Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus on Sunday suggested that President Barack Obama would destroy "our way of life in America," and "Mitt Romney has to win for liberty and freedom."
During an interview on Fox News, host John Roberts asked Priebus if Romney could win by attacking Obama on the slow economic recovery and poor job creation in the U.S.
"It's an issue that we have to win on," the RNC chairman explained. "The fact is that it's not a question of can Mitt Romney win, the question is -- the statement is Mitt Romney has to win for the sake of the very idea of America. Mitt Romney has to win for liberty and freedom."
"And we have to put an end to this Barack Obama presidency before it puts an end to our way of life in America."
Pointing to a recent CNN poll that showed battleground state voters preferred Obama's handling of the economy, 51 percent to 42 percent, Roberts wondered why Americans weren't willing to trust Romney's economic vision.
"The fact of the matter is that people understand the president is the head of this country," Priebus insisted. "The fish rots at the head."
