view from above:

But it is a deceiving view, because the crowd was not exactly "shoulder to shoulder". Here's what it looked like inside the crowd:

as you can see, All those white people were pretty spread out, with their camp chairs and blankets. White people need plenty of personal space even when taking back America.
However the Beckoning was NOT a white only event. They hired a number of brown people to perform for the audience, and Fox News was absolutely awesome in its coverage - nearly all of their pundits, commentators and correspondents reporting on the rally were black. Diversity!
Addenda: The event organizers are claiming 500k, NBC and USA Today are saying 300k. I doubt it, not with the way the crowd was spaced out.
...the crowd at Dr. King's speech. Check these out:

That crowd was estimated at 200k, and there isn't any evidence of chairs and coolers in the shots. There's no way Beck's crowd was even close to 200k.

I think I want that 9-10 mins. of my life back after hearing Beck speak drivel on religion in America.
I wonder if Beck never heard that Thomas Jefferson indicated that America wasn't found on Christianity or any other religion. But, these right-wingers must be anticipating that getting God to start "the 2nd coming" will trump the 1st amendment of freedom of religion.
All in all, Beck sounded like a special ed HS student giving a driveled speech. What are he and his trolls really fighting for?? In reality, it's not socialism, and here's why, contrary to their wishful thinking on what they infer they're fighting against: http://www.truth-out.org/nine-myths-about-soc....

Well I know that since I started commenting on the DMN blog I've managed to knock away one conservative commenter who used to live there, by inviting such vitriol, I think he was kicked off the site for being abusive.
I don't know if this is a plus or minus, but people no longer comment or rate my comments on the site, I think because they don't understand them. color of Beck's crowd, it's significant because in Beck's and the Tea Party's case, when you have a crowd that is almost exclusively older and white, you can just smell the reeking of Beck/Tea Party's hostility and bigotry towards people of color and other minority groups, and you know that their rhetoric is found by people of color to be hateful, a dealbreaker, and so we don't want to go near Beck and the Tea Party with a 50 foot pole.
I.E., the crowd is almost exclusively white because Beck and the Tea Party are offensive to virtually everyone else in the country.
