I've been watching Ted Kennedy since I was a kid and have many memories of him giving speeches -- some great, some not so great. But my favorites may have been his speech at the Democratic National Convention in Denver last summer, even when we knew he was dying of brain cancer.

I especially remember these lines:

For me this is a season of hope -- new hope for a justice and fair prosperity for the many, and not just for the few -- new hope.

And this is the cause of my life -- new hope that we will break the old gridlock and guarantee that every American -- north, south, east, west, young, old -- will have decent, quality health care as a fundamental right and not a privilege.

It's sad that he didn't live to see a health-care reform bill finally pass. In his memory, in honor of his service, and in the name of everything he stood for, we need to pass it more than ever.

we knew it was comin, but it still hurts...you will be sorely missed...there will never be another quite like you.

yes, our nation has lost a great leader. you're passion will be missed. rip sen. kennedy

Like Moses, Teddy got us to the edge of the promised land, but was called home rather than being allowed to cross into it. After a shaky start, he grew into his role, but he always cared about the little guy, even though he was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. RIP, Teddy, I'm sorry you are gone.

...before the Right blames Kennedy's death on his "government healthcare"?

Blame Kennedy's absence on their unwillingness to negotiate in good faith, as if his presence might magically change their allegiance to the insurance industry.

anything coming out of the Senate knuckle draggers would be an embarrassment to his memory!

Call the idiots and tell them if they try to pawn off a HC corporate supporting bill in his name that the Devil/ and the American people will get their revenge in 2010!

1.800.828.0498 or 1.866.220.0044

Shameless- weak and stupid!

I wonder if when Laura Pickles Bush passes doughy pantload Erik Erikson will bring up Mike Douglas the boyfriend Laura Pickles Bush killed? http://www.redstate.com/erick/2009/08/26/ted-...
Not to mention the hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilian men, women and children along with the 4500 Americans Bush killed in a trumped up lie based war.

May Mike Douglas and those Iraqis and American soldiers rest in peace also Erikson.

My local TV "news" program this morning ran this part of Kennedy's speech last year and then went on for about 5 minutes talking about Mary Jo.

Douchebags, the lot of them.

............senator! Rest in Peace, you fought bravely when no one else seemed to notice the junta by the elephant in the room.

In its present form, I do not think Ted Kennedy, the Lion of the Senate would really like this so-called "health-care reform" bill which is a joke.

Fot healthcare to be Ted Kennedy's "legacy" the public option and single payer must be in it. Kennedy, the Real Liberal would not have liked all the giveaways to the corporate whores.

May Ted Kennedy R.I.P. Forever.....

which is a failure.

In his speech he said, "guarantee that every American -- north, south, east, west, young, old -- will have decent, quality health care as a fundamental right and not a privilege."

This sounds like Conyers/Weiner H.R. 676 (Amendment to H.R. 3200) to me.

My sympathies to the Kennedy family for their loss.

I hope that his passing will result in the drafting of a Progressive candidate to run for his seat. I'd like to see a candidate who will tell the truth about what an abysmal failure the Mass Plan is down here in the grass roots of Massachusetts. And I'd like to see a candidate who will fight for "Medicare for All" Single Payer Health Reform that will kick the for-profit health insurance corporations to the curb where they belong and that will come as close as we can to nationalizing the pharmaceutical industry.

We NEED these medications to live. Our tax dollars subsidize billions of dollars of R&D for big pharma. Where is the break then that the taxpayers deserve?

The best that can come from Kennedy's passing is that he is replaced by a Senator who is MORE Progressive than he was.

I'm among those MA citizens who can't afford health insurance, yet get stuck with a fine as punishment because i'm poor...

The MA health care plan is a raging success....for the private health care companies...

A progressive candidate to replace Kennedy would be welcomed, someone similar to Howard Dean, if such a erson exists....
A pity that Joe Kennedy jr left politics...

The problem is that American politics- in both parties-are dominated by right wing and ULTRA right wing people- so a truely progressive (i.e liberal) candidate would quickly find themselves marginalized and ignored be their peers.

Here Lies A Healthcare Consumer Who Voted For The Wrong Policy.

Queue the Chappaquiddick footage. Teddy won't be cold in his honoured grave before the conservative scum crank up their slur machine.

59 votes until next year. So much for single-payer. At least those of who die in the next year or so will know it wasn't Teddy's fault.
.

Throw this in the face of any wingnut Dittofuck who brings up Chappaquiddick
http://www.bartcop.com/pickles-killer.htm

.
A shillelagh.
.

If you watched Washington Journal this morning you would know that the jerks are already bringing up Chappaquiddick. They couldn't wait even a day to start their ugliness.

With nary a word with the far more recent slayings of the 4500 Americans and hundreds of thousands Iraqi men, woman and children at the hands of BushCo. Leave it to the librul media to not waste anytime going back 40 years over 1 death involving a Democrat when there are countless others who have died far more recently at the hands of a Republican....and with their cheerleading too boot.

.
I can smell.

too often lean on file footage filler to tell a story rather than current events and forethought to tell the truth.

had many admirable qualities, and since it's the day after his death, I'll gladly concede the healthcare-reform-as-his-legacy point. But the reality is that he only started addressing healthcare reform in earnest three or four years ago. Perhaps if he had begun the fight earlier in his career, we would have a good, or at least tolerable, healthcare system now. But despite his shortcomings, perceived and real, he was a good guy and the last active link to the New Deal and the Democrats' -- and the nation's -- glory days. RIP, Senator.

How long before FOX News has this banner headline?

"Did the Democrats "Vince Foster" Ted Kennedy in an attempt to give rationed government health care momentum? We report, you decide"

That sounds like fodder for the beck-ishness of the station.

Mark my words. It's coming. Nothing's too wacky for these loons.

I was going to say something about faux and what some of their mentally small people will be saying about Senator Kennedy but why..? I know the wreck is coming and if wait long enough, I'll be proven correct.
In the meantime, I'll remember him for his service to this country!

Would help the Democrats find their collective spine. It would also be delusional. This isn't about doing what's right and never has been. It's about those campaign contributions from health insurers and pharma.

I woke up at three his morning to go to the restroom and for some reason decided to go into the kitchen and turn on the tv. Of course the first thing I saw was the news about the Senator's death. Needless to say, I wasn't able to go back to bed. In these last six hours lots of thoughts have gone through my head about the Kennedy family. I know one thing for sure, that family is the polar opposite of the Bush family.

For a moment while comparing the two families what the world would be if Joe Jr. survived WW2 and George H Bush didn't

The Liberal Lion exits and we're left with liberal pussies.

Depressing.

I can't add anything to that

Call me naive, idealistic, whatever, but I'd just like to point out the great work Howard Dean has been doing in the fight for true healthcare reform. Yes, the Lion of The Senate has gone to his rest, but I'm encouraged by the work people like Howard Dean, Alan Grayson, Anthony Weiner and of course, Dennis Kucinich. We need to purge the Rahm Emmanuel faction from the Democratic Party even if it means Barack Obama being only a one term President

First get rid of Rahm, then the DLC, then the DINOS!!!!! With Rahmie recruiting people (?) like Spector, believe me we can do lots better than DINOS!!

I agree, but do you really have to yell?

Hello Kate, yes, I have sat by watching the Dims swipe defeat from the jaws of victory every single time a DLCer is involved. Yes, I have to yell because it seems to be that most folks just want to 'get along' so they can live!

This morning Norah O'Donnell said it is less likely now that Senator Kennedy has died that President Obama will get the health care reform that he wants. I don't know what she was basing that on.

Of right wing talking points. Senator Kennedy hasn't been involved at all in this current debate and I don't believe his death will help or hinder health care reform.

I hope not - Obama wants a plan that further lines the corporations' pockets and doesn't include a public option.

That's why he keeps floating these "no public option" trial balloons -to see what true liberals will agree to. Fortunately (so far) we've been able to shout him down.

I'm hoping he's sneaking up on the Republicans, and plans to ambush them in the reconciliation. Don't prejudge Obama - he's smart, and he may be playing a deep game.

in your capacity as a Senator.
Hailing as you did from Massachusetts, where the shots of freedom first rang out at Lexington and Concord in 1775, you served with great distinction in the Senate. And your name now can be added to the list that includes those early patriots, as you in your capacity as a civilian legislator, also fought (figuratively) many important legislative battles for noble reasons on issues that have helped many fellow Americans. I know I must've benefited from what you did in some ways and I thank you for it, as often a lot of great work goes unseen and unknown, but is still great nonetheless.

Why the hell is the MSM working Ted's health care work in 5 second groups after talking about JFK and his bipartisanship? It’s clear which one of those Ted’s was working the most on and it isn’t Fucking bipartisanship. And on bipartisanship no Ted made sure the public knew when the other side was Obstructing. If the MSM isn't using Ted’s death seemingly to blame the health care stall on a lack of bipartisanship (aka those damn dirty liberals not bending over far enough), There trying to claim some sort of end to an era. Which feels like there trying to excuse the actions of the GOP as "oh that's just the new politics no big deal."

Ted’s death could easily be used to get real health care reform, but how much you want to bet that instead of going for what Ted would real want they will Bullshit and say “this is a new chance at bipartisanship” and piss away such a glorious tribute.

Manufactured news.

Like going into a store and seeing aisles of nothing but potato chips and soft drinks.

for Spanish radio stations as part of a GOTV effort for the Democratic party in the late 1980's. Senator Ted Kennedy was the voice. He recorded it in sock feet propped up on a coffee table while he lounged on the hotel room couch. He was drinking a Michelob. His Spanish stunk. And we all laughed as he mispronounced name after name, the Senator included. I still have the script he autographed for me.

Viva Kennedy.

We lost another great one. You'll be missed Ted, by all of us. thank you for your untiring service to this country. May the Good Lord grant you the rest you deserve.

I like many mourn the passing of Ted Kennedy. He represented the fact that there are people who will stand for the little guy. FDR and the Kennedys could do no wrong in my parents' eyes. It is because of this that I try to always champion the cause of the people who actually do the living and dying in America, rather than the ones who spend all of their time feeding off of others. I know that Ted Kennedy is finally at peace. I do hope however that President Obama will really embrace the cause of healthcare that Ted Kennedy did not live long enough to complete. Ted Kennedy spoke about a new world last year. Please President Obama make it happen. All Americans need healthcare. Listen to the people, not the special interests and their hired voices. I offer my sympathy to the Kennedy family. Thank you for sharing Ted Kennedy and his brothers with all of us. We are better because they spent their lives here.

obvious fact that a critically polluted and cancer causing toxic environment like the USA is can make people sick and that no amount of medical intervention can protect us.

When is the Medical Establishment going to step in and discuss this?

How sad it is that Sen. Kennedy has passed on, however I am consoled that he has rejoined his loving brothers, sisters, and parents well and sound once more, never to be separated from them again or compromised by earthly pain or sorrow.

And how sad it is that the US media has already started to sully and compromise his lifetime of work by insinuating that if we were alive, he would seek compromise and bipartisan support for the public option. Bullshit. This is wishful thinking and projection.

With his passing, let us celebrate his life's work of other centered service to the public and carry forward what he thought was relevant and important. I fear however, that I shall never see his like again in service to our country.

For all of us that were inspired by him and his work---"---the hope still lives---and the dream shall never die."

Sadly, the talking heads are reading the right-wing talking points verbatim. It seems the story is that Kennedy would have wanted, more than anything else, for health care reform to be BI-PARTISAN.

Kennedy is no doubt spinning in his grave.

"Win one for the Teddy!"

And then flood congress with Teddy bears with our support for health insurance reform that Congress can in turn donate to area children's hospitals, shelters or homes.

We get our point across and it gives the douchy politicians an opportunity to score points.

I had the misfortune to listen to a few minutes of right wing radio this morning, and the hate filled right wing callers were actually snikering and laughing that Sen. Kennedy died!

And to think right wing Republicans claim to represent the 'culture of life'- one would think they could put aside their hate and venom for a moment to mourn the death of a human being..

Greg Sargent has a great post featuring clips of Kennedy on health care reform. Tragically they are 25 years old and older.

What is striking is that the terms of the debate remain the same,
but the quality of the journalism has changed...for the worse.
Check it out:

I don't think anyone is going to 'live' to see any kind of meaningful Health Care Reform. If anything it will be a pig with a shitload of lipstick on it and Big Insurance and Big Pharma will be laughing all the way to the bank.

Ted Kennedy, Senate Lion and Liberal Champion, Dies

The Massachusetts Democrat was seen by many as an American version of a Greek tragedy as his personal tragedies along with his professional triumphs and losses unfolded in the public eye.

Sen. Edward Kennedy, the longtime, beloved lawmaker whose personal tragedies along with his professional triumphs and losses unfolded in the public eye, has died of brain cancer. He was 77.

The Massachusetts Democrat was seen by many as an American version of a Greek tragedy. Born into political royalty, Kennedy's triumphs were often overshadowed by those of his brothers, John and Bobby Kennedy. But nonetheless, the younger Kennedy carved his own political legacy as one of the longest serving senators in U.S. history.

Click here for a timeline of Ted Kennedy's life.

The youngest of the nine-sibling Kennedy clan, Teddy had much of his path paved by famous older brothers and father. That created problems as well as opportunities for him.

As a member of a roving family, Kennedy moved around a lot in his youth and made friends easily. He attended Harvard in 1951, playing on the freshman football team before he was caught cheating by having a friend take his Spanish language exam.

Kennedy was expelled and entered the Army, where he served in Paris during the Korean War. and after almost two years was re-admitted to Harvard for demonstrating good behavior.

He went on to get a law degree from the University of Virginia Law School and served as an assistant D.A in Suffolk County, Mass. He married Virginia Joan Bennett, who was introduced to him by his sister Jean. They had three children, the youngest was Patrick, who also would enter public office.

When John Kennedy was elected to the presidency in 1960, it appeared the Kennedy clan had the makings of a political dynasty. At the time, Robert Kennedy was attorney general and Teddy, as he was affectionately known, was elected to the Senate in 1962.

But Kennedy soon found himself alone on the political stage after his brothers were killed by assassins in 1963 and 1968.

Shouldering the burden of a grieving family, Kennedy delivered Bobby's eulogy at New York's Saint Patrick's Cathedral in 1968, attributing to Robert a quote by Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw: "Some men see things as they are and say 'why.' I dream things that never were and say 'why not.'"

He added: "Those of us who loved him and who take him to his rest today pray that what he was to us, and what he wished for others will someday come to pass for all the world."

But Kennedy's own aspirations for the White House were dashed in 1969 when his car plunged off a bridge on Chappaquiddick on Martha's Vineyard, killing Robert Kennedy campaign aide Mary Jo Kopechne. Kennedy swam to safety and only alerted authorities to the accident hours later.

As Kopechne's body was pulled from the dark sedan, the senator told investigators he panicked. "That tragedy will live with me for the rest of my life...every day for the rest of my life," he said.

An investigation later absolved Kennedy of responsibility. He received two months suspended jail time for leaving the scene of an accident, but questions about his character would follow him and haunt his political ambitions for the nation's highest office.

Despite the Chappaquiddick incident, Kennedy decided to throw his hat into the 1980 presidential race, going up against incumbent Democrat Jimmy Carter. Kennedy lost his bid for the White House and returned to the Senate -- becoming the lion of the liberal left.

Like his first wife, Joan, Kennedy also struggled with alcohol, and through much of the 1980s was viewed as a playboy with a bottle. That image culminated with the arrest of his nephew, William Kennedy Smith, who was later acquitted on charges of raping a woman he met at a bar while out with his uncle. It also hurt his ability to fight the Supreme Court nomination of Clarence Thomas over allegations of harassment by former Thomas aide Anita Hill.

Kennedy credited his second wife Victoria Anne Reggie with turning him around and redirecting him back to his political career and liberal agenda.

Kennedy served as an ardent supporter for other Democrats seeking the presidency and endorsed Barack Obama early in his campaign -- comparing the Illinois senator with his late brother, John. At times, it seemed Kennedy and his abundant energy would last for years. But last May, he suffered a seizure at his Cape Cod home and was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor.

Kennedy stayed active for as long as he could after his diagnosis, offering a key address in support of Obama during the Democratic National Convention in Denver in August 2008. He also attended Obama's presidential inauguration, where he had to be taken away in a stretcher.

Though he was absent from the Senate for much of President Obama's first year, his name was attached to health care legislation, penned a widely read op-ed in support of health care reform and was a critical vote on several piece of legislation.

Kennedy was too ill to attend his sister Eunice Kennedy Shriver's funeral or to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom bestowed upon him by President Obama, both in in August 2009.

FOX News' Molly Line contributed to this report.

At least i know it was not personal.

I tried to post the Obituary Fox News has removed. It is not pretty, but i have no way of sharing it.

[Please. We put one surname in the filter expecting posts with that name included in them to be of an inflammatory nature. It most certainly was not personal-Sitemonitor]

Local right wing radio callers are saying Kennedy's death is somehow a good thing...I can only suspect FOX's coverage is equally as vile..
