Just imagine: What if McCain had won the election and Obama had shafted him during the stimulus debate?
By John Amato Monday Feb 09, 2009 9:00am
...The media elites would be calling him an obstructionist, a sore loser, a man and party with no new ideas and someone who will not listen to the will of the people after they had spoken on Nov. 4th.
Instead CBS framed their story like this: "Change? McCain Says Dems Are Just Like GOP":
Schieffer began his interview with a question likely on many people's minds, asking the Arizona senator how he has gotten right back to work after a devastating presidential election loss.
"I think the best cure for defeat, as hard as it may be, is to get back in the arena,” McCain said. "I love what we do in the Senate. I'm honored to serve. I am honored to represent the people of Arizona and have some voice in major crises we face both at home and abroad. So best cure, I am happy to be back and I am happy to be back on this program.”
Um, are McCain's feelings after losing an election the big question on people's minds? I think the stimulus package is the focus of the country right now, don't you? The fact that McCain was almost holding his breath until he turned blue Friday night and has led a campaign against Obama's stimulus plan all week might be more interesting to the people. Schieffer could have asked something like, "As I'm sure you know you lost the election. Senator McCain, you look like you're acting almost childish in your opposition. Don't you think it hurts your Mavericky reputation to carry on like you have? And what does it say about the Republican party as well?"
Instead, he tries to reason with McCain, when that's not the political strategy the GOP is taking. McCain, like most of the Republican Party, is being led by Rush Limbaugh now. So sad indeed. David wrote a good post about McCain on Sunday.

is the one on the media's mind. "Now that you have lost is the wait time shorter at your tire swing?
John McCain doesn't know "diddly" about public finance or economics...
John McCain is up for re-election in 2010.
I wonder how the 50 State Strategy was in effecting Arizona?
.
If McCrazy won and the (R)ushpublican were in charge, the MSMBS wouldn't allow a single Dem on air, let the loser of the election.
.
McCain's campaign.
McCain's brain.
McCain's integrity.
McCain's honesty.
We can only conclude that McCain enjoyed being shafted so much by the Bush Administration that he'll do anything for
Rush bin Limbaughthe GOP. Anything. Lick your shoes, Mr. Limbaugh? Kiss your arse, Mr. Limbaugh? What if Keith Olbermann had made an ignorant statement like Limpbrain's ...hoping Bush would fail?
Keith would have been crucified in the press and then fired by MSNBC - that's what!!
Hey Senator, why aren't you capturing Bin Laden?
You've already said you're the only one who know how, and you've already admitted that economics isn't exactly a strong point of yours.
So why don't you go and do something you claim you are good at, and stop doing things you claim you are bad at? In fact, why don't you just go?
Too often the American press and blogs have too short a memory and fail to call these bastards out for their lies and hypocrisy. Thanks for reminding us of this fools words and claims of a few months ago. And Where the hell is Bin Laden and why aren't more people talking about him. Is it because our role model and leader told us he's not that interested in him. Well I am. And so are a lot of family members and Americans. We want to know the truth about Bin Laden and all that shit. Thanks.
...would be for Johnny to round up all of his friends (Georgie, Dickie, Sarah, etc. ) and take them to spend a year or two at a lovely
Arizona sanitarium (i.e., a place where one recovers one's sanity)!!!
is that Rush Limbaugh is smarter than they are. Hahahahahaha! Wait, what if it's true?
or the other?
both are dumber than a box of rocks as far as I can tell.
A box of rocks has potential.
than you average box of rocks.
if McCain had won, there would be no 'stimulus debate'. most likely he'd be passing a $2T tax cut exclusively for people making $200,000,000 per year or more, and trying to get the SCOTUS to ban the word 'stimulate' outright.
Madam to the Wall Street brokers speaks out:
http://video.aol.com/video-detail/wall-st-mad...
After all, these guys were all his big contributors! (I know, I know....and Obama's).
What ever happened to the D.C. Madam's client list and court case? Her convenient death made holding all these people accountable impossible? Come on. I think we need better investigative journalists in this country. Citizen journalists, Investigative journalists, a brave press, etc.
I shudder at the near miss we had with him as Prez.
He would be picking the next Supreme Court justice.
And that is the only reason I voted Democrat.
Many Dems are like GOPers in many respects.
...are at the foundation of the Republican Party. And Grandpa...you lost! That means we don't care what the fuck you think!
not only did McSame lose, he can shove his head back up his arse for all the BS he speaks! When will he realize that nobody gives a crap what he thinks? What a frickin' loser!

the truth is !the republicans didnt intend to win the presidential election ! come on folks wise up, had they wished to win with thier candidate it wouldnt have been by running john mccain and sarah palin or with a clown like joe the plumber, and they wasted very little money pushing thier throw away candidate for the highest office in the land! once again the repigs stuck one in you and you loved it!
... even if we lined the lot of 'em up against the wall and started over, we'd just end up with the same crap in the end if the system itself isn't reworked.
Losers always have ready made limp dick excuses. Did you see that lot candidates they offered during the campaign? A fucking dog show. The Republicans ain't got shit! Period.
... as long as the Republicans can play the 'oh, we want concessions' card, get the Democrats to water down the bill, and then stand there and flip us the bird as they all vote NO, they're serving up a shit omelet and handing us a fork and napkin.
As long as the Democrats play by Republican rules, and allow these fuckers to define us, we'll be losers...mother fuck all of them.
The winners should dictate what the losers get, not the other way around.
The American League wins the All-Star Game, it gets the home field advantage in the World Series. The National League doesn't get concessions and goodies for losing.
That is the ONLY explanation for Sarah Palin: they needed a plausible candidate (McCumstain) and a plausible reason for his failure to win (Palin) to sustain the illusion that they were serious...but of course it was a sham...
Their plan all along was to leave the whole mess on the Dims' plate, clusterfuck the legislative process to ensure that Obama & the Dims failure, and position themselves (what other choice would there be?) for 2010 aaqnd 2012.
You two are repeating something that I had been saying for months before the election.
... is because the Dems can't frame an issue to save their lives, political or otherwise.
We have a winner!!!
So?
(for example) explain the wholesale acceptance of these figures by the MSM as legitimate and viable representatives of the republican party? are all the media commentators in on this too?
sadly, there need be no conspiracy. after hundreds of years of relentless brain-washing (intentional or not) we find ourselves in an era of seriously physically-, mentally- and spiritually-degraded humans. these folks, whether joe-six-pack or john mccain, really do "believe" the lies they tell, and want us to believe them too.
sure, the goopers had no good alternatives or candidates to put forward, but that was simply relative to the (recent shitty bush) times. reagan was "objectively" never anything but a joke, but he probably would have defeated jeebus himself in '80.
i think we both agree tho, that the real power is not in these (or any other) figure-heads...
It's like a cult. The GOP browbeat the media into accepting them as the voices of reason and fairness. They continue to depend on them for their worldview, rather than do the research and have to take responsibility for their own part in this clown car act.
...the 5 or 6 corporations that OWN every part of the media in this country also OWN the the Republicans and most of the Democrats as well. The media conglomerates provide the funding for the political campaigns and decide who'll get presented in what light. There is very little journalistic "research" or valid "reporting" that actually happens - unless it benefits:
the favored politicians and the media guys.
But I lay around all night worrying how John McCain is doing.
Is he cheerful? Is his wife still rich? Does he remember where all his homes are? Has he made up with Vicki?
I worry, I know. But damn it, we're talking about something important. We're talking about John McCain!
Thanks for that touching update, Bob. Good to see you've hung onto your priorities.
good one.
i thought obama showed great class in how he handled his HUGE win over mr. civilian bomber. which made mccain's complete lack of class all the more apparent in his GOP-hypocritical opportunism
My friends, the fundamentals of my logic are strong.

If the tables were turned and Obama had gone on these shows voicing opposition to McCain he would have been eviscerated. There would have been calls from the wingnuts for his censure and serious questioning of his patriotism.
Another thing to ask to McCain and others would be, "You say that government can't help in these situations and it makes issues worse. Aren't tax cuts government intervention, as well? And if the Bush tax cuts are partially to blame, 1.4 trillion dollars worth, why do Republicans like yourself continue to view tax cuts as a "fix-it-all"?
... the GOP version of drowning a baby in the bathtub. The cuts go to the rich, who profit. Government, which is dependent on the tax base to function, receives less and must (in theory) dial back excesses. These are most often programs that exist to uplift - education, social services, healthcare, and so on.
This isn't a diet, where eating less results in losing weight (not to mention which, you have to pair diet with exercise). We're talking the nonsensical math of paying less to the entity that we're also counting on to maintain and execute a nation and its laws. (Not that it's been doing terribly well these past eight years.)
Always thought he looked like ... New

John McCain is now, has been for 20 years or longer nothing more than a bitter, hate filled, loser. He resembles his party and that is why he and not Rush should be the standard bearer of the Grumpy Old Party! This old fossil has no worth or new ideas. And guess what? Yes, once again he totally mirrors his party!
Obstructionist, uncaring, Assholes, like McShame, are traitors to the people in our country that need help.
Republicans are practicing forms of demagoguery and guerrilla obstructionism that are intended to destabilize our economy for purposes of political exploitation. Republicans AREN’T making a sincere effort to stop the bleeding their incompetent leadership and failed policies created. Instead, they are using conflicting economic theories as a smokescreen to conceal their real agenda, which is to undermine President Obama and cause him to fail. Republicans are professing their disgraceful political whoring had nothing to do with the banking, real estate, stock market and employment failures that resulted. Republicans are shamelessly trying to block the success of Democratic governance, which is a concerted effort to further damage America, rather than undo or fix its problems. Republicans are offering up subjective controversial arguments they know no one can agree on in order to disrupt and deny constructive change. They want political gridlock for strictly PARTISAN POLITICAL purposes. That’s how they gained power and that’s how they’re trying to retain it. I don’t see them as being the loyal opposition. I see them as an ENEMY WITHIN whose political ambitions have distorted their moral and ethical standards to the point that treachery and betrayal are their preferred weapons of choice. It’s one thing for Republicans to stand up for their conservative beliefs; it’s another thing entirely to deliberately sabotage our government because a successful America would not be vulnerable to the fears and hatreds that created and sustained Republican extremism.
This whole Republican "resistance" to the stimulus bill is just a distraction.
People are starting to recognize that the whole political process is a dog and pony show designed to distract them from the real issues. Last week Crooks and Liars posted an article that outlined that because of the systemic corruption in this country, any proposed solutions -- ie "economic stimulus" -- would fail to deliver any results. ('The Parasites Are Eating The Host' last Thursday)
Yet here they are again making it seem like there is a real debate going on, and that it is only the Republicans who are holding up real substantive steps that could turn this country around. While I understand this is a "partisan" site, if the desire is to go beyond partisan positioning and actually address issues, Crooks and Liars has to step away from the "those dirty Republican" postures which, again, only distract people from the real issue which is that the politicians of both parties with very few exceptions are working against the interests of the American people.
Until the entire banking system is revamped -- the same banking system that is literally stealing our futures out from under our noses -- Obama can spend as much as he wants of non-existant money and nothing, nothing is going to change. In fact both parties are owned by the same corporate masters and ultimately are implementing the same policies to feudalize America -- meaning a very few super rich and everyone else part of a devastated, impoverished underclass along the lines of Mexico -- while performing their kabuki theatre to give people false issues to focus on and false hope that things will change.
Oh, and by the way, Obama raised hundreds of millions from Wall Street, so he's not likely to rock their boat too hard, in fact this week his Treasury Chief Geithner will ask Congress for even more money for the "too big to fail" banks even as Obama chides the banks for "grotesque" bonuses paid to their execs. And thanks to loopholes in Obama's signing statement, execs at Goldman Sacs and JP Morgan and other mega banks will NOT have to implement those executive pay caps. Bloomberg did a big story on this. If that doesn't tell you a great deal about what is going on today, nothing will.
People have to start looking beyond the surface issues, and they will soon enough as more and more people are impoverished and the country continues to go into a death spiral. Still, the sooner people start looking behind the curtain to see the Wizards of Oz pulling the levers of the magic show, the sooner people can take steps to turn things around.
because they have no ideas, they know they are the cause of the economy failing, and they think that it is so bad, any plan, no matter what will fail and they can take credit for being against it.
loves him his Republican buddies. He was hostile to Obama during the election, until it became apparent that he was going to win, then he gave lip service to admiring the new president. But now, given the chance to trash Obama and the Dems once more, Bob is right back at it.
And does anyone else think he resembles one of the California raisins?
exactly , the right dirty hand washes the left dirty hand! it certainly is a dog and pony show , like i said good cop bad cop!
... washing one's hands implies that a state of cleanliness is achieved.
Do you know what I think really fuels these kinds of statements? Our politicians seem to think they're *leaders*, rather than representatives. They refer to themselves as "leaders" all the time.
McCain isn't giving any thought whatsoever to the will of the populace-- he's just serving his own personal ideology (and that of his major donors, of course). And why not? I mean, if you think you're a "leader" rather than a representative, why would you bother listening to the peons? You dictate to them, you don't listen to them.
Excellent point Cat. Our elected officials seem to think that Public Service is a career. They couldn't be more wrong. Public Service is a commitment.
If McCain had won the election he would be shafting the country and making preparations to attack Iran. He also called the stimulus package 'generational theft'. Now isn't that just the pot calling the kettle black. When Bush passed the TARP Plan it was just hunky dory. Now when Obama wants to do basically the same thing, but this time for the country and not the Fat-Cats...it's 'generational theft'. According to some poll, while President Obamas' popularity continues to soar, three out of four people disapprove of the Stimulus Plan. Sounds like Republican propaganda to me. When are these ass hat Republicans going to get out of the way and let Obama do his job? The President his trying his damnedest to make this as bipartisan as possible but they continue to make this an 'us against them' issue, and they wonder why people no longer trust them. The Republicans want Obama to fail and the country also, just so they can say, "ha...we told you so". They want the country to stay divided because that's all they know thanks to Dick & George.
See john mccain as R.P. McMurphy in one flew over the coo coos nest," I'am happy to be back nurse Rached". Why do people in Az keep sending this prick to washington? Why does he keep pissing on our country? Why is he not in jail? Az, care to comment? Anyone there?
CEO,citizens,eyes,open.
I plan on very FIRMLY drawing the line on some other space than Grampy's come 2010...
Not that it will help. AZ is so screwed up in the head. I can't wait to move to another state.
Just for context, I live in Mesa, who regularly sends an anti-public school Nazi to our state legislature (Russel Pearce, look him up). Yes, most Zonies are THAT fucked up in the head, if you;ll pardon my French...
John McCain is the personification of the re-Thuglic party's ideas. He is old and he has failed.
*
If this nasty old jerk were Prez he would be bombing innocent Iranians the same way he murdered those dangerous, terrorist rice farmers in Vietnam. "I'll fight, fight, fight, and I will make them famous and you will know their names." Fuck you, loser.
go fuck yourself, repugs!
Senator John McCain says he, along with other Republicans, were expecting a much smaller stimulus package. He says that it will be a problem for future generations, yet it could help millions of people find jobs right now. He even concedes that this stimulus question is one more about timing than anything else, but he still will not back the stimulus bill.
Maybe it's just me, but if this country ends up passing the proposed stimulus package now, and millions of people find jobs, won't that help later on when spending becomes important again? A smaller package does not seem helpful at all--it seems more like an attempt at the same idea. An attempt that, with its lesser spending, could ultimately fail. Then, no one will be spending at all. Does anyone else see this conflict?
CBS -- acronym for Complete BullShit
Obama should come out and call him on this because if the shoe was on the other foot that's exactly what McCain and the RNC would be doing.
..when I though McCain, in defeat, was coming to an realization of himself. His concession speech made me think that he did, after all, have some shred of dignity.
Instead, I see that he is just another soulless Republican bastard.
That'll learn me.
