Go Home

This is pretty big news. The big progressive groups hadn't yet spoken on the question of escalation in Afghanistan - their silence was pronounced. MoveOn finally broke that silence today, appealing to the President to commit to a clear exit strategy. It's a pretty big step.

U.S. policy in Afghanistan has reached a pivotal moment. President Obama is poised to make a critical decision about the Afghanistan war in the next few weeks. And there’s a big debate happening right now about what to do.

Pro-war advocates both inside and outside the administration—including John McCain and Joe Lieberman—are calling for a big escalation. The general in charge of Afghanistan is expected to request tens of thousands more troops, and that may just be the beginning. They’re cranking up the pressure for an immediate surge.

But other powerful voices are urging caution: Vice President Biden and White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel have raised real concerns about the idea of sending more troops to Afghanistan without a clear strategy, as have Democrats in Congress. And a majority of Americans oppose increasing troop levels.

Can you write to the White House and tell them we need a clear exit strategy—not tens of thousands more US troops stuck in a quagmire? You can send the President a message by clicking below:

Some administration officials are arguing for a smaller, nimbler approach with a narrow focus on the threat from al-Qaeda. But cheerleaders for the war refuse to acknowledge that there could be any viable strategy other than more and more troops. So they’re trotting out the same tired old lines and questioning the motives of those who disagree with them.

They figure they can cut off any debate about our ultimate goals in Afghanistan and the region. But President Obama has consistently shown a willingness to stand up for his more thoughtful approach to foreign policy, and that’s what he needs to do here, too.

The hawks are making their position heard. Now, the majority of Americans—those of us who are for as quick and as responsible an end to the war as possible—need to make our voices heard, too.

With Democrats opposing escalation by more than two to one, MoveOn is just reflecting the opinions of their membership. They're a bit late to the debate, but better than ducking it entirely.

Rahmie, the ZIONISTWHORE is always where the $$$$ is, lots of $$$$$ in war, Rahmie has been heard to scold the PUKIELITES for paying for ads against Rahmie's stable of DINOs, Mike Ross the PUKIE comes to mind, so why isn't Rahmie leading a war hawk brigade schrieking about we got to save the Military/Industrialists/PETROLEUM mafia?????

Frankly I'd rather see an exit than an exit strategy, but one step at a time I 'spose.

We can't allow the Taliban to regain power though. So easy exit strategy, arm our allies up the wazoo and get out.

Yeah the Taliban are just a bunch of party animals. Leave them alone.

Having said that I think that we should let Afghanistan be Afghanistan except when we need to drone them.

Captain. That should be our mantra for the pullout campaign.

"Let Afghans be Afghans"

curtilingus's picture

You're funny JP. We already armed them up the wazoo in the 80's. You want us to leave them with a bunch more and hope they don't turn on us?

Get out and let the Taliban sort it out. Seriously. You want a straighten up the country humanitarian mission go to Somalia.

He only wants to tell others how to.

The Taliban don't have an air force or a navy. If we don't give them visas they can't reach us. After the first couple of months when it became obvious that Ben Ladin escape to Pakistan we should have left. If the Taliban regain power they will behave themselves since their leadership like the good life and they will make easy targets once they come out of hiding.

read up, you're behind the learning curve on that 'Taliban' thingie which is the front cover for the Amerikan Military/Industrial/Petroleum mafia.

Alice, we threw out that old, moldly piece of paper called the Constitution in the Junta of 2000. '................of the people, by the people, for the people' perished in that Junta. Camalot is gone indeed.

Why is it that it that the blood thirsty, uncaring Neo-Cons, hate our troops so much that they just want to continue sacrificing them for NO reason????

I thought the idea in Afghanistan was to get al Qaeda out. A couple months ago one of the army men said there were no more al Qaeda in Afghanistan. Time to leave.
Exit strategy? Gas up the trucks and start driving.. When you get to the airport load em in a plane and fly em home.
If al Qaeda tries to come back send a drone and pffffft BOOM!!! Problem solved. They can do the same to the Taliban guys. pffffft BOOM!!!

curtilingus's picture
:p

And when the drones are done, we'll send in big dog to clean up.

Best comment about the "Big Dog."
"Put that mother fucker on Mars with a Camera."

curtilingus's picture

LOL. He has a point. Unfortunately I think big dog's first mission will be military. Or maybe herding protesters here in the states.

stewartm0205's picture

Tell them we will leave them alone if they don't offer Al Queda refuge. And if they don't kill women for wanting to learn.

Fuck the exit strategy. Just get them out. Start today. In another 6 months Afghanistan will become Obama's Folly.

chickenhawks are sooooooo stupid.

More combat vets in either MoveOn or ACORN then the entire Republican Congressional Caucus.

More vets in ACORN and MoveOn than in the Young Republicans or on Faux Noise.

Not a lot of courage for their supposed convictions, eh?

Its about time Moveon came around. This whole Afghanistan fiasco cannot be accomplished by any stretch of the imagination save for a sudden turn of heart by every Afghan in the country. There simply are not enough troops available (I've seen estimates of 500,000 plus are needed), and the momentum has long turned in the Taliban's favor. Reconstruction and other economic projects are and have been a complete failure. Narcotics and gun running are the norm for most Afghans to make a living now. Karzai and his government could and still cannot even extend their infuence outside of Kabul without American help.

From top to bottom Afghanistan has been a complete failure. It seems that now all the White House can do is hold some of the major cities, conduct a few few random patrols and hope that a political settlement presents itself.

Terrible's picture

that even 500,000 could get Unocals pipeline built and keep it guarded.

Ya know that whole definition of insanity thing? Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results?

NO ONE has ever won/triumphed/made a shit bit of difference in Afganistan. NO ONE. Not the British, not the Russians, not us.

Get out already.

Wasn't mcdepends on the side that claimed that time-lines was treason in Iraq, as the terrorists would simply wait it out?

I hate to start having a defeatist attitude but i'm starting to see that no matter what we say, we don't have a voice. They are going to do what they want to do anyway. We won't be leaving their in our life time. In another 50 years we will still be there. They will keep making excuses and reasons as to why we can't ever leave. Once we get our food in the door, well you know.

food=foot, that must have been a slip

We learned in Viet Nam and Iraq that we can't trust the Generals who say all we gotta do is bring in more troops and/or drop more bombs and we will win. Its been 8 looooonnnnnng years. Time to go and fix THIS country.

I spent 33 years and four months in active military service and during that period I spent most of my time as a high class muscle man for Big Business, for Wall Street and the bankers. In short, I was a racketeer, a gangster for capitalism. This is General Smedley Butler who outed Prescott's coup de etate in 1932.

They must have has a long meeting, decided the water feels safer now with these changes in attitude being signaled by the White House, and said "Yeah - we're against this war!" Very brave.
